¹ And as he* went away, he saw a man blind from birth. ² And his disciples asked him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?" ³ Jesus replied, "Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but it happened* so that the works of God could be revealed in him. ⁴ It is necessary for us to do the deeds of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work! ⁵ While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." ⁶ When he* had said these things, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes. ⁷ And he said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "sent"). So he went and washed and came back seeing. ⁸ Then the neighbors and those who saw him previously (because he was a beggar) began to say,* "Is this man not the one who used to sit and beg?" ⁹ Others were saying, "It is this man"; others were saying, "No, but he is like him." That one was saying, "I am he!" ¹⁰ So they began to say* to him, "How* were your eyes opened?" ¹¹ He replied, "The man who is called Jesus made clay and smeared it* on my eyes and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash!' So I went, and I washed, and* I received sight." ¹² And they said to him, "Where is that man?" He said, "I do not know." ¹³ They brought him—the one formerly blind—to the Pharisees. ¹⁴ (Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes was the Sabbath.) ¹⁵ So the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received sight. And he said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see." ¹⁶ So some of the Pharisees were saying, "This man is not from God, because he does not observe the Sabbath!" Others* were saying, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" And there was a division among them. ¹⁷ So they said to the blind man again, "What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a prophet." ¹⁸ So the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and received sight, until they summoned the parents of the one* who received sight. ¹⁹ And they asked them, saying, "Is this man your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?" ²⁰ So his parents answered and said, "We know that this man is our son, and that he was born blind. ²¹ But how he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him! _⌊He is a mature adult_⌋;* he will speak for himself!" ²² (His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already decided that if anyone should confess him to be Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. ²³ Because of this his parents said, "_⌊He is a mature adult_⌋;* ask him.") ²⁴ So they summoned the man who had been blind for the second time and said to him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner!" ²⁵ Then that man replied, "Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I know—that although I* was blind, now I see!" ²⁶ So they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" ²⁷ He replied to them, "I told you already and you did not listen! Why do you want to hear it* again? You do not want to become his disciples also, do you?"* ²⁸ They reviled* him and said, "You are his disciple! But we are disciples of Moses! ²⁹ We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from." ³⁰ The man answered and said to them, "For the remarkable thing is this, that you do not know where he is from, and he opened my eyes! ³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if someone is devout and does his will, he listens to this one. ³² From _⌊time immemorial_⌋* it has not been heard that someone opened the eyes of one born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything!" ³⁴ They answered and said to him, "You were born completely in sin, and are you attempting to teach* us?" And they threw him out. ³⁵ Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" ³⁶ He answered and said, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" ³⁷ Jesus said to him, "You have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you." ³⁸ And he said, "I believe, Lord!" and he worshiped him. ³⁹ And Jesus said,* "For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind!" ⁴⁰ Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, "We are not also blind, are we?"* ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

⁵ You will not bow down to them, and you will not serve them, because I am Yahweh your God, a jealous God, punishing the guilt of the parents on the children on the third and on the fourth generations* of those hating me,

¹⁴ And they said, _⌊Some_⌋* say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

⁷ and the greetings in the marketplaces and to be called 'Rabbi' by people.

² And he answered and* said to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were sinners worse than all the Galileans, because they suffered these things?

³⁴ They answered and said to him, "You were born completely in sin, and are you attempting to teach* us?" And they threw him out.

⁴ And when the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying* to one another, "Doubtless this man is a murderer whom, although he* was rescued from the sea, Justice* has not permitted to live!"

⁸ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil." ⁹ Then* Satan* answered Yahweh and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? ¹⁰ Have you* not put a fence around him and his household and around _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* _⌊on every side_⌋?* You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock* has increased in the land. ¹¹ But,* on the other hand, stretch out* your hand and touch _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face." ¹² So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "Look, _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* is in your _⌊power_⌋.* Only do not stretch out your hand _⌊against_⌋* him." So* Satan* went out from Yahweh's _⌊presence_⌋.*

³ So* Yahweh _⌊asked_⌋* Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil. And still he persists in his blamelessness _⌊even though_⌋* you incited me against him to destroy him for nothing." ⁴ Then* Satan* answered him and said, "Skin for skin! All that _⌊that_⌋* man has he will give for his life. ⁵ But stretch out* your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."* ⁶ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "_⌊All right_⌋,* he is in your _⌊power_⌋.* Only spare his life."

²⁷ "Look, I know your* thoughts and the schemes you devise against me.

⁵ Is not your wickedness great, and there is no end to your iniquities? ⁶ "Indeed, you have required a pledge from your family for nothing, and you have stripped off the clothes of the naked. ⁷ You have given no water for the weary to drink, and you withheld food from the hungry. ⁸ And the land _⌊belongs to the man of power_⌋,* and _⌊the favored_⌋* lives in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans were crushed. ¹⁰ Therefore trapping nets are all around you, and panic suddenly terrifies you, ¹¹ or it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you. ¹² "Is not God in the height of the heavens? But* see how lofty are _⌊the highest stars_⌋.* ¹³ And you ask, 'What does God know? Can he judge through deep gloom? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he does not see; and he walks about on the dome of heaven.' ¹⁵ Will you keep to the way of old that the people of mischief have trod, ¹⁶ who were snatched away _⌊before their time_⌋,* whose foundation was washed away by a current? ¹⁷ Those who said to God, 'Turn away from us,' and 'What can Shaddai do to us?' ¹⁸ Yet* he himself* filled up their houses with good things, but* the schemes of the wicked are repugnant to me. ¹⁹ The righteous see, and they rejoice, but* the innocent one mocks at them. ²⁰ _⌊Surely_⌋* our foe perishes, and fire has consumed their remainder.* ²¹ "Please reconcile yourself with him, and be at peace; _⌊in this way_⌋,* good will come to you. ²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and place his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to Shaddai, you will be restored; if you remove wickedness from your tent, ²⁴ and if you put gold ore in the dust, and the gold of Ophir in the rock of wadis, ²⁵ then* Shaddai will be your gold ore and _⌊your precious silver_⌋.* ²⁶ Indeed, then you will delight yourself in Shaddai, and _⌊you will expect that God will be good to you_⌋.* ²⁷ You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows. ²⁸ And you will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways. ²⁹ When they are humiliated, _⌊you say_⌋,* 'It is pride,' for* he saves _⌊the humble_⌋.* ³⁰ He will deliver the guilty, and he will escape because of the cleanness of your hands."

³ and _⌊he became angry_⌋* at his three friends because they had not found an answer, and they had declared Job guilty.

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.

¹ So all this I laid to my heart, and I concluded* that the righteous and the wise, as well as their deeds, are in the hand of God. So no one knows anything that will come to them, whether it will be love or hatred. ² The same fate comes to everyone:
to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked,* to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As with the good man, so also to the sinner; as with those who swear an oath, so also those who fear oaths.

⁵ the blind receive sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor have good news announced to them.*

² And he answered and* said to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were sinners worse than all the Galileans, because they suffered these things? ³ No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will all perish as well! ⁴ Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think that they were sinners worse than all the people who live in Jerusalem? ⁵ No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all perish as well!"

⁴ And when he* heard it,* Jesus said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if not, believe because of the works themselves. ¹² Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in me, the works that I am doing he will do also, and he will do greater works* than these because I am going to the Father. ¹³ And _⌊whatever_⌋* you ask in my name, I will do this, in order that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

²¹ So after* threatening them* further, they released them, finding no way to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might; for in Sheol—where you are going—no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything.

¹⁸ For Sheol cannot praise you; death cannot praise you. Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness. ¹⁹ The living, the living one praises you like me today; a father will make your faithfulness known to children.

³² And he said to them, "Go and* tell that fox, 'Behold, I am expelling demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.'* ³³ Nevertheless, it is necessary for me to be on the way today and tomorrow and on the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem. ³⁴ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together _⌊the way_⌋* a hen gathers* her own brood under her* wings, and you were not willing!

³⁴ Jesus said to them, "My food is that I do the will of the one who sent me and complete his work.

¹⁹ So Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing from himself except what he sees the Father doing. For whatever that one does, these things also the Son does likewise.

³⁶ "But I have a testimony greater than John's, for the works which the Father has given to me that I should complete them—the very works which I am doing—these testify about me, that the Father has sent me.

³² Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good deeds from the Father. For which one of them are you going to stone me?"

³⁷ If I do not do the deeds of my Father, do not believe me.

⁹ Jesus replied, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks around in the daylight, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if anyone walks around in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

³⁵ So Jesus said to them, "Yet a little time the light is with you! Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness does not overtake you! And the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

⁴ I have glorified you on earth by* completing the work that you have given me _⌊to do_⌋.*

²⁰ For we are not able to refrain from speaking about the things that we have seen and heard."

¹⁰ So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the household of faith.

¹⁶ making the most of the time because the days are evil.

⁵ Live with wisdom toward those outside, making the most of the time.

⁶ "I am Yahweh; I have called you in righteousness, and I have grasped your hand and watched over you; and I have given you as a covenant of the people, as a light of the nations, ⁷ to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoner out from the dungeon, those who sit in darkness from the house of imprisonment.

⁶ And he says, "It is trivial _⌊for you to be_⌋* a servant for me,
to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel. I will give you as a light to the nations, to be my salvation to the end of the earth."

¹ "Arise, shine! For your light has come, and the glory of Yahweh has risen on you. ² For look! darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples, but* Yahweh will rise on you, and his glory will appear over you. ³ And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the bright light of your sunrise.

² But for you who revere* my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like _⌊fattened calves_⌋.*

¹⁶ the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, and the ones who sit in the land and shadow of death, a light has dawned on them."*

³² a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory to your people Israel."

⁴ In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity.* ⁵ And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome* it. ⁶ A man came, sent from God, _⌊whose name was_⌋* John. ⁷ This one came for a witness, in order that he could testify about the light, so that all would believe through him. ⁸ That one was not the light, but came* in order that he could testify about the light. ⁹ The true light, who gives light to every person, was coming into the world.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment: that the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For everyone who practices evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed. ²¹ But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, in order that his deeds may be revealed, that they are done in God.

¹² Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world! The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

³⁵ So Jesus said to them, "Yet a little time the light is with you! Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness does not overtake you! And the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. ³⁶ While you have the light, believe in the light, in order that you may become sons of light." Jesus said these things, and then he went away and* was hidden from them.

⁴⁶ I have come as a light into the world, in order that everyone who believes in me will not remain in the darkness.

⁴⁷ For so the Lord has commanded us:
'I have appointed you _⌊to be_⌋* a light for the Gentiles, _⌊that you would bring_⌋* salvation to the end of the earth.'*

¹⁸ to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

²³ that the Christ* was to suffer and that as the first of the resurrection from the dead, he was going to proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles."

¹⁴ for everything made visible is light. Therefore it says,
Wake up, sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.*

²³ And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon, that they shine on it, for the glory of God illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

³³ And he took him away from the crowd by himself and* put his fingers into his ears, and after* spitting, he touched his tongue.

²³ And he took hold of the blind man's hand and* led him outside the village, and after* spitting in his eyes, he placed his hands on him and* asked him, "Do you see anything?"

¹⁸ I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire, in order that you may become rich, and white clothing, in order that you may be clothed and the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed, and eye salve to smear on your eyes, in order that you may see.

¹¹ And Yahweh said to him, "Who gave a mouth to humankind, or who makes mute or deaf or sighted or blind? Is it not I, Yahweh?

¹⁰ Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go, you must wash seven times in the Jordan, then your flesh shall return to you, and you shall be clean." ¹¹ But Naaman became angry and he went and said, "Look, I said to myself, 'Surely he will come out, stand, call upon the name of Yahweh his God, and wave his hands over the spot; then he would take away the skin disease.' ¹² Are not the Abana and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all of the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them that I may be clean?" Then he turned and left in anger. ¹³ But his servants came near and spoke to him and said, "My father, if the prophet had spoken a difficult thing to you to do, would you not have done it? Why not even when he says to you, 'Wash and you shall be clean'?" ¹⁴ So he went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh returned as the flesh of a small boy, and he was clean.

¹⁵ Shallun son of Col-Hozeh, the commander of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate. He rebuilt it and covered it and erected its doors, its bolts, its bars, and he built the wall of the Pool of Shelah of the king's garden, right up to the steps going down from the city of David.

⁸ Yahweh opens the eyes of the blind; Yahweh raises up those bowed down; Yahweh loves the righteous;

⁶ "Because this people has refused the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah,

¹⁸ And on that day, the deaf shall hear the words of a scroll, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of gloom and darkness. ¹⁹ And the meek _⌊have joy after joy_⌋* in Yahweh, and the needy of the people shall rejoice in the holy one of Israel.

³ And the eyes of those who see will not gaze,* and the ears of those who hear will listen.

⁵ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be opened.

⁷ to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoner out from the dungeon, those who sit in darkness from the house of imprisonment.

¹⁶ And I will lead the blind by a road they do not know; I will cause them to tread on paths they have not known. I will make darkness _⌊in their presence_⌋* into light and rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them. ¹⁷ They shall turn back; they shall be _⌊greatly ashamed_⌋,* those who trust in an image, who say to a cast image, "You are our gods." ¹⁸ Deaf people, listen! And blind people, look to see!

⁸ Bring out the people blind yet* with eyes, and deaf, though* they have ears.

⁴ Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think that they were sinners worse than all the people who live in Jerusalem?

¹¹ He replied, "The man who is called Jesus made clay and smeared it* on my eyes and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash!' So I went, and I washed, and* I received sight."

³⁹ And Jesus said,* "For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind!"

³⁶ do you say about he whom the Father set apart and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?

³⁷ But some of them said, "Was not this man who opened the eyes of the blind able to do something* so that this man also would not have died?"

³ For what was impossible for the law, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did. By* sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

⁴ But when the fullness of time came, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

¹⁹ So the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. _⌊And when they came_⌋* to Bethlehem, all of the town was stirred because of them. And they said, "Is this Naomi?"

⁸ He raises up the poor from the dust. From the ash heap he lifts up the needy, to cause them to sit with noble people and to cause them to inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth belong to Yahweh and he has set the inhabited world on them.

¹¹ The servants of Achish said to him, "Is not this David the king of the land? Is it not for this one that they sang in the dances, saying, 'Saul killed his thousands, but David his ten thousands?'"

⁴⁶ And they came to Jericho. And as* he was setting out from Jericho along with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road.

²⁰ And a certain poor man _⌊named_⌋* Lazarus, covered with sores, lay at his gate, ²¹ and was longing to be filled with what fell from the table of the rich man. But even the dogs came and* licked his sores. ²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels to _⌊Abraham's side_⌋.* And the rich man also died and was buried.

³⁵ Now it happened that as he drew near to Jericho, a certain blind man was sitting on the side of the road begging.

² And a certain man was being carried who was lame _⌊from birth_⌋.* _⌊He_⌋* was placed every day at the gate of the temple called "Beautiful," so that he could ask for charitable gifts from those who were going into the temple courts.* ³ When he* saw Peter and John about to go into the temple courts,* he began asking to receive alms. ⁴ And Peter looked intently at him, together with John, and* said, "Look at us!" ⁵ So he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. ⁶ But Peter said, "Silver and gold _⌊I do not possess_⌋,* but what I have, this I give to you—in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!"* ⁷ And taking hold of him by the right hand, he raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. ⁸ And leaping up, he stood and began walking around* and entered into the temple courts* with them, walking and leaping and praising God. ⁹ And all the people saw him walking and praising God, ¹⁰ And they recognized him, that this one* was the one who used to sit asking for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with awe and astonishment at what had happened to him. ¹¹ And while* he was holding fast to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's, utterly astonished.

⁵ Just as you do not know how the path of the wind* goes, nor how the bones of a fetus form in a mother's womb, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.

²⁷ And he sleeps and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—_⌊he does not know how_⌋.*

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can these things be?"

¹⁵ So the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received sight. And he said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."

²¹ But how he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him! _⌊He is a mature adult_⌋;* he will speak for himself!"

²⁶ So they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

³⁵ But someone will say, "How are the dead raised? And with what sort of body do they come?"

¹⁷ Then they asked Baruch, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Tell us please, how did you write all these words, from his mouth?"

⁶ When he* had said these things, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes. ⁷ And he said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "sent"). So he went and washed and came back seeing.

²⁷ He replied to them, "I told you already and you did not listen! Why do you want to hear it* again? You do not want to become his disciples also, do you?"*

¹⁸ And they came to Reuel, their father, and he said, "_⌊Why have you come so quickly_⌋* today?" ¹⁹ And they said, "An Egyptian man delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he even drew water for us and watered the flock." ²⁰ And he said to his daughters, "Where is he? _⌊Why then_⌋* have you left the man? _⌊Call him so that he can eat some food_⌋."*

¹¹ But he answered them, "The one who made me well—that one said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk!'" ¹² So they asked him,* "Who is the man who said to you, 'Pick up your mat* and walk?'" ¹³ But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn while* a crowd was in the place.

¹¹ So the Jews were looking for him at the feast, and were saying, "Where is he?"

³ Now the scribes and the Pharisees brought to him a woman* caught in adultery. And standing her in their midst, ⁴ they said to him, testing him,* "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery! ⁵ Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?" ⁶ (Now they were saying this to test him, so that they would have an occasion* to bring charges against him.) But Jesus, bending down, began to write* with his* finger on the ground, taking no notice.* ⁷ And when they persisted in asking him, straightening up he said* to them, "The one of you without sin, let him throw the first stone at her!" ⁸ And bending down again, he wrote on the ground.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. ⁴⁷ So the chief priests and the Pharisees called together the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs!

⁵⁷ (Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, they should report it,* in order that they could arrest him.)

¹⁹ So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you are accomplishing nothing! Behold, the world has gone after him."

⁴² Yet despite that, even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it,* so that they would not be expelled from the synagogue.

¹ At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath. And his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck off heads of grain and eat them.* ² But when* the Pharisees saw it,* they said to him, "Behold, your disciples are doing what it is not permitted to do on the Sabbath!" ³ So he said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those with him, ⁴ how he entered into the house of God and ate the bread of the presentation, which it was not permitted for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests? ⁵ Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple violate the sanctity of the Sabbath and are guiltless? ⁶ But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here! ⁷ And if you had known what _⌊it means_⌋,* 'I want mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. ⁸ For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath." ⁹ And going on from there he came into their synagogue. ¹⁰ And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand, and they asked him, saying, "Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath?" in order that they could accuse him. ¹¹ But he said to them, "What man will there be among you who will have one sheep and if this one fell into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it* out? ¹² Then to what degree is a man worth more than a sheep? So then, it is permitted to do good on the Sabbath." ¹³ Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand," and he stretched it* out, and it was restored as healthy as the other one. ¹⁴ But the Pharisees went out _⌊and plotted_⌋* against him in order that they could destroy him.

²³ And it happened that he was going through the grain fields on the Sabbath, and his disciples began to make their way while* plucking off the heads of grain.

¹ Now it happened that on a Sabbath he went through the grain fields, and his disciples were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them* in their* hands. ² But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not permitted on the Sabbath? ³ And Jesus answered and* said to them, "Have you not read this, what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry— ⁴ how he entered into the house of God and took the bread of the presentation, which it is not permitted to eat (except the priests alone), and* ate it* and gave it* to those with him?" ⁵ And he said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." ⁶ Now it happened that on another Sabbath he entered into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there, and his right hand was withered. ⁷ So the scribes and the Pharisees were watching closely* to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, in order that they could find a reason* to accuse him. ⁸ But he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Get up and stand in the middle," and he got up and* stood there. ⁹ And Jesus said to them, "I ask you whether it is permitted on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?"* ¹⁰ And after* looking around at them all, he said to him, "Stretch out your hand," and he did, and his hand was restored. ¹¹ But they were filled with fury, and began discussing* with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¹⁰ Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. ¹¹ And behold, a woman was there* who had a spirit _⌊that had disabled her_⌋* for eighteen years, and she was bent over and not able to straighten herself up completely.* ¹² And when he* saw her, Jesus summoned her* and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your disability!" ¹³ And he placed his* hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and glorified God. ¹⁴ But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, answered and* said to the crowd, "There are six days on which it is necessary to work. Therefore come and* be healed on them, and not on the day of the Sabbath!" ¹⁵ But the Lord answered and said to him, "Hypocrites! Does not each one of you untie his ox or his* donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it* away to water it?* ¹⁶ And this woman, who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound _⌊eighteen_⌋* long years—is it not necessary that she be released from this bond on the day of the Sabbath?" ¹⁷ And when* he said these things, all those who opposed him were humiliated, and the whole crowd was rejoicing at all the splendid things that were being done by him.

¹ And it happened that when he came to the house of a certain one of the leaders of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat _⌊a meal_⌋,* they were watching him closely.

⁹ And immediately the man became well and picked up his mat and began to walk.* (Now it was the Sabbath on that day.)

¹⁶ And on account of this the Jews began to persecute* Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, "I performed one work, and you are all astonished. ²² Because of this Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. ²³ If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses would not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole man well* on the Sabbath?

¹⁰ So they began to say* to him, "How* were your eyes opened?" ¹¹ He replied, "The man who is called Jesus made clay and smeared it* on my eyes and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash!' So I went, and I washed, and* I received sight."

²⁶ So they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" ²⁷ He replied to them, "I told you already and you did not listen! Why do you want to hear it* again? You do not want to become his disciples also, do you?"*

² But when* the Pharisees saw it,* they said to him, "Behold, your disciples are doing what it is not permitted to do on the Sabbath!"

³¹ At that same hour some Pharisees came up and* said to him, "Go out and depart from here, because Herod wants to kill you!" ³² And he said to them, "Go and* tell that fox, 'Behold, I am expelling demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.'* ³³ Nevertheless, it is necessary for me to be on the way today and tomorrow and on the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem.

² This man came to him at night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are* a teacher who has come from God, for no one is able to perform these signs that you are performing unless God were with him."

⁵² So the Jews began to quarrel* _⌊among themselves_⌋,* saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

¹² And there was a lot of grumbling concerning him among the crowds; some were saying, "He is a good man," but others were saying, "No, but he deceives the crowd."

⁴³ So there was a division in the crowd because of him.

²⁴ So they summoned the man who had been blind for the second time and said to him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner!"

³⁰ The man answered and said to them, "For the remarkable thing is this, that you do not know where he is from, and he opened my eyes! ³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if someone is devout and does his will, he listens to this one. ³² From _⌊time immemorial_⌋* it has not been heard that someone opened the eyes of one born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything!"

¹⁹ Again there was a division among the Jews because of these words.

¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if not, believe because of the works themselves.

²⁴ If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.

⁴ But the population of the city was divided, and _⌊some_⌋* were with the Jews _⌊and some_⌋* with the apostles.

¹¹ And the crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee!"

¹⁹ And he said to them, "What things?" So they said to him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, a man who was a prophet, powerful in deed and word before God and all the people,

¹⁹ The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet.

¹⁴ Now when* the people saw the sign that he performed, they began to say,* "This one is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world!"

²² "Israelite men, listen to these words! Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—

²² Moses said, 'The Lord God* will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You will listen to him in everything that he says to you.* ²³ And it will be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet will be destroyed utterly from the people.'* ²⁴ And indeed, all the prophets from Samuel and all those who followed him* have spoken about and proclaimed these days. ²⁵ You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God ordained with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed.'* ²⁶ God, after he* had raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning each of you back from your wickedness!"

³⁸ Jesus of Nazareth—how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.

¹⁴ Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who were taking* his daughters and said, "Get up! Go out from this place, because Yahweh is going to destroy the city!" But _⌊it seemed like a joke_⌋* in the eyes of his sons-in-law.

¹¹ Yahweh, though your hand reaches high, they do not see it.
Let them see, and let them be ashamed of the zeal of people. Indeed, let the fire of your enemies consume them.

¹ Who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?

³¹ But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone rises from the dead.'"

¹⁹ And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent* priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, "Who are you?"

⁴⁴ How are you able to believe, if you* accept glory from one another, and do not seek the glory which is from the only God?

²² (His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already decided that if anyone should confess him to be Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue.

³⁷ But as many signs as he had performed before them, they did not believe in him, ³⁸ in order that the word of the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled, who said,
"Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"* ³⁹ For this reason they were not able to believe, because again Isaiah said, ⁴⁰ "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they see with their* eyes and understand with their* hearts and turn, and I heal them."*

¹⁵ _⌊while it is said_⌋*,
"Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."* ¹⁶ For who, when they* heard it, were disobedient? Surely it was not all who went out from Egypt through Moses? ¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he swear they would not enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

¹¹ Therefore, let us make every effort to enter into that rest, in order that no one may fall in the same pattern of disobedience.

⁸ Then the neighbors and those who saw him previously (because he was a beggar) began to say,* "Is this man not the one who used to sit and beg?" ⁹ Others were saying, "It is this man"; others were saying, "No, but he is like him." That one was saying, "I am he!"

¹⁰ And they recognized him, that this one* was the one who used to sit asking for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with awe and astonishment at what had happened to him.

¹⁴ And because they* saw the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in return.

¹ Of David.*
Yahweh is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the refuge of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ² When evildoers drew near against me to eat my flesh— my adversaries and my enemies who drew near to me— they themselves stumbled and fell.

²⁵ The fear of a person will lay a snare, but he who trusts in Yahweh will be secure.

⁷ Listen to me, you who know righteousness, people who have my teaching in their heart; you must not fear the reproach of men, or be terrified because of their abuse.

¹² "I, I am he who comforts you; who are you that* you are afraid of man? He dies! And of the son of humankind? He is _⌊sacrificed_⌋* as grass!

¹¹ And of whom were you afraid and feared, that you deceived and did not remember me? Did you not place it on your heart? Have I not been silent, even from long ago, and so you do not fear me?

²² Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.

⁴ "And I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after these things do not have anything more to do. ⁵ But I will show you whom you should fear: fear the one who has authority, after the killing, to throw you* into hell! Yes, I tell you, fear this one! ⁶ Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten in the sight of God. ⁷ But even the hairs of your head are all numbered! Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. ⁸ "And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before people, the Son of Man also will acknowledge him before the angels of God, ⁹ but the one who denies me before people will be denied before the angels of God.

⁵⁶ And a certain female slave, seeing him sitting in the light and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him!" ⁵⁷ But he denied it,* saying, "Woman, I do not know him!" ⁵⁸ And after a short time another person saw him and* said, "You also are one of them!" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" ⁵⁹ And after* about one hour had passed, someone else was insisting, saying, "In truth this man also was with him, because he is also a Galilean!" ⁶⁰ But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about!" And immediately, while* he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned around and* looked intently at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord,* how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."

¹³ However, no one was speaking openly about him for fear of the Jews.

⁴⁵ So the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees. And they said to them, "_⌊Why_⌋* did you not bring him?" ⁴⁶ The officers replied, "Never has a man spoken like this!" ⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees replied to them, "You have not also been deceived, have you?* ⁴⁸ _⌊None_⌋* of the rulers or of the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?* ⁴⁹ But this crowd who does not know the law is accursed!" ⁵⁰ Nicodemus, the one who came to him previously—who was one of them—said to them, ⁵¹ "Our law does not condemn a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"* ⁵² They answered and said to him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you?* Investigate and see that a prophet does not arise from Galilee!"
