²⁴ And a dispute also occurred among them as to which of them was recognized as being greatest.

²⁰ Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and* kneeling down she asked* something from him. ²¹ And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your kingdom." ²² But Jesus answered and* said, "You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." ²³ He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine* to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." ²⁴ And when* the ten heard this,* they were indignant concerning the two brothers.

³⁴ But they were silent, because they had argued with one another on the way about who was greatest.

³⁷ So they said to him, "Grant to us that we may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory." ³⁸ But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" ³⁹ And they said to him, "We are able." So Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, ⁴⁰ but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared." ⁴¹ And when they* heard this,* the ten began to be indignant about James and John.

⁴⁶ And an argument developed among them as to who of them might be greatest.

¹⁰ being devoted to one another in brotherly love, esteeming one another more highly in honor,

⁴ Love is patient, love is kind, love is not jealous, it does not boast, it does not become conceited,

³ Do nothing according to selfish ambition or according to empty conceit, but in humility considering one another better than yourselves, ⁴ each of you* not looking out for _⌊your own interests_⌋*, but also each of you for _⌊the interests_⌋* of others. ⁵ Think this in* yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

⁵ Or do you think that in vain the scripture says, "The spirit which he caused to dwell in us desires jealously"?* ⁶ But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says,
"God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."*

⁵ In the same way, younger men, be subject to the elders, and all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the right time,
