¹² And I spoke words like these to Zedekiah, the king of Judah, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live.

¹¹ Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. ¹² And he did evil in the eyes of Yahweh his God. He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet _⌊who spoke for_⌋* Yahweh. ¹³ And he also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to Yahweh, the God of Israel.

³³ Whoever listens to me will dwell in security and rest securely* from dread and disaster."

² thus said Yahweh to me—"Make for yourself fetters and yokes and put them on your neck, ³ and send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and to the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon in the hand of the envoys who have come to Jerusalem, to Zedekiah, the king of Judah.

⁸ "But it will be that the nation or kingdom that will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put his neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, and with the famine, and with the plague," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "until I have destroyed it with my hand.

¹ And it was in that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, the king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananiah, the son of Azzur, the prophet who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of Yahweh before the eyes of the priests and all the people, _⌊saying_⌋,*

¹⁷ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, 'If only you will go surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then _⌊you_⌋* will live, and this city will not be burned with fire, and you will live, you and your house.

¹¹ And the word of Yahweh _⌊came_⌋* to me, _⌊saying_⌋, ¹² "Say now to the rebellious house of Israel, 'Do you not know what these are?'* Say, 'Look! The king of Babylon will come to Jerusalem, and he will take its king and its officials, and he will bring* them to himself,* to Babylon. ¹³ And he took from the seed of the kingship, and he made with him a covenant, and _⌊he brought him under oath_⌋,* and he took the rulers of the land, ¹⁴ so that they would be a humble kingdom and not lift itself up to keep his covenant _⌊in order for it to stand_⌋.* ¹⁵ But he rebelled against him by sending his messengers to Egypt to give to him horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he escape doing these things, and can he break the covenant and escape? ¹⁶ _⌊As I live_⌋,'* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, '_⌊surely_⌋* in the place of the king _⌊who made_⌋* him king, who despised his oath and who broke his covenant with him—in the midst of Babylon he will die. ¹⁷ And not with a great army and with a great crowd will Pharaoh work* with him in the war, at the pouring out of a siege ramp and the building of siege works to destroy many lives. ¹⁸ And he despised the oath to break covenant. And, look, he gave his hand in pledge, and yet he did all of these things. He will not escape.' ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: '_⌊As I live_⌋,* _⌊surely_⌋* my oath that he despised and my covenant that he broke I will return upon his head. ²⁰ And I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my hunting net, and I will bring him to Babylon, and I will enter into judgment with him there about his infidelity that he displayed against me. ²¹ And all of his choice troops, among all of his troops, they will fall by the sword, and those who are remaining,* they will be scattered to all the directions of the wind, and you will know that I, Yahweh, I have spoken.'
