¹ And Jacob _⌊continued his journey_⌋* and went to the land of the Easterners.* ² And he looked, and behold, there was a well in the field, and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying beside it, for out of that well the flocks were watered. And the stone on the mouth of the well was large. ³ And when all the flocks were gathered there, they rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well. And they watered the sheep and returned the stone upon the mouth of the well to its place. ⁴ And Jacob said to them, "My brothers, where are you from?" And they said, "We are from Haran." ⁵ And he said to them, "Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him." ⁶ And he said to them, "_⌊Is he well_⌋?"* And they said, "He is well. Now look, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep." ⁷ And he said, "Look, it is still _⌊broad daylight_⌋;* it is not the time for the livestock to be gathered. Give water to the sheep and go, pasture them." ⁸ And they said, "We are not able, until all the flocks are gathered. Then the stone is rolled away from the mouth of the well, and we water the sheep." ⁹ While he was speaking with them, Rachel came with the sheep which belonged to her father, for she was pasturing them. ¹⁰ And it happened that, when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother, Jacob drew near and rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother. ¹¹ And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept. ¹² And Jacob told Rachel that he was the relative of her father, and that he was the son of Rebekah. And she ran and told her father. ¹³ And it happened that when Laban heard the message about Jacob, the son of his sister, he ran to meet him. And he embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things. ¹⁴ And Laban said to him, "Surely you are my flesh and my bone!" And he stayed with him a month. ¹⁵ Then Laban said to Jacob, "Just because you are my brother should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wage should be." ¹⁶ Now Laban had two daughters. The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. ¹⁷ Now the eyes of Leah were dull, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. ¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel and said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter." ¹⁹ Then Laban said, "Better that I give her to you than I give her to another man. Stay with me." ²⁰ And Jacob worked for Rachel seven years, but they were as a few days in his eyes because he loved her. ²¹ And Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, that I may go in to her, for _⌊my time_⌋* is completed." ²² So Laban gathered all the men of the place and prepared a feast. ²³ And it happened that in the evening he took Leah his daughter and brought her to him, and he went in to her. ²⁴ And Laban gave Zilpah his female servant to her, to Leah his daughter as a female servant. ²⁵ And it happened that in the morning, behold, it was Leah! And he said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Now why did you deceive me?" ²⁶ Then Laban said, "_⌊It is not the custom_⌋* in our country to give the younger before the firstborn. ²⁷ Complete the week of this one,* then I will also give you the other, _⌊on the condition that you will work for me_⌋* another seven years." ²⁸ And Jacob did so. So he completed the week of this one,* then he gave Rachel his daughter to him as a wife. ²⁹ And Laban gave Bilhah his female servant to Rachel his daughter as a female servant. ³⁰ Then he also went in to Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with him yet another seven years.

³² Then Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, "Because Yahweh has noticed my misery, that I am unloved. Now my husband will love me."

²² And while Israel was living in that land Reuben went and had sexual relations with Bilhah, his father's concubine. And Israel heard about it. ²³ The sons of Leah: The firstborn of Jacob was Reuben. Then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

¹ Then Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather together so that I can tell you what will happen with you in _⌊days to come_⌋.* ² Assemble and hear, O sons of Jacob! Listen to Israel your father! ³ Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, and the firstfruit of my vigor, excelling in rank and excelling in power. ⁴ Unstable* as water, you shall not excel any longer, for you went up upon the bed of your father, then defiled it. You went up upon my couch! ⁵ Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords. Let me* not come into their council. ⁶ Let not my person* be joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and at their pleasure they hamstrung cattle. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel. I will divide them in Jacob, and I will scatter them in Israel. ⁸ Judah, as for you, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies. The sons of your father shall bow down to you. ⁹ Judah is a lion's cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bowed down; he crouched like a lion and as a lioness. Who shall rouse him? ¹⁰ The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff between his feet, until Shiloh comes. And to him shall be the obedience of nations. ¹¹ Binding his donkey to the vine and his donkey's colt to the choice vine, he washes his clothing in the wine and his garment in the blood of grapes. ¹² The eyes are darker than wine, and the teeth whiter than milk. ¹³ Zebulun shall settle by the shore of the sea. He shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon. ¹⁴ Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds. ¹⁵ He saw a resting place that was good, and land that was pleasant. So he bowed his shoulder to the burden and became a servant of forced labor. ¹⁶ Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷ Dan shall be a serpent on the way, a viper on the road that bites the heels of a horse, so that its rider falls backward. ¹⁸ I wait for your salvation, O Yahweh. ¹⁹ Bandits shall attack Gad, but he shall attack their heels. ²⁰ Asher's food is delicious, and he shall provide from the king's delicacies. ²¹ Naphtali is a doe running free that puts forth beautiful words. ²² Joseph is the bough* of a fruitful vine, a fruitful bough* by a spring. His branches climb over the wall. ²³ _⌊The archers_⌋* fiercely attacked him. They shot arrows at him and were hostile to him. ²⁴ But his bow remained in a steady position; _⌊his arms_⌋* were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob. From there is the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel. ²⁵ Because of the God of your father he will help you and by Shaddai* he will bless you with the blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and the womb. ²⁶ The blessings of your father are superior to the blessings of my ancestors, to the bounty of the everlasting hills. May they be on the head of Joseph, and on the forehead of the prince of his brothers. ²⁷ Benjamin is a devouring wolf, devouring the prey in the morning, and dividing the plunder in the evening. ²⁸ All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, each according to their blessing. ²⁹ Then he instructed them and said to them, "I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me among my ancestors* in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, ³⁰ in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah that is before* Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site. ³¹ There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife. And there I buried Leah— ³² the purchase of the field and the cave which was in it from the Hittites." ³³ When Jacob finished instructing his sons he drew his feet up to the bed. Then he took his last breath and was gathered to his people.

¹ And these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt; with Jacob, they each came with his _⌊family_⌋:* ² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; ³ Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; ⁴ Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ And _⌊all those who descended from Jacob_⌋* were seventy individuals,* and Joseph was in Egypt.

¹⁴ These are the heads of _⌊their families_⌋.*
The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, are Enoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These are the clans of Reuben. ¹⁵ And the sons of Simeon are Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jakin and Zohar and Shaul the son of the Canaanitess.* These are the clans of Simeon. ¹⁶ And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their genealogies:* Gershon and Kohath and Merari, and the years of the life of Levi were _⌊one hundred and thirty-seven years_⌋.* ¹⁷ The sons of Gershon are Libni and Shimei according to their clans. ¹⁸ And the sons of Kohath are Amram and Izhar and Hebron and Uzziel, and the years of the life of Kohath were _⌊one hundred and thirty-three years_⌋.*

⁵ And these are the names of the men who will _⌊assist you_⌋:* from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

²⁰ The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, every male individually from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ²¹ those who were counted from the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred.

¹⁰ "The standard of the camp of Reuben will be to the south according to their divisions. The leader of the descendants will be Elizur son of Shedeur. ¹¹ And his division and the _⌊ones counted_⌋* are forty-six thousand five hundred. ¹² Those encamped next to him will be the tribe of Simeon. The leader of the descendants of Simeon will be Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. ¹³ And his division and the _⌊ones counted_⌋* are fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

⁴ "Take a census of the community from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, just as Yahweh commanded Moses."
The Israelites who went out from the land of Egypt were: ⁵ Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, the descendants* of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;* ⁶ of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites;* of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.* ⁷ These are the clans of the Reubenites,* and the ones counted of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. ⁸ The children of Pallu: Eliab. ⁹ The children of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the same Dathan and Abiram who were appointed of the community, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they rebelled against Yahweh, ¹⁰ and the land opened its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, when that company died, when the fire consumed two hundred and fifty men, and they were a sign.* ¹¹ The children* of Korah, however, did not die.

⁶ "May Reuben live, and may he not die, _⌊and let his number not be few_⌋."*

¹ These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, ² Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. ³ The sons of Judah: Er, Onan and Shelah; these three were born to him from Bathshua the Canaanite. Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and he put him to death. ⁴ And Tamar his daughter-in-law bore Perez and Zerah to him. The sons of Judah were five in all. ⁵ The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul. ⁶ The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara, five in all. ⁷ The son of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who acted unfaithfully in the matter of the devoted thing. ⁸ And the son of Ethan was Azariah. ⁹ The sons of Hezron who were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb. ¹⁰ And Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah. ¹¹ And Nahshon fathered Salma, and Salma fathered Boaz. ¹² And Boaz fathered Obed, and Obed fathered Jesse. ¹³ And Jesse fathered Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, ¹⁴ Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, ¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, David the seventh. ¹⁶ And their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three. ¹⁷ And Abigail bore Amasa, and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite. ¹⁸ And Caleb the son of Hezron fathered children by Azubah his wife and by Jerioth. And these were her sons: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. ¹⁹ And when Azubah died, Caleb married* Ephrathah, and she bore Hur to him. ²⁰ And Hur fathered Uri, and Uri fathered Bezalel. ²¹ And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Makir the father of Gilead. And he married* her when he was sixty years old. And she bore Segub to him. ²² And Segub fathered Jair, and he had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. ²³ And Geshur and Aram took Havvoth-Jair from them, Kenath and its villages, sixty cities. All these were the _⌊descendants_⌋* of Makir, the father of Gilead. ²⁴ And after the death of Hezron in Caleb-Ephrathah, Abijah the wife of Hezron bore to him Ashhur, the father of Tekoa. ²⁵ And the sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron were Ram his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. ²⁶ And Jerahmeel had another wife, and her name was Atarah. She was the mother of Onam. ²⁷ The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. ²⁸ And the sons of Onam were Shammai and Jada. And the sons of Shammai were Nadab and Abishur. ²⁹ And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bore to him Ahban and Molid. ³⁰ And the sons of Nadab were Seled and Appaim. And Seled died without children. ³¹ And the sons of Appaim: Ishi. The sons of Ishi: Sheshan. The sons of Sheshan: Ahlai. ³² And the sons of Jada the brother of Shammai: Jether and Jonathan. And Jether died without children. ³³ And the sons of Jonathan: Peleth and Zaza. These were the children of Jerahmeel. ³⁴ And Sheshan had no sons, only daughters, but Sheshan had an Egyptian slave, and his name was Jarha. ³⁵ So Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha his slave for a wife, and she bore to him Attai. ³⁶ And Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad. ³⁷ And Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered Obed. ³⁸ And Obed fathered Jehu, and Jehu fathered Azariah. ³⁹ And Azariah fathered Helez, and Helez fathered Eleasah. ⁴⁰ And Eleasah fathered Sismai, and Sismai fathered Shallum. ⁴¹ And Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered Elishama. ⁴² And the sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel were Mesha his firstborn; he was the father of Ziph. The sons of Mareshah: Hebron. ⁴³ And the sons of Hebron were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. ⁴⁴ And Shema fathered Raham, the father of Jorkeam. And Rekem fathered Shammai. ⁴⁵ And the son of Shammai was Maon, and Maon was the father of Beth-Zur. ⁴⁶ And Ephah, the concubine of Caleb, gave birth to Haran, Moza, and Gazez. And Haran fathered Gazez. ⁴⁷ And the sons of Jahdai were Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph. ⁴⁸ Maacah, the concubine of Caleb, gave birth to Sheber and Tirhanah. ⁴⁹ She also gave birth to Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah and the father of Gibea; and the daughter of Caleb was Acsah. ⁵⁰ These were the _⌊descendants_⌋* of Caleb.
The sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath-Jearim, ⁵¹ Salma the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth-Gader. ⁵² And Shobal the father of Kiriath-Jearim had other sons: Haroeh, half of the Menuhoth. ⁵³ And the families of Kiriath-Jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. From these descended the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites. ⁵⁴ The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Ataroth-Beth-Joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites. ⁵⁵ And the families of the scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. These were the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Recab.

¹ Now Benjamin fathered Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second, Aharah the third, ² Nohah the fourth, and Rapha the fifth. ³ And Bela had sons: Addar, Gera, Abihud, ⁴ Abishua, Naaman, Ahoah, ⁵ Gera, Shephuphan, and Huram. ⁶ And these are the sons of Ehud (these were heads of the _⌊families_⌋* for the inhabitants of Geba, and they took them away to Manahath): ⁷ Naaman, Ahijah, and Gera, who took them away. And he fathered Uzza and Ahihud. ⁸ And Shaharaim fathered children in the fields of Moab after he had sent them away—Hushim and Baara, his wives. ⁹ And he fathered by Hodesh his wife Jobab, Zibia, Mesha, Malcam, ¹⁰ Jeuz, Sakia, and Mirmah. These were his sons, heads of the _⌊families_⌋.* ¹¹ And by Husham he fathered Abitub and Elpaal. ¹² The sons of Elpaal: Eber, Misham, Shemed (he built Ono and Lod with _⌊its towns_⌋),* ¹³ and Beriah and Shema who were the heads of the _⌊families_⌋* of the inhabitants of Aijalon (they themselves chased away the inhabitants of Gath). ¹⁴ Now Ahio, Shashak, Jeremoth, ¹⁵ Zebadiah, Arad, Eder, ¹⁶ Michael, Ishpah, and Joha were sons of Beriah. ¹⁷ And Zebadiah, Meshullam, Hizki, Heber, ¹⁸ Ishmerai, Izliah, and Jobab were the sons of Elpaal. ¹⁹ And Jakim, Zikri, Zabdi, ²⁰ Elienai, Zillethai, Eliel, ²¹ Adaiah, Beraiah, and Shimrath were the sons of Shimei. ²² And Ishpan, Eber, Eliel, ²³ Abdon, Zikri, Hanan, ²⁴ Hananiah, Elam, Antothijah, ²⁵ Iphdeiah, and Peniel were the sons of Shashak. ²⁶ And Shamsherai, Shehariah, Athaliah, ²⁷ Jaareshiah, Elijah, and Zikri were the sons of Jeroham. ²⁸ These were the heads of the _⌊families_⌋* according to their generations, chiefs. These lived in Jerusalem. ²⁹ And Jeiel* the father of Gibeon lived in Gibeon. And the name of his wife was Maacah. ³⁰ And his firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Nadab, ³¹ Gedor, Ahio, Zeker, ³² and Mikloth (he fathered Shimeah). Now these also lived nearby their brothers in Jerusalem with their kinsmen. ³³ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal. ³⁴ And the son of Jonathan was Merib-baal, and Merib-baal fathered Micah. ³⁵ And the sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tarea, and Ahaz. ³⁶ And Ahaz fathered Jehoaddah, and Jehoaddah fathered Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. And Zimri fathered Moza. ³⁷ And Moza fathered Binea; Raphah was his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son. ³⁸ And Azel had six sons, and these are their names: Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel. ³⁹ And the sons of Eshek his brother: Ulam his firstborn, Jeush the second, and Eliphelet the third. ⁴⁰ And the sons of Ulam were men who were mighty warriors, bowmen, and they had many sons and grandsons, one hundred and fifty. All these were Benjaminites.
