¹ For look, the Lord Yahweh of hosts is removing _⌊every source of support_⌋* from Jerusalem and from Judah: all of the supplies of bread and all of the supplies of water, ² mighty warrior and man of war, judge and prophet, and diviner and elder, ³ captain of fifty and the honorable men of rank, and counselor and skillful magicians and skillful enchanter. ⁴ And I will make boys their princes, and children shall rule over them. ⁵ And the people will be oppressed _⌊by each other_⌋* and a man by his neighbor. The boy will act arrogantly toward the elder, and the dishonorable toward the honorable. ⁶ Indeed, a man will seize his brother in the house of his father: "_⌊You have a cloak_⌋;* you shall be a leader for us, and this heap of ruins shall be under your hand!" ⁷ He will lift up his voice on that day, saying, "I will not be a healer; in my house there is no bread and there is no cloak. You shall not make me the leader of the people!" ⁸ For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen because their speech and their deeds are against Yahweh, defying the eyes of his glory. ⁹ The look on their faces testifies against them and they declare their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have dealt out evil to themselves. ¹⁰ Tell the innocent* that it is good for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. ¹¹ Woe to the wicked!* It is bad! For what is done by his hands will be done to him. ¹² My people—children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders are misleading you, and they confuse the course of your paths. ¹³ Yahweh takes his stand to conduct a legal case and takes his stand to judge the peoples. ¹⁴ Yahweh enters into judgment with the elders of his people and its princes. "And you! You have devoured the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses! ¹⁵ _⌊Why_⌋* do you crush my people and grind the face of the poor?"
_⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh of hosts. ¹⁶ And Yahweh said: "Because* the daughters of Zion are haughty, and they walk with outstretched neck, and they give flirting glances with their eyes, _⌊mincing along as they go_⌋,* and _⌊with their feet they rattle their bangles_⌋,* ¹⁷ the Lord will make the heads* of the daughters of Zion scabby, and Yahweh will lay their foreheads bare." ¹⁸ In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets and the headbands and the crescent necklaces, ¹⁹ the pendants and the bracelets and the veils, ²⁰ the headdresses and the armlets and the sashes, and the _⌊perfume boxes_⌋* and the amulets, ²¹ the signet rings and the nose rings, ²² the festal robes and the mantles, and the cloaks and the handbags, ²³ and the mirrors and the linen garments, and the turbans and the wraps. ²⁴ And this shall happen: There will be a stench instead of perfume, and a rope instead of a sash, and baldness instead of a well-set hairdo, and a clothing wrap of sackcloth instead of a rich robe, branding instead of beauty. ²⁵ Your men shall fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle. ²⁶ And her* gates shall lament and mourn, and she shall be banished; she shall sit upon the ground.

²⁶ At my breaking the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread* for you, then* ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall return your bread by weight; and you shall eat it, and you shall not be satisfied.

¹⁶ Then he called for a famine upon the land; he broke every _⌊supply_⌋* of bread.

²⁴ Therefore, the declaration of the Lord Yahweh of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: "Ah, I will be relieved of my enemies, and I will avenge myself on my foes.

²² Turn away from humanity, who has breath in its nostrils,* for by* what is it esteemed?

¹³ Therefore my people will go into exile without knowledge, and their* nobles* will be men of hunger, and their* multitude is parched with thirst.

¹² But* Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your masters and you? Was it not for the people who sit on the wall, to eat their dung and drink their urine* with you?"

²² Thus says your Lord, Yahweh, and your God pleads the cause of his people: "Look! I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering. You shall not _⌊continue_⌋* to drink the goblet, the cup of my wrath, any longer.

²¹ So King Zedekiah commanded, and they handed Jeremiah over in the courtyard of the guard, and they gave to him a round loaf of bread from the street of the bakers _⌊every day_⌋* until the finishing of all the bread from the city. And Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard.

⁹ "My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, in that they have thrown him into the pit,* and he will die _⌊there_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* starvation, for there is no longer any bread in the city."

¹⁶ And he said to me, "Son of man,* look, I am going to break the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread in Jerusalem, and they will eat bread by weight, _⌊anxiously_⌋,* and _⌊rationed water_⌋,* and they will drink with horror, ¹⁷ so that they will lack food and water, and they will be appalled _⌊with one another_⌋,* and they will waste away because of their guilt.*

¹³ "Son of man,* when a land sins against me by _⌊acting very unfaithfully_⌋,* then I will stretch out my hand against it, and I will break for it the _⌊supply of food_⌋,* and I will send against it famine, and I will cut it off, both human and animal.

¹⁴ He deported all of Jerusalem: all of the commanders, ten thousand of the skilled warriors, and the artisans; no one was left over except the poorest of the people of the land. ¹⁵ He deported Jehoiachin to Babylon; the mother of the king, the wives of the king, his court officials, and the citizenry of the land he caused to go into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: ¹⁶ of all of the skilled men, seven thousand, and of the skilled craftsmen and the artisans, one thousand. All of the mighty warriors _⌊fit for war_⌋* the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.

⁹ We do not see our signs, and there is no longer a prophet. No one with us knows how long.

¹³ and against all the lofty and lifted up cedars of Lebanon, and against all the large trees of Bashan, ¹⁴ and against all the high mountains, and against all the lofty hills, ¹⁵ and against every kind of high tower, and against every kind of fortified wall,

¹⁴ So Yahweh cut off head and tail from Israel, palm branch and reed in one day. ¹⁵ Elders* and _⌊the respectable_⌋* are the head, and prophets* who teach lies* are the tail.

¹² They hang princes by their hand; they do not show respect before elders. ¹³ Young men must carry a hand-mill and boys stumble under the wood. ¹⁴ Elders are no longer at the gate, young men no longer play stringed instruments.

¹² And he said to me, "Have you seen, son of man,* what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in the inner rooms of his idol, for they are saying, 'Yahweh is not seeing us; Yahweh has abandoned the land.'"

⁵ And to the others he said in my hearing, "Go through the city behind him and kill! Your eyes shall not take pity, and you shall not have compassion.

¹³ And he took from the seed of the kingship, and he made with him a covenant, and _⌊he brought him under oath_⌋,* and he took the rulers of the land,

³ And I will cut off the ruler from its midst and I will kill all of its officials with him," says Yahweh.

¹⁰ And Moses said to Yahweh, "Please, Lord, I am not a man of words, _⌊neither recently nor in the past nor since your speaking_⌋* to your servant, because I am heavy of mouth and of tongue."

¹⁴ _⌊And Yahweh was angry with_⌋* Moses and said, "Is there not Aaron your brother the Levite? I know that he certainly can speak, and also there he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will rejoice in his heart. ¹⁵ And you will speak to him, and you will put words in his mouth, and I myself will be with your mouth and with his mouth, and I will teach you what you must do. ¹⁶ And he will speak for you to the people, _⌊and then_⌋* he will be to you as a mouth, and you will be to him as a god.

²¹ And you will select from all the people men of ability, fearers of God, trustworthy men, haters of dishonest gain,* and you will appoint such men over them as commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, and commanders of tens.

¹⁵ And so I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and then I appointed them as leaders over you as commanders of groups of thousands and commanders of groups of hundreds and commanders of groups of fifties and commanders of groups of tens as officials for your tribes.

¹⁸ And he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, "What type were the men whom you killed at Tabor?" And they said, "_⌊They were like you_⌋;* each one of them had the appearance of the sons of the king."

¹² He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and those _⌊to do his plowing_⌋* and to reap his harvest, and those to make weapons of war and the equipment for his chariots.

⁷ So then, O Yahweh, you are my God. You have made your servant king in place of David my father though I am a young boy. I do not know going out or coming in. ⁸ Your servant is in the middle of your people whom you have chosen; a great people who cannot be counted or numbered because of abundance. ⁹ Give to your servant a listening heart to judge your people, to discern between good and bad, because who is able to judge this, your difficult people?"

¹ Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem.

¹ Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

² Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.

⁵ Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the eyes of Yahweh his God.

⁹ Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the eyes of Yahweh.

¹¹ Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.

¹⁶ Woe to you, O land, when your king is a youth and your princes feast in the morning.

³² " '_⌊Before_⌋* old age you* shall get up, and you* shall show respect for an old person; and you* shall revere your God; I am Yahweh.

⁵ King David came up to Bahurim and suddenly a man from there was coming out from the family of the house of Saul, and his name was Shimei the son of Gera. _⌊He was cursing as he came out_⌋.* ⁶ And he threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David and at all the people and at all the mighty warriors on his right and on his left. ⁷ Shimei said while cursing him, "Go out, go out, you _⌊man of bloodshed_⌋,* you _⌊man of wickedness_⌋.* ⁸ Yahweh has returned on you all the blood of the household of Saul _⌊whom you have supplanted as king_⌋,* and Yahweh has given the kingship into the hand of Absalom your son. Look, you are in disaster for you are a man of blood." ⁹ Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please let me go over and take off his head."

²³ Then he went up from there to Bethel; as he was going up along the way, young boys came out from the city and mocked at him and said to him, "Go up, baldhead; go up, baldhead!"

¹ "But now those younger than I, as far as days, laugh at me, whose fathers I rejected for setting with the dogs of my sheep and goats. ² Moreover, _⌊what use to me is the strength of their hands_⌋?* With them, vigor is destroyed. ³ Through want and through barren hunger they are gnawing in the dry region in the darkness of desolation and waste. ⁴ They are picking salt herbs, the leaves of bushes, and the roots of broom trees to warm themselves. ⁵ They were driven out from fellow people; they shout at them as at a* thief, ⁶ _⌊so that they dwell_⌋* in holes of the ground and in the rocks. ⁷ They bray among the bushes; they are gathered under the nettles. ⁸ _⌊A senseless crowd_⌋,* yes, _⌊a disreputable brood_⌋,* they were cast out from the land. ⁹ "But now I am their mocking song, and I have become a byword for them. ¹⁰ They abhor me; they keep aloof from me, and they do not withhold spit from my face ¹¹ because he has loosened his bowstring and humbled me, and they have thrown off restraint _⌊in my presence_⌋.* ¹² On the right hand the brood rises* up; _⌊they put me to flight_⌋,* and they build up their _⌊siege ramps_⌋* against me.

⁵ There is an evil I have seen under the sun— it is an error that proceeds from a ruler! ⁶ The fool is set in many high places, but the rich sit in lowly places. ⁷ I have even seen slaves riding on horses and princes walking like slaves on the earth!

⁴ Ah, sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly. They have forsaken Yahweh; they have despised the holy one of Israel. They are estranged and gone backward.

¹⁹ The land was burned through the wrath of Yahweh of hosts, and the people became like fire fuel. _⌊People had no compassion toward each other_⌋.* ²⁰ They devoured on the right but still were hungry and devoured on the left but they were not satisfied. Each one devoured the flesh of his arm, ²¹ Manasseh devoured Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; together they were against Judah. In all of this his anger has not turned away, and still his hand is stretched out.

¹³ And the jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and the enemies of Judah shall be cut off. Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not be an enemy of Ephraim.

³ And they bend their tongue like their bow, for falsehood and not truth is superior in the land, for they go forth* from evil to evil, and they do not know me," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ⁴ "Let everyone be on your guard against his neighbor, and you must not trust in any brother, for everyone surely betrays, and every neighbor goes about with slander. ⁵ And everyone deceives his neighbor, and they do not speak the truth, they have taught their tongues* to speak lies,* they are tired from going astray. ⁶ Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit, upon* deceit they refuse to know me," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ⁷ Therefore, thus says Yahweh of hosts:
"Look, I am about to refine them, and I will test them, for what else can I do, because of the _⌊presence_⌋* of the daughter of my people? ⁸ Their tongue is a murderous arrow, it speaks deceit. With his mouth he speaks peace with his neighbor, but in his inner parts he sets up his ambush.

¹⁷ "But there is nothing in your eyes and your heart _⌊except_⌋* your unlawful gain, and on shedding the blood of the innocent, and on committing oppression and extortion."

⁶ Look! The princes of Israel, each one according to his strength,* they are in you _⌊for the shedding of blood_⌋.* ⁷ They have treated father and mother with contempt in you; _⌊they violated_⌋* the alien with* extortion; in the midst of you they mistreated the orphan and widow.

¹² They take a bribe among* you in order to shed blood; and you take usury, and you make gain from your neighbors by extortion, and so you have forgotten me, _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

¹ Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who live on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the powerless, who crush the poor, who say to their husbands, "Bring something so that we may drink!"

¹ And I said, "Listen, O heads of Jacob and leaders of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice? ² Those of you who are haters of good and lovers of evil, who tear their skin from them and their flesh from their bones, ³ and who eat the flesh of my people, and strip their skin from them, and break their bones, and chop them like meat in the pot, and like flesh in the midst of a cooking pot."

¹¹ Its rulers judge for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money. But they lean on Yahweh, saying, "Is not Yahweh in our midst? Disaster will not come upon us."

³ Their hands are upon evil, to do it well; the official and the judge ask for the bribe, and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul; and they weave it together. ⁴ The best of them is like a brier; the most upright worse than a thorn hedge. The day of your watchman, your punishment, has come; now their confusion will come. ⁵ Do not put faith in a friend; put no trust in a close friend. Guard the doorways of your mouth from the one who lies in your lap. ⁶ For a son treats a father with contempt; a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; the enemies of a man are the men of his own house.

⁹ "Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'Judge with trustworthy justice, and show* steadfast love and compassion _⌊to one another_⌋.* ¹⁰ You must not oppress the widow, the orphan, the foreigner, and the needy. You must not devise evil in your heart _⌊against one another_⌋.'* ¹¹ But they refused to listen, and turned* a stubborn shoulder and _⌊stopped their ears from listening_⌋.*

⁵ "Then I will approach you for judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers, and against those who swear _⌊falsely_⌋,* and against the oppressors of the hired worker with his wages, the widow and the orphan, and _⌊the abusers of_⌋* the alien,* and yet do not fear me," says Yahweh of hosts.

⁶⁷ Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists, and they slapped him,*

²⁸ And they stripped him and* put a scarlet military cloak around him, ²⁹ and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it* on his head, and put* a reed in his right hand. And kneeling down before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" ³⁰ And they spat on him and* took the reed and repeatedly struck* him* on his head.

⁶⁵ And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him with their fists, and to say to him "Prophesy!" And the officers received him with slaps in the face.*

⁶⁴ and after* blindfolding him they repeatedly asked* him,* saying, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?"

⁶ But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich exploiting you and they themselves dragging you into the courts?

⁴ Behold, the wages that were held back by you from the workers who reap your fields cry out, and the cries of the reapers have come to the ears of the Lord of hosts.

⁶ And they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our commander, so that we may make war against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋."* ⁷ Jephthah said to the elders, "Did you not shun me and drive me out from the house of my father? Why do you come to me now when you have trouble?" ⁸ And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "That being so, we have now returned to you, that you may go with us _⌊to fight_⌋* against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and become for us as head of all the inhabitants of Gilead."

¹ And seven women shall grasp at one man on that day, saying, "We will eat our own bread, and we will wear our own clothing; only _⌊let us be called by your name_⌋!* Take away our disgrace!"

¹⁵ Then Jesus, because he* knew that they were about to come and seize him in order to make him* king, withdrew again up the mountain by himself alone.

²² And Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to Yahweh, God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,

⁴⁰ For indeed I lift up my hand to heaven, And I promise _⌊as I live forever_⌋,*

¹² And they shall rebuild ancient ruins from you; you shall erect the foundations of _⌊many generations,_⌋* and _⌊you shall be called_⌋* the bricklayer of the breach, the restorer of paths to live in.

¹⁹ Have you completely rejected Judah? Or has your soul* loathed Zion? Why have you struck us so that there is no healing for us? We hope for peace, but there is no good, and for a time of healing, but look, there is terror.

¹³ What can I say for you? What can I compare to you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you so that I can comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your destruction is as vast as the sea; who can heal you?

⁴ The weak you have not strengthened, and the sick you have not healed, and _⌊with respect to_⌋* the hurt* you have not bound them up, and you have not brought back the scattered, and you have not sought the lost, but rather you ruled over them with force* and with ruthlessness.

¹³ And when Ephraim saw his illness, and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria, he sent to the great king.* But he was unable to cure you and heal your wound.

¹ Come, let us return to Yahweh; because it is he who has torn, and he will heal us; he has struck us down and will bind us up.

⁵ And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven ⁶ and swore by the one who lives _⌊forever and ever_⌋*, who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, "There will be no more delay!

⁵ Then Yahweh his God gave him into the hand of the king of Aram* who defeated him and captured many captives from him and brought them to Damascus. Moreover, he was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, and he defeated him by a great attack. ⁶ And Pekah, the son of Remaliah, killed in one day one hundred and twenty thousand in Judah, all men of strength, because they forsook Yahweh the God of their ancestors.* ⁷ And Zikri, a mighty warrior of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the son of the king, Azrikam the commander of the house, and Elkanah the second to the king.

¹⁸ And the Philistines sent raids into the cities of the Shephelah and the Negeb of Judah. And they captured Beth-Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Socoh with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages. And they settled there.

⁶ And he himself burned his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom. And he practiced sorcery and divination, and he engaged in witchcraft and dealt with mediums and spiritists. And he did much evil in the eyes of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger. ⁷ And he placed the carved image of the idol that he had made in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever.

¹¹ So Yahweh brought the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria upon them, and they took Manasseh captive with hooks, and they bound him with bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon.

¹⁷ Therefore he brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, and he killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He showed no mercy on a young man, a virgin, the elderly, or decrepit. He delivered all into his hand. ¹⁸ And all the vessels of the house of God, the great and the small, the storehouses of the house of Yahweh, and the storehouses of the king and his princes, these all he brought to Babylon. ¹⁹ And they burned the house of God. And they shattered the walls of Jerusalem and burned its citadels with fire and destroyed all the vessels of its treasuries.

⁸ They mock and speak maliciously of oppression; they speak as though from on high. ⁹ They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue roams the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore his people turn there,* and abundant waters are slurped up by them. ¹¹ And they say, "How does God know?" and, "Does the Most High have knowledge?"

⁷ Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire; As for your land, aliens are devouring it in your presence, and it is desolate, like devastation by foreigners.

¹⁸ Ah! Those who drag iniquity along with the cords of falsehood and sin as with rope of the cart, ¹⁹ those who say, "Let him make haste; let him hurry his work so that we may see it and let it draw near and let the plan of the holy one of Israel come so that we may know it!"

¹⁷ Therefore the Lord did not rejoice over its young men, and he did not have compassion on its orphans and widows, for everyone was godless and an evildoer, and every mouth was speaking folly. In all of this his anger did not turn away, and still his hand is stretched out.

⁴ At whom do you make fun? At whom do you _⌊open_⌋* your mouth and _⌊stick out_⌋* your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, offspring of deception,

³ the people _⌊who provoke_⌋* me to anger continually to my face, slaughtering for sacrifices in the garden, and making smoke offerings on bricks, ⁴ _⌊who sit_⌋* in graves and spend the night in _⌊secret places_⌋,* _⌊who eat_⌋* the flesh of swine with* a fragment* of impurity in their vessels, ⁵ _⌊who say_⌋,* "_⌊Keep to yourself_⌋!* You must not come near me, for I am too holy for you!" These are a smoke in my _⌊nostrils_⌋,* a fire burning all day.

⁶ then I will make this house like Shiloh, and this city I will make a curse for all the nations of the earth.'" '"

¹⁸ "Micah the Morashtite was prophesying in the days of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, and he said to all the people of Judah, _⌊saying_⌋:*
'Thus says Yahweh of hosts, "Zion will be plowed, and Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the _⌊temple_⌋* as high places of wood." '

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! ¹⁷ Because of this, our heart has become faint, because of these, our eyes have become dim.

⁴ And look! There was the glory of the God of Israel like the vision that I saw in the valley. ⁵ And he said to me, "Son of man,* lift up now* your eyes _⌊toward the north_⌋."* And I lifted up my eyes _⌊toward the north_⌋,* and, look, there was to the north of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy at the entrance. ⁶ And he said to me, "Son of man,* "_⌊Do you see_⌋* what they are doing—great detestable things that the house of Israel is committing* here so as to drive me from* my sanctuary, and yet _⌊you will see again_⌋* greater* detestable things."

¹⁷ And he said to me, "Have you seen, son of man?* _⌊Was it too small a thing_⌋* for the house of Judah _⌊to do_⌋* the detestable things that they did here? For they filled up the land with violence, and _⌊they provoked me to anger again_⌋,* and look! They are putting the branch to their nose. ¹⁸ And so I will act in rage, and my eye will not take pity, and I will not have compassion, and they will cry in my ear with a loud voice, and I will not hear them."

⁹ And he said to me, "The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is _⌊exceedingly_⌋* great, and the land is filled with bloodguilt, and the city is full of injustice. For they say Yahweh abandoned the land, and _⌊Yahweh does not see_⌋.*

¹⁶ They turn, not to the Most High,* like a slack bow; their officials will fall by the sword because of the anger of their tongue. This is their scorn* in the land of Egypt.

¹² Therefore on account of you Zion will be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem will be a heap of rubble, and _⌊the temple mount_⌋* as a high place in a forest.

¹³ Your eyes are too pure to see evil, and you are not able to look at wrongdoing.* Why do you look at the treacherous? Why are you silent when the wicked swallows up someone more righteous than him?

¹³ "Your words have been harsh* against me," says Yahweh. "But you say, 'How have we spoken together against you?' ¹⁴ You have said, 'It is useless* to serve God! What is the gain if we keep* his requirements, and if we walk as mourners _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh of hosts? ¹⁵ And now we are calling the arrogant blessed! Not only do those who do wickedness prosper; they also test God and they escape!'"

³⁶ But I tell you that every worthless word that they speak, people will give an account for it on the day of judgment! ³⁷ For by your words you will be vindicated, and by your words you will be condemned."

²² Or are we attempting to provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than he is, are we?*

¹⁵ to execute judgment against all, and to convict all the ungodly* concerning all their ungodly deeds that they have committed in an ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

¹³ Now the men of Sodom _⌊were extremely wicked sinners against Yahweh_⌋.*

²⁰ Then Yahweh said, "Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very _⌊serious_⌋,* ²¹ I will go down and I will see. Have they done altogether according to its cry of distress which has come to me? If not, I will know."

⁵ And they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we may know* them." ⁶ But Lot went out to them at the entrance, and he shut the door behind him. ⁷ And he said, "No, my brothers, please do not do such a wrong thing. ⁸ Behold, I have two daughters who have not known* a man. Please, let me bring them out to you; then do to them as it seems good in your eyes. Only to these men do not do this thing, since they came under_⌊ my roof_⌋* for protection." ⁹ But they said, "Step aside!" Then they said, "_⌊This fellow_⌋* came to dwell as a foreigner and he acts as a judge! Now we shall do worse to you than them!" And they pressed very hard against the man, against Lot, and they drew near to break the door.

³² Then Samuel said, "Bring Agag the king of Amalek out to me!" Agag came to him confidently,* for Agag thought, "Surely the bitterness of death _⌊is over_⌋."*

³⁰ When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it, so she painted her eyes with black eye paint and adorned her head and looked through the window.

⁴ _⌊With bald-faced pride_⌋* the wicked will not seek God. There is no God in any of his thoughts.

⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace; an outfit of violence covers them. ⁷ Their eye bulges from fat.* Imaginings overflow their heart.

³⁶ But he who misses me injures himself.* All those who hate me love death."

¹³ There is a generation—how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids they will lift.

¹⁶ And Yahweh said: "Because* the daughters of Zion are haughty, and they walk with outstretched neck, and they give flirting glances with their eyes, _⌊mincing along as they go_⌋,* and _⌊with their feet they rattle their bangles_⌋,*

³ Therefore rain showers have been withheld, and the spring rain has not come. Yet _⌊you have_⌋* the forehead of a woman prostitute, you refuse to be ashamed.

¹⁵ Have they acted ashamed, for they have committed a detestable thing? Not at all, nor were they ashamed; they did not know to feel humiliated. _⌊Therefore_⌋* they will fall among those who fall at the time I punish them, they will stumble," says Yahweh.

¹⁶ "Concerning the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Yahweh, we are not going to listen to you! ¹⁷ But certainly we will do _⌊everything_⌋* that went out from our mouths,* to make smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out to her libations just as we did, we, and our ancestors,* our kings, and our officials, in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, for then _⌊we had enough to eat_⌋,* and we were well-off, and we did not see disaster.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned!

¹⁶ And she lusted for them _⌊when her eyes saw them_⌋,* and she sent messengers to them at Chaldea.

²⁰ and concerning the horns that were on its head, and concerning the other horn that came up and _⌊before which three horns fell_⌋,* and this horn _⌊had eyes_⌋* and a mouth speaking _⌊boastfully_⌋,* and its appearance was larger than its companions.

⁹ I will destroy you,* O Israel; who will help you?*

²³ For the compensation due sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹ "And it will happen that if you indeed listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, _⌊to diligently observe_⌋* all his commandments that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* then Yahweh your God will set you above all the nations of the earth. ² And all of these blessings shall come upon you, and _⌊they shall have an effect on you_⌋* if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God: ³ "You will be blessed in the city, and you will be blessed in the field. ⁴ "Blessed will be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your livestock, _⌊the calf of your cattle and the lambs of your flock_⌋.* ⁵ "Blessed will be your basket and your kneading trough. ⁶ "Blessed will you be _⌊when you come in and blessed will you be when you go out_⌋.* ⁷ "Yahweh will cause your enemies _⌊who rise up against you to be defeated before you_⌋;* on one road* they shall come out against you, but on seven roads* they shall flee _⌊before you_⌋.* ⁸ Yahweh will command _⌊concerning you_⌋* the blessing to be in your barns and _⌊in all your endeavors_⌋;* and he will bless you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you. ⁹ Yahweh will establish you for _⌊himself_⌋* as a holy people as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of Yahweh your God and you walk in his ways. ¹⁰ And all of the peoples of the earth shall see that _⌊by the name of Yahweh you are called_⌋,* and _⌊they shall fear you_⌋.* ¹¹ And _⌊Yahweh will make you successful and prosperous_⌋,* in the fruit of your womb and on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors* to give to you. ¹² Yahweh shall open for you his _⌊rich_⌋* storehouse, even the heavens, to give the rain for* your land in its time and to bless all of the work of your hand, and you will lend to many nations; you will not borrow from them. ¹³ And Yahweh shall make you* as head and not the tail, and you shall be only at the top of the nations, and you shall not be at the bottom, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋* _⌊and diligently observe them_⌋.* ¹⁴ And you shall not turn aside from _⌊any of_⌋* the words that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋* to the right or left by going after other gods to serve them.

²³ and I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt. ²⁴ Therefore Yahweh has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

¹ A song of ascents.*
Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh, who walks in his ways. ² You will indeed eat of the labor of your hands; you will be happy and it will be well with you.

¹² Although the sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I also know that it will be good for those who fear God—because they fear _⌊his presence_⌋.*

²⁰ Go, my people, enter into your chambers and shut your doors* behind you; hide for _⌊a very little_⌋* while, until the wrath has passed over. ²¹ For look! Yahweh is about to come out from his place to punish the iniquity of the inhabitants* of the earth against him, and the earth will disclose her blood and will no longer cover her slain.

¹¹ Yahweh said,
"_⌊Surely_⌋* I will set you free _⌊to be good_⌋* for you, _⌊surely_⌋* I will cause the enemy to intercede with you in a time of trouble, and in a time of distress.

⁴ And Yahweh said to him, "Go through in the midst of the city, in the midst of Jerusalem, and you must place a mark on the foreheads of the men _⌊who are groaning and lamenting_⌋* about all of the detestable things _⌊that are being done_⌋* in the midst of her."

⁹ and in my statutes he goes about and my regulations he keeps,* _⌊performing faithfully_⌋* —then he is righteous, and certainly he will live," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh. ¹⁰ "And now he has a son, a violent one, _⌊who sheds blood_⌋* _⌊and does any of these things_⌋* ¹¹ (though* he* did not do all of these things), for the son also* eats on the mountains and he defiles the wife of his neighbor. ¹² He oppresses the needy and the poor, and _⌊he commits robbery_⌋,* and he does not return a pledge for a loan, and he lifts his eyes to the idols so he does a detestable thing. ¹³ _⌊He charges interest_⌋* and takes usury. Then, shall he live? He shall not live, for he did all of these detestable things. Surely he will die! His blood will be on him. ¹⁴ "And look! He has a son, and he sees all of the sin of his father that he did, and he sees it, but he does not do it. ¹⁵ On the mountains he does not eat, and he does not lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, and the wife of his neighbor he does not defile. ¹⁶ And he oppresses no one; he requires no pledge for a loan, and _⌊he does not commit robbery_⌋;* he gives his bread to the hungry, and he covers the naked person with a garment. ¹⁷ He brings back* his hand from iniquity;* he does not take interest and usury; he does my regulations; he goes* in my statutes. He will not die because of the guilt of his father; he will surely live! ¹⁸ Because his father _⌊oppressed severely_⌋;* _⌊he stole from his brother_⌋;* that which is not good he did in the midst of his people, and look! He will die through* his guilt. ¹⁹ "Yet* you say, 'Why does the son not bear the guilt of the father?' And since the son does justice and righteousness and he keeps all of my statutes and does them, he shall surely live!

³ Seek Yahweh, all you afflicted of the land who have fulfilled his law; seek righteousness; seek humility. Perhaps you will be concealed on the day of the anger of Yahweh.

¹⁸ You will return and see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve him.

⁵ But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God, ⁶ who will reward each one according to his works: ⁷ to those who, by perseverance in good work, seek glory and honor and immortality, eternal life, ⁸ but to those who act from selfish ambition and who disobey the truth, but who obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. ⁹ There will be affliction and distress for every _⌊human being_⌋* who does evil, of the Jew first and of the Greek, ¹⁰ but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and to the Greek. ¹¹ For there is no partiality with God.

⁷ Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked, for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap, ⁸ because the one who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

¹⁰ For God is not unjust, so as to forget your work and the love which you demonstrated for his name by* having served the saints, and continuing to serve them.

¹⁵ "_⌊And then_⌋* if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God _⌊by diligently observing_⌋* all of his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* then all of these curses shall come upon you, and they shall overtake you: ¹⁶ "You shall* be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field. ¹⁷ "Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ "You shall be cursed _⌊when you come in_⌋,* and you shall be cursed _⌊when you go out_⌋.* ²⁰ "Yahweh will send upon you* the curse,* the panic,* and the threat* _⌊in everything that you undertake_⌋,* _⌊until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* the evil of your deeds in that* you have forsaken me. ²¹ Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you _⌊until it consumes you_⌋* from the land that you are going to,* to take possession of it. ²² Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword* and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you _⌊until you perish_⌋.* ²³ And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. ²⁴ Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋.* ²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be _⌊anyone to frighten them away_⌋.* ²⁷ "Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with _⌊the skin rash that cannot be healed_⌋.* ²⁸ Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. ²⁹ And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed _⌊all the time_⌋,* and there will not be _⌊anyone who will rescue you_⌋. * ³⁰ You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep* with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. ³¹ Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right _⌊before you_⌋,* and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and _⌊there shall not be anyone who rescues you_⌋.* ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and _⌊you will be looking on_⌋* _⌊longingly_⌋* for* them all day, _⌊but you will be powerless to do anything_⌋.* ³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.* ³⁴ You shall become mad _⌊because of what your eyes shall see_⌋.* ³⁵ Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which _⌊you will not be able to be healed_⌋,* from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. ³⁶ Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors* have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there. ³⁸ "You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. ³⁹ You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress* them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.* ⁴⁰ There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives* shall drop off. ⁴¹ You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be _⌊yours_⌋,* for they shall go into captivity. ⁴² The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. ⁴³ The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail. ⁴⁵ "And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* because _⌊you did not listen_⌋* to the voice of Yahweh your God, _⌊by observing_⌋* his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. ⁴⁶ And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring _⌊forever_⌋.* ⁴⁷ "_⌊Because_⌋* of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, ⁴⁸ then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place* a yoke of iron on your neck _⌊until he has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁴⁹ Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, _⌊a nation whose language you will not understand_⌋,* ⁵⁰ _⌊a grim-faced nation_⌋* _⌊who does not show respect_⌋* to the old and the young and does not show pity. ⁵¹ And it* shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, _⌊calves of your herds_⌋,* and _⌊lambs of_⌋* your flock _⌊until it has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁵² And it shall besiege you in all your towns _⌊until your high and fortified walls fall_⌋,* which you are trusting in* _⌊throughout your land_⌋;* and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. ⁵³ And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁴ The most refined and the very sensitive* man among you _⌊shall be mean with his brother_⌋* and _⌊against his beloved wife_⌋* and against the rest* of his children that he has left over, ⁵⁵ _⌊by refraining from giving_⌋* to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him _⌊during the siege and distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁶ The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall* not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, _⌊shall be mean to her beloved husband_⌋* and against her son and against her daughter, ⁵⁷ and even concerning her afterbirth _⌊that goes out_⌋* from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon her in your _⌊towns_⌋.* ⁵⁸ "If _⌊you do not diligently observe_⌋* all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, ⁵⁹ then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. ⁶⁰ And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which _⌊you were in dread_⌋* _⌊because of them_⌋.* ⁶¹ Also any illness and any plague* that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. ⁶² And you shall remain _⌊only a few people_⌋* in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. ⁶³ _⌊And then_⌋* as Yahweh delighted over you _⌊to make you prosperous_⌋* to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you* and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. ⁶⁴ And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor* your ancestors,* gods of wood and stone. ⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.* ⁶⁶ And _⌊your life shall hang in doubt before you_⌋,* and you shall be startled* night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. ⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, '_⌊If only it was evening_⌋!'* and in the evening you shall say '_⌊If only it was morning_⌋!'* because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. ⁶⁸ And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I _⌊promised_⌋* to you that '_⌊You shall not see it again_⌋!'* And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer."

³ And so, he is like a tree planted by streams of water that gives its fruit in its season; its leaf also does not wither. Therefore all that he does prospers. ⁴ Not so the wicked. Instead, they are like the chaff that the wind scatters. ⁵ Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

⁵ Yahweh tests the righteous, but the wicked and the lover of violence his soul hates. ⁶ He will rain coals* on the wicked. Burning sulfur and scorching wind will be the portion of their cup.

⁴ Give to them according to their work, even according to the evil of their deeds. Give to them according to the work of their hands; repay them their rightful due.

¹² And to you belongs loyal love, O Lord, because you will render to each according to his work.

³ What shall be given to you,* and what more shall be done to you, deceitful tongue? ⁴ The sharpened arrows of a warrior, with burning charcoals from broom trees.

³¹ They shall eat from the fruit of their way, and they shall be sated from their own schemes,

¹³ But it will not go well with the wicked, and they will not prolong their days, like the shadow; because there is no fearing _⌊God's presence_⌋.*

²² "There is no peace," says Yahweh, "for the wicked."

²⁰ But* the wicked are like the churning sea, that is not able to keep quiet, and its waters toss up mire and mud. ²¹ There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

¹³ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh:
"Look! My servants shall eat but* you, you shall be hungry. Look! My servants shall drink but* you, you shall be thirsty. Look! My servants shall rejoice but* you, you shall be ashamed. ¹⁴ Look! My servants shall shout _⌊for joy_⌋,* but* you, you shall cry out _⌊for pain_⌋* and howl _⌊for sadness_⌋.* ¹⁵ And you shall leave your name to my chosen ones as a curse, and the Lord Yahweh will kill you, and he will _⌊give_⌋* his servants another name.

²⁰ There will no longer be a nursing infant _⌊who lives only a few_⌋* days, or* an old man who does not fill his days, for the boy will die _⌊a hundred years old_⌋,* and the one who _⌊fails to reach_⌋* _⌊a hundred years_⌋* will be _⌊considered_⌋* accursed.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, in order that each one may receive back the things through the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

¹³ For judgment is merciless to the one who has not practiced mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

²³ "Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, 'You will bless the _⌊Israelites_⌋:* You will say to them: ²⁴ Yahweh will bless you and keep you; ²⁵ Yahweh will make shine his face on you and be gracious to you; ²⁶ Yahweh will lift up his face upon you, and he will give you peace.' ²⁷ And they will put my name on the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and I will bless them."

¹ Now Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, so she prepared to destroy all of the offspring of the royal family.

⁴ And I will make boys their princes, and children shall rule over them.

¹⁵ Elders* and _⌊the respectable_⌋* are the head, and prophets* who teach lies* are the tail. ¹⁶ And the leaders of this people were misleading them, and those who were led were confused.

¹⁴ Therefore hear the word of Yahweh, men of mockery, rulers of these people in Jerusalem: ¹⁵ Because you have said,
"We have _⌊made_⌋* a covenant with death, and we have made an agreement with Sheol.
The overwhelming flood, when it passes through, will not come to us,
for we have made lies* our refuge, and we have hidden ourselves in falsehood."

³¹ The prophets prophesy _⌊falsely_⌋,* and the priests rule _⌊by their own authority_⌋,* and my people love it* so much. But what will you do _⌊when the end comes_⌋?*

¹³ Look! Your troops are like women in your midst. The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire will consume the bars of your gates.

¹⁴ Let* them! They are blind guides of the blind. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."

¹³ "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites!—because you shut the kingdom of heaven before people! For you do not enter, nor permit those wanting to go in* to enter.*

⁵ "Because of the oppression of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the poor, now I will rise up," Yahweh says. "I shall put them in the safety for which they* long."

²² Do not rob the poor because he is poor, and do not crush the afflicted at the gate; ²³ For Yahweh will plead their case and despoil those who despoil them of life.*

¹⁰ Do not remove an ancient boundary marker, and on the fields of orphans do not encroach; ¹¹ For their redeemer is strong, he himself will plead their cause against you.

¹ Hear the word of Yahweh, O children of Israel, for Yahweh has an indictment against the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or loyalty, there is no knowledge of God in the land. ² Swearing and lying, murdering and stealing, and adultery break out,* and bloodshed follows bloodshed.

² Hear, O mountains, the indictment of Yahweh, and you eternal foundations of the earth, for Yahweh has an indictment against his people, and against Israel he contends.

⁴ Does he reprove you because of your reverence or enter into judgment with you?

² They* remove border stones; they seize flocks, and they pasture them. ³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge. ⁴ They thrust the poor off the road; the needy of the earth hide themselves together.* ⁵ "Look, like wild donkeys in the desert they* go out to their labor as searchers for the prey; the wilderness is* _⌊their_⌋* food for the young. ⁶ They reap their* fodder in the field, and they glean in the vineyard of the wicked. ⁷ They spend the night naked, _⌊without_⌋* clothing, and they have no garment in the cold.

⁹ "They* snatch the orphan from the breast, and they take a pledge against the needy.*

²³ Indeed, he has not yet appointed a time for man to go to God in the judgment.

⁴ All who do evil—do they not know, they who eat my people as though they were eating bread? They do not call on Yahweh.

² And do not enter into judgment with your servant, because no one alive is righteous before you.

² mighty warrior and man of war, judge and prophet, and diviner and elder, ³ captain of fifty and the honorable men of rank, and counselor and skillful magicians and skillful enchanter.

⁷ For the vineyard of Yahweh of hosts is the house of Israel, and the man* of Judah is the plantation of his delight. And he waited for justice,* but look! Bloodshed!* For righteousness,* but look! A cry of distress!*

²⁷ Like a cage full of birds,* so their houses are full of fraud. _⌊Therefore_⌋* they have become great, and they have become rich.

² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance.

¹⁰ Is there any longer a man in the house of the wicked treasures of wickedness, and the ephah of scarcity which is accursed?*

³³ "Listen to another parable: There was a man—a master of a house—who planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey.

¹⁴ And the foremen of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* whom Pharaoh's slave drivers had appointed over them, were beaten by men who were saying, "Why have you not completed your portion of brickmaking _⌊as before, both yesterday and today_⌋?"*

⁵ They crush your people, O Yahweh; they oppress your inheritance.

⁴ Look! You fast to quarrel and strife, and to strike with a _⌊wicked fist_⌋.* You shall not fast as you do _⌊today_⌋,* to _⌊make your voice heard_⌋* on the height.

² "_⌊What do you mean by_⌋* quoting this proverb about the land of Israel, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'The fathers, they ate unripe fruit, and the teeth of the child became blunt.'*

⁶ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they sell the righteous for money and the poor for a pair of sandals! ⁷ Those who trample the heads of the powerless into the dust of the ground and turn aside the way of the destitute, a man and his father _⌊have sexual relations with_⌋* the same girl, so that they profane my holy name.

⁴ Hear this, those who trample on the poor and who annihilate the afflicted of the land, ⁵ saying, "When will the new moon be over, so that we can sell grain? And the Sabbath, so that we can open the grain bins, that we can make the ephah small and make the shekel large, and can practice deceit with a set of scales of deceit? ⁶ _⌊That we can_⌋* buy the powerless with silver and the poor for the sake of a pair of sandals, and we can sell the waste of the grain?"

⁶ And the captain* of the ship approached him and said to him, "Why are you _⌊sound asleep_⌋?* Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps your god* will take notice of us and we won't perish!"

¹⁸ Before destruction comes pride, and before a fall, a haughty spirit.*

¹¹ Come out and look, _⌊O maidens of Zion_⌋,* at _⌊King Solomon_⌋,* at the crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding, on the day of the joy of his heart!

⁸ And the daughter of Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard, like a shelter in a cucumber field, like a city that is besieged.*

¹⁸ In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets and the headbands and the crescent necklaces,

⁴ when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the blood of Jerusalem from her midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning.

⁴ The earth dries up, it withers; the world languishes, it withers. The elevated of the people of the earth languish,

⁹ Women who are at ease, rise up; hear my voice! Carefree daughters, listen to my word! ¹⁰ _⌊In a year_⌋* you will tremble, carefree ones,
for the vintage will come to an end; the harvest will not come. ¹¹ Tremble, you who are at ease; tremble, carefree ones; strip, and strip yourself, and gird yourself on your loins,*

⁴⁹ Look! This was the iniquity of Sodom, your sister: Pride, abundance of food, and _⌊prosperous ease_⌋* was to her and to her daughters, and _⌊she did not sustain the needy and the poor_⌋.* ⁵⁰ And they were proud, and they did a detestable thing _⌊before me_⌋,* and I removed them _⌊because_⌋* I saw it.

¹¹ On that day you shall not be humiliated on account of all your deeds by which you have rebelled against me. For then I shall remove from your midst those exulting in your pride, and you shall no longer be haughty in _⌊my holy mountain_⌋.*

⁵ "Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a donkey, and* on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.'"*

²⁸ But turning to them, Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children!

²⁹ "And when a man or a woman _⌊has_⌋* an infection on the head or in the beard, ³⁰ then* the priest shall examine the infection, and _⌊if_⌋* its appearance is deeper than the skin and in it is thin bright red hair, then* the priest shall declare it unclean—it is a diseased area of skin; it is an infectious skin disease of the head or the beard.

²⁷ "Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with _⌊the skin rash that cannot be healed_⌋.*

⁴ so shall the king of Assyria lead the captives* of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old, naked and barefoot, _⌊with bared buttocks_⌋,* the shame of Egypt.

² Take the pair of mill stones and grind flour! Uncover your veil, strip off your skirt, uncover your thigh, pass through the rivers! ³ Your nakedness shall be exposed; indeed, your shame shall become visible. I will take vengeance and I will not _⌊spare_⌋* a person.

²² And if you say in your heart, 'Why have these things happened to me?' Because of the greatness of your iniquity your skirts are uncovered; your heels have endured violence.

³⁶ Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because of the pouring out of your shame and because your nakedness was revealed in your whoring with your lovers, and on account of all of the idols of your detestable things, and according to the blood of your children whom you gave to them, ³⁷ therefore, look! I am gathering all of your lovers _⌊whom you were pleased about_⌋,* and all of whom you loved in addition to all of whom you hated, and I will gather them against you from _⌊everywhere_⌋,* and I will uncover your nakedness to them, and they will see all of your nakedness.

²⁵ And I will direct my zeal against you, and they will deal with you in anger; your nose and your ears they will remove, and _⌊those who are left_⌋,* they will fall by the sword, and they will take your sons and your daughters, and _⌊your remnant_⌋* will be consumed by fire. ²⁶ And they will strip you of your clothes, and they will take _⌊your splendid jewelry_⌋.* ²⁷ And I will put an end to your obscene conduct coming from you and your fornication from the land of Egypt, and you will not lift your eyes to them; and you will not remember Egypt again.' ²⁸ For thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Look! I am giving you into the hand of those you hated, into the hand of those from whom* you turned away. ²⁹ And they will deal with you in hatred, and they will take all of your acquisitions, and they will leave you naked and in bareness; and the nakedness of your fornication and your obscene conduct and your whorings will be exposed.

¹¹ Pass on, you inhabitants of Shaphir, in naked shame. The inhabitants of Zaanan do not come forth; the wailing of Beth-ha-Ezel will take its protection from you.

⁵ "Look! I am against you!" _⌊declares_⌋*Yahweh. "I will strip up your skirts over your face; I will let nations look at your nakedness and your shame.

² And the first went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and there was an evil and painful sore on the people who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

²¹ Zebah and Zalmunna said, "Get up yourself, and strike us, for as is the man, so is his power."* So Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.

¹⁸ And he said, "What is the pledge that I must give to you?" And she said, "your seal, your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." And he gave them to her and went in to her. And she conceived by him.

²⁵ She was brought out, but she sent to her father-in-law saying, "By the man to whom these belong I have conceived." And she said, "Now discern* to whom these belong: the seal and cord and the staff."

²² And they came, the men in addition to the women, all who were willing of heart; they brought brooches and jewelry rings and signet rings and ornaments—every variety of gold object—every man who waved a wave offering of gold for Yahweh,

⁵⁰ So we brought the offering of Yahweh, what each man found, objects of gold, bangles,* bracelets,* rings,* earrings,* and female ornaments,* to make atonement for ourselves _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh."

¹¹ And I adorned you with ornaments,* and I put a bracelet on your arms and a necklace on your neck.

⁴ So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their hands, and the ornamental rings that were in their ears. And Jacob buried them under the oak which was near Shechem.

² And Aaron said to them, "Take off the rings of gold that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring it to me."

²⁸ and the turban of fine linen and the headdresses of the headbands of fine linen and undergarments of the linen cloth, finely twisted,

¹² And I put an ornamental ring on your nose and earrings on your ears and a _⌊beautiful crown_⌋* on your head.

¹³ _⌊I will punish her_⌋* for the days of the Baals, to whom she burns incense, and she decked herself with her ornamental ring and jewelry, and she went after her lovers, and forgot me —a declaration of Yahweh.

⁴⁷ Then I asked her and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' And I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms.

⁴² Then Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his finger and put it on the finger of Joseph. And he clothed him with garments of fine linen, and he put a chain of gold around his neck.

¹² in one day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar.

¹⁴ His arms are _⌊rods_⌋** of gold _⌊engraved with_⌋* jewels; his belly* is polished ivory covered with sapphires.*

²² But his* father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out the best robe and put it* on him, and put a ring on his finger* and sandals on his* feet!

⁹ Likewise also the women should adorn themselves in appropriate clothing, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold jewelry or pearls or expensive clothing, ¹⁰ but with good deeds which are fitting for women who profess godliness.

² For if someone* enters into your assembly* in fine clothing with a gold ring on his finger, and a poor person in filthy clothing also enters,

³ Let your* adornment not be the external kind, braiding hair and putting on gold jewelry or putting on fine clothing, ⁴ but the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is highly valuable in the sight of God.

⁶⁵ And she said to the servant, "Who is this man walking around in the field to meet us?" And the servant said, "That is my master." And she took her* veil and covered herself.

⁸ And he made the basin of bronze and its stand of bronze from the mirrors of the serving women who served at the entrance of the tent of assembly.

¹⁵ And he said, "Bring the cloak that is on you and _⌊hold it out_⌋."* And she held it out and he measured six measures of barley and put it on her cloak. Then she went into the city.

²⁷ Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen; so also all the Levites who were carrying the ark, the singers, and Kenaniah the chief of the singing. And David wore a linen ephod.

⁷ The sentinels making rounds in the city found me; they beat me, they wounded me; they took my cloak* away from me— _⌊those sentinels on the walls_⌋!*

¹⁰ And I clothed you with beautiful finished cloth, and I put sandals on you of fine leather, and I bound you in fine linen, and I covered you with costly fabric.

¹⁹ "Now a certain man was rich, and dressed in purple cloth and fine linen, feasting sumptuously every day.

⁸ And it has been granted to her that she be dressed in bright, clean fine linen (for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints).

¹⁴ And the armies that are in heaven, dressed in clean, white fine linen, were following him on white horses.

¹⁶ I _⌊in turn_⌋* will do this to you: then* I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed _⌊in vain_⌋,* and your enemies shall eat it.

²² Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword* and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you _⌊until you perish_⌋.*

²⁴ They will become weakened by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter pestilence; and the teeth of wild animals I will send against them, with the poison of the creeping things in the dust;

¹² When the turn came for each girl to go to King Ahasuerus, after the end of twelve months of being under the regulations of the women—for the days of their beauty treatments had to be filled, six months with the oil of myrrh and six months with perfumes and women's cosmetics—

¹⁵ "I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and I have inserted _⌊my pride_⌋* in the dust.

⁹ And you climbed down to the king with oil, and you made your perfumes numerous, and you sent your envoys _⌊far away_⌋,* and you _⌊sent down deep_⌋* to Sheol.

⁸ Because of this gird yourselves with sackcloth,* lament and wail, for _⌊the burning anger_⌋* of Yahweh has not turned back from us.

²⁶ O daughter of my people, gird yourself with sackcloth, and roll about in the ashes in mourning, a mourning ceremony as for an only child. Make for yourself wailing of bitterness, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

³⁷ For on every head is baldness, and every beard is trimmed. On all the hands, slashes, and on the loins, sackcloth.

³ "Wail, Heshbon, for Ai is devastated. Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah, put on sackcloth. Lament and run back and forth among the walls. For Milcom will go into exile, his priests and his officials together.

¹⁰ They sit on the ground, the elders of the daughter of Zion are silent. They cast dust on their head, they have put on sackcloth; the young women of Jerusalem have bowed their head down to the ground.

¹⁸ And they will wear sackcloth, and horror will cover them, and on all of the faces will be shame, and baldness on all of their heads.

³¹ _⌊They will shave themselves bald for your sake_⌋,* and they will dress* themselves in sackcloth, and they will weep* over you with a bitterness of soul* and with bitter wailing.

⁸ Lament like a virgin girded in sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

¹⁰ And I will turn your feasts into mourning and all of your songs into lament, and I will put sackcloth on all loins and baldness on every head. And I will make it like the mourning for an only child, and its end like a bitter day.

¹⁶ Make yourselves bald and cut off your hair for the children of your pleasure. Expand your baldness as the eagle, for they will go into exile away from you.

³ Let your* adornment not be the external kind, braiding hair and putting on gold jewelry or putting on fine clothing,

³ And I will grant authority* to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for one thousand two hundred sixty days, dressed in sackcloth."

⁹ And people were burned up by the great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has the authority over these plagues, and they did not repent to give him glory.

⁹ And the kings of the earth will weep and mourn over her, those who committed sexual immorality and lived sensually with her, when they see the smoke of her burning,

⁹ Now behold, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity on account of this.

²⁰ But if you refuse and you rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword.
For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken."

²² _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh of hosts: "Look, I am about to punish them. The young men will die by the sword. Their sons and their daughters will die by the famine.

¹⁸ If I go out into the field, then look, those slain by the sword. And if I enter the city, then look, the sickness of the famine. For both prophet and priest wander around through the land, _⌊they do not know what is going on_⌋.'"*

²¹ _⌊Therefore_⌋* give their children to the famine, and hand them over to the _⌊power_⌋* of the sword, and let their wives be bereaved and widows, and let their men be killed by death, their young men struck dead by the sword in the battle.

⁷ And I will lay waste the plans* of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will bring them to ruin by the sword _⌊before_⌋* their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life, and I will give their dead bodies* as food to the birds* of heaven and to the animals* of the earth.

⁹ He who stays in this city will die by the sword, or by the famine, or by the plague. And he who goes out and goes over to the Chaldeans who are laying siege to you will live, and his life will be to him as booty.

²¹ They lie in the soil of the streets, young and old; my young women* and young men, they have fallen by the sword; you have slain on the day of _⌊your anger_⌋,* you have slaughtered and not shown mercy.

¹⁰ All the sinners of my people will die by the sword, who say, 'Evil will not overtake or confront us.'

⁸ _⌊So_⌋* he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and he sat in the midst of the ashes.

¹³ Then* they sat with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights, but* no one spoke* a word to him because they saw that _⌊his_⌋* suffering was very great.

¹ Come down and sit on the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon! Sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of Chaldea! For _⌊they shall no longer call_⌋* you tender and delicate.

² "Judah mourns, and her gates languish, they are in mourning on the ground, and the cry of lament of Jerusalem goes up.

⁴ The roads of Zion are mourning because no one comes to the festival. All her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young women are worried, and she herself suffers bitterly.

⁴⁴ And they will raze you to the ground, you and your children within you, and will not leave a stone upon a stone within you, _⌊because_⌋* you did not recognize the time of your visitation."
