³ For not with their sword did they possess the land, and their arm did not give them victory. Rather it was your right hand and your arm and the light of your presence, because you delighted in them.

¹⁶ Terror and dread fell on them; at the greatness of your arm they became silent like the stone, until your people passed by, Yahweh, until the people whom you bought passed by.

⁸ If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and he will give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey.

³⁷ And because he loved your ancestors* he chose their _⌊descendants_⌋* after them. And he brought you forth from Egypt _⌊with his own presence_⌋,* by his great strength, ³⁸ to drive out nations greater and more numerous than you _⌊from before you_⌋,* to bring you and to give to you their land as an inheritance, as it is this day.

⁷ "Yahweh loved you and chose you not _⌊because of your great number_⌋* exceeding all other peoples, for you are fewer than all of the peoples, ⁸ but* _⌊because of_⌋* the love of Yahweh for you and because of his keeping of the sworn oath that he swore to your ancestors,* Yahweh brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

¹⁷ And you may think* in your heart, 'My strength and the might of my hand _⌊acquired this wealth for_⌋* me.' ¹⁸ But you must remember Yahweh your God, for he is the one giving you strength to acquire wealth in order to confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors* _⌊as it is today_⌋.*

¹⁵ _⌊Yet_⌋* to your ancestors* Yahweh was very attached, so as to love them, and so he chose their offspring after them, namely you, from all the peoples, as it is _⌊today_⌋.*

¹² I sent before you the hornet and they drove out before you two kings of the Amorites;* but not by your sword or bow.

²² For Yahweh will not forsake his people for the sake of his great name, because Yahweh has decided to make you his own people.

⁶ Many are saying, "Who will show us something good?" Lift up over* us the light of your face, O Yahweh.

⁷ Show wondrously your acts of loyal love, O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand* from those who rise up against them.

⁶ Now I know that Yahweh will help his anointed.* He will answer him from his holy heaven with the victorious power of his right hand.

⁵ Why are you _⌊in despair_⌋,* O my soul, and disturbed within me? Hope in God, because I will again praise him, for the salvation of his presence.

¹¹ Why are you _⌊in despair_⌋,* O my soul? And why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, because I shall again praise him, _⌊my salvation_⌋* and my God.

¹¹ Why do you draw back your hand, even your right hand? Take it from your bosom;* destroy them!

² "I have loved you," says Yahweh, but you say, "How have you loved us?" "Is Esau not Jacob's brother?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "I have loved Jacob, ³ but Esau I have hated. I have made his* mountain ranges a desolation, and given his inheritance to the jackals of the desert."

¹⁰ And not only this, but also when* Rebecca conceived children by one man,* Isaac our father— ¹¹ for although they* had not yet been born, or done anything good or evil, in order that the purpose of God according to election might remain, ¹² not by works but by the one who calls—it was said to her, "The older will serve the younger,"* ¹³ just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."* ¹⁴ What then shall we say? There is no injustice with God, is there?* May it never be! ¹⁵ For to Moses he says, "I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion."*

⁷ But we have this treasure in earthenware jars, in order that the extraordinary degree of the power may be from God and not from us.
