I cry out with my voice to Yahweh; I implore favor with my voice to Yahweh. ² I pour out my complaint before him; I declare my trouble before him. ³ When my spirit faints within me, you know my way. On the path where I walk, they have hidden a trap for me; ⁴ look to my right and see. There is no one looking out for me; there is no escape for me;* no one cares for my soul.* ⁵ I cry out to you, O Yahweh. I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." ⁶ Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low. Deliver me from my pursuers, for they are stronger than I. ⁷ Bring me* out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will encircle me, because you will deal bountifully with me.

¹ David went from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father's household* heard, they came down to him there. ² Every man in distress and every man who had a creditor and every embittered man gathered to him, and he became _⌊their commander_⌋.* Now there were about four hundred men with him.

³ He came to the sheep pens beside the road, and a cave was there. Then Saul went in _⌊to relieve himself_⌋.* Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost part of the cave.

¹⁰ And Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that you would surely bless me and enlarge my border. And may your hand be with me, that you would keep me from evil so that it might not harm me!" And God granted what he asked.

² Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your holy inner sanctuary.

⁸ To you, O Yahweh, I called, and to the Lord I pleaded for grace saying,

O God, by your name save me, and by your power vindicate me.

Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, because in you my soul takes refuge. In the shadow of your wings I will take refuge until destruction passes by.

I cry out with my voice to God; with my voice to God, that he may hear me. ² In the day I have trouble, I seek* the Lord. At night my hand stretches out _⌊continually_⌋;* my soul refuses to be comforted.

I call on you, O Yahweh; hasten to me. Listen to my voice when I call to you.

³⁸ of whom the world was not worthy, wandering about on deserts and mountains and in caves and in holes in the ground.

¹⁵ But Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord. I am a woman _⌊deeply distressed_⌋,* but I have not drunk wine or strong drink. Rather, I have poured out my soul before Yahweh. ¹⁶ Do not regard your female servant as _⌊worthless_⌋,* but because of the extent of my worries and my provocation I have spoken all of this."

⁴ The ropes of death encircled me, and streams of ruin overwhelmed me. ⁵ The ropes of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me. ⁶ In my trouble I called on Yahweh, and to my God I cried for help. He heard my voice from his temple, and my cry for help came up before his presence into his ears.

⁴ These I remember and I pour out my soul within me: that I would go with the multitude; I led them in procession to the house* of God, with a voice of rejoicing and thanksgiving, a crowd celebrating a festival.

⁸ Trust him at all times, O people; pour out before him your heart. God is a refuge for us. Selah

¹ A prayer of one afflicted, when he grows faint and pours out his lament before Yahweh.*
O Yahweh, hear my prayer, and let my cry for help come to you. ² Do not hide your face from me in the day of my trouble. Incline your ear to me. In the day I call, answer me quickly, ³ for my days vanish in smoke, and my bones are charred like a hearth. ⁴ My heart is struck like grass and withers. Indeed, I forget to eat* my bread. ⁵ Because of the sound of my groaning my bones* cling to my skin.* ⁶ I am like an owl* of the wilderness; I am like a little owl of the ruins. ⁷ I lie awake and I am like a lone bird on a roof. ⁸ All the day my enemies reproach me; those who mock me swear oaths against me. ⁹ Indeed, I eat ashes like bread and mix my drink with tears* ¹⁰ because of your indignation and anger, for you have picked me up and thrown me away. ¹¹ My days are like a lengthened shadow, and I wither like grass. ¹² But you, O Yahweh, abide* forever, and your remembrance* _⌊from generation to generation_⌋.* ¹³ You rise up and take pity on Zion, because it is time to favor it, for the appointed time has come. ¹⁴ Your servants take pleasure in her stones, and show favor to its dust. ¹⁵ Then the nations will fear the name of Yahweh, and all the kings of the earth your glory. ¹⁶ For Yahweh will rebuild Zion; he will appear in his glory. ¹⁷ He will turn his attention to the prayer of the destitute and will not despise their prayer. ¹⁸ Let this be written for the next generation, so that a people yet to be created may praise Yah,* ¹⁹ that he looked down from his holy height. Your years continue throughout all generations. ²⁵ Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. ²⁶ They will perish, but you will endure. And like a garment they will all wear out, you will replace them like clothing, and they will be set aside. ²⁷ But you are the same, and your years do not end. ²⁸ The children of your servants will continue, and their _⌊descendants_⌋* will be established before you.

¹⁶ Yahweh, in distress they have visited you; they poured out an _⌊incantation_⌋;* your discipline was on them.

²⁶ And likewise also, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as one ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with unexpressed groanings.

⁶ Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. ⁷ And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds* in Christ Jesus.

⁷ who in the days of his flesh offered up both prayers and supplications, with loud crying and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard as a result of his reverence.

¹⁰ But he knows _⌊the way that I take_⌋;* he tests me—I shall come out like gold.

⁶ for Yahweh knows the way of the righteous,* but the way of the wicked will perish.

³ You have tried my heart; you have examined me by night; you have tested me; you found nothing. I have decided that my mouth will not transgress.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted _⌊within me_⌋.*

⁴ Bring me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, for you are my refuge.

⁷ For without cause they secretly hide the pit with their net for me; without cause they dug it for my life. ⁸ Let _⌊unforeseen ruin_⌋* come on him, and his net that he hid, let it catch him. Let him fall into it in ruin.

⁶ They attack,* they hide, they watch my _⌊steps_⌋,* as they lie in wait for my life.

² From the end of the earth* I call to you when my heart grows faint. You will lead me to a rock that is higher than I.

² You know my sitting down and my rising up. You understand my thought from afar. ³ You search out* my wandering and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. ⁴ For there is not a word yet on my tongue, but behold, O Yahweh, you know it completely.

⁵ The proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords. They have spread out a net along the _⌊side_⌋* of the path. They have set snares for me. Selah

⁹ Protect me from the _⌊grasp_⌋* of the trap they have laid for me, and from the snares of evildoers.

⁴ And so my spirit grows faint within me; my heart _⌊within_⌋* me is desolate.

²² Let a cry for help be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring upon them the raiding band, for they have dug a pit to catch me, and they have fixed secretly a trap for my feet.

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went _⌊and consulted_⌋* so that they could entrap him with a statement.

³³ And he took along Peter and James and John with him, and he began to be distressed and troubled. ³⁴ And he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake." ³⁵ And going forward a little he fell to the ground and began to pray* that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from him. ³⁶ And he said, "Abba,* Father, all things are possible for you! Take away this cup from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will."*

¹¹ Will the rulers of Keilah deliver me into his hand? Will Saul come down as your servant has heard? O Yahweh, God of Israel, please tell your servant!" And Yahweh said, "He will come down." ¹² Then David said, "Will the rulers of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?" And Yahweh said, "They will deliver you." ¹³ So David and his men got up, about six hundred men, and went out from Keilah and wandered wherever they could go. When it was told to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, _⌊he stopped his pursuit_⌋.*

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh on the hill of Hakilah, which is south of Jeshimon? ²⁰ So then, O king, _⌊whenever you want_⌋* to come down, come down, and it will be for us to deliver him into the hand of the king."

¹ Then David _⌊thought to himself_⌋,* "Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul! There is nothing better for me but that I must certainly escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will desist from searching for me further in all of the territories of Israel, and so I will escape from his hand."

²⁰ But* the eyes of the wicked will fail; and refuge will be lost to them, and their hope is _⌊to breathe their last breath_⌋."*

¹³ "He has removed my kinsfolk from me, and my acquaintances have only* turned aside from me. ¹⁴ My relatives have failed, and my close friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ The sojourners in* my house and my slave women count me as a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes. ¹⁶ I call to my servant, but* he does not answer; I must _⌊personally_⌋* plead with him. ¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to _⌊my own family_⌋.* ¹⁸ Little boys also despise me; when I rise, then* they talk against me. ¹⁹ All _⌊my intimate friends_⌋* abhor me, and these whom I have loved have turned against me.

¹¹ Because of all my adversaries I have become a disgrace, especially to my neighbors, and a dread to my acquaintances. Those who see me in the street flee from me.

²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart and I am sick. And I hoped for sympathy, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.

⁸ You have removed my acquaintances far from me. You have made me detestable* to them. I am confined and cannot go out.

¹⁸ You have removed loved one and friend far from me, my acquaintances far from my darkness.

³⁵ And flight will perish from the shepherds, and escape from the leaders* of the flock.

¹⁷ For I will present healing to you, and I will heal you of your wounds,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. 'Because they have called you an outcast, saying, "It is Zion, there is no one who cares for her." '

⁵⁶ But all this has happened in order that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then the disciples all abandoned him and* fled.

¹⁶ At my first defense, no one came to my aid, but they all deserted me; may it not be counted against them.

⁵ Yahweh is the portion which is my share and my cup. You hold my lot.

¹³ Surely* I believe that I will see the goodness of Yahweh in the land of the living.

God is our refuge and strength, a very sufficient help in troubles.

⁷ Yahweh of hosts is with us; our high stronghold is the God of Jacob. Selah

¹³ because you have delivered my soul from death. Have you not kept my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

⁶ Only he is my rock and my salvation, my high stronghold; I shall not be shaken. ⁷ On God rests my salvation and my glory; God* is my strong rock, my refuge.

²⁶ My flesh and heart failed, but God is the _⌊strength_⌋* of my heart and my reward forever.

² I will say to Yahweh, "You are my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust."

⁹ For you, O Yahweh, are my refuge. You have made the Most High your dwelling place.* ¹⁰ No harm will befall you, and no plague will come near your tent.

⁵⁷ Yahweh is my portion; I intend to heed your words.

²⁴ "Yahweh is my portion," says my soul, "Thus I will hope on him."

³² Behold, an hour is coming—and has come—that you will be scattered each one to his own home,* and you will leave me alone. And I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

¹⁷ But the Lord helped me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fulfilled and all the Gentiles might hear, and he rescued me from the lion's mouth.

Yahweh, how many are my enemies; many are rising against me.

¹ A prayer of David.*
O Yahweh, hear a just cause. Hear my cry; heed my prayer I make without deceitful lips.

¹⁷ He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me because they were stronger than I.

¹⁹ And my enemies without cause* are numerous, and those who hate me wrongfully* are many.

²⁴ Why do you hide your face? Have you forgotten our misery and our oppression? ²⁵ For our soul is bowed down to the dust. Our _⌊body_⌋* clings to the ground. ²⁶ Rise up! Be a help for us, and redeem us for the sake of your loyal love.

³ He will send from heaven and save me; he will reproach the one who tramples me. Selah God will send his loyal love and his faithfulness. ⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie down among those who devour— the children* of humankind whose teeth are spears and arrows and whose tongues are sharp swords.

³ For look, they lie in wait for my life.* The mighty attack* against me, not because of my transgression or my sin, O Yahweh.

⁸ Do not remember against us former iniquities; let your mercies meet us quickly because we are brought very low.

⁶ Yahweh watches over the simple. I was brought low, but he gave me victory.

²³ Who remembered us in our low estate, for his loyal love endures forever.

³ For the enemy has pursued my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground. He has made me dwell in dark places like those long dead.

⁷ Quickly answer me, O Yahweh; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, or I will become like those descending to the pit.

³³ Who will bring charges against God's elect? God is the one who justifies.

³⁷ No, but in all these things we prevail completely through the one who loved us.

⁶ Rise up, O Yahweh, in your anger, and lift yourself up against the wrath* of my oppressors, and awake for me, since you have commanded judgment. ⁷ And let the assembly of peoples surround you, and over it return on high.

³ When my enemies turn back, they will stumble and perish because of your presence.

¹⁴ so that I may tell of all your praises. In the gates of the daughter of Zion let me rejoice in your salvation.

⁶ * I will sing to Yahweh because he has dealt bountifully with me.

²¹ Save me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen answer me. ²² I will tell your name to my brothers; inside the assembly I will praise you. ²³ You who revere Yahweh, praise him! Glorify him, all you seed of Jacob, and be in awe of him, all you seed of Israel, ²⁴ because he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and has not hid his face from him; but he listened to him when he cried for help. ²⁵ From you is my praise. In the great assembly, I will pay my vows before those who revere him. ²⁶ The afflicted will eat and will be satisfied. Those who seek him will praise Yahweh. ⁸ And you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a broad place.

² My soul makes its boast in Yahweh; let the humble hear and be glad.

⁴ I am reckoned with those descending to the pit. I am like a man* without strength,* ⁵ set free* among the dead, like the slain lying in the grave, whom you no longer remember, even those cut off from your hand. ⁶ You have set me in the pit below, in dark places, in the depths. ⁷ Your wrath presses upon me, and you afflict me with all your waves. Selah ⁸ You have removed my acquaintances far from me. You have made me detestable* to them. I am confined and cannot go out.

⁴¹ But he protects* the needy from misery, and he makes their families like a flock. ⁴² The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.

⁷ Return, O my soul, to your repose, for Yahweh has dealt bountifully with you.

¹⁷ Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live and heed your word.

⁷ who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food for the hungry. Yahweh sets prisoners free;

¹ The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is upon me, because Yahweh has anointed me, he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up _⌊the brokenhearted_⌋,* to _⌊proclaim_⌋* release to the captives and liberation to those who are bound,

²⁴ God raised _⌊him_⌋* up, having brought to an end the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

¹¹ Behold, we consider blessed those who have endured. You have heard about the patient endurance of Job, and you saw the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
