¹ And Abraham journeyed from there to the land of the Negev, and he settled between Kadesh and Shur. And he dwelled as an alien in Gerar. ² And Abraham said about Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. ³ And God came to Abimelech in a dream at night. And he said to him, "Look, you are a dead man on account of the woman you have taken. For she is _⌊a married woman_⌋."* ⁴ Now Abimelech had not approached her, so he said, "my Lord, will you even kill a righteous people?" ⁵ Did not he himself say to me, 'She is my sister'? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' With integrity of my heart and with cleanness of my hands I did this." ⁶ Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes,* I know that in the integrity of your heart you did this, and I also _⌊kept you from sinning_⌋* against me. Therefore, I did not allow you to touch her. ⁷ So now, return the wife of the man, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you and you will live. And _⌊if you do not return her_⌋,* know that you will certainly die, and all that are yours." ⁸ So Abimelech rose early in the morning. And he called all his servants and _⌊told them all these things_⌋,* and the men were very afraid. ⁹ And Abimelech called for Abraham and said to him, "What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you that you brought upon me and upon my kingdom a great sin? You have done things to me that should not be done." ¹⁰ And Abimelech said to Abraham, "_⌊What were you thinking_⌋* that you did this thing?" ¹¹ And Abraham said, "Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place; they will kill me on account of the matter of my wife. ¹² _⌊Besides_⌋,* she is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother. And she became my wife. ¹³ And it happened that as God caused me to wander from the house of my father I said to her, 'This is your loyal kindness that you must do for me at every place where we come: say concerning me, "He is my brother." '" ¹⁴ And Abimelech took sheep and cattle and male slaves and female slaves, and he gave them to Abraham. And he returned Sarah his wife to him. ¹⁵ And Abimelech said, "Here is my land before you; settle _⌊where it pleases you_⌋."* ¹⁶ And to Sarah he said, "Look, I have given a thousand pieces of silver to your brother. It shall be _⌊an exoneration_⌋.* _⌊You are vindicated before all who are with you_⌋."* ¹⁷ And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his female servants so that they could bear children again. ¹⁸ For Yahweh had completely closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of the matter of Sarah, the wife of Abraham.

¹⁹ And the territory of the Canaanites was from Sidon _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Gerar as far as Gaza, and _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

¹ Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that was with him. And Lot went with him to the Negev.

⁷ Then* they turned back and came to En-Mishpat (that is, Kadesh). And they defeated the whole territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who were living in Hazazon-Tamar.

¹ Now* Sarai, the wife of Abram, had borne him no children. And she had a female Egyptian servant, and her name was Hagar.

⁷ And the angel of Yahweh found her at a spring of water in the wilderness, at the spring by the road of Shur.

¹⁴ Therefore the well was called Beer-Lahai-Roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

¹ And Yahweh appeared to him* by the oaks of Mamre. And he was sitting in the doorway of the tent at the heat of the day.

⁶² Now Isaac was coming from the direction of Beer-Lahai-Roi. And he was living in the land of the Negev.

¹ And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine which was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

⁶ So Isaac settled in Gerar.

²⁰ Then the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, "The water is ours." And he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

²⁶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his friend and Phicol his army commander.

²⁶ And they came* to Moses and Aaron and to the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Paran at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the community, and they showed them the fruit of the land.

¹⁶ Then we cried to Yahweh, and he heard our voice; he sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt. And look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.

¹⁹ "Then we set out from Horeb, and we went through the whole of that great and terrible desert that you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites* as Yahweh our God had commanded us, and so we came up to Kadesh Barnea.

⁵¹ because of the fact that you broke faith with me in the midst of Israel at the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the desert of Zin, because _⌊you did not treat me as holy_⌋* in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

⁷ Then Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as one goes to Shur which is _⌊east of_⌋* Egypt.

¹³ Then Asa and the army* with him pursued them to Gerar. And many from the Cushites fell, for they had no deliverance, for they were shattered before Yahweh and before his army. And they carried away much war booty. ¹⁴ And they struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of Yahweh was upon them. And they plundered all the cities, for there was much plunder in them.

⁸ The voice of Yahweh shakes the wilderness. Yahweh shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

¹¹ And it happened that as he drew near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, "Look now, I know that you are a woman beautiful of appearance, ¹² and it shall happen that, if the Egyptians see you, then they will say, 'This is his wife,' then they will kill me but let you live. ¹³ Please say you are my sister so that it will go well for me on your account. _⌊Then I will live_⌋* on account of you."

¹⁵ And the officials of Pharaoh saw her, and they praised her beauty to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to the house of Pharaoh.

¹² _⌊Besides_⌋,* she is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother. And she became my wife.

⁷ When the men of the place asked concerning his wife, he said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "my wife," thinking* "the men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for _⌊she was beautiful_⌋."*

¹⁶ And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you have become much too powerful for us."

² And Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him. And he said to King Jehoshaphat, "Should you be a help to the wicked and love those who hate Yahweh? On account of this, wrath has come against you from Yahweh.

³⁷ Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because of your joining with Ahaziah, Yahweh will break down your works." And the ships were destroyed and were not able to go to Tarshish.

³¹ And thus in the matter of the envoys of the commanders of Babylon who had been sent to him to seek the sign that had happened in the land, God forsook him, to test him and to know all that was in his heart.

¹⁶ For seven times the righteous will fall, but he will rise, but the wicked will be overthrown by calamity.

²⁰ Surely there is no one righteous on the earth who continually does good and never sins.

¹¹ But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was condemned. ¹² For before certain people came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles, but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he* was afraid of those who were of the circumcision,

²⁵ Therefore, putting aside the lie, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor,* because we are members of one another.

⁹ Do not lie to one another, because you* have taken off the old man together with his deeds,

⁷ So now, return the wife of the man, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you and you will live. And _⌊if you do not return her_⌋,* know that you will certainly die, and all that are yours."

¹² And he dreamed, and behold, a stairway was set on the earth, and its top touched the heavens. And behold, angels of God were going up and going down on it.

²⁴ And God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "_⌊Take care_⌋* that you not speak with Jacob, whether good or evil."

⁵ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers. And _⌊they hated him even more_⌋.*

⁹ Then he dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brothers. And he said, "Behold, I dreamed a dream again, and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."

⁸ And they said to him, "We each dreamed a dream, but there is no one to interpret it." And Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me."

¹ And it happened that after _⌊two full years_⌋* Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he was standing by the Nile. ² And behold, seven cows, _⌊well built and fat_⌋,* were coming up from the Nile, and they grazed among the reeds. ³ And behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, _⌊ugly and gaunt_⌋,* and they stood beside those* cows on the bank of the Nile. ⁴ And the _⌊ugly and gaunt_⌋* cows ate the seven _⌊well built and fat_⌋* cows. Then Pharaoh awoke. ⁵ And he fell asleep and dreamed a second time, and behold, seven ears of grain, plump and good, were coming out of one stalk. ⁶ And behold, seven thin ears of grain, scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them. ⁷ And the thin ears of grain swallowed up the seven plump and full ears of grain. Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream. ⁸ And it happened that in the morning his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called all of the magicians* of Egypt, and all its wise men, and Pharaoh told his dream to them. But _⌊they had no interpretation_⌋* for Pharaoh. ⁹ Then the chief of the cupbearers spoke with Pharaoh, saying, "I remember my sins today. ¹⁰ Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and he put me and the chief baker in the custody of the house of the chief of the guard. ¹¹ And we dreamed a dream one night, I and he, _⌊each with a dream that had a meaning_⌋.* ¹² And there with us was a young man, a Hebrew servant of the chief of the guard, and we told him the dream, and he interpreted our dreams for us, each according to his dream he interpreted. ¹³ And it happened just as he interpreted to us, so it was. He* restored me to my office, and him* he* hanged." ¹⁴ Then Pharaoh sent and called for Joseph, and they brought him quickly from the prison. And he shaved and changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. ¹⁵ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I dreamed a dream, but there is none to interpret it. Now, I have heard concerning you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." ¹⁶ Then Joseph answered Pharaoh saying, "_⌊It is not in my power_⌋;* God will answer concerning the well-being of Pharaoh." ¹⁷ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Now in my dream, behold, I was standing on the bank of the Nile, ¹⁸ and behold, seven cows, _⌊well built and fat_⌋,* were coming up from the Nile, and they grazed among the reeds. ¹⁹ And behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, very _⌊ugly and gaunt_⌋*—never have I seen any as them in all the land of Egypt for ugliness. ²⁰ And the thin and ugly cows ate the former seven healthy cows. ²¹ But when they went into their bellies* it could not be known that they went into their bellies,* for their appearance was as ugly as at the beginning. Then I awoke. ²² Then I saw in my dream and behold, seven ears of grain were coming out of one stalk, full and good. ²³ And behold, seven withered ears of grain, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them. ²⁴ And the thin ears of grain swallowed up the seven good ears of grain. And I told the magicians,* but there was none to explain it to me." ²⁵ Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. ²⁶ The seven good cows, they are seven years, and the seven good ears of grain, they are seven years. The dreams are one. ²⁷ And the seven thin and ugly cows coming up after them, they are seven years, and the seven empty ears of grain, scorched by the east wind, they are also seven years of famine. ²⁸ This is the word that I have spoken to Pharaoh; God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. ²⁹ Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the whole land of Egypt. ³⁰ Then seven years of famine will arise after them, and all the abundance in the land of Egypt will be forgotten. The famine will consume the land. ³¹ Abundance in the land will not be known because of the famine _⌊that follows_⌋,* for it will be very heavy. ³² Now concerning the repetition of the dream twice to Pharaoh, it is because the matter is established by God, and God will do it quickly. ³³ Now then, let Pharaoh select a man who is discerning and wise, and let him set him over the land of Egypt. ³⁴ Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint supervisors over the land, and let him take one-fifth from the land of Egypt in the seven years of abundance. ³⁵ Then let them gather all the food of these coming good years and let them pile up grain under the hand of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. ³⁶ Then the food shall be as a deposit for the land for the seven years of the famine that will be in the land of Egypt, that the land will not perish on account of the famine."

¹² "And a word came stealing to me, and my ear received the whisper from it. ¹³ Amid troubling thoughts from night visions, at the falling of deep sleep on men,

¹⁵ "In a dream, a vision of the night, when a deep sleep falls on men slumbering on their bed,

¹⁴ he allowed no one to oppress them, and he rebuked kings on account of them,

¹⁴ And when I say to the wicked, 'Certainly you will die,' but* he returns from his sin and he does justice and righteousness— ¹⁵ for example, the wicked returns a pledge for a loan, he restores _⌊stolen property_⌋,* he goes in the statutes of life so as not to do injustice—certainly he will live; he will not die.

⁴ And Jonah began to go into the city a journey of one day, and he cried out and said, "Forty more days and Nineveh will be demolished!"*

²⁰ But as* he was considering these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

¹² And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route. ¹³ Now after they had gone away, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying, "Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to seek the child to destroy him."

¹⁹ And while* he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message* to him, saying, "_⌊Have nothing to do with that righteous man_⌋,* for I have suffered much as a result of a dream today because of him.")

²³ And Abraham drew near to Yahweh and said, "Will you also sweep away the righteous with the wicked? ²⁴ If perhaps there are fifty righteous in the midst of the city, will you also sweep them away and not forgive the place on account of the fifty righteous in her midst? ²⁵ Far be it from you to do such a thing as this, to kill the righteous with the wicked, that* the righteous would be as the wicked! Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?"

²⁴ Yahweh rained down from heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh.

⁶ Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes,* I know that in the integrity of your heart you did this, and I also _⌊kept you from sinning_⌋* against me. Therefore, I did not allow you to touch her.

¹⁷ And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his female servants so that they could bear children again. ¹⁸ For Yahweh had completely closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of the matter of Sarah, the wife of Abraham.

¹¹ _⌊How much more_⌋* when wicked men kill a righteous man in his house, on his bed! So then, shall I not seek his lifeblood from your hand, so that I may destroy you from the earth?"

¹⁷ Then David said to God, "Was it not I who gave a command to count the people? Now I am he who has sinned, and I have certainly done wickedness, but these sheep, what have they done? O Yahweh, my God, please let your hand be against me and against the house of my father, but against your people, let there be no plague."

²² "Yahweh, God of gods! Yahweh, God of gods knows. And let Israel itself know, if it was in rebellion or treachery against Yahweh, do not spare us this day

⁴ As for you, if you walk before me as David your father walked, with _⌊integrity of heart_⌋* and with uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep my ordinances and my judgments,

³ "O Yahweh, please remember how I went about before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and remember the good that I have done in your eyes." Then Hezekiah _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.*

¹⁷ And I know, my God, that you yourself test the heart and are pleased with uprightness. I, in the uprightness of my heart, have willingly offered all these things, and now I have seen your people who are found here willingly offer to you.

⁹ 'I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no guilt in me.

⁸ Yahweh judges the nations. O Yahweh, vindicate me according to my innocence* and according to my integrity within me.

⁴ He who is innocent of hands and pure of heart, who does not lift up his soul to falseness, and does not swear deceitfully.

²¹ Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for you.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence, and I will walk about your altar, O Yahweh,

¹³ Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure, and washed my hands in innocence.

⁷² And he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and led them by the skillfulness of his hands.

³ The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.

⁷ He who walks in his integrity is righteous; happy are his children who follow him.

²² My God sent his angel and he shut the mouth of the lions and they did not* hurt me, _⌊because_⌋* before him _⌊I was found_⌋* blameless, and also before you, O king, I have not done any wrong."

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we became to you who believe,

¹³ although I* was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, but I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief,

³ but from the tree that is in the midst of the garden, God said, 'You shall not eat from it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die'."

¹⁸ For Yahweh had completely closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of the matter of Sarah, the wife of Abraham.

¹¹ Then Abimelech instructed all the people, saying, "The one who touches this man or his wife shall certainly die."

⁷ and your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but God has not allowed him to harm me.

⁵ Then they set out on their journey, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, so that they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

⁹ He has no greater authority in this house than me, and he has not withheld anything from me except you, since you are his wife. Now how could I do this great wickedness and sin against God?"

²⁴ because I will evict nations before you, and I will enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up to appear before Yahweh your God three times in the year.

² "When a person* _⌊displays infidelity_⌋* against Yahweh and he deceives his fellow citizen regarding* something entrusted or _⌊a pledge_⌋* or stealing or he exploits his fellow citizen,

²⁶ So then, my lord, _⌊as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives_⌋,* since Yahweh restrained you from bloodguilt _⌊by taking matters into your own hand_⌋,* so then, may your enemies be like Nabal, even _⌊those who seek to do my lord harm_⌋.*

³⁴ But _⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋,* the God of Israel who has prevented me from harming you, if you had not hurried and come to meet me, surely there would not have been _⌊one male_⌋* left alive for Nabal by the light of morning!"

⁴ Against you, only you, I have sinned and have done this evil* in your eyes, so that you are correct when you speak, you are blameless when you judge.

¹² So I let them* go in the stubbornness of their heart; they walked in their counsels.

¹¹ Because Yahweh God is a sun and a shield; Yahweh gives grace and honor. He does not withhold good from those who walk blamelessly.

¹ Streams of water are the heart* of a king in the hand of Yahweh; _⌊wherever_⌋* he will desire, he will turn.

⁶ Therefore, Look! I am going to hedge her path* _⌊with thorns_⌋,* and I will build a stone wall, a stone wall against her, and she will not find her paths. ⁷ Then she will pursue _⌊her lovers_⌋,* but she will not overtake them; she will seek them and not find them; and she will say, "I will go and return to my first husband because it was better for me then than now."

¹ Now concerning the things about which you wrote: "It is good for a man not to touch* a woman."

¹⁷ Therefore "come out from their midst and be separate," says the Lord, "and do not touch what is unclean,* and I will welcome you,*

⁷ For the mystery of lawlessness is at work already; only the one who now restrains* will do so until he is out of the way,*

¹¹ And because of this, God sends them _⌊a powerful delusion_⌋* so that they will believe the lie,

¹⁷ but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day _⌊that you eat_⌋* from it _⌊you shall surely die_⌋."*

¹⁷ Then* Yahweh afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues on account of the matter of Sarai the wife of Abram.

¹⁶ And he will speak for you to the people, _⌊and then_⌋* he will be to you as a mouth, and you will be to him as a god.

¹ And Yahweh said to Moses, "See, I have made you as a god to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother will be your prophet.

¹ And Yahweh said to Moses and to Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, ² "This month will be the beginning of months; it will be for you the first of the months of the year. ³ Speak to all the community of Israel, saying, 'On the tenth of this month, they will each take for themselves _⌊a lamb for the family_⌋,* a lamb for the household.

¹⁷ And the father-in-law of Moses said to him, "The thing that you are doing is not good.

⁴ _⌊and when_⌋* he sins and is guilty, then* he shall bring back _⌊the things he had stolen_⌋* or _⌊what he had extorted_⌋* or _⌊something with which he had been entrusted_⌋* or the lost property that he had found,

⁷ and the priest shall make atonement for him _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, and he shall be forgiven _⌊anything_⌋* from all that he might do _⌊by which he might incur guilt_⌋."*

³² The land opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their houses and every person _⌊that belonged to Korah_⌋* and all the property. ³³ They went down alive to Sheol, they and all that belonged to them, and the land covered over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

⁵ Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to Yahweh for you."

⁸ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Samuel, "_⌊You must not cease_⌋* from crying out to Yahweh our God, so that he will deliver us from the hand of the Philistines."

¹⁹ Then all the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God so that we will not die, because we have added to all our sins by requesting a king for ourselves."

²³ Also, as for me, far be it from me _⌊that I should sin_⌋* against Yahweh by ceasing to pray for you! I will instruct you in the good and righteous way.

¹⁷ David spoke to Yahweh when he saw the angel destroying among the people, and he said, "Look, I have sinned and I have done wrong, but these sheep, what did they do? Please let your hand be against me and against the house of my father."

⁶ Then the king responded and said to the man of God, "Please entreat the favor of Yahweh your God, and pray for me that my hand may return to me." So the man of God entreated the face of Yahweh, and the hand of the king returned to him, as it was in the beginning.

¹ It happened many days later that the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, saying, "Go, present yourself to Ahab so that I may give rain on the surface of the earth." ² So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. ³ Ahab summoned Obadiah who was over the house. (Now Obadiah was fearing Yahweh greatly. ⁴ It had happened that when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them _⌊by fifties_⌋* in the cave and sustained them with food and water.) ⁵ Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the wadis.* Perhaps we may find green grass that we may keep horses and mules alive and that we might not lose any of the animals." ⁶ So they divided the land for themselves in order to pass through it; Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself. ⁷ It happened that Obadiah was on the way, and suddenly Elijah was there to meet him. When he recognized him, he fell on his face and said, "Is this you, my lord Elijah?" ⁸ He said to him, "I am. Go, say to your lord, 'Elijah is here.'" ⁹ He said, "How have I sinned that you are giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to kill me? ¹⁰ _⌊As Yahweh your God lives_⌋,* surely there is not a nation or a kingdom to which my lord has not sent me to seek you. If they would say, 'He is not here,' then he would make the kingdom or the nation swear that it could not find you. ¹¹ Now you are saying, 'Go, say to your lord: "Elijah is here." ' ¹² And it will happen that I will go from you and the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you up to where I do not know. Then I will come to tell Ahab, but he will not find you, and then he will kill me, even though your servant has feared Yahweh from my youth. ¹³ Has it not been told to my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh? I hid a hundred men of the prophets of Yahweh _⌊by fifties_⌋* in the cave, and I sustained them with food and water. ¹⁴ Now you are saying, 'Go, say to your lord: "Elijah is here," ' and he will kill me." ¹⁵ Elijah said, "_⌊As Yahweh of hosts lives_⌋,* before whom I stand, I will certainly show myself to him today." ¹⁶ So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and he told him, so Ahab went to meet Elijah. ¹⁷ When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is this you who throws Israel into confusion?" ¹⁸ He said, "I did not throw Israel into confusion; rather you and the house of your father have by forsaking the commands of Yahweh when you went after the Baals! ¹⁹ So then, send word and assemble all of Israel to me on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at the table of Jezebel." ²⁰ So Ahab sent word among the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and he assembled the prophets to Mount Carmel. ²¹ Elijah approached to all the people and said, "How long will you go limping over two opinions? If Yahweh is God, go after him; but if Baal, go after him." But the people did not answer him a word. ²² Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left a prophet of Yahweh, but the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men. ²³ Let them give us two bulls, and let them choose for themselves one bull, cut him in pieces, and put it on the wood, but don't let them start a fire on it. I will prepare the other bull and set it on the wood, but I will put no fire on it. ²⁴ Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh, and it shall be that the god who answers by fire, he is God."* Then all the people answered and said, "The word is good!" ²⁵ Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are the majority, and call on the name of your god, but don't set fire under it." ²⁶ So they took the bull that he allowed to them, prepared it, and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice and there was no answer, so they limped* about the altar which they had made. ²⁷ It happened at noon that Elijah mocked them and said, "Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god! Perhaps he is meditating, or _⌊is using the bathroom_⌋,* or is on a journey. Perhaps he is asleep and must wake up!" ²⁸ So they called out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves with swords and with spears as was their custom, until the blood poured out over them. ²⁹ It happened as noon passed, they raged until the time of the evening offering, but there was no voice, there was no answer, and no one paid attention. ³⁰ Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me," so all the people came closer to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh that had been destroyed. ³¹ Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of God came, saying, "Israel shall be your name." ³² With them, he built an altar in the name of Yahweh, and he made a trench _⌊which would have held_⌋* about two seahs of seed, all around the altar. ³³ And he arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces, and placed it on the wood.* Then he said, "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." ³⁴ He said, "Do it again!" They did it again. He said, "Do it a third time!" So they did it a third time. ³⁵ The water went all around the altar, and the trench also was filled with water. ³⁶ It happened at the offering of the evening oblation, Elijah the prophet went near, and he said, "O Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel; let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all of these things by your words. ³⁷ Answer me, O Yahweh, answer me; that this people may know that you, O Yahweh, are God and that you have turned their hearts back again." ³⁸ Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and it consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust; and the water which was in the trench it licked up! ³⁹ When all the people saw, they fell on their faces and said, "Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!" ⁴⁰ Then Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; don't let any man of them escape!" So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the wadi* of Kishon and killed them there. ⁴¹ Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of the noise of rain." ⁴² So Ahab went up to eat and to drink while Elijah went to the top of Carmel, bent down to the earth, and put his face between his knees. ⁴³ Then he said to his servant, "Please go and look in the direction of the sea." So he went up and looked; then he said, "There is nothing." Then he said, "Go back," seven times. ⁴⁴ It happened that at the seventh time, he said, "Look, there is a small cloud, as the hand of a man, coming up from the sea." Then Elijah said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Harness your horses and go down, lest the rain stop you.'" ⁴⁵ _⌊In no time_⌋* the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was heavy rain. Ahab rode and he went to Jezreel, ⁴⁶ but the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab as one comes to Jezreel.

¹¹ But Naaman became angry and he went and said, "Look, I said to myself, 'Surely he will come out, stand, call upon the name of Yahweh his God, and wave his hands over the spot; then he would take away the skin disease.'

² He sent Eliakim who was over the palace, Shebna the secretary, the elders, and the priests, all clothed in sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. ³ They said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah, 'A day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace is this day, for the children _⌊are about to be born_⌋,* but there is no strength to bear them. ⁴ Perhaps Yahweh your God will hear all of the words of the chief commander whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to insult the living God, and he will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the remainder who are left.'"

²² saying, "You must not touch my anointed nor do harm to my prophets!"

¹⁹ who _⌊shows no partiality to officials_⌋* and who _⌊does not take note of the noble more than of the insignificant_⌋,* for all of them are the work of his hands?

⁸ _⌊So then_⌋,* take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will pray for you,* for _⌊I will certainly accept his prayer_⌋,* so that it will not be done with you* according to your folly, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has."

¹⁴ Intimate fellowship with Yahweh is for those who fear him, and he makes known his covenant to them.

⁹ that he made with Abraham, and by his oath swore to Isaac. ¹⁰ He then confirmed it to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, ¹¹ saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the allotment that is your* inheritance." ¹² When they were _⌊few in number_⌋*— a trifle—and were sojourners in it, ¹³ and they wandered about _⌊among the nations_⌋,* from one kingdom to another people, ¹⁴ he allowed no one to oppress them, and he rebuked kings on account of them, ¹⁵ "Do not touch my anointed ones, nor harm my prophets."

¹¹ So Yahweh said to me, "You must not pray for this people, for their happiness.*

¹ Then Yahweh said to me, "Even if Moses and Samuel stood _⌊before me_⌋,* my heart would not be to this people. Send them away from my _⌊sight_⌋,* and let them go out.

¹⁸ But if they are prophets, and if there is with them the word of Yahweh, let them please plead with Yahweh of hosts, that the vessels that are left over in the _⌊temple_⌋* of Yahweh, and the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem, must not go to Babylon.'

¹⁸ _⌊When I say_⌋* to the wicked, 'Surely you will die,' and you do not warn him and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way _⌊so that he may live_⌋,* that wicked person will die because of his guilt, and from your hand I will seek his blood.

⁸ _⌊When I say_⌋* to the wicked, 'Wicked one, you will certainly die,' and you _⌊did not speak_⌋* to warn the wicked from his way, he, the wicked, will die by his guilt, but his blood I will seek from your hand.

¹⁴ And when I say to the wicked, 'Certainly you will die,' but* he returns from his sin and he does justice and righteousness— ¹⁵ for example, the wicked returns a pledge for a loan, he restores _⌊stolen property_⌋,* he goes in the statutes of life so as not to do injustice—certainly he will live; he will not die. ¹⁶ All of his _⌊sins that he committed_⌋,* they will not be remembered against* him, and he did justice and righteousness; certainly he will live.

⁴ The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

¹ Although* God spoke long ago in many parts* and in many ways to the fathers by the prophets,

⁴ Marriage must be held in honor by all, and the marriage bed be undefiled, because God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers.

¹⁴ Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the elders of the church and they should pray over him, anointing him with olive oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵ And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins _⌊he will be forgiven_⌋*. ¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.

¹⁶ If anyone should see his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he should ask, and he will grant life to him, to those who sin not leading to death. (There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should ask about that.

⁵ And if anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouth and consumes their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, in this way he must be killed. ⁶ These have the authority to shut the sky, so that _⌊it does not rain_⌋* during the days of their prophecy. And they have authority over the waters, to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with every plague as often as they wish.

¹⁸ Then Pharaoh called for Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have slept with your wife! Then you would have brought guilt upon us!"

⁷ And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. And the men were distressed and very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by having sexual relations with the daughter of Jacob—_⌊something that_⌋* should not be done.

²⁴ And _⌊about three months later_⌋* it was told to Judah, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the whore, and now, behold, she has conceived by prostitution." And Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned."

²¹ And Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you that you brought on them such a great sin?"

³⁵ And Yahweh afflicted the people because they had made the bull calf that Aaron had made.

¹⁰ " 'As for* a man who commits adultery with a man's wife, who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, both the man who commits adultery and the woman who commits adultery shall surely be put to death.

²⁵ And Joshua said, "Why did you bring us trouble? Yahweh will bring you trouble on this day." And all Israel stoned them* with stones;* and they burned them with fire after they stoned them with stones.

¹⁸ Then he said, "Why is my lord pursuing after his servant? For what have I done? And what evil is in my hand? ¹⁹ And so then, please let my lord the king listen to the words of his servant: If Yahweh has incited you against me, may he delight in an offering; but if _⌊it is mortals_⌋,* may they be accursed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, for they have driven me away today from sharing in the inheritance of Yahweh, saying, 'Go, serve other gods!'

⁵ Then _⌊the anger of David was kindled_⌋* against the man, and he said to Nathan, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* the man who has done this _⌊deserves to die_⌋!*

¹⁰ So then, a sword will not turn away from your house forever, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife!' ¹¹ Thus says Yahweh, 'Look, I am going to raise up evil against you from within your house, and I will take your women before your eyes, and I will give them to your neighbor, and he shall sleep with your wives _⌊in broad daylight_⌋.*

¹² Then Tamar said to him, "No, my brother! Do not force me, for such a thing has not been done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing!

¹⁰ He who misleads the upright onto the way of evil, into his pits he will fall. But as for the blameless, they will inherit good.

¹¹ For there is no partiality with God.

¹¹ whom it is necessary to silence, whoever are ruining whole families by* teaching things which must not be taught for the sake of dishonest gain.

¹² and it shall happen that, if the Egyptians see you, then they will say, 'This is his wife,' then they will kill me but let you live.

¹² And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the boy; do not do anything to him. For now I know that you are _⌊one who fears_⌋* God, since you have not withheld your son, your only child, from me."

¹⁸ On the third day Joseph said to them, "Do this and you will live; I fear God.

¹⁵ The former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people, and they took food and wine from them, besides forty shekels. Also, their servants controlled the people, but I did not do so because of the fear of God.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose* name was Job. That* man was blameless and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil.

²⁸ And to the human beings he said, 'Look, the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.'"

⁴ All who do evil—do they not know, they who eat my people as though they were eating bread? They do not call on Yahweh.

¹ For the music director. Of David, the servant of Yahweh.*
An oracle: the wicked has rebellion in the midst of his* heart. There is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his eyes, hating to detect his iniquity.* ³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit. He has ceased to have insight and to do good. ⁴ He plans sin on his bed. He puts himself on a way that is not good. He does not reject evil.

⁷ Fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; wisdom and instruction, fools despise.

⁵ then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and the knowledge of God you will find.

¹³ The fear of Yahweh is hatred of evil, pride, and arrogance and an evil way. And I hate a mouth of perversity.

⁶ By loyalty and faithfulness, iniquity will be covered over,* and by fear of Yahweh _⌊one turns_⌋* from evil.

¹⁸ The fear of God is not before their eyes."*

²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of the wife of Abram was Sarai, and the name of the wife of Nahor was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

¹³ Please say you are my sister so that it will go well for me on your account. _⌊Then I will live_⌋* on account of you."

²² Abstain from every form of evil.

¹ And Yahweh said to Abram, "Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you.

⁹ _⌊And Abram kept moving on_⌋,* toward the Negev.

¹¹ And it happened that as he drew near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, "Look now, I know that you are a woman beautiful of appearance, ¹² and it shall happen that, if the Egyptians see you, then they will say, 'This is his wife,' then they will kill me but let you live. ¹³ Please say you are my sister so that it will go well for me on your account. _⌊Then I will live_⌋* on account of you." ¹⁴ And it happened that as Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. ¹⁵ And the officials of Pharaoh saw her, and they praised her beauty to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to the house of Pharaoh. ¹⁶ And he dealt well with Abram on account of her, and he had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. ¹⁷ Then* Yahweh afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues on account of the matter of Sarai the wife of Abram. ¹⁸ Then Pharaoh called for Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? ¹⁹ Why did you say 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to myself as a wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go." ²⁰ And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him, and then sent him and his wife and all that was with him away.

²¹ And Saul said to them, "May you be blessed by Yahweh, for you have shown me compassion!

⁵ They encourage themselves in the evil matter. They talk of secretly laying snares. They say, "Who will see them?"

⁹ So Peter said to her, "How is it that it was agreed by you two* to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!"

³ and said to him, 'Go out from your land and from your relatives and come to the land that I will show you.' ⁴ Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and* settled in Haran. And from there, after his father died, he caused him to move to this land in which you now live. ⁵ And he did not give him an inheritance in it—not even a footstep*—and he promised to give it* to him for his possession, and to his descendants after him, _⌊although he did not have_⌋** a child.

⁸ By faith Abraham, when he* was called, obeyed to go out to a place that he was going to receive for an inheritance, and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

¹⁶ And he dealt well with Abram on account of her, and he had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

² And Abraham said about Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

¹¹ And Abraham said, "Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place; they will kill me on account of the matter of my wife.

⁹ Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you want what is on the left, then I will go right; if you want what is on the right, I will go left."

¹⁰ You shall dwell with us and the land shall be before you; settle and trade in it, and acquire property in it."

⁶ The land of Egypt is before you. Settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land. Let them live in the land of Goshen, and if you know there is among them men of ability, then appoint them overseers of my own livestock."

⁵ Did not he himself say to me, 'She is my sister'? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' With integrity of my heart and with cleanness of my hands I did this."

⁶⁵ And she said to the servant, "Who is this man walking around in the field to meet us?" And the servant said, "That is my master." And she took her* veil and covered herself.

³ But Joab said, "May Yahweh add to the people a hundred times what they are! Are they not, O my lord the king, all of them the king's servants? Why does my lord seek this? Why would he bring guilt to Israel?" ⁴ But the word of the king prevailed over Joab. Then he went about through all Israel and came to Jerusalem. ⁵ And Joab gave the number of the enrollment of the people to David. And it happened that all Israel was one million one hundred thousand men drawing a sword, and in Judah were four hundred and seventy thousand men drawing a sword. ⁶ But he did not count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the word of the king was repulsive to Joab.

⁸ Do not rebuke a scoffer, lest he hate you; rebuke the wise and he will love you. ⁹ Give to a wise one and he will become more wise; _⌊teach_⌋* a righteous one and he will increase learning.

¹ He who loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates rebuke is stupid.

¹² A ring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a rebuke of the wise to the ear of a listener.

⁵ Better a rebuke that is open than a love that is hidden.

⁶ And the captain* of the ship approached him and said to him, "Why are you _⌊sound asleep_⌋?* Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps your god* will take notice of us and we won't perish!"

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and discipline. Be zealous, therefore, and repent!

³¹ When Yahweh saw that Leah was unloved he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

¹¹ So they sent and gathered all the rulers of the Philistines, and they said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel and let it return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people." For a _⌊deadly confusion_⌋* was throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. ¹² The men who did not die were struck with the tumors,* so that the cry of the city for help went up to heaven.

¹⁰ that they may offer incense offerings to the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king and his children.

⁹ So* Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did just as Yahweh had told them, and _⌊Yahweh accepted Job's prayer_⌋.* ¹⁰ Then* Yahweh returned Job's fortune when he prayed to him on behalf of his friends. Thus* Yahweh increased _⌊all that Job had twice as much as before_⌋.*

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination of Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

²⁹ Yahweh is far from the wicked, but the prayers of the righteous he will hear.

¹¹ Thus says Yahweh, the holy one of Israel, and its _⌊maker_⌋:* "Ask me of the things to come _⌊about_⌋* my children, and you command me about the work of my hands.

⁷ "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened for you.

²² And whatever you ask in prayer, if you* believe, you will receive."

²⁴ And indeed, all the prophets from Samuel and all those who followed him* have spoken about and proclaimed these days.

⁶ Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

²⁵ Brothers, pray for us.*

¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.

² And Sarai said to Abram, "Look, please, Yahweh has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my servant; perhaps _⌊I will have children by her_⌋."* And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

² And Jacob _⌊became angry_⌋* with Rachel. And he said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?"

⁶ (Now her rival wife would provoke her severely in order to upset her because Yahweh had closed her womb.)

¹⁰ So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark of God came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, saying, "They have brought around the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our* people!"
