⁵ When the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* made war with Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob.

⁹ The _⌊Ammonites_⌋* crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was very distressed.

¹⁷ And the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* were summoned,* and they camped in Gilead. And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gathered and camped at Mizpah. ¹⁸ The people, the ones commanding Gilead, _⌊said to each other_⌋,* "Who is the man that will begin to fight against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋?* He will be as head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."

²⁷ However, some _⌊worthless men_⌋* said, "How can this man deliver us?" So they despised him and brought no gift to him, but he kept silent.*

⁶ Then the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and _⌊he became very angry_⌋.* ⁷ So he took a yoke of oxen and cut them into pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, "Whoever is not going out after Saul and after Samuel, so will it be done to his oxen." Then the fear of Yahweh fell on the people and they went out as one man.

¹² Then the people said to Samuel, "Who is the one who asked, 'Will Saul reign over us?' Give the men to us that we may kill them."

²² The stone the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. ²³ This is from Yahweh; it is wonderful in our eyes.

³⁵ This Moses whom they had repudiated, saying, 'Who appointed you a ruler and a judge?'*—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer with _⌊the help_⌋* of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. ³⁶ This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years. ³⁷ "This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, 'God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.'* ³⁸ This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and who with our fathers received living oracles to give to us, ³⁹ to whom our fathers were not willing to become obedient, but rejected him* and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

²⁷ But the foolish things of the world God chose in order that he might put to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world God chose in order that he might put to shame the strong, ²⁸ and the insignificant of the world, and the despised, God chose, the things that are not, in order that he might abolish the things that are, ²⁹ so that all flesh may not boast before God.
