¹ A song of ascents.*
"Too often* they have attacked me from my youth." Let Israel say, ² "Too often* they have attacked me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me. ³ On my back plowmen have plowed. They have made their furrows* long." ⁴ Yahweh is righteous. He has cut the ropes* of the wicked. ⁵ Let all be put to shame and repulsed who hate Zion. ⁶ Let them be like grass on the housetops, that withers before it grows up, ⁷ with which a reaper cannot fill his hand, nor the binder of sheaves his _⌊arms_⌋,* ⁸ so that passersby do not say, "The blessing of Yahweh be upon you. We bless you in the name of Yahweh."

¹² And as he oppressed them, so they became many, and so they spread out, and the Egyptians were afraid because of the presence of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ¹³ And the Egyptians ruthlessly compelled the _⌊Israelites_⌋* to work. ¹⁴ And they made their lives bitter with hard work with mortar and with bricks and with all sorts of work in the field—with all their work in which they ruthlessly enslaved them.

²² And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every son who is born you will throw into the Nile, and every daughter you will let live."

⁷ "You must no longer give straw to the people to make the bricks like _⌊before_⌋.* Let them go and gather straw for themselves. ⁸ But the quota of the bricks that they were making _⌊before_⌋* _⌊you must require of them_⌋.* You must not reduce from it, because they are lazy. Therefore they are crying out, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' ⁹ Let the work be heavier on the men so that they will do it and not pay attention to words of deception." ¹⁰ And the slave drivers of the people and their foremen went out, and they spoke to the people, saying, "Thus says Pharaoh, 'I am not giving you straw. ¹¹ You go, get straw for yourselves from whatever you find because not a thing is being reduced from your work.'" ¹² And the people spread out in all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for the straw. ¹³ And the slave drivers were insisting, saying, "Finish your work _⌊for each day_⌋* on its day, as _⌊when there was straw_⌋."* ¹⁴ And the foremen of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* whom Pharaoh's slave drivers had appointed over them, were beaten by men who were saying, "Why have you not completed your portion of brickmaking _⌊as before, both yesterday and today_⌋?"* ¹⁵ And the foremen of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you treat your servants like this? ¹⁶ Straw is not being given to your servants, but they are saying to us, 'Make bricks!' and, look, your servants are being beaten, but it is the fault of* your people." ¹⁷ And he said, "You are lazy, lazy! Therefore you are saying, 'Let us go; let us sacrifice to Yahweh.' ¹⁸ And now go, work, but straw will not be given to you, and you must give the full quota of bricks." ¹⁹ And the foremen of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* saw they were in trouble _⌊with the saying_⌋,* "You will not reduce from your bricks _⌊for each day_⌋* on its day."

¹⁵ _⌊Whenever_⌋* they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them to harm them, just as Yahweh warned, and just as Yahweh had sworn to them. And _⌊they were very distressed_⌋.*

⁸ And _⌊the anger of Yahweh was kindled_⌋* against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Aram Naharaim; and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.

⁸ They crushed and oppressed the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in that year; for eighteen years they crushed all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* who were beyond the Jordan, in the land of the Amorites,* which is in Gilead. ⁹ The _⌊Ammonites_⌋* crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was very distressed. ¹⁰ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals." ¹¹ And Yahweh said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians,* the Amorites,* from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and from the Philistines?* ¹² And when the Sidonians, the Amalekites,* and the Maonites* oppressed you, you cried out to me, and I delivered you from their hand.

¹⁹ Now no skilled craftsman could be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had said, "So that the Hebrews cannot make swords or spears for themselves."

¹ Now the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the _⌊returned exiles_⌋* were building a temple for Yahweh the God of Israel. ² And they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of the _⌊families_⌋,* and they said to them, "Let us build with you. Like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him from the days of Esarhaddon the king of Assyria who brought us up here. ³ But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the _⌊families_⌋* of Israel said to them, "It is not for you but for us to build a house for our God. For we ourselves alone will build it for Yahweh the God of Israel, just as Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us." ⁴ Then the people of the land discouraged _⌊the people of Judah_⌋* and made them afraid to build ⁵ and bribed officials against them to frustrate their plan for all the days of Cyrus king of Persia until the reign of Darius king of Persia. ⁶ In the reign of Ahasuerus, at the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. ⁷ And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their colleagues wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated from Aramaic. ⁸ Rehum the royal officer and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes as follows ⁹ (then Rehum the royal officer, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the envoys, the officials, the Persians, the Erechs, the Babylonians, the Susians (that is the Elamites) ¹⁰ and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and the rest of the province Beyond the River) and now ¹¹ this is the copy of the letter which they sent to him:
"To King Artaxerxes from your servants, the men of the province Beyond the River. And now, ¹² be it known to the king that the Jews who have come up from near you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and wicked city. They are finishing the wall and repairing the foundation. ¹³ Now be it known to the king that if this city is built and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute and toll, and the royal revenue will be reduced. ¹⁴ Now since we eat the salt of the palace and the dishonor of the king is not proper for us to see, we send and make this known to the king, ¹⁵ so that it may be investigated in the book of records of your ancestors.* You will find in the book of records and learn that this city is a rebellious city, hurtful to kings and provinces, and they have rebelled in its midst from ancient times. Because of that this city was destroyed. ¹⁶ We make known to the king that if this city is built and the walls are finished, you will have nothing in the province Beyond the River." ¹⁷ The king sent a reply: "To Rehum the royal officer, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates who live in Samaria and the rest of the province Beyond the River, greetings. And now ¹⁸ the letter that you sent to us has been translated and read before me. ¹⁹ And _⌊I issued_⌋* a decree, and they searched and found that this city from ancient days revolted against kings, and rebellion and sedition has been made in it. ²⁰ Mighty kings have ruled over Jerusalem, governing all the province Beyond the River, to whom tribute, duty, and tax has been given. ²¹ So now, issue forth a decree that these men stop and this city not be built, until a decree is issued from me. ²² And be careful not to be negligent on this matter. Why should damage grow to hurt kings?" ²³ Then when a copy of the letter of King Artaxerxes was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their associates they returned in a hurry to Jerusalem against the Jews and they stopped them by force and power.

In my distress I called to Yahweh, and he answered me.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains; whence will my help come?

"If it had not been Yahweh who was on our side," do let Israel say,

¹ A song of ascents.*
Those who trust in Yahweh are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

When Yahweh restored the fortunes* of Zion,* we were like dreamers.

¹ A song of ascents. Of Solomon.*
Unless Yahweh builds a house, its builders labor at it in vain. Unless Yahweh guards a city, a guard watches in vain.

Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh, who walks in his ways.

¹² Stand, now, in your enchantments, and in your many sorceries with which you have labored from your youth. Perhaps you may be able to benefit; perhaps you may _⌊scare away_⌋.*

² "Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Thus says Yahweh,
"I remember concerning you the loyal love of your childhood,* the love of your betrothal-time, your going* after me in the desert,* in the land not sown.

²¹ I spoke to you _⌊in the times you were secure_⌋,* and you said, 'I will not listen!' This was your way from your youth, for you have not obeyed my voice.

³ Judah has gone into exile with misery and under hard servitude; she lives among the nations, she has not found a resting place; all her pursuers have overtaken her amidst her distress.

³ and they prostituted themselves in Egypt in their childhood; they were prostituting themselves there, and their breasts were fondled, and there they caressed the bosoms of their virginity.

¹⁵ From there I will give her her vineyards, and the Valley of Achor as a doorway of hope. And there she will respond, as in the days of her youth, just as in the day of her coming out of the land of Egypt.

¹ When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

¹⁹ _⌊From_⌋* six troubles he will deliver you, and in seven evil shall not touch you.

¹⁹ Many are the distresses of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

As a deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.

¹³ You pushed me hard* to make me fall, but Yahweh helped me.

¹⁸ And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it!

³³ I have said these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction, but have courage! I have conquered the world."

³⁵ Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction or distress or persecution or hunger or lack of sufficient clothing or danger or the sword? ³⁶ Just as it is written,
"On account of you we are being put to death the whole day long; we are considered as sheep for slaughter."* ³⁷ No, but in all these things we prevail completely through the one who loved us. ³⁸ For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁸ We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; ⁹ persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed;

⁸ And they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them any longer in heaven. ⁹ And the great dragon was thrown down, the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

⁷ As when one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol.

²³ And I will put it in the hand of your tormenters, who have said to _⌊you_⌋,* 'Bow down that* we may _⌊pass_⌋* over you!' And you have _⌊made_⌋* your back like the ground, and like the street for those who _⌊pass_⌋* over you."

¹⁵ Yahweh, God of Israel, you are righteous, for we have been left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this."

³³ You are righteous in everything that has come on us, for you dealt faithfully, and we have acted wickedly.

¹³⁷ You are righteous, O Yahweh, and your ordinances are upright.

⁶ Blessed be Yahweh, who has not made* us prey for their teeth. ⁷ Our soul has escaped like a bird from the snare of fowlers. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

⁵ The proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords. They have spread out a net along the _⌊side_⌋* of the path. They have set snares for me. Selah ⁶ I say to Yahweh, "You are my God." Listen, O Yahweh, to the voice of my supplications. ⁷ O Yahweh, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle. ⁸ Do not grant, O Yahweh, the desires of the wicked. Do not allow them to attain their* plan, lest they be exalted. Selah ⁹ With respect to the head of those who surround me, may the harm of their lips cover them. ¹⁰ Let burning coals fall on them; let them be dropped into the fire, into bottomless pits from which they cannot rise. ¹¹ Do not let a _⌊slanderer_⌋* be established in the land; as for the man of violence, let evil hunt him quickly.

¹⁸ Yahweh is righteous; I have rebelled against _⌊his word_⌋.* Please hear, all the nations, And see my pain; My young women* and young men went into captivity.

²² The loyal love of Yahweh does not cease; his compassions do not come to an end.

⁷ "_⌊Righteousness belongs to you, O Lord_⌋,* and on us is open shame, just as it is this day to the people of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, _⌊those who are near and those who are far off_⌋* in all the lands to which you have driven them,* because of their infidelity which they displayed against you.

¹³ And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends all that had happened to him. And his advisers and Zeresh his wife said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is _⌊from the descendants of the Jews_⌋,* you will not prevail against him, but will certainly fall before him."

⁵ The Jews struck down all their enemies with _⌊the sword_⌋,* killing and destroying them; and they did as they pleased with those that hated them.

¹³ Let them be ashamed; let them perish who are _⌊my adversaries_⌋.* Let them wrap themselves with scorn and disgrace who seek my harm.

⁴ They say, "Come, let us annihilate them from being a nation, so that the name of Israel will be remembered no more." ⁵ For they have consulted together _⌊with a unified purpose_⌋.* They have made a covenant against you: ⁶ the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, ⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre. ⁸ Assyria also has joined with them. They _⌊provide help_⌋* to the children of Lot. Selah ⁹ Do to them as you did with Midian, as with Sisera, as with Jabin at the wadi of Kishon. ¹⁰ They were destroyed at En-dor; they became dung for the ground. ¹¹ Make their leaders like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their chiefs like Zebah and Zalmunna,

⁶ Pray* for the peace of Jerusalem: "May those who love you be at ease.

¹² And this shall happen: when the Lord has finished all his work against _⌊Mount Zion_⌋* and Jerusalem, "I will punish the _⌊arrogance_⌋* of the king of Assyria and _⌊his haughtiness_⌋."*

²² this is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him:
She shows contempt for you; she derides you, virgin daughter of Zion; she shakes her head behind you, daughter of Jerusalem.

²⁸ And I know your sitting down and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging _⌊against_⌋* me. ²⁹ Because you were enraged _⌊against_⌋* me, and your noise* has come up to* my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bridle on your lips, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came.

³⁵ 'And I will defend this city, to save it for my sake and for the sake of David, my servant.'"

¹¹ And now, many nations are gathered against you who are saying, 'Let her be defiled, and let our eyes gaze upon Zion.'

¹⁴ And the angel who was talking with me said to me, "Proclaim, saying, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "_⌊I am very jealous_⌋* for Jerusalem and for Zion! ¹⁵ And _⌊I am extremely angry_⌋* with the nations that are at ease, for while I was a little angry, they _⌊furthered disaster_⌋."* ¹⁶ Therefore, thus says Yahweh: "I have returned to Jerusalem with compassion. My temple* will be built in it," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh of hosts, "and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem." ' ¹⁷ Proclaim again, saying, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "My cities shall again overflow from prosperity, and Yahweh will comfort Zion again, and he will choose Jerusalem again." '"

³ _⌊And then_⌋* on that day I will make Jerusalem a stone weight* for all the peoples. All those lifting it up will grievously hurt themselves, and all the nations of the earth will assemble against it.

⁶ " 'On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a pan of fire among sticks of wood, and like a torch of fire among stalks* of grain, and they will devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, and Jerusalem will be inhabited again in its place, in Jerusalem.

²² If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!*

²⁶ Their inhabitants, short of hand, shall be dismayed; and they shall be ashamed. They have become green plants of the open field, and tender grass, green grass of the roof and blight before the standing grain.

² For like the grass they will dry up quickly, and like green vegetation they will wither.

⁷ When the wicked flourish like grass and all the workers of evil blossom, it is so they can be destroyed forever.

²⁷ And their inhabitants are _⌊weak_⌋;* they are dismayed, and they are ashamed; they have become like plants* of the field, and like greens of grass, like grass on* the roofs and a cultivated field _⌊before_⌋* the standing grain.

⁵ Thus says Yahweh,
"Cursed is the person who trusts in humankind and makes flesh his _⌊strength_⌋,* and turns aside his heart from Yahweh. ⁶ And he will be like a juniper in the wilderness,* and he will not see when good comes, and he will dwell in the parched places in the desert,* in a land of salt flats,* where no one lives.

⁶ But when* the sun rose it was scorched, and because it did not have enough root, it withered.

⁶ He who diligently goes out with weeping, carrying the seed bag, shall certainly come in with rejoicing, carrying his sheaves.

¹⁰ For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and you have not remembered the rock of your refuge; therefore you plant plants of pleasantness, and you _⌊plant_⌋* a vine of a foreigner. ¹¹ On your planting day you make them grow, and in the morning of your sowing you bring them into bloom, yet the harvest will flee* in a day of sickness and incurable pain.

⁷ Because they sow the wind, they will reap the whirlwind. The standing grain does not have heads;* it will not yield flour. And if it would yield, strangers would devour it.

⁸ because the one who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

⁴ And look, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said to the reapers, "May Yahweh be with you." And they said to him, "May Yahweh bless you."

²⁶ Blessed is he who comes in the name of Yahweh. We bless you* from the house* of Yahweh.
