¹ Now Pashhur, the son of Immer, the priest who was officer in charge in the temple of Yahweh, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. ² Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Gate of Benjamin, which was by the temple of Yahweh. ³ _⌊And then_⌋* on the next day, when Pashhur brought Jeremiah out from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, "Yahweh will not call your name Pashhur, _⌊but_⌋* Terror From All Around. ⁴ For thus says Yahweh, 'Look, I am making you a terror to yourself and to all your friends, and they will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will be seeing it.* And all Judah I will give into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will deport them to Babylon, and he will strike them with the sword. ⁵ And I will give all the wealth of this city, and all its acquisitions, and all its precious items, and all of the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, and they will seize them, and they will bring them to Babylon. ⁶ And you, Pashhur, and all those who live in your house will go into captivity, and you will go to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you, and all your friends to whom you have prophesied _⌊falsely_⌋.*'" ⁷ You have persuaded me, O Yahweh, and I was persuaded. You have overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long. _⌊Everyone_⌋* is mocking me. ⁸ For _⌊as often as_⌋* I speak, I must cry out violence and destruction. I must shout, for the word of Yahweh has become for me a disgrace and derision all day long. ⁹ But if I say, "I will not mention him and I will no longer speak in his name," then it becomes in my heart like a fire burning, locked up in my bones, and I struggle to contain it,* and I am not able. ¹⁰ For I hear the rumor of many, "Terror is from all around, denounce him,* yes, let us denounce him!" _⌊All my close friends_⌋* are watchers of my stumbling, saying, "perhaps he can be persuaded, and we can prevail over him, and we can take our revenge on him." ¹¹ But Yahweh is with me like a powerful warrior. _⌊Therefore_⌋* my persecutors will stumble and will not prevail. They will be very ashamed, for they will not achieve success. Their _⌊everlasting insult_⌋* will not be forgotten. ¹² Yet, O Yahweh of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the _⌊heart_⌋* and the _⌊mind_⌋,* let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have revealed my legal case. ¹³ Sing to Yahweh, praise Yahweh, for he has delivered the life of the poor from the hand of evildoers. ¹⁴ Cursed be the day on which I was born, let not the day on which my mother gave birth to me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, _⌊saying_⌋,* "A child is born to you, a son!" and he made him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be like the cities that Yahweh demolished without regret, and let him hear a cry for help in the morning, and an alarm at the time of noon. ¹⁷ Because he did not kill me in the womb, so that my mother would have been for me my grave, and her womb would be pregnant forever. ¹⁸ _⌊Why_⌋* did I come out from the womb, to see toil, and sorrow, and to _⌊end my days in shame_⌋?*

¹⁸ Then the commander of the imperial guard took Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the second priest, and three of the threshold keepers.

⁸ And his officials contributed a freewill offering to the people, to the priests, and to the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, commanders of the house of God, gave to the priests two thousand six hundred Passover lambs and three hundred bulls.

³⁷ the descendants* of Immer, one thousand fifty-two; ³⁸ the descendants* of Pashhur, one thousand two hundred and forty-seven;

¹ And while* they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees approached them,

²⁴ Now when both the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed concerning them, as to what this might be.

²⁷ and say, 'Thus says the king: "Put this fellow in the house of imprisonment and feed him reduced rations of food and water until I come in peace." '"

¹⁰ Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in _⌊the prison_⌋,* for he was enraged with him concerning this. And Asa oppressed some of the people at that time.

²¹ Then they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the command of the king in the courtyard of the house of Yahweh.

²⁷ And you* put my feet in the block, and you* watch all my paths; you carve a mark on the soles of my feet.*

¹⁹ And they will fight against you but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "to deliver you."

¹⁴ Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the courtyard of the house of Yahweh and said to all the people, ¹⁵ "Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, 'Look, I am about to bring to this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their neck to not hear my words.'"

⁸ _⌊And then_⌋* as Jeremiah finished speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You will die!

²⁶ "Yahweh made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, so that there are overseers in the house of Yahweh over any mad man who exhibits the behavior of a prophet, and you must put him into the stocks and into the neck iron,

²⁶ And the king commanded Jerahmeel, the son of the king, and Seraiah, the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, the son of Abdeel, to arrest Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but Yahweh hid them.

¹³ _⌊And when_⌋* he was at the Gate of Benjamin, there was _⌊a sentry on duty_⌋* whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"

¹⁵ And the officials were angry at Jeremiah and they struck him. And they put him in _⌊prison_⌋,* in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for they had converted it to the _⌊prison_⌋*. ¹⁶ So Jeremiah came to the _⌊dungeon_⌋*, even to the vaulted cells, and Jeremiah stayed there many days.

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit* of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit* there was no water,* _⌊but only_⌋* mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud. ⁷ When Ebed-melech the Cushite, _⌊a eunuch_⌋* who was in the house of the king, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the pit*—now the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin—

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam the king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to endure all of his words. ¹¹ For this Amos has said, 'Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go into exile away from his land.'" ¹² And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee to the land of Judah and earn food there and prophesy there!" ¹³ But do not prophesy again at Bethel, because this is a sanctuary of a king and this is a temple of a kingdom."

¹⁰ All the land will be transformed into a desert plateau* from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But it* will rise up high and it will stay* in its place from the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, up to the Corner Gate and from the Tower of Hananel to the king's winepresses.

¹⁰ Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹ Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things against you, lying on account of me. ¹² Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.

³⁵ And the tenant farmers seized his slaves, one of whom they beat, and one of whom they killed, and one of whom they stoned.

³⁴ For this reason, behold, I am sending to you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and will pursue from town to town, ³⁵ so that upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of righteous Abel up to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation! ³⁷ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together _⌊the way_⌋* a hen gathers her young together under her* wings, and you were not willing!

³ And they laid hands on them and put them* in custody until the next day, because it was already evening.

¹⁸ And they laid hands on the apostles and put them in the public prison.

⁴⁰ And they summoned the apostles, beat them,* commanded them* not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.*

⁵² Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand about the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become,

²² And the crowd joined in attacking them, and the chief magistrates tore off their clothing and* gave orders to beat them* with rods. ²³ And after they* had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them* into prison, giving orders to the jailer to guard them securely. ²⁴ Having received such an order, _⌊he_⌋* put them in the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.*

³⁶ And others _⌊experienced mocking and flogging_⌋*, and in addition bonds and imprisonment. ³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they died by murder with a sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins, impoverished, afflicted, mistreated,

¹⁰ Do not be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and you will experience affliction ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

⁶ And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses to Jesus.
And _⌊I was greatly astonished when I saw her_⌋*.

⁵ Your name shall no longer be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.

¹⁵ And God said to Abraham, "as for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, for Sarah shall be her name.

²⁸ And he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel,* for you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed."

¹³ For I hear the rumor of many, "Terror on every side!" When conspiring together against me, they have plotted to take my life.

³ And I approached the prophetess, and she conceived, and she gave birth to a son. And Yahweh said to me, "Call his name Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz.

²⁵ You must not go out into the field, and you must not walk on the road, for _⌊the enemy has a sword_⌋,* terror is all around.

³² Therefore look, days are about to come," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and it will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of the Slaughter, and they will bury in Topheth _⌊until there is no more place_⌋.*

² and go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, which is at the entrance of the Gate of the Potsherd, and proclaim there the words that I speak to you.

⁶ "_⌊Therefore_⌋* look, days are about to come," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, _⌊but_⌋* the Valley of the Slaughter.

¹⁰ For I hear the rumor of many, "Terror is from all around, denounce him,* yes, let us denounce him!" _⌊All my close friends_⌋* are watchers of my stumbling, saying, "perhaps he can be persuaded, and we can prevail over him, and we can take our revenge on him."

²⁹ And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the _⌊hearing_⌋* of Jeremiah the prophet.

⁵ Why do I see them terrified? They are turning back and their warriors are beaten down. And they have fled to a place of refuge and they do not turn back. Terror is from all around," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

²² You have summoned my horror from all around, as if for a feast day; no one on the day of Yahweh's anger is a fugitive and a survivor; whoever I have cared for and reared, my enemy has destroyed.

⁴ And Yahweh said to him, "_⌊Name him_⌋* Jezreel;* because in a little while _⌊I will punish_⌋* the house of Jehu* for the blood* of Jezreel,* and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.* ⁵ _⌊On that day_⌋* I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel." ⁶ And she conceived again and bore a daughter, and he* said to him,
"_⌊Name her_⌋* Lo-ruhamah,* for I will no longer have pity on the house of Israel or _⌊forgive them_⌋.* ⁷ But I will have pity on the house of Judah and I will save them by Yahweh their God, and will not deliver them by bow, sword, war, horses, or horsemen. ⁸ And when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah,* she conceived and bore a son. ⁹ And he* said, "_⌊Name him_⌋* Lo-ammi,* for you are not my people and I am not your God.*

⁵ And it happened that on the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes came together in Jerusalem, ⁶ and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all those who were from the high priest's family. ⁷ And they made them stand in their* midst and* began to ask,* "By what power or by what name did you do this?"

³⁰ And he brought them outside and* said, "Sirs, what must I do so that I can be saved?"

³⁵ And when it* was day, the chief magistrates sent the police officers, saying, "Release those men." ³⁶ And the jailer reported these words to Paul: "The chief magistrates have sent an order* that you should be released. So come out now and* go in peace!" ³⁷ But Paul said to them, "They beat us in public without due process—men who are Roman citizens—and* threw us* into prison, and now they are wanting to release us secretly? Certainly not! Rather let them come themselves and* bring us out!" ³⁸ So the police officers reported these words to the chief magistrates, and they were afraid when they* heard that they were Roman citizens. ³⁹ And they came and* apologized to* them, and after they* brought them* out they asked them* to depart from the city.

³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and _⌊you will be looking on_⌋* _⌊longingly_⌋* for* them all day, _⌊but you will be powerless to do anything_⌋.* ³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.* ³⁴ You shall become mad _⌊because of what your eyes shall see_⌋.*

⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.* ⁶⁶ And _⌊your life shall hang in doubt before you_⌋,* and you shall be startled* night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. ⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, '_⌊If only it was evening_⌋!'* and in the evening you shall say '_⌊If only it was morning_⌋!'* because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see.

³³ The only one I will not cut off from my altar is you.* Rather, to cause your eyes to fail and to cause your soul to grieve, _⌊all the members of your household_⌋* will die as men.*

⁷ They slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes; then they blinded the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon.

¹¹ "Sudden terrors terrify him all around, and they chase him at his heels. ¹² His wealth will become hunger, and disaster is ready for his stumbling. ¹³ It consumes parts of his skin; the firstborn of death consumes his limbs. ¹⁴ He is torn from his tent _⌊in which he trusted_⌋,* and it brought him to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ "_⌊Nothing_⌋* remains for him in his tent; sulfur is scattered upon his dwelling place. ¹⁶ His roots dry up _⌊below_⌋,* and its branches* wither away above.* ¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street. ¹⁸ "They thrust him from light into darkness, and they drive him out from the world. ¹⁹ There is no offspring for him nor* a descendant among his people, and there is not a survivor in his abode. ²⁰ Those of the west are appalled over _⌊his fate_⌋,* and those of the east _⌊are seized with horror_⌋.* ²¹ Surely these are the dwellings of the godless, and this is the dwelling place of him who knows not God."

²³ _⌊When his stomach fills up_⌋,* God will send _⌊his burning anger_⌋* upon him, and he will let it rain down upon him* as his food. ²⁴ "He will flee from an iron weapon, but an arrow of bronze will pierce him. ²⁵ He draws it forth, and it comes out from his body, and the glittering point comes from his gall-bladder; terrors come upon him. ²⁶ _⌊Total darkness_⌋* is hidden for his treasures;* _⌊an unfanned fire_⌋* will devour him; the remnant* _⌊will be consumed_⌋* in his tent.

¹⁹ How they become a desolation in a moment! They come to a complete end by terrors.

¹⁵ "Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, 'Look, I am about to bring to this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their neck to not hear my words.'"

⁴ 'Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: "Look, I am about to turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands,* with which you are fighting against them, the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are laying siege to you from outside the wall, and I will gather them into the center of this city. ⁵ And I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand, and with strong arm, and in _⌊anger_⌋,* and in fury, and in great wrath. ⁶ And I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both humankind and animal; by a great plague they will die. ⁷ And _⌊afterward_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "I will give Zedekiah, the king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and those who remain in this city from the plague, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their lives, and he will strike them with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword. He will not take pity on them, and he will not have compassion, nor will he show compassion." ' ⁸ "And to this people you shall say, 'Thus says Yahweh, "Look, I am setting _⌊before you_⌋* the way of life and the way of death. ⁹ He who stays in this city will die by the sword, or by the famine, or by the plague. And he who goes out and goes over to the Chaldeans who are laying siege to you will live, and his life will be to him as booty. ¹⁰ For I have set my face against this city for evil and not for good," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire." '

⁹ look, I am going to send and take all the clans* of the north,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'and I will send* to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations all around, and I will destroy them, and I will make them a horror, and an object of hissing, and _⌊everlasting ruins_⌋.*

²¹ Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab, the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah, the son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying to you in my name a lie, 'Look, I am going to give them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and he will strike them before your eyes.

²⁷ "Look, I am Yahweh, the God of all flesh; is _⌊anything_⌋* too difficult for me?" ²⁸ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh: "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. ²⁹ And the Chaldeans, who are fighting against this city, will come and set this city on fire, and they will burn it, and the houses where they have made smoke offerings on their roofs to Baal, and where they have devoted libations to other gods, in order to provoke me to anger. ³⁰ For the people* of Israel and the people* of Judah were doing only evil in my eyes from their youth, for the people* of Israel were only provoking me to anger by the work of their hands," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ³¹ "For this city has been for me a cause of my anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even until this day, so I will remove it from my _⌊sight_⌋,*

⁶ And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah at Riblah before his eyes. The king of Babylon also slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. ⁷ Then he blinded the eyes of Zedekiah and tied him up with bronze fetters to bring him to Babylon.

²⁷ And the king of Babylon struck them down and killed them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah left from its land.

¹⁷ And they will raise a lament over you, and they will say to you,
'How you have been lost who was inhabited from* the seas; the city that was praised, that was strong. It is located on the sea, and its inhabitants imposed their terror _⌊on all of its inhabitants_⌋.* ¹⁸ Now the coastlands will tremble at the day of your downfall, and the islands that are in the sea will be horrified because of your departure.'" ¹⁹ For thus says the Lord Yahweh: "When I make you a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited, when bringing up over you the deep, the _⌊great surging waters_⌋* will cover you. ²⁰ And I will bring you down with those who are going down to the grave,* _⌊an ancient people_⌋,* and I will cause you to dwell in the world* of the depths, in the ruins from of old with those who are going down to the grave,* so that you will not be inhabited and _⌊have a place_⌋* in the land of the living. ²¹ Sudden terrors I will bring on you, and you shall no longer exist; and you will be sought, and you will not be found again _⌊forever_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

⁴ saying, "I have sinned by* betraying innocent blood!" But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"* ⁵ And throwing the silver coins into the temple he departed. And he went away and* hanged himself.

¹⁷ 'Look, days are coming when all that is in your palace will be carried off; even all that your ancestors* have stored up until this day, to Babylon; nothing shall be left,' says Yahweh. ¹⁸ 'Your sons who went out from you, whom you brought forth, will be taken, and they shall be eunuchs in the temple of the king of Babylon.'"

¹² Jehoiachin king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, his mother, his servants, his commanders, and his court officials. The king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign. ¹³ Then he took from there all of the treasures of the temple of Yahweh and the treasures of the palace of the king. He cut up all of the vessels of gold which Solomon the king of Israel had made in the temple of Yahweh, as Yahweh had foretold. ¹⁴ He deported all of Jerusalem: all of the commanders, ten thousand of the skilled warriors, and the artisans; no one was left over except the poorest of the people of the land. ¹⁵ He deported Jehoiachin to Babylon; the mother of the king, the wives of the king, his court officials, and the citizenry of the land he caused to go into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: ¹⁶ of all of the skilled men, seven thousand, and of the skilled craftsmen and the artisans, one thousand. All of the mighty warriors _⌊fit for war_⌋* the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.

¹³ The bronze pillars which were in the temple* of Yahweh, the water carts, and the bronze sea that was in the temple of Yahweh, the Chaldeans broke into pieces and carried their bronze to Babylon. ¹⁴ The pots, the shovels, the snuffers, the dishes, and the vessels of bronze with which they served there, they took. ¹⁵ The firepans and the basins, whatever was gold, the commander of the imperial guard took for the gold and whatever was silver, for the silver. ¹⁶ The two pillars, the one sea, and the water cart which Solomon had made for the temple of Yahweh, there was no weighing to the bronze of all of these vessels. ¹⁷ The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits; a bronze capital was on it, with the height of the capital being three cubits. The latticework and pomegranates on the capital all around were bronze, and likewise on the latticework for the second pillar.

¹⁰ And at the turn of the year King Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, with objects of the treasure of the house of Yahweh. And he made Zedekiah his brother king in Judah and Jerusalem.

¹⁷ Therefore he brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, and he killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He showed no mercy on a young man, a virgin, the elderly, or decrepit. He delivered all into his hand. ¹⁸ And all the vessels of the house of God, the great and the small, the storehouses of the house of Yahweh, and the storehouses of the king and his princes, these all he brought to Babylon. ¹⁹ And they burned the house of God. And they shattered the walls of Jerusalem and burned its citadels with fire and destroyed all the vessels of its treasuries.

²⁴ But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our ancestors* from our youth, their flocks, and their cattle, their sons and their daughters.

²⁰ Destruction on destruction is proclaimed, for all of the land is devastated. Suddenly my tents are devastated, my tent curtains in a moment.

¹² Upon all the barren heights in the desert* destroyers have come, for the sword of Yahweh devours, from one end of the land to the other end of the land, there is no peace for all flesh.

¹³ I will give your wealth and your treasures as plunder without price, even because of all your sins, and throughout all your territories.

³ O my mountain in the open country, I will give your wealth, all your treasures, for spoil, your high places, because of your sin, throughout all your territories.

⁸ But like the bad figs that cannot be eaten because of their bad quality—for thus says Yahweh—so I will treat Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his officials, and the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who live in the land of Egypt. ⁹ And I will make them as a terror, an evil to all the kingdoms of the earth, as a disgrace and a proverb, as a taunt and a curse, in all the places where I will drive them. ¹⁰ And I will send among them the sword, the famine, and the plague, until they perish from the land that I gave to them and their ancestors.'"*

¹⁹ For thus says Yahweh of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the stands, and concerning the rest of the vessels that are left in this city, ²⁰ which Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, did not take when he deported Jeconiah, the son of Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, from Jerusalem to Babylon, _⌊along with_⌋* all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem. ²¹ For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that are left in the house of Yahweh, and in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem: ²² 'They will be brought to Babylon, and there they will stay until the day of my attending to them,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. 'Then I will bring them up and restore them to this place.'"

³ where Zedekiah, the king of Judah, had confined him, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Why are you prophesying, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Thus says Yahweh, "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it, ⁴ and Zedekiah, the king of Judah, will not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but surely he will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and _⌊he will speak face to face with him_⌋* and _⌊he will see him eye to eye_⌋,* ⁵ and to Babylon he will bring Zedekiah, and there he will be until my attending to him," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not be successful" '?"

² In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the city was taken by assault.

⁸ And the Chaldeans burned the palace* of the king and the houses* of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

⁷ Then the city was breached, and all _⌊the soldiers_⌋* fled and went out from the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls that are at the garden of the king, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. And they went in the direction of the Jordan Valley.* ⁸ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king and they overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was scattered from him. ⁹ Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and _⌊he passed sentence on him_⌋.* ¹⁰ And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at Riblah. ¹¹ Then he made blind the eyes of Zedekiah, and they tied him up with bronze fetters, and the king of Babylon brought him to Babylon. And he put him in _⌊prison_⌋* until the day of his death. ¹² Now in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard,* who stood _⌊before_⌋* the king of Babylon, entered into Jerusalem. ¹³ And he burned the _⌊temple_⌋* of Yahweh, and the palace* of the king, and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every great house he burned with fire. ¹⁴ And all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard* broke down all the walls of Jerusalem all around. ¹⁵ And Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard* deported some of the poor of the people, and the rest of the people who were left in the city, and the deserters who deserted to the king of Babylon, along with the rest of the craftsmen. ¹⁶ But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard* left some of the poor of the land to serve as vinedressers and farmers. ¹⁷ And the Chaldeans broke the pillars of bronze that were in the _⌊temple_⌋* of Yahweh, and the kettle stands and the sea of bronze that were in the _⌊temple_⌋* of Yahweh, and they carried all their bronze to Babylon. ¹⁸ And they took with them the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the sprinkling bowls, and the pans, and all the vessels of bronze which were used in temple service. ¹⁹ And the captain of the guard* took the bowls, and the firepans, and the sprinkling bowls, and the pots, and the lampstands, and the pans, and the libation bowls, _⌊those made of solid gold_⌋* and _⌊those made of solid silver_⌋.* ²⁰ The two pillars, the one sea, and the twelve bronze oxen that were under the kettle stands which King Solomon had made for the _⌊temple_⌋* of Yahweh—there was not a weight for the bronze of all these vessels! ²¹ Now the pillars, the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits,* and a thread of twelve cubits* surrounded it, and its thickness was four fingers, hollowed out. ²² And a capital upon it was bronze and the height of the one capital was five cubits, and latticework and pomegranates were on the capital on all sides, all of bronze. And like these was the second pillar with pomegranates. ²³ And there were ninety-six pomegranates _⌊on the sides_⌋;* all the pomegranates on the latticework on all sides were a hundred.

⁷ Jerusalem remembers the days of her misery and wanderings, all her treasures that were from the days of long ago. When her people fell into the hand of the enemy, there was no one helping her; the enemies saw her, they mocked at her destruction.

¹⁰ The enemy has stretched out his hand over all her treasures; for she has seen the nations, they entered her sanctuary, those whom you commanded not to enter in your assembly.

¹² The kings of the earth did not believe, and all the inhabitants of the world, that a foe and an enemy could enter into the gates of Jerusalem.

²⁵ The conspiracy of its prophets in the midst of her is like a roaring lion that is tearing prey. They devour people, and they take wealth and treasure; they make its widows numerous in the midst of her.

² And the Lord gave Jehoiakim the king of Judah into his hand and _⌊some of_⌋* of the utensils of the temple of God,* and he brought them to the land of Shinar to the temple of his gods, and he brought the utensils to _⌊the treasury_⌋* of his gods.

¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but* there shall not be _⌊anybody who is pursuing_⌋* you.

²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth.

¹⁵ Elders* and _⌊the respectable_⌋* are the head, and prophets* who teach lies* are the tail.

³¹ The prophets prophesy _⌊falsely_⌋,* and the priests rule _⌊by their own authority_⌋,* and my people love it* so much. But what will you do _⌊when the end comes_⌋?*

¹³ "For from the smallest of them to the greatest of them, _⌊everyone_⌋* makes profit for unlawful gain. And from the prophet to the priest, _⌊everyone_⌋* practices deceit. ¹⁴ And they have treated the wound of my people lightly, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Peace, peace,' but there is no peace. ¹⁵ Have they acted ashamed, for they have committed a detestable thing? Not at all, nor were they ashamed; they did not know to feel humiliated. _⌊Therefore_⌋* they will fall among those who fall at the time I punish them, they will stumble," says Yahweh.

¹⁰ Therefore I will give their wives to others, their fields to conquerors, because from the smallest to the greatest, all of them make profit for unlawful gain, from prophet to priest, all of them practice deceit. ¹¹ And they have treated the wound of the daughter of my people lightly, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Peace, peace,' but there is no peace.

¹⁴ And Yahweh said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies* in my name. I have not sent them, and I have not commanded them, and I have not spoken to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, and a divination, worthless, and the deceitfulness of their _⌊minds_⌋."* ¹⁵ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who prophecy in my name though I have not sent them, yet they are saying, "Sword and famine will not be in this land." "By the sword and by the famine those prophets will perish.

⁴ For thus says Yahweh, 'Look, I am making you a terror to yourself and to all your friends, and they will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will be seeing it.* And all Judah I will give into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will deport them to Babylon, and he will strike them with the sword.

¹⁴ And in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible. They commit adultery, and they walk in lies,* and they make strong the hands of evildoers, so that they have not turned back each from his wickedness. All of them have become to me like Sodom, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah." ¹⁵ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets,
"Look, I am going to let them eat wormwood and I will give them water of poison to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem went out ungodliness to all the land." ¹⁶ Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
"You must not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They are deluding you with visions of their _⌊mind_⌋,* They do not speak from the mouth of Yahweh. ¹⁷ They are* continually saying to those who disregard the word of Yahweh, 'Peace it will be to you,' and to _⌊each one_⌋* who walks in the stubbornness of his heart they say, 'Calamity will not come upon you.'

²⁵ "I have heard what the prophets who prophesy lies* have said in my name, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'I have dreamed! I have dreamed!' ²⁶ _⌊How long_⌋* will this be in the hearts* of the prophets who prophesy lies,* even the prophets of the deceitfulness of their hearts,*

³² Look, I am against those who prophesy dreams of lies,"* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and tell them, and they caused my people to err through their lies, and in their recklessness, when I myself have not sent them nor commanded them, so they profit not this people at all," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁵ Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, "Please listen, Hananiah, Yahweh has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. ¹⁶ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh, 'Look, I am going to send you from the face of the earth. This year you will die because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.'" ¹⁷ And Hananiah the prophet died in that same year in the seventh month.

²¹ Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab, the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah, the son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying to you in my name a lie, 'Look, I am going to give them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and he will strike them before your eyes. ²² And a curse will be taken up because of them by all the exiles* of Judah who are in Babylon, _⌊saying_⌋,* "May Yahweh make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire,"

³² _⌊therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh, "Look, I am going to punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his offspring. There will not be for him a man who lives in the midst of this people, and he will not see the good that I am going to do to my people," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "For he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh." '"

¹⁴ Your prophets had a vision for you, false and worthless; they have not exposed your sin, to restore your fortune; they have seen oracles for you, false and misleading.

⁴ Your prophets have been like foxes* among ruins. ⁵ You did not go up into* the breaches and repair a wall for the house of Israel to stand firm in the battle on the day of Yahweh. ⁶ They saw falseness and _⌊a lying divination_⌋,* the ones saying, 'Declaration of Yahweh!' and Yahweh did not send them, and they wait _⌊for the confirmation of their word_⌋.* ⁷ Have you not seen _⌊a false vision_⌋* and spoken a _⌊lying divination_⌋,* and you said, 'Declaration of Yahweh!' but _⌊I myself did not speak_⌋.* ⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Because of your speaking falseness and because you envisioned a lie, therefore, look! I am against you!" _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh. ⁹ "And it will be my hand against the prophets who are seeing falseness and who are practicing lying divination. They will not be in the council of my people, and they will not be written down in the record book of the house of Israel, and into* the land of Israel they will not come, and then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh. ¹⁰ Because, yes, because they led my people astray, _⌊saying_⌋* 'Peace!' And there is not peace. And when anyone* builds a flimsy wall, look, they coat it with whitewash. ¹¹ Say to those covering it with whitewash that it will fall; there will be _⌊a torrent of rain_⌋,* and I will give stones of hail; they will fall! * And a _⌊windstorm_⌋* will burst forth! ¹² And look! When the wall falls, will it not be said to you, 'Where is the whitewash with which you covered it?' ¹³ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'And so I will let burst forth a _⌊windstorm_⌋* in my rage, and _⌊there will be a torrent of rain_⌋* in my anger, and hailstones in my rage _⌊for complete destruction_⌋.* ¹⁴ And I will break down the wall that you covered with whitewash, and I will knock it to the ground, and its foundation will be revealed, and it will fall, and you will come to an end in the midst of it, and you will know that I am Yahweh! ¹⁵ And I will fully vent my rage against the wall and against those covering it with whitewash, and I will say to you, "_⌊The wall is no more_⌋,* and _⌊the people covering it are no more_⌋,* ¹⁶ that is, the prophets of Israel, the ones prophesying concerning Jerusalem and the ones seeing visions of peace, and there is not peace!'" " _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

²² Because you disheartened the heart of the righteous by deception, and I have not* caused him pain, and strengthened the hands of the wicked so that he did not turn* from his wicked way to save his life. ²³ Therefore falseness* you will not see,* and divination you will not practice* any longer, and I will rescue my people from your hand, and you will know that I am Yahweh!'"

²⁸ And for them its prophets plaster whitewash; they are seeing falseness and are practicing divination for them by lying, saying, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh,' and Yahweh has not spoken.

¹¹ If a man walks about in a spirit of deception and lies, saying "I will preach to you of wine and strong drink," then he would be a preacher for this people!

³ _⌊And then_⌋,* if anyone prophesies again, his father and his mother who bore him will say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of Yahweh!" And his father and his mother who bore him will pierce him through when he prophesies.

⁸ But Elymas the magician (for his name is translated in this way) opposed them, attempting to turn the proconsul away from the faith. ⁹ But Saul (also called Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him ¹⁰ and* said, "O you who are full of all deceit and of all unscrupulousness, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness! Will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord! ¹¹ And now behold, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, not seeing the sun _⌊for a while_⌋.* And immediately mist and darkness fell over him, and he was going around looking for people* to lead him* by the hand.

¹ But there were also false prophets among the people, as there will be false teachers among you also, who will bring in _⌊destructive heresies_⌋*, even denying the Master who bought them, thus* bringing on themselves swift destruction. ² And many will follow their licentious ways, because of whom the way of truth will be reviled. ³ And in greediness they will exploit you with false words, whose condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

²² And Moses returned to Yahweh and said, "Lord, why have you brought trouble to this people? Why ever did you send me? ²³ And from the time I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble to this people, and you have certainly not delivered your people."

¹¹ And Moses said to Yahweh, "Why have you brought trouble to your servant? Why have I not found favor in your eyes, that the burdens of all these people have been placed on me? ¹² Did I conceive all these people? If I have fathered them,* that you could say to me, 'Carry them* in your lap, just as a foster-father carries the suckling on the land that you swore an oath to their ancestors?'* ¹³ From where do I have meat to give all these people? They weep before me, saying, 'Give us meat and let us eat!' ¹⁴ I am not able to carry all these people along alone; they are too heavy for me. ¹⁵ If this is how you are going to treat me, please kill me immediately if I find favor in your eyes, and do not let me see my misery."

²³ Then he went up from there to Bethel; as he was going up along the way, young boys came out from the city and mocked at him and said to him, "Go up, baldhead; go up, baldhead!"

⁶ But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by humankind and despised by people. ⁷ All who see me mock me. They open wide their lips; they shake the head, saying:

¹⁵ But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered together; smiters whom I did not know gathered against me. They tore and did not cease. ¹⁶ Among the ungodly of the mockers at feasts,* they gnashed at me with their teeth.

⁹ because the zeal for your house* has consumed me, and the reproaches of those reproaching you have fallen on me. ¹⁰ When I wept in the fasting of my soul, it became reproaches for me. ¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became for them a byword. ¹² Those sitting at the gate talk about me as also* the songs of the drunkards.

⁶ Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! Look, I do not know how to speak, for I am a youth."* ⁷ But Yahweh said to me, "You must not say, 'I am a youth,'* for to _⌊whomever_⌋* I send you, you will go, and _⌊whatever_⌋* I command you, you will speak. ⁸ _⌊Do not be afraid of them_⌋,* for I am with you to deliver you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁸ Now look, I have made you _⌊today_⌋* as a fortified city and as an iron pillar and a bronze wall* against all the land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land. ¹⁹ And they will fight against you but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "to deliver you."

¹⁰ Woe to me, O my mother, that you gave birth to me, a man of contention and quarreling _⌊to the whole land_⌋.* I have not lent out and _⌊I have not borrowed_⌋.* All of them are cursing me.

¹⁸ Why is my pain endless, and my wound incurable? It refuses to become healed. Truly you are to me like a deceitful brook, waters that are not trustworthy.

¹⁶ But I, I have not run away from being a shepherd _⌊who follows you_⌋,* and I have not desired the disastrous day. You, you know the pronouncement of my lips, it was before your face.

⁹ But if I say, "I will not mention him and I will no longer speak in his name," then it becomes in my heart like a fire burning, locked up in my bones, and I struggle to contain it,* and I am not able.

¹⁴ I have become a laughingstock for all the people, their mocking song all day long.

¹⁴ And the Spirit lifted me and took me, and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, and the hand of Yahweh was strong on me.

⁷ The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have come; Israel knows! The prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is acting like a madman. Because of the greatness of your sin, your hostility is great.

⁸ But I, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of Yahweh, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his rebellion, and to Israel his sin.

¹⁴ Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him.

⁶³ And the men who were guarding him began to mock* him while* they beat him,* ⁶⁴ and after* blindfolding him they repeatedly asked* him,* saying, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?"

¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers also treated him with contempt, and after* mocking him* and* dressing him* in glistening clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.

³⁵ And the people stood there watching, but the rulers also ridiculed him,* saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if this man is the Christ* of God, the Chosen One!" ³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming up and* offering him sour wine

¹⁸ And even some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him, and some were saying, "What does this babbler want to say?" But others said,* "He appears to be a proclaimer of foreign deities," because he was proclaiming the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

³² Now when they* heard about the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed, but others said, "We will hear you about this again also."

⁹ For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as condemned to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world and to angels and to people. ¹⁰ We are fools for the sake of Christ, but you are prudent in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are dishonored! ¹¹ Until the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty and poorly clothed and roughly treated and homeless, ¹² and we toil, working with our own hands. When we are* reviled, we bless; when we are* persecuted, we endure; ¹³ when we are* slandered, we encourage. We have become like the refuse of the world, the offscouring of all things, until now.

⁶ Or do only I and Barnabas not have the right _⌊to refrain from working_⌋*?

³⁶ And others _⌊experienced mocking and flogging_⌋*, and in addition bonds and imprisonment.

¹⁶ But they were mocking the messengers of God and despising his words and scoffing at his prophets until the wrath of Yahweh rose against his people until there was no remedy.

¹⁹ My bowels, my bowels! I writhe! The walls of my heart! My heart is restless within me, I cannot keep silent, for I hear in my inner self the sound of a horn, the alarm of war. ²⁰ Destruction on destruction is proclaimed, for all of the land is devastated. Suddenly my tents are devastated, my tent curtains in a moment. ²¹ How long must I see the banner, and hear the sound of a horn? ²² "For my people are foolish, they have not known me. They are foolish children, and they do not have insight. They are skillful at doing evil, and they do not know how to do good."

¹ "Roam about through the streets of Jerusalem, and look please, and take note, and search at its public squares, if you can find a person who does justice, who seeks honesty, so that I may forgive it.

⁶ Therefore a lion from the forest will kill them, A wolf from the desert plains* will devastate them. A leopard is watching their cities, everyone who goes out from there will be torn, because their transgressions are many, their apostasies are numerous.

¹⁵ Look, I am about to bring on you a nation from afar, O house of Israel," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "It is an enduring nation, it is _⌊an ancient nation_⌋.* A nation whose language you do not know, and you cannot understand what they speak. ¹⁶ Their quiver is like an open tomb, all of them are warriors. ¹⁷ And they will eat your harvest and your food, they will eat your sons and your daughters, they will eat your flock and your herd, they will eat your vine and your fig tree, they will smash with the sword _⌊your fortified cities_⌋,* in which you trust.

⁶ For thus says Yahweh of hosts, "Cut down trees and heap up a siege ramp against Jerusalem. This is the city that must be punished, its oppression is in its midst. ⁷ As a water well keeps its water cool, so she keeps cool her wickedness. Violence and destruction are heard within her, sickness and wounds* are continually _⌊before me_⌋.*

¹⁰ To whom shall I speak and admonish, that they may hear? Look, their ears are _⌊closed_⌋,* and they are not able to listen attentively. Look, the word of Yahweh is to them an object of scorn, they do not delight in it.

⁹ Will you steal? Will you murder? And will you commit adultery? And will you swear _⌊falsely_⌋?* And will you make a smoke offering to the Baal? And will you go after other gods whom you have not known?

¹³ Then you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh: "Look, I am about to fill all the inhabitants of this land, and the kings who sit on David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with drunkenness. ¹⁴ And I will smash them, each one against his brother, and the fathers and the sons together," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "I will not have compassion, and I will not take pity, and I will not show compassion from destroying them." '"

¹ Then Yahweh said to me, "Even if Moses and Samuel stood _⌊before me_⌋,* my heart would not be to this people. Send them away from my _⌊sight_⌋,* and let them go out. ² _⌊And then_⌋* if they say to you, 'Where shall we go?' Then you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh,
"Those who are destined for the plague, to the plague, and those who are destined for the sword, to the sword, and those who are destined for the famine, to the famine, and those who are destined for the captivity, to the captivity." ' ³ "And I will summon* over them four types of calamity," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "the sword to kill, and the dogs to drag away, and the birds* of the air and the wild animals* of the earth to devour and to destroy. ⁴ And I will make them a terror to all of the kingdoms of the earth because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, because of what he did in Jerusalem.

¹³ I will give your wealth and your treasures as plunder without price, even because of all your sins, and throughout all your territories. ¹⁴ And I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for a fire will kindle in my anger. Upon you it will be kindled."

²⁷ But if you do not listen to me, to declare holy the day of the Sabbath, and to not carry a burden and enter through the gates of Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbath, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it will not be quenched." '"

¹⁶ To make their land a horror, an object of whistling for eternity. All who pass by it will be appalled, and he will shake his head. ¹⁷ Like the wind from the east I will scatter them _⌊before_⌋* the enemy. I will show them my back and not my face in the day of their disaster.'"

⁷ And I will lay waste the plans* of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will bring them to ruin by the sword _⌊before_⌋* their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life, and I will give their dead bodies* as food to the birds* of heaven and to the animals* of the earth. ⁸ And I will make this city a horror, and an object of hissing, everyone who passes by it will be appalled, and will hiss because of all its wounds. ⁹ And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons, and the flesh of their daughters, and each one will eat the flesh of his neighbor in the siege and in the distress which their enemies and those who seek their life inflict on them." ' ¹⁰ "Then you shall break the jar before the eyes of the men who go with you. ¹¹ And you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "So I will break this people and this city as one breaks the vessel of the potter, so that it is not able to be repaired again. And in Topheth they will bury _⌊until there is no room to bury_⌋.*

⁷ You have persuaded me, O Yahweh, and I was persuaded. You have overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long. _⌊Everyone_⌋* is mocking me.

⁸ The prophets who were _⌊before_⌋* me and _⌊before_⌋* you from ancient times prophesied against many countries and against great kingdoms of war, and of disaster, and of plague.

⁶¹ You have heard their disgrace, O Yahweh, all their plans against me. ⁶² The lips and meditation of my assailants are against me all day long. ⁶³ Look at their sitting and their standing, I am their mocking song.

⁴⁵ And one of the legal experts answered and* said to him, "Teacher, when you* say these things, you insult us also!"

²⁶ considering _⌊reproach endured for the sake of Christ_⌋* greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

¹³ So we must go out to him outside the camp, bearing his reproach.

¹⁴ If you are reviled on account of the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

³ Then he became afraid,* got up, and _⌊fled for his life_⌋.* He came to Beersheba which belongs to Judah, and he left his servant there. ⁴ Then he went into the wilderness one day's journey, and he went and sat under a certain broom tree. Then _⌊he asked Yahweh that he might die_⌋,* and he said, "It is enough now, Yahweh; take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."*

¹⁸ for I am full of words;* _⌊the spirit within me_⌋* urges me. ¹⁹ "Look, my internal organs are like unopened wine, like new wineskins it* is ready to burst open. ²⁰ Let me speak _⌊that I may find relief_⌋;* let me open my lips, and let me answer.

³ My heart grew hot inside me; in my sighing a fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue,

¹¹ But I am full with the wrath of Yahweh, I struggle to hold it* in. Pour it out on the children* in the street, and on the assemblies* of young men at the same time. For even husband with wife will get trapped, the old with him who is full of days.

⁶² But Jesus said,* "No one who puts his* hand on the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God!"

² This one was in the beginning with God. ³ All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being that* has come into being.

² (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples), ³ he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

²⁰ For we are not able to refrain from speaking about the things that we have seen and heard."

³⁷ Now Barnabas wanted to take John who was called Mark along also, ³⁸ but Paul held the opinion they should not take this one along, who departed from them in Pamphylia and did not accompany them in the work.

¹⁶ Now while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he* observed the city was full of idols.

⁵ Now when both Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began to be occupied with* the message, solemnly testifying to the Jews that the Christ* was Jesus.

¹⁶ For if I proclaim the gospel, it is not to me a reason for boasting, for necessity is imposed on me. For woe is to me if I do not proclaim the gospel. ¹⁷ For if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward, but if I do so unwillingly, I have been entrusted with a stewardship.

¹³ For if we are out of our senses, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you. ¹⁴ For the love of Christ controls us, because we* have concluded this: that one died for all; as a result all died. ¹⁵ And he died for all, in order that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the one who died for them and was raised.

² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "Thus may the gods do to me, and may they add to it, surely at this time tomorrow I will make your life as the life of one of them!"

²⁰ Then Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, my enemy?" He said, "I have found you because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of Yahweh.

⁸ Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man to inquire from Yahweh, but I despise him, for he never prophesies anything good concerning me, but only bad: Micaiah the son of Imlah." Then Jehoshaphat said, "The king should not say so."

⁶ In it was written, "It has been reported among the nations, and Gashmu also is saying it, that you and the Jews are considering rebellion. Therefore, truly you are building the wall and you are becoming their king, according to these words. ⁷ You have also set up prophets to proclaim in Jerusalem concerning you, saying, 'There is a king in Judah.' And now it will be proclaimed to the king according to these words. Now, come and we will plan together." ⁸ So I sent to him saying, "None of these words you have spoken has happened. You are indeed saying things created in your own mind"— ⁹ for all of them sought to frighten us, saying, "their hands will not do the work." And now, God, strengthen my hands. ¹⁰ Now I went into the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was confined at home, and he said, "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple; for they are coming to kill you—during the night they are coming to kill you." ¹¹ But I said, "Should a man like me run away? And would a man like me go into the temple so that he can save his life? I will not go in!" ¹² Then I look and realized God had not sent him; rather, he had spoken the prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. ¹³ For this reason he was hired: to frighten me so that I would act and sin, so that they would have a bad report so they could taunt me.

¹⁹ All _⌊my intimate friends_⌋* abhor me, and these whom I have loved have turned against me.

⁹ Even _⌊my close friend_⌋,* whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

¹³ But it is you, a man my equal, my friend and confidant. ¹⁴ We who would take sweet counsel together; in the house* of God we would walk with the throng.

⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie down among those who devour— the children* of humankind whose teeth are spears and arrows and whose tongues are sharp swords.

² Hide me from the secret plots* of evildoers, from the unrest of those who do iniquity, ³ who sharpen their tongue like a sword. They bend their bow to shoot their arrows—bitter words, ⁴ to shoot from* their* hiding places at the blameless. Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.

¹⁸ He who conceals hatred has lips of deceit, and he who utters slander—he is a fool.

²¹ those who mislead a person into sin with a word and set a trap for the _⌊arbitrator_⌋* in the gate and guide away the righteous by emptiness.

¹⁸ Then they said, "Come and let us plan plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will not be lost from the priest, nor advice from the wise man, nor the word from the prophet. Come and _⌊let us bring charges against him_⌋,* and let us not listen attentively to any of his words."

⁹ Slanderous men are _⌊among you_⌋* to shed blood, and they, _⌊among you_⌋,* eat upon the mountains; they do wickedness in the midst of you.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order that they could put him to death. ⁶⁰ And they did not find it,* although* many false witnesses came forward. And finally two came forward

¹⁹ So Herodias held a grudge against him and was wanting to kill him, and was not able to do so. ²⁰ For Herod was afraid of John, because he* knew him to be a righteous and holy man and protected him. And when he* listened to him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he listened to him gladly. ²¹ And a suitable day came when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers and military tribunes and the most prominent men of Galilee. ²² And when* the daughter of Herodias herself* came in and danced and pleased* Herod and _⌊his dinner guests_⌋,* the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it* to you." ²³ And he swore to her,* "Anything whatever you ask me for I will give you, up to half my kingdom!" ²⁴ And she went out and* said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the baptizer." ²⁵ And she came in immediately with haste to the king and* asked, saying, "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately." ²⁶ And although he* was deeply grieved, the king, because of his* oaths and _⌊dinner guests_⌋,* did not want to refuse her. ²⁷ And immediately the king sent an executioner and* ordered him* to bring his head. And he went and* beheaded him in the prison. ²⁸ And he brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

⁵³ And when* he departed from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly hostile, and to question him closely about many things, ⁵⁴ plotting to catch him with reference to something _⌊he might say_⌋.*

⁵² For from now on there will be five in one household, divided three against two and two against three. ⁵³ They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

²⁰ And they watched him* closely and* sent spies who pretended they were upright, in order that they could catch him in a statement, so that they could hand him over to the authority and the jurisdiction of the governor.

³³ Now when* they heard this,* they were infuriated, and were wanting to execute them.

¹¹ Then they secretly instigated men who said, "We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God!" ¹² And they incited the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came up and* seized him and brought him* to the Sanhedrin.* ¹³ And they put forward false witnesses who said, "This man does not stop speaking words against the holy place* and the law! ¹⁴ For we have heard him saying that this Nazarene Jesus will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses handed down to us." ¹⁵ And as they* looked intently at him, all those who were sitting in the Sanhedrin* saw his face was like the face of an angel.

⁵⁴ Now when they* heard these things, they were infuriated in their hearts and gnashed their* teeth at him.

¹² And when it* was day, the Jews made a conspiracy and* bound themselves under a curse, saying they would* neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul. ¹³ Now there were more than forty who had made this conspiracy, ¹⁴ who went to the chief priests and the elders and* said, "We have bound ourselves under a curse to partake of nothing until we have killed Paul. ¹⁵ Therefore, now you along with the Sanhedrin explain to the military tribune that he should bring him down to you, as if you were going to determine more accurately the things concerning him. And we are ready to do away with him before he comes near."

¹ And after five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an attorney, a certain Tertullus, all of whom brought charges against Paul to the governor. ² And when* he had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him,* saying, "We have experienced* much* peace through you, and reforms are taking place in this nation through your foresight. ³ Both in every way and everywhere we acknowledge this,* most excellent Felix, with all gratitude. ⁴ But so that I may not impose on you for longer, I implore you to hear us briefly with your customary graciousness. ⁵ For we have found* this man to be a public menace and one who causes riots among all the Jews throughout the Roman Empire* and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes, ⁶ who even attempted to desecrate the temple, and we arrested _⌊him*_⌋.*

⁸ When* you yourself examine him* you will be able to find out from _⌊him_⌋* about all these things of which we are accusing him." ⁹ And the Jews also joined in the attack, asserting these things were so.

¹³ Nor can they prove the things* to you concerning which they are now accusing me.

³⁵ _⌊Vengeance belongs to me_⌋* and also recompense, _⌊for at the time their foot slips_⌋,* because the day of their disaster is near, _⌊and fate comes quickly for them_⌋.'* ³⁶ For Yahweh will judge on behalf of his people, and concerning his servants; he will change his mind when he sees that their power has disappeared, and there is no one left, confined* or free.*

¹⁰ All my enemies shall be ashamed and shall be very terrified. They shall turn back; they shall suddenly be ashamed.

¹ Of David.*
Yahweh is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the refuge of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ² When evildoers drew near against me to eat my flesh— my adversaries and my enemies who drew near to me— they themselves stumbled and fell.

²⁶ Let them be shamed and abashed altogether, who rejoice at my misfortune. Let them put on shame and insult, who magnify themselves against me.

¹⁴ Let them be shamed and abashed altogether who seek to take away my life.* Let them be repulsed and humiliated who desire my harm.

² For Yahweh Most High is awesome,* a great king over all the earth.

⁵ By awesome deeds in righteousness you will answer us, O God of our salvation, you who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth and of the far-off seas,

⁵ Come and _⌊consider_⌋* the works of God; he is awesome in his dealings* with the children of humankind.

¹⁰ You must not fear, for I am with you; you must not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, indeed I will help you, indeed I will take hold of you with the right hand of my salvation.

¹⁴ You must not fear, O worm of Jacob; people of Israel, I myself, I will help you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and your redeemer is the holy one of Israel.

¹⁶ All of them are ashamed and indeed humiliated; the craftsmen of idols go together in insult.

⁸ _⌊Do not be afraid of them_⌋,* for I am with you to deliver you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

²⁰ And I will make you to this people a wall of fortified bronze, and they will fight against you, but they will not prevail over you, for I am with you, to save you, and to deliver you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁸ Let my persecutors be put to shame, _⌊but as for me_⌋,* do not let me be put to shame. Let them be dismayed, _⌊but as for me_⌋,* do not let me be dismayed. Bring on them the day of disaster, and with double destruction, destroy them.

⁴⁰ and I will bring upon you _⌊an everlasting disgrace_⌋* and _⌊an everlasting shame_⌋* that will not be forgotten."

² And many from those sleeping _⌊in the dusty ground_⌋* will awake, some to _⌊everlasting life_⌋* and some to disgrace and _⌊everlasting contempt_⌋.*

⁴ Then Jesus, because he* knew all the things that were coming upon him, went out and said to them, "Who are you looking for?" ⁵ They replied to him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am he."* (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was also standing with them.) ⁶ So when he said to them, "I am he,"* _⌊they drew back_⌋* and fell to the ground.

³¹ What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

¹⁷ But the Lord helped me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fulfilled and all the Gentiles might hear, and he rescued me from the lion's mouth.

¹⁵ But Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord. I am a woman _⌊deeply distressed_⌋,* but I have not drunk wine or strong drink. Rather, I have poured out my soul before Yahweh.

²² So King Joash did not remember the loyal love that Jehoiada had shown to him, and he killed his son. And as he was dying he said, "May Yahweh see and avenge!"

⁹ Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous, and test the hearts and innermost being, O righteous God.

⁵ Yahweh tests the righteous, but the wicked and the lover of violence his soul hates.

³ You have tried my heart; you have examined me by night; you have tested me; you found nothing. I have decided that my mouth will not transgress.

² Prove me, O Yahweh, and test me. Try my _⌊innermost being_⌋* and my _⌊mind_⌋.* ³ Because your loyal love is before my eyes, and I walk about in your faithfulness.

⁷ Because he has delivered me from all trouble, and my eye has looked with satisfaction on my enemies.

¹⁰ My* God of loyal love will meet me; God will cause me to look in triumph on my enemies.

⁸ Trust him at all times, O people; pour out before him your heart. God is a refuge for us. Selah

⁴ Make glad the soul of your servant, because _⌊I desire you_⌋,* O Lord.

⁶ Appoint over him a wicked man, and let an accuser stand at his right hand. ⁷ When he is judged, let him come out guilty, and let his prayer* become as sin. ⁸ Let his days be few; let another take his office. ⁹ Let his children be orphans, and his wife a widow, ¹⁰ and let his children wander aimlessly and beg, and let them plead from their ruins. ¹¹ Let the creditor seize all that is his, and let strangers plunder his property. ¹² Let there be none who extend to him loyal love, nor any who pities his orphans. ¹³ Let his descendants* be cut off. Let their name be blotted out in the next generation. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his ancestors* be remembered before Yahweh, and let the sin of his mother not be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before Yahweh continually, that he may cut off their* memory from the earth, ¹⁶ because he did not remember to show loyal love, but he pursued anyone,* poor or needy or brokenhearted, to slay them. ¹⁷ Because he loved cursing, let it come upon him. Because he did not delight in blessing, let it be far from him. ¹⁸ Because he wore a curse as his robe, let it enter _⌊his body_⌋* like water, and into his bones like oil. ¹⁹ May it be for him like a garment in which he wraps, and a belt _⌊he continually wears_⌋.* ²⁰ Let this be the punishment for my accusers from Yahweh, even those who speak evil against my life.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

¹⁴ And Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers, and he read* it. Then* he went up to the temple* of Yahweh, and Hezekiah spread it out before the _⌊presence_⌋* of Yahweh.

¹⁴ Like a horse or a crane, so I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are weak toward the height. Lord, I have oppression; lend me support!

²⁰ But O Yahweh of hosts, who judges in righteousness, who tests the _⌊inmost being_⌋,* and the _⌊mind_⌋,* let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have revealed my legal case.

⁸ My inheritance has become to me like a lion in the forest. She has lifted up against me her voice; _⌊therefore_⌋* I hate her.

¹⁰ I, Yahweh, examine the _⌊mind_⌋,* I test the _⌊heart_⌋,* and give to each one according to his way, according to the fruit of his deeds.

¹⁹ Listen attentively to me, O Yahweh, and listen to the voice of my opponents. ²⁰ Should good be repaid in place of evil? Yet they have dug a pit for me. Remember my standing _⌊before you_⌋* to speak good for them, to avert your wrath from them. ²¹ _⌊Therefore_⌋* give their children to the famine, and hand them over to the _⌊power_⌋* of the sword, and let their wives be bereaved and widows, and let their men be killed by death, their young men struck dead by the sword in the battle. ²² Let a cry for help be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring upon them the raiding band, for they have dug a pit to catch me, and they have fixed secretly a trap for my feet. ²³ But you, O Yahweh, you know _⌊all their plans of assassination against me_⌋.* You must not make atonement for their iniquity, and you must not cause their sin to be blotted out from _⌊before you_⌋.* But let them be overthrown _⌊before you_⌋.* Deal with them in the time of your anger.

²³ who when he* was reviled, did not revile in return; when* suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly,

¹⁹ So then also those who suffer according to the will of God must entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.

²³ And I will kill her children with deadly disease, and all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts, and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

¹⁰ and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "_⌊How long_⌋*, holy and true Lord, will you not judge and avenge our blood from those who live on the earth?"

²⁰ Rejoice over her, heaven and the saints and the apostles and the prophets, because God has pronounced your judgment on her!"

² because his judgments are true and righteous, because he has passed judgment on the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality, and has avenged the blood of his slaves _⌊shed by_⌋* her hand!" ³ And a second time they said,
"Hallelujah!"
And her smoke goes up _⌊forever and ever_⌋*.

⁶ This poor man called and Yahweh heard, and saved him from all his troubles.

⁹ Then my soul will rejoice in Yahweh; it will rejoice in his salvation. ¹⁰ All of my bones shall say, "O Yahweh, who is like you, who delivers the poor from one stronger than he and the poor and needy from the one who robs him?" ¹¹ Violent witnesses rise up; they ask me concerning what I do not know.

³³ because Yahweh hears the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners.

⁴ May he provide justice for the poor of the people, save the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor.

³⁰ I will give thanks to Yahweh exceedingly with my mouth, and in the midst of many I will praise him, ³¹ for he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those judging his life.*

⁴ For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the rainstorm, a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless was like a rainstorm against a wall,*

⁵ Listen, my dear brothers! Did not God choose the poor of the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? ⁶ But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich exploiting you and they themselves dragging you into the courts?

³ "Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, 'A man-child is conceived.' ⁴ Let that day become* darkness; may God not seek it from above, nor may daylight shine on it. ⁵ Let darkness and deep shadow claim it; let clouds* settle on it; let them* terrify it with the blackness* of day. ⁶ Let darkness seize that night;* let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not enter among the number of the months. ⁷ Look, let that night become* barren; let a joyful song not enter it. ⁸ Let those who curse the day curse it, those who are skilled at rousing Leviathan. ⁹ Let the stars of its dawn be dark; let it hope for light but* there be none, and let it not see the eyelids of dawn ¹⁰ because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb, nor* did it hide trouble from my eyes. ¹¹ "Why did I not die at* birth? Why did I not come forth from the womb and expire? ¹² Why did the knees receive me and the breasts, that I could suck? ¹³ For now I would lie down, and I would be at peace; I would be asleep; then _⌊I would be at rest_⌋* ¹⁴ with kings and counselors of the earth, who _⌊rebuild_⌋ * ruins for themselves, ¹⁵ or with high officials _⌊who have gold_⌋,* who fill up their houses with silver. ¹⁶ Or why was I not hidden like a miscarriage, like infants who did not see the light?

⁵ And Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him. ⁶ And Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; all who hear will laugh for me."

⁵ "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you came out from the womb I consecrated you; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

¹⁴ And _⌊you will experience joy and exultation_⌋,* and many will rejoice at his birth.

²⁴ Yahweh rained down from heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh. ²⁵ And he overthrew those cities and the whole plain, and the inhabitants of the cities and the vegetation of the ground.

²³ 'All its land is brimstone and salt left by fire, _⌊none of its land will be sown_⌋,* and it will not make plants sprout out and it will not grow any vegetation; it is as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Adman and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overturned in his anger and in his wrath.'

¹⁹ My bowels, my bowels! I writhe! The walls of my heart! My heart is restless within me, I cannot keep silent, for I hear in my inner self the sound of a horn, the alarm of war.

⁸ But if that nation turns back from its evil that I have threatened against it, then I will relent concerning the disaster that I planned to do to it.

²² Let a cry for help be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring upon them the raiding band, for they have dug a pit to catch me, and they have fixed secretly a trap for my feet.

¹³ Now _⌊therefore_⌋* amend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of Yahweh your God, and Yahweh will relent of the disaster that he has spoken over you.

³ The sound of a cry of distress arises from Horonaim, devastation and great destruction. ⁴ Moab is broken, her little ones _⌊make heard_⌋* a cry for help.

²² In his right hand is the divination for Jerusalem, to put up battering rams, to open a mouth for slaughter,* _⌊to raise the battle cry_⌋,* to put up battering rams against gates, to build a siege ramp, to build siege works.*

¹⁴ The tumult of war will rise up against your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel; on the day of war mothers were dashed to pieces with their children.*

⁸ How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is disturbed* within me; _⌊all_⌋* my compassions are aroused.

¹⁴ So I will kindle a fire against the wall of Rabbah and it will devour its citadel fortresses with a war cry on the day of battle, with a storm on the day of the violent tempest.

² So I will send a fire against Moab and it will devour the citadel fortresses of Kerioth, and Moab will die amid uproar, amid war cries and amid the sound of a horn.

¹¹ "I overthrew some of you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a stick snatched from the fire, and yet you did not return to me," is the declaration of Yahweh.

⁴ And Jonah began to go into the city a journey of one day, and he cried out and said, "Forty more days and Nineveh will be demolished!"*

⁹ Who knows? God may relent and change his mind and turn _⌊from his blazing anger_⌋* _⌊so that_⌋* we will not perish." ¹⁰ And God saw their deeds—that they turned from their evil ways—and God changed his mind about the evil that he had said he would bring upon them, and he did not do it.*

² And he prayed to Yahweh and said, "O Yahweh, was this not _⌊what I said_⌋* while I was in my homeland? Therefore _⌊I originally fled_⌋* to Tarshish, because I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger _⌊and having great steadfast love_⌋,* and one who relents concerning calamity.*

¹⁶ a day of trumpet and trumpet blast against the fortified cities and against the high corner towers.

⁹ "Therefore, as I live"—a declaration of Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel— "Moab shall be as Sodom, and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* like Gomorrah, a place of weeds and salt pits and a desolation forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remainder of my nation shall possess them."

²⁹ But on the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed them all.

⁶ and condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, reducing them to ashes, having appointed them as an example for those who are going to be ungodly,

⁷ as Sodom and Gomorrah and the towns around them indulged in sexual immorality and _⌊pursued unnatural desire_⌋* in the same way as these, are exhibited as an example by* undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

¹⁰ because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb, nor* did it hide trouble from my eyes. ¹¹ "Why did I not die at* birth? Why did I not come forth from the womb and expire?

¹⁶ Or why was I not hidden like a miscarriage, like infants who did not see the light?

¹⁸ So* why did you bring me forth from the womb? I should have passed away, _⌊and no eye should have seen me_⌋.* ¹⁹ I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been brought from the womb to the grave.

³ Even if a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years so that the days of his years are many, if his heart* is not satisfied with _⌊his prosperity_⌋* and _⌊he does not receive a proper burial_⌋,* I deem the stillborn better than him.

¹⁶ To the woman he said,
"I will greatly increase _⌊your pain in childbearing_⌋;* in pain you shall bear children. And to your husband shall be your desire. And he shall rule over you." ¹⁷ And to Adam* he said, "Because you listened to the voice of your wife and you ate from the tree _⌊from which I forbade you to eat_⌋,*
the ground shall be cursed on your account. In pain you shall eat from it all the days of your life. ¹⁸ And thorns and thistles shall sprout for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field. ¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow* you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return." ²⁰ "Why does he* give light to one in misery and life to those bitter of soul,

¹ "A human being born of a woman is short of days and full of troubles.*

¹³ "_⌊O that_⌋* you would conceal me in Sheol, that you would hide me _⌊until your wrath is past_⌋,* that you would appoint a set time for me and remember me.

¹⁹ You know my reproach, my shame and my disgrace. _⌊Fully known_⌋* to you are all my adversaries.

⁹ For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh. ¹⁰ As for the days of our years, within them are seventy years or if by strength eighty years, and their pride* is trouble and disaster, for it passes quickly and we fly away.

⁶ From the sole of the foot and up to the head there is no health in it; bruise and sore and bleeding wound have not been cleansed, and they have not been bound up and not softened with the oil.

⁷ Listen to me, you who know righteousness, people who have my teaching in their heart; you must not fear the reproach of men, or be terrified because of their abuse.

¹⁸ "My comfort is gone from me, sorrow is on me, my heart is sick.

¹² Is it nothing to you, _⌊all who pass by_⌋?* Look and see if there is sorrow like my sorrow,* which was dealt to me, which Yahweh inflicted on the _⌊day of his wrath_⌋.*

¹ I am a man who has seen misery, under the rod of his wrath.

²⁰ Truly, truly I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will change to joy.

⁴¹ So they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin* rejoicing, because they had been considered worthy to be dishonored for the sake of the name.

¹² for which reason also I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know in whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted until that day.

³⁶ For you have need of endurance, in order that after you* have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.

² fixing our eyes on Jesus, the originator and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

¹⁴ If you are reviled on account of the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. ¹⁵ By all means do not let anyone of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. ¹⁶ But if someone suffers as a Christian, he must not be ashamed, but must glorify God with this name.
