⁵ But Jesus said to them, "He wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart.

⁶ "So you should understand that it is not because of your righteousness that Yahweh your God is giving you this good land to take possession of it, because _⌊you are a stubborn people_⌋. *

²⁷ For I know your rebellion and your stiff neck even now while I am still alive with you _⌊today_⌋,* rebelling against Yahweh, and _⌊how much more_⌋* after my death.

¹⁶ "But they and our ancestors* acted arrogantly and stiffened their neck and did not listen to your commandments. ¹⁷ They refused to listen and did not remember your wonders that you did among them. They stiffened their neck and in their rebellion _⌊determined_⌋* to return to their slavery. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and compassionate, _⌊slow to anger_⌋,* abundant in loyal love, so you did not abandon them.

²⁶ "But they rebelled and were rebellious against you and cast your law* behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them to turn back to you, and they did great blasphemies.

⁸ He said to them, "Moses, with reference to your hardness of heart, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not like this.

"Today, if you hear his voice, ⁸ do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tested me by trial and saw my works ¹⁰ for forty years. Therefore I was angry with this generation, and I said, 'They always go astray in their heart, and they do not know my ways.'
