¹ The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh after Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* had let him go from Ramah, _⌊where he had been taken_⌋* bound in chains in the midst of all the exiles* of Jerusalem and Judah who were being deported to Babylon. ² And the captain of the guard* took Jeremiah and said to him, "Yahweh your God threatened this disaster to this place, ³ and now he has brought it about,* and Yahweh has done _⌊just as_⌋* he threatened. Because you sinned against Yahweh and did not listen to his voice, so this thing has happened to you. ⁴ And so then look, I have released you _⌊today_⌋* from the chains that were on your hands.* If it is good in your eyes to come with me to Babylon, then come, and _⌊I will take care of you_⌋.* But if it is bad in your eyes to come with me to Babylon, then refrain. Look, the whole land is _⌊before you_⌋.* To wherever it is good and right in your eyes to go, then go there." ⁵ While he still had not turned back, Nebuzaradan added, "Return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed in an official position over the towns of Judah, and stay with him in the midst of the people. Or to wherever it is right in your eyes to go, then go there."* Then the captain of the guard* gave him an allowance of provisions and a present, and let him go. ⁶ So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah and stayed with him in the midst of the people who were left in the land. ⁷ When all the commanders of the armies who were in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam in an official position in the land, and that _⌊he had put him in charge of_⌋* men, and women, and little children, and of the poor of the land, of all those who had not been deported to Babylon, ⁸ then they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan, and Jehonathan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. ⁹ And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and to their men, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You must not be afraid of serving the Chaldeans. Stay in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you. ¹⁰ _⌊As for me_⌋,* look, I am staying at Mizpah to represent you _⌊before_⌋* the Chaldeans who come to us. But you, gather wine and summer fruit and oil, and put them in your vessels, and live in your towns that you have seized." ¹¹ And also all the Judeans who were in Moab, and among the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and in Edom, and who were in all the lands, when they heard that the king of Babylon had given a remnant to Judah and that he had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, in an official position over them, ¹² then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they were scattered. And they came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and they gathered wine and summer fruit that yielded _⌊in great abundance_⌋.* ¹³ And Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah ¹⁴ and said to him, "_⌊Are you at all aware_⌋* that Baalis, the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, to kill you?" But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. ¹⁵ Then Johanan the son of Kareah said to Gedaliah in secrecy at Mizpah, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Please let me go and kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and _⌊nobody_⌋* will know. Why should he kill you, so that all of Judah who are gathered to you will be scattered, and the remnant of Judah will perish?" ¹⁶ But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, "You must not do this thing, for you are telling a lie about Ishmael."

¹⁷ Then _⌊he returned_⌋* to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel, and he built an altar to Yahweh there.

⁶ God settles the lonely in a home; he brings prisoners out into prosperity. But the rebellious abide in a barren land.

¹⁶ for he shatters the doors of bronze, and cuts through the bars of iron.

¹⁵ Thus says Yahweh, "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, the weeping of bitterness. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted because of her children, for they are no more."

¹¹ And Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon commanded concerning Jeremiah _⌊through_⌋* Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* _⌊saying_⌋,* ¹² "Take him and set your eyes on him. And you must not do something bad to him, _⌊but only_⌋* that which he speaks to you, so do with him." ¹³ So Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* sent word, _⌊along with_⌋* Nebushazban the chief officer, and Nergal-sharezer the high official, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon. ¹⁴ And they sent and took Jeremiah from the courtyard of the guard and gave him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him to the house, so he stayed in the midst of the people.

⁶ Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards before the door were watching the prison. ⁷ And behold, an angel of the Lord stood near him,* and a light shone in the prison cell. And striking Peter's side, he woke him up, saying, "Get up _⌊quickly_⌋!"* And his chains fell off of his* hands.

¹³ Then Paul replied, "What are you doing weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus!"

²⁰ Therefore for this reason I have requested to see you and to speak with you,* for because of the hope of Israel I am wearing this chain!"

²⁰ for the sake of which I am an ambassador in chains, that _⌊in them_⌋* I may speak freely, as it is necessary for me to speak.

²⁴ And all the nations will say, '_⌊Why_⌋* has Yahweh done _⌊such a thing_⌋* to this land? What caused the fierceness of this great anger?' ²⁵ And they will say,* 'It is because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* which he _⌊made_⌋* with them _⌊when he brought them out_⌋* from the land of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods whom they did not know them and he* had not allotted to them. ²⁷ So _⌊the anger of Yahweh was kindled_⌋* against that land to bring upon it all the curses written in this scroll, ²⁸ and Yahweh uprooted them from their land in anger and in wrath and in great fury, and he cast them into another land, _⌊just as it is today_⌋.'*

⁸ This house shall become a heap of ruins; all those passing by will be appalled by it and hiss, and they will say, 'On what account did Yahweh do this to this land and to this house?' ⁹ And they will say, 'Because they have forsaken Yahweh their God who brought their ancestors* out from the land of Egypt and they embraced other gods and bowed down to them and served them. Therefore, Yahweh brought on them all of this disaster.'"

²⁰ then I will uproot them from upon my land that I have given to them, and this house that I have consecrated for my name I will send away from before my face, and I will make it a proverb and a taunt among all the nations. ²¹ And as for this house, which was exalted, all who pass by it will be appalled and will say, 'Why has Yahweh done thus to this land and to this house?' ²² Then they will say, 'Because they forsook Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* who brought them out from the land of Egypt, and they laid hold of other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore he has brought upon them all this evil.'"

⁸ And many nations will pass by this city and they will say each one to his neighbor, '_⌊Why_⌋* has Yahweh done in this manner to this great city?' ⁹ Then they will answer, 'Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh their God, and bowed down in worship to other gods, and served them.'"

¹⁵ They clap hands over you, all who pass along the way; they hiss and they shake their head, at the daughter of Jerusalem. Is this the city of which it is said, "A perfection of beauty, a joy for all the earth?" ¹⁶ They have opened their mouths against you, all your enemies. They hiss and gnash a tooth, and they say, "We have destroyed her! Surely this is the day we have hoped for; we have found it, we have seen it!" ¹⁷ Yahweh has done what he has planned; he has fulfilled his promise that he ordained from the days of old; he has demolished and not shown mercy; he has made an enemy rejoice over you, he has exalted the _⌊might_⌋* of your foes.

²⁵ And they will say,* 'It is because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* which he _⌊made_⌋* with them _⌊when he brought them out_⌋* from the land of Egypt.

²⁸ But when they had rest they returned to doing evil before you, and you abandoned them in the hand of their enemies, and they ruled over them. Then they returned and cried out to you, and from the heavens you heard and many times rescued them according to your compassions.

³³ You are righteous in everything that has come on us, for you dealt faithfully, and we have acted wickedly.

⁷ All those who found them have devoured them. And their foes have said, 'We are not guilty, _⌊because_⌋* they have sinned against Yahweh, the _⌊true pasture_⌋,* even Yahweh, the hope of their ancestors.'*

¹¹ "And all Israel transgressed your law and turned aside so as not to listen to your voice, and so the curse and the oath which was written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, has been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. ¹² And so he has carried out his words which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, to bring upon us a great calamity which was not done under all of heaven as it was done in Jerusalem.

⁵ But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those under the law, in order that every mouth may be closed and the whole world may become accountable to God.

⁹ Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you want what is on the left, then I will go right; if you want what is on the right, I will go left."

¹⁵ And Abimelech said, "Here is my land before you; settle _⌊where it pleases you_⌋."*

¹¹ And Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon commanded concerning Jeremiah _⌊through_⌋* Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* _⌊saying_⌋,* ¹² "Take him and set your eyes on him. And you must not do something bad to him, _⌊but only_⌋* that which he speaks to you, so do with him."

⁷ Elisha came to Damascus. Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram was ill, and he was told, "The man of God has come up here." ⁸ Then the king said to Hazael, "Take a gift in your hand and go meet the man of God. Inquire of Yahweh from him, saying, 'Shall I recover from this illness?'" ⁹ So Hazael went to meet him and took a gift in his hand of all of the good things of Damascus, a load on each of forty camels, and he came and stood before him. Then he said, "Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to you, saying, 'Shall I recover from this illness?'"

¹² Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Acbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the servant of the king, saying,

¹⁴ So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Harhas, the keeper of the robes. Now she was living in Jerusalem in the second district. Then they spoke to her,

²² Now as far as the people left in Judah whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon left behind, he appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan over them. ²³ When all of the commanders of the troops heard, they and the men, that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seriah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. ²⁴ Gedaliah swore to them and to their men, and he said to them, "You must not be afraid because of the Chaldeans. Settle in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and may it go well with you."

²⁰ and the king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king, saying,

⁶ this Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses, which Yahweh the God of Israel gave. The king granted him all his requests, for the hand of Yahweh was upon him.

²⁷ Blessed be Yahweh the God of our ancestors,* who put this in the heart of the king to glorify the house of Yahweh in Jerusalem

¹¹ O Lord, please let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight to revere in your name. Please, let your servant be successful this day and give him compassion before this man."
I was cupbearer for the king.

⁴ Then the king said to me, "What is your request?" So I prayed to the God of the heavens. ⁵ Then I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your presence, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my ancestors'* burial sites, so that I may rebuild it." ⁶ With the queen sitting beside him, the king said to me, "How long will your journey be and when will you return?" So it pleased the king and he sent me, and I set for him an appointed time. ⁷ Then I said to the king, "If it is good for the king, let letters be given to me for the governors in the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass until I come to Judah. ⁸ Also, a letter to Asaph, keeper of the king's land reserve, that he should give me timber for laying the beams for the gates of the citadel of the house and for the walls of the city, and for the house which I will enter." And the king gave permission to me, according to the good hand of God on me.

²⁹ When they are humiliated, _⌊you say_⌋,* 'It is pride,' for* he saves _⌊the humble_⌋.*

⁷ When the ways of a man are pleasing to Yahweh, even his enemies he will cause to make peace with him.

¹ Streams of water are the heart* of a king in the hand of Yahweh; _⌊wherever_⌋* he will desire, he will turn.

¹¹ Yahweh said,
"_⌊Surely_⌋* I will set you free _⌊to be good_⌋* for you, _⌊surely_⌋* I will cause the enemy to intercede with you in a time of trouble, and in a time of distress.

²⁴ However, the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that he was not given into the hand of the people to put him to death.

¹⁴ And they sent and took Jeremiah from the courtyard of the guard and gave him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him to the house, so he stayed in the midst of the people.

⁴ And so then look, I have released you _⌊today_⌋* from the chains that were on your hands.* If it is good in your eyes to come with me to Babylon, then come, and _⌊I will take care of you_⌋.* But if it is bad in your eyes to come with me to Babylon, then refrain. Look, the whole land is _⌊before you_⌋.* To wherever it is good and right in your eyes to go, then go there."

² And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah got up, _⌊along with_⌋* the ten men who were with him, and they struck Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and killed him whom the king of Babylon had appointed in an official position over the land.

³¹ _⌊And then_⌋* in the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-fifth day of the month, Evil-merodach, the king of Babylon, in the first year of his reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, and brought him out from _⌊prison_⌋.* ³² Then he spoke with him kindly and gave his seat above the seats* of the kings who were with him in Babylon. ³³ So he changed the garments of his imprisonment and he ate food _⌊before him_⌋* continually all the days of his life. ³⁴ And his allowance, a continual allowance was given to him by the king of Babylon _⌊on a daily basis_⌋* all the days of his life up to the day of his death.

³ And on the next day, we put in at Sidon. And Julius, treating Paul kindly, allowed him* to go to his* friends _⌊to be cared for_⌋.*

⁴³ but the centurion, because he* wanted to save Paul, prevented them _⌊from doing what they intended_⌋,* and gave orders that those who were able to swim should jump in first to get to the land,

¹⁰ They also honored us with many honors, and when we* were putting out to sea, they gave us* the things _⌊we needed_⌋.*

⁶ So then, we can say with confidence,
"The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.* What will man do to me?"*

¹ All the _⌊Israelites_⌋* went out, from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead, and they gathered as one body* to Yahweh at Mizpah.

¹ The men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, saying, "None of us will give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife."

⁵ Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to Yahweh for you." ⁶ So they gathered to Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted on that day and said there, "We have sinned against Yahweh!" So Samuel judged the _⌊Israelites_⌋* at Mizpah.

⁴ Then the city was breached, and all of the men of war entered by night by way of the gate between the wall which was by the garden of the king, and the Chaldeans were against the city all around, so he* left by the way of the Arabah.

²² Now as far as the people left in Judah whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon left behind, he appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan over them. ²³ When all of the commanders of the troops heard, they and the men, that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seriah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. ²⁴ Gedaliah swore to them and to their men, and he said to them, "You must not be afraid because of the Chaldeans. Settle in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and may it go well with you." ²⁵ But it happened in the seventh month that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama from the offspring of the kingship came, and ten men with him, and they struck down Gedaliah so that he died with the Judeans and with the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah. ²⁶ Then all the people, from youngest to oldest, and the commanders of the troops, went to Egypt, for they were afraid of the presence of the Chaldeans.

⁴ _⌊And then_⌋* _⌊when_⌋* Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all _⌊the soldiers_⌋* with him, they fled and went out at night from the city by the way of the garden of the king through the gate between the walls. And they went out toward the Jordan Valley.

¹⁰ And some of the poor people, _⌊who had nothing_⌋,* Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* left in the land of Judah. And he gave them vineyards and fields on that day.

²⁴ "Son of man,* the inhabitants of these ruins on the soil of Israel are saying, 'Abraham was one man, and he took possession of the land, and we are many; the land has been given for* us as a possession.' ²⁵ Therefore say to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "You eat blood in your meat, and you raise your eyes to your idols and you pour out blood, and yet you want to take possession of the land?* ²⁶ You rely on your sword, you do a detestable thing, and _⌊each man defiles_⌋* the wife of his neighbor, and yet you want to take possession of the land?" '* ²⁷ "Thus you must say to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "_⌊As I live_⌋,* _⌊surely_⌋* whoever is in the ruins, by the sword they will fall, and whoever is on the surface of the open field, I will give him to the animals* to eat him, and whoever is in the stronghold and in the cave, they will die by the plague. ²⁸ And I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland, and the pride of its strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will be desolate _⌊with no one traveling through them_⌋." '* ²⁹ And they will know that I am Yahweh when I make my land a desolation and a wasteland, because of all of their detestable things that they have done.

¹⁶ "All of the people of the land shall join in* to this contribution with* the prince in Israel.

¹⁴ Jair the descendant* of Manasseh acquired the whole region of Argob, up to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he called it,* that is Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, _⌊as it still is today_⌋.*

⁵ and ruled over Mount Hermon and Salecah and over all Bashan up to the border of the Geshurites* and the Maacathites,* and half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

⁶ When the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* saw that they had become odious to David, the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* sent word and hired Aram Beth-Rehob and Aram-Zobah, twenty thousand infantry; and they also hired the king of Maacah, a thousand men, and the men of Tob, twelve thousand men.

⁸ The _⌊Ammonites_⌋* came out and _⌊drew up a battle formation_⌋* at the entrance of the gate, but Aram-Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were alone in the open field.

²⁸ Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite, ²⁹ Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai from Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin,

³⁴ Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,

²³ When all of the commanders of the troops heard, they and the men, that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seriah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

²⁵ But it happened in the seventh month that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama from the offspring of the kingship came, and ten men with him, and they struck down Gedaliah so that he died with the Judeans and with the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah.

⁴⁸ Maacah, the concubine of Caleb, gave birth to Sheber and Tirhanah.

⁵⁴ The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Ataroth-Beth-Joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites.

³⁰ Maharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite,

² They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah.
The number of the men of the people of Israel:

²² the men of Netophah, fifty-six;

²⁶ The men of Bethlehem and Netophah, one hundred and eighty-eight.

¹⁵ And the officials were angry at Jeremiah and they struck him. And they put him in _⌊prison_⌋,* in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for they had converted it to the _⌊prison_⌋*.

²⁰ Now then, my lord the king, please let my plea fall _⌊before you_⌋.* You must not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, so that I will not die there."

²⁶ Then you shall say to them, 'I was presenting my plea _⌊before_⌋* the king, to not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan to die there.'"

⁶ So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah and stayed with him in the midst of the people who were left in the land.

¹¹ And also all the Judeans who were in Moab, and among the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and in Edom, and who were in all the lands, when they heard that the king of Babylon had given a remnant to Judah and that he had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, in an official position over them, ¹² then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they were scattered. ¹¹ When Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, heard* all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, ¹² then they took all the men and went to fight against Ishmael the son of Nethaniah. And they met him at the great pool that is in Gibeon. ¹³ _⌊And then_⌋,* the moment that all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, they were glad. ¹⁴ So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and returned and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. ¹⁵ But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped with eight men _⌊from_⌋* Johanan, and they went to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ¹⁶ Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him took from Mizpah all the rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, strong men, _⌊soldiers_⌋,* and women, and little children, and eunuchs whom he brought back from Gibeon.

¹ Then all the commanders of the armies, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the smallest to the greatest, approached

⁸ And he summoned Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, and all the people from the smallest to the greatest,

² Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the insolent men spoke,* saying to Jeremiah, "You are telling a lie! Yahweh our God did not send you, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'You must not go to Egypt to dwell as aliens there.'

⁵ But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took* all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been scattered to dwell as aliens in the land of Judah—

¹⁵ He saw a resting place that was good, and land that was pleasant. So he bowed his shoulder to the burden and became a servant of forced labor.

¹⁶ So Jonathan _⌊made a covenant_⌋* with the house of David, saying, "May Yahweh _⌊call the enemies of David to account_⌋."* ¹⁷ And Jonathan again made David swear an oath, because he loved him; for with the love of his soul he loved him.

²⁴ Gedaliah swore to them and to their men, and he said to them, "You must not be afraid because of the Chaldeans. Settle in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and may it go well with you."

³ Trust Yahweh and do good. Abide in the land and feed on faithfulness.*

² You will indeed eat of the labor of your hands; you will be happy and it will be well with you.

¹¹ But the nation that will bring its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and will serve him, yet will I leave it on its land," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and they will till it, and they will live in it." '"

¹⁷ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, 'If only you will go surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then _⌊you_⌋* will live, and this city will not be burned with fire, and you will live, you and your house. ¹⁸ But if you do not go surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire, and you will not escape from their hand.'" ¹⁹ And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest they give me into their hand and they abuse me." ²⁰ And Jeremiah said, "They will not give you over. Please obey the voice of Yahweh with regard to what I am saying to you, and it will go well with you, and _⌊you_⌋* will live.

³⁸ Joshua, the son of Nun, _⌊your assistant_⌋,* will go there; encourage him because he will cause Israel to inherit it.

¹ Now David passed a little from beyond the summit, and suddenly Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth was there to meet him with a pair of saddled donkeys; on them were two hundred loaves of bread and a hundred raisin cakes, with a hundred summer fruits and a skin of wine.

²⁹ A man who is skillful in his work, you shall see: before kings, he will serve; he will not serve before the commoners.

⁹ Therefore I weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah. I drench you with my tears,* Heshbon and Elealeh, for a jubilant shout has fallen over your summer fruit and harvest.

¹⁹ _⌊therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: 'A man will not be cut off for Jonadab, the son of Rechab, to stand _⌊before me_⌋* _⌊always_⌋.'"*

¹² then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they were scattered. And they came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and they gathered wine and summer fruit that yielded _⌊in great abundance_⌋.*

³² More than the weeping of Jazer I weep for you, O vine Sibmah. Your branches cross over the sea, up to the sea of Jazer they reach. Upon your summer fruit and upon your vintage the destroyer has fallen.

¹ Woe is me! For I have become like the gatherings of summer, like the gleanings of the grape harvest, when there is no cluster of grapes to eat or early ripened fruit that my soul desires.

³⁶ But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man."

⁸ So Esau dwelled in the hill country of Seir (Esau, that is Edom).

¹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out, and they encamped on the desert-plateau of Moab, across from Jericho beyond the Jordan.

¹ When Israel dwelled in Shittim, the people began to prostitute* themselves with the daughters of Moab.

¹ Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "_⌊Make a treaty with us_⌋* and we will serve you."

¹² "And when you saw that Nahash, the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* was coming against you, you said to me, 'No! A king shall reign over us,' although Yahweh your God is your king.

⁴ Let my outcasts of Moab dwell as aliens among you; be a hiding place for them from the presence of the destroyer." When the oppressor is no more, destruction has stopped, the _⌊one who tramples has_⌋* disappeared from the land,

⁹ And I will make them as a terror, an evil to all the kingdoms of the earth, as a disgrace and a proverb, as a taunt and a curse, in all the places where I will drive them.

³ And you must take from these a few in number, and you must tuck them in your hem.

¹² A third of you will die because of the plague, and because of the famine they will perish in the midst of you, and a third will fall through the sword around you, and a third I will scatter to every direction of the wind, and I will draw the sword behind them.

² "Son of man,* set your face toward the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and prophesy against them,

⁶ For thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Because of clapping your hand and stamping with your foot, and because you rejoiced in* yourself with all of your malice over the land of Israel,

⁸ Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Because of Moab and Seir saying, 'The house of Judah is like all of the nations,'

¹² Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Because of the doings of Edom in avenging himself with vengeance for* the house of Judah, and so they became very guilty and* they avenged themselves on them,"

⁵ because there has been to you _⌊an ancient hostility_⌋,* and you handed over the _⌊Israelites_⌋* to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of _⌊their final punishment_⌋.*

¹⁵ _⌊Like your rejoicing over the inheritance of the house of Israel_⌋* _⌊because_⌋* it was desolate, I will do to you; you will be a desolation, mountain of Seir and all of Edom, indeed all of it; and they will know that I am Yahweh.'" '

¹¹ On _⌊the day you stood nearby_⌋,* _⌊on the day strangers took_⌋* his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them. ¹² But you should not have gloated* over your brother's day, on the day of his misfortune, and you should not have rejoiced over the _⌊people_⌋* of Judah on the day of their perishing, and you should not have opened your mouth wide on the day of distress. ¹³ You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their disaster. You also should not have gloated over his misery on the day of his disaster, and you should not have stretched out your hands on the day of his disaster. ¹⁴ And you should not have stood at the crossroads to cut off his fugitives and you should not have handed over his survivors on the day of distress.

⁸ then they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan, and Jehonathan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

¹ Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "_⌊Make a treaty with us_⌋* and we will serve you." ² But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition _⌊I will make a treaty_⌋* with you, by gouging out the right eye of each of you, so that I can make it a disgrace for all Israel." ³ So the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Leave us alone for seven days so that we may send messengers in all the territory of Israel, and if there is no deliverer for us, then we will come out to you."

¹ _⌊Afterwards the king of the Ammonites died_⌋,* and his son Hanun ruled in his place. ² David said, "I will show loyal love with Hanun, the son of Nahash, as his father showed loyal love with me." So David sent to console him concerning his father, by the hand of his servants. And the servants of David came to the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ³ But the commanders of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* said to Hanun their master, "_⌊In your opinion_⌋,* is David honoring your father because he has sent condolences to you? Is it not in order to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it that David sent his servants to you?" ⁴ Then Hanun took the servants of David, and he shaved off half of their beards and cut their garments off in the middle up to their buttocks, then sent them away. ⁵ When they told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, "Remain in Jericho until your beards have grown, and then you can return." ⁶ When the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* saw that they had become odious to David, the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* sent word and hired Aram Beth-Rehob and Aram-Zobah, twenty thousand infantry; and they also hired the king of Maacah, a thousand men, and the men of Tob, twelve thousand men.

²³ Like _⌊impure silver_⌋* which overlays an earthen vessel, so are smooth lips and an evil heart*. ²⁴ On his lips, an enemy will pretend, but _⌊inside_⌋* he will harbor deceit. ²⁵ When he makes his voice gracious, do not believe him, for seven abominations are in his heart. ²⁶ Though hatred is covered with guile, its evil will be exposed in the assembly.

¹⁰ Though the wicked person is shown compassion, he does not learn righteousness;
he acts unjustly in the land of uprightness, and he does not see the majesty of Yahweh.

²¹ Edom, and Moab, and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;*

¹⁰ Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, the daughters of the king and all the people who were left at Mizpah, over whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. And Ishmael took them captive and set out to cross over to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.*

¹ Concerning the _⌊Ammonites_⌋:* Thus says Yahweh,
"Are there no sons for Israel? Or is there no heir for him? Why has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people dwelled in its towns? ² _⌊Therefore_⌋* look, days are coming," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and I will sound against Rabbah, the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* the alarm of the war, and it will become as a mound of desolation, and its daughters will burn in the fire. Then Israel will dispossess his dispossessors," says Yahweh. ³ "Wail, Heshbon, for Ai is devastated. Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah, put on sackcloth. Lament and run back and forth among the walls. For Milcom will go into exile, his priests and his officials together. ⁴ Why do you boast in your valleys? Your valleys* are ebbing. O unfaithful daughter, who trusted in her treasures, who said, 'Who will come against me?' ⁵ Look, I am going to bring dread on you," _⌊declares_⌋* Lord Yahweh of hosts, "from all your surrounding neighbors. And you will be scattered, each one _⌊before it_⌋,* and there is no one who gathers the fugitives.* ⁶ Yet _⌊afterward_⌋* I will restore the fortunes* of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

² "Son of man,* set your face toward the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and prophesy against them, ³ and you must say to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* 'Hear the word of the Lord Yahweh! Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Because of your saying, 'Ah!' to my sanctuary when it was profaned, and to the land of Israel when it was* desolate, and to the house of Judah when they went into the exile, ⁴ therefore look! I am giving you to the people* of the East as a possession, and they will set up their encampments in you, and they will make in you their dwelling places; _⌊they themselves_⌋* will eat your fruit and _⌊they themselves_⌋* will drink your milk. ⁵ And I will make Rabbah as a pasture of camels and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* as a haunt of flocks, and they will know that I am Yahweh." '" ⁶ For thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Because of clapping your hand and stamping with your foot, and because you rejoiced in* yourself with all of your malice over the land of Israel,

¹³ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Ammon and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their territory! ¹⁴ So I will kindle a fire against the wall of Rabbah and it will devour its citadel fortresses with a war cry on the day of battle, with a storm on the day of the violent tempest. ¹⁵ And their king will go into exile, he and his commanders together," says Yahweh.

⁵ Do not put faith in a friend; put no trust in a close friend. Guard the doorways of your mouth from the one who lies in your lap.

⁵ it does not behave dishonorably, it _⌊is not selfish_⌋*, it does not become angry, it does not keep a record of wrongs, ⁶ it does not rejoice at unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth, ⁷ bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

⁴ And David's men said to him, "Look, today is the day about which Yahweh said to you, 'See, I am giving your enemy* into your hand, and you can do to him _⌊whatever seems good to you_⌋.'"* So David got up and secretly cut the hem of Saul's robe.

⁸ Then Abishai said to David, "God has handed over your enemy into your hand today! So then, _⌊please let me pin him to the ground with the spear_⌋* _⌊one time_⌋,* and _⌊I will not strike him twice_⌋."*

³ Then the troops said, "You will not go out, for _⌊if we must flee_⌋,* then _⌊they will not care about us_⌋;* even if half of us die, _⌊they will not care about us_⌋,* but now, you are like ten thousand of us. And so then, it is better for us that you be in the city to help."

¹⁷ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and he attacked the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, "You shall not go out with us any longer to the battle, so that you do not quench the lamp of Israel."

³¹ _⌊Have the people of my tent not said_⌋,* '_⌊O that_⌋* someone* had not been satisfied with his meat'?

³ But you, O Yahweh, you know me, you see me, and you test that my heart is with you. Tear them apart like sheep for the slaughtering, and set them apart for the day of slaughter. ⁴ _⌊How long_⌋* will the land mourn, and the vegetation of every field dry up, because of the wickedness of those who live in it? The animals and the birds* are swept away, because they have said, "He does not see our future."

² and said to Jeremiah the prophet, "May our plea please fall _⌊before you_⌋,* and pray for us to Yahweh your God, for all this remnant, for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes are seeing us.

⁵⁰ Nor do you consider that it is profitable for you that one man should die for the people, and the whole nation not perish."

¹⁶ "Behold, I am sending you out like sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. ¹⁷ But beware of people, because they will hand you over to councils, and they will flog you in their synagogues.

⁸ And why not (as we are slandered, and as some affirm that we say), "Let us do evil, in order that good may come of it? Their* condemnation is just!
