⁶ And Abram traveled through the land up to the place of Shechem, to the Oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time. ⁷ And Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." And he built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.

¹⁸ And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem which is in the land of Canaan, _⌊on his way_⌋* from Paddan-Aram. And he camped before the city. ¹⁹ And he bought a piece of land where he pitched his tent for one hundred pieces of money* from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem. ²⁰ And there he erected an altar and called it "El Elohe Israel."*

²⁹ "And it will happen that when Yahweh your God has brought you to _⌊the land that you are going to_⌋,* to take possession of it, then* you shall pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.

⁵ _⌊But only_⌋* to the place that Yahweh your God will choose from all of your tribes to place his name there as his dwelling shall you seek, and there you shall go. ⁶ And you shall bring there your burnt offerings and your sacrifices and your tithes and _⌊your donations_⌋* and your votive gifts and your freewill offerings and the firstling of your herd and your flock. ⁷ And you shall eat there _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice _⌊in all your endeavors_⌋,* you and your family in which Yahweh your God has blessed you. ⁸ "You must not do just as we are doing here _⌊today_⌋,* _⌊each according to all that is right in his eyes_⌋.* ⁹ For you have not come up to now to the resting place and to the inheritance that Yahweh your God is giving to you. ¹⁰ But you will cross the Jordan, and you will settle in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give rest to you from all your enemies from all around, and you will live securely, ¹¹ _⌊and then_⌋* at the place that Yahweh your God will choose, to let his name dwell there, there you shall bring all the things I am commanding you, your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and _⌊your donations_⌋,* and all of the choice things, your votive gifts that you vow to Yahweh.

¹² "These tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people _⌊when you cross_⌋* the Jordan: Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Joseph and Benjamin.

³³ Then all Israel, _⌊foreigner as well as native_⌋,* with the elders, officials, and judges stood _⌊on either side_⌋* of the ark before the priests and the Levites, who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh. Half of them stood in front of Mount Gerizim, and the other half in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses Yahweh's servant had commanded before to bless the people of Israel. ³⁴ And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings* and the curses,* according to all that was written in the scroll of the law. ³⁵ There was not a word from all that Moses commanded that Joshua did not read before the assembly of all Israel, and the women, the little children, and the traveling foreigners* among them.

⁶ All the lords of Shechem and Beth-Millo gathered, and they went and made Abimelech as king, near the oak* of the pillar that is at Shechem. ⁷ And they told Jotham, and he went up and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and _⌊he cried out loud_⌋* and said to them, "Listen to me, lords of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.

³ Yahweh said to him, "I have heard your prayer and your plea which you have made before me. I have consecrated this house which you have built, by putting my name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.

²⁶ So they said to the king of Assyria, "The nations whom you deported and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the customs of the God of the land, so he sent lions among them, and now they are killing them because they do not know the customs of the God of the land." ²⁷ Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, "Release one of the priests whom you deported from there, and let him go and settle there. Let him teach them the customs of the God of the land." ²⁸ So one of the priests went, whom they had deported from Samaria, and he settled in Bethel and was teaching them how they should fear Yahweh. ²⁹ Yet every nation was making their* gods, and they put them in the shrine of the high places that the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities in which they were living. ³⁰ The men of Babylonia made Succoth Benoth; the men of Cush made Nergal; the men of Hamath made Ashima. ³¹ The Arvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; the Sepharvites were burning their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech the gods of Sepharvaim. ³² Those who were fearing Yahweh made priests of the high places _⌊from among themselves_⌋,* and they were sacrificing for them in the shrines of the high places. ³³ Yahweh they were fearing, but their gods they were serving, according to the customs of the nations from which they were deported.

²⁶ Then David built an altar there to Yahweh, and he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and he called to Yahweh. And he answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering.

¹ Then David said, "This will be the house of Yahweh God, and this altar of burnt offering for Israel."

⁶ But I have chosen my name to be there in Jerusalem, and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.'

¹² Then Yahweh appeared to Solomon at night and said to him, "I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.

¹⁶ And now I have chosen and consecrated this house for my name to be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there _⌊for all time_⌋.*

⁶⁸ but chose the tribe of Judah, _⌊Mount Zion_⌋* that he loved.

His foundation is on the holy mountains. ² Yahweh loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

¹³ For Yahweh has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his habitation.

⁵³ And they did not welcome him because _⌊he was determined to go_⌋* to Jerusalem.
