And he said, "Come over here to sit, _⌊friend_⌋."* And he came over and sat. ² And he took ten men from the elders of the city and said, "Sit here." And they sat. ³ And he said to the redeemer, "Naomi, who returned from the countryside of Moab, is selling the tract of land which was for our brother Elimelech. ⁴ And I thought _⌊I would tell you_⌋* and say, '_⌊Buy it in the presence of_⌋* those sitting and before the elders of my people,' if you want to redeem it, redeem it. But if you do not want to redeem, tell me so that I may know, for there is no one except you to redeem it, and I am after you." And he said, "I want to redeem it." ⁵ And Boaz said, "On the day of your acquiring the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the wife of the dead man, in order to raise up for the name of the dead his inheritance." ⁶ And the redeemer said, "I am not able to redeem for myself, lest I ruin my inheritance. You redeem for yourself my kinsman-redemption, for I am not able to redeem it." ⁷ (Now this _⌊was the custom in former times_⌋* in Israel concerning the kinsman-redemption and transfer of property: to confirm the matter, a man removed his sandal and gave it to his fellow countryman. This was the manner of attesting in Israel.) ⁸ So the redeemer said to Boaz, "Acquire it for yourself," and he removed his sandal. ⁹ And Boaz said to the elders and all of the people, "You are witnesses today that I have acquired all that was for Elimelech and that was for Kilion and Mahlon from the hand of Naomi. ¹⁰ And also Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, I have acquired as a wife, to raise up the name of the dead over his inheritance, so that the name of the dead may not be cut off from his relatives and from the gate of his birth place. You are witnesses today." ¹¹ And all of the people who were at the gate and the elders said, "We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman coming into your house as Rachel and as Leah, who _⌊together_⌋* built the house of Israel. May you have strength in Ephrathah and bestow a name in Bethlehem. ¹² And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah from the offspring that Yahweh will give to you from this young woman." ¹³ So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and Yahweh _⌊enabled her to conceive_⌋,* and she bore a son. ¹⁴ And the women said to Naomi, "Blessed be Yahweh who today _⌊did not leave you without a redeemer_⌋!* And may his name be renowned in Israel! ¹⁵ He shall be for you a restorer of life and a sustainer in your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is better for you than seven sons, has borne him." ¹⁶ And Naomi took the child and she put him on her bosom and became his nurse. ¹⁷ And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Naomi." And they called his name Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. ¹⁸ Now these are the descendants of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, ¹⁹ and Hezron fathered Ram, and Ram fathered Amminadab, ²⁰ and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon, ²¹ and Salmon fathered Boaz, and Boaz fathered Obed, ²² and Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

¹⁸ "You shall appoint judges and officials for you in all your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you throughout your tribes, and you shall render for the people _⌊righteous judgments_⌋.*

⁵ then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has* done this evil thing to your gates; that is, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them with stones _⌊to death_⌋.*

¹⁹ then his father and his mother shall take hold of him, and they shall bring him out to the elders of his city and to the gate of his _⌊town_⌋,*

⁷ But if the man does not want to take his sister-in-law, then his sister-in-law shall go up to the gate, to the elders, and she shall say, 'My brother-in-law refused _⌊to perpetuate his brother's name_⌋* in Israel, for he is not willing _⌊to marry me_⌋.'*

¹² Now truly I am a redeemer, but there is also a redeemer of a closer relationship than me.

⁷ "At my going out the gate to the city, I secured my seat in the square.

²¹ if I have raised my hand against an orphan because I saw my supporters at the gate,

¹ "Ho! Everyone thirsty, come to the waters! And whoever has no money, come, buy and eat, and come, buy without money, wine and milk without price!

¹⁰ They hate the one who reproves in the gate and they abhor the one who speaks honestly. ¹¹ Therefore, because you trample on the poor and you take a grain tax from them, you built houses of dressed stone, but you will not live in them. You built vineyards of delightfulness, but you will not drink their wine. ¹² For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous, you foes of the righteous, those who take a bribe, and _⌊those who_⌋* push aside the poor ones in the gate!

¹⁵ Hate evil and love good and establish justice in the gate; perhaps Yahweh, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

⁶ "Woe! Woe! Flee from the land of the north," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "for I have scattered you like the four winds of the heavens," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

²¹ And you will select from all the people men of ability, fearers of God, trustworthy men, haters of dishonest gain,* and you will appoint such men over them as commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, and commanders of tens. ²² And let them judge the people all the time, _⌊and_⌋* every major issue they will bring to you, and every minor issue they will judge themselves. And so lighten it for yourself, and they will bear it with you.

⁸ If _⌊she does not please her master_⌋* who selected her, he will allow her to be redeemed; he has no authority to sell her to foreign people, since he has dealt treacherously with her.

¹⁰ "You are standing _⌊today_⌋,* all of you, _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God, your leaders, your tribes, your elders, and your officials, all the men of Israel,

²⁸ Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officials, so that I may speak in their ears these words, and that I may call as witness against them heaven and earth.

⁸ So she wrote letters in the name of Ahab and sealed them with his seal. She sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who were dwelling with Naboth in his city.

²³ Her husband* is known at the gates, in his seat among the elders of the land.

¹⁴ Elders are no longer at the gate, young men no longer play stringed instruments.

¹² And they incited the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came up and* seized him and brought him* to the Sanhedrin.*

⁵ It goes well for a man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his _⌊business properly_⌋.*

¹⁰ Only by insolence is strife set up, and wisdom is with those who take advice.

²⁵ " 'When your* brother becomes poor and he sells part of his property, then* _⌊his nearest redeemer_⌋* shall come, and he shall redeem the thing sold by his brother. ²⁶ But* if* a man _⌊does not have_⌋* a redeemer, then* _⌊he prospers_⌋* and he finds enough for his redemption, ²⁷ then* he shall calculate the years of its selling, and he shall refund the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and he shall return to his property. ²⁸ But* if his hand does not find enough to refund to him, then* _⌊what he has sold_⌋* shall be in the buyer's hand until the Year of Jubilee; and it shall go out of the buyer's hand* in the Jubilee, and he shall return to his property. ²⁹ " 'And if a man sells _⌊a residential house in a walled city_⌋,* then* it shall be his redemption until completing _⌊a year after his selling_⌋;* its redemption _⌊shall last_⌋* _⌊a year_⌋.*

⁷ 'Look, Hanamel, the son of Shallum, your uncle, is going to come to you, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Buy for yourself my field that is at Anathoth, for _⌊you have_⌋* the right of redemption to buy it." '* ⁸ Then Hanamel, the son of my uncle, came to me, to the courtyard of the guard _⌊according to_⌋* the word of Yahweh, and he said to me, 'Please buy my field that is at Anathoth, that is in the land of Benjamin, for to you is the claim of possession, and to you the redemption; buy it* for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of Yahweh. ⁹ And I bought the field from Hanamel, the son of my uncle, that was at Anathoth. And I weighed out to him the money, seventeen silver shekels. ¹⁰ And I signed on the letter* and sealed it,* and I called witnesses as witness, and I weighed out the money on a set of scales. ¹¹ Then I took the deed* of the purchase, the sealed copy containing the commandments* and the rules, together with the one that was open. ¹² And I gave the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, _⌊in the presence of_⌋* Hanamel, the son of my uncle, and _⌊in the presence of_⌋* the witnesses who signed the deed of the purchase, _⌊in the presence of_⌋* the Judeans* who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

²⁵ Yet you have said to me, Lord Yahweh, "Buy for yourself the field with the money, and call witnesses as witness," though the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.'"

¹⁷ Pay back no one evil for evil. Take thought for what is good in the sight of all people.

²¹ For we are taking into consideration what is honorable not only before the Lord, but also before people.

⁸ Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are pleasing, whatever things are commendable, if there is any excellence of character and if anything praiseworthy, think about these things.

⁸ Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to the wife of your brother and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother."

⁵ "When brothers dwell together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not become the wife of a _⌊man of another family_⌋;* her brother-in-law _⌊shall have sex with her_⌋,* and he shall take her _⌊to himself_⌋* as a wife, and he shall perform his duty as a brother-in-law with respect to her. ⁶ And then the firstborn that she bears _⌊shall represent his dead brother_⌋,* so that his name is not blotted out from Israel.

¹² Now truly I am a redeemer, but there is also a redeemer of a closer relationship than me. ¹³ _⌊Stay tonight,_⌋* and in the morning, if he wants to redeem you, good; but if he is not willing to redeem, _⌊then as Yahweh lives,_⌋* I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning."

²⁴ saying, "Teacher, Moses said if someone dies without having children, his brother is to marry his wife and _⌊father_⌋* descendants for his brother.

²⁸ saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us if someone's brother dies having a wife, and this man is childless, that his brother should take the wife and _⌊father_⌋* descendants for his brother.

²⁵ " 'When your* brother becomes poor and he sells part of his property, then* _⌊his nearest redeemer_⌋* shall come, and he shall redeem the thing sold by his brother.

¹³ _⌊Stay tonight,_⌋* and in the morning, if he wants to redeem you, good; but if he is not willing to redeem, _⌊then as Yahweh lives,_⌋* I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning."

⁷ But if the man does not want to take his sister-in-law, then his sister-in-law shall go up to the gate, to the elders, and she shall say, 'My brother-in-law refused _⌊to perpetuate his brother's name_⌋* in Israel, for he is not willing _⌊to marry me_⌋.'* ⁸ Then the elders of his town shall summon him and speak to him, and if he persists and says, '_⌊I do not desire to_⌋* marry her' ⁹ then his sister-in-law shall go near him before the eyes of the elders, and she shall pull off his sandal from his foot, and she shall spit in his face, and she shall _⌊declare_⌋* and she shall say, 'This is how it is done to the man who does not build the house of his brother.' ¹⁰ And his _⌊family_⌋* shall be called in Israel, 'The house where the sandal was pulled off.'*

¹⁶ Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named* in the hearing of the Hittites:* four hundred shekels of silver _⌊at the merchants' current rate_⌋.* ¹⁷ So the field of Ephron which was in the Machpelah, which was near Mamre—the field and the cave which was in it, with all the trees that were in the field, which were within all its surrounding boundaries—_⌊passed_⌋* ¹⁸ to Abraham as a property in the presence of the Hittites,* with respect to all who were entering the gate of his city.

¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel and said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter." ¹⁹ Then Laban said, "Better that I give her to you than I give her to another man. Stay with me."

²⁷ Complete the week of this one,* then I will also give you the other, _⌊on the condition that you will work for me_⌋* another seven years."

⁶ And then the firstborn that she bears _⌊shall represent his dead brother_⌋,* so that his name is not blotted out from Israel.

⁹ The Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of this, and they will surround us and cut off our name from the land. What will you do, for your great name?"

¹⁶ The face of Yahweh is against evildoers, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

¹⁵ Let them be before Yahweh continually, that he may cut off their* memory from the earth,

²² He who finds a wife* finds good, and he will obtain favor from Yahweh.

¹⁴ A house and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but from Yahweh comes a woman* who is prudent.

¹⁰ A woman* of excellence,* who will find? For her worth is far more than precious jewels. ¹¹ The heart of her husband* trusts in her, and gain he will not lack.

² And I will require reliable witnesses as a witness for me: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah." ³ And I approached the prophetess, and she conceived, and she gave birth to a son. And Yahweh said to me, "Call his name Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz.

¹⁹ And your offspring would have been like the sand, and the descendants of your _⌊body_⌋* like its grains.* It would not be cut off, and its name would not be destroyed from my presence."

² So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer of barely and a measure of wine.*

¹² Jacob fled to the open field of Aram,* and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he watched over sheep.

² _⌊And then_⌋,* on that day,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh of hosts, 'I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered; and also the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness I will banish from the land.

¹⁴ But you ask, "_⌊For what reason_⌋?"* Because Yahweh stands as a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have been unfaithful, even though she is your marriage partner and _⌊your wife by covenant_⌋.*

²⁵ Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for her;

⁴ Marriage must be held in honor by all, and the marriage bed be undefiled, because God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers.

⁶⁰ And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, "You are our sister; may you become countless thousands; and may your offspring take possession of the gate of his enemies."

³² Then Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, "Because Yahweh has noticed my misery, that I am unloved. Now my husband will love me."

¹⁶ Then they journeyed from Bethel. And _⌊when they were still some distance_⌋* from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor. And she had hard labor. ¹⁷ And _⌊when her labor was the most difficult_⌋* the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid _⌊for you have another son_⌋."* ¹⁸ And it happened that when her life was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-Oni.* But his father called him Benjamin.* ¹⁹ And Rachel died and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). ²⁰ And Jacob erected a pillar at her burial site. That is the pillar of the burial site of Rachel unto this day.

⁸ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons. Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob ⁹ and the sons of Reuben: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹ The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ¹³ The sons of Issachar: Tolah, Puvah, Iob, and Shimron. ¹⁴ The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah that she bore to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, and Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters were thirty-three persons in all. ¹⁶ The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. ¹⁷ The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah, and their sister Serah. And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malkiel. ¹⁸ There are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob—sixteen persons. ¹⁹ The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ And Ephraim and Manasseh, whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On bore to him, were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt. ²¹ The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all. ²³ The sons of Dan: Hushim. ²⁴ The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These are the sons of Bilhah whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob—seven persons in all. ²⁶ All the persons belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt _⌊who were his descendants_⌋,* not including the wives of the sons of Jacob were sixty-six persons in all. ²⁷ And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who came to Egypt were seventy.

¹ * And it happened after the plague, *Yahweh said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying, ² "_⌊Take a census_⌋* of the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* all who are able to go out to war in Israel." ³ So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them on the desert-plateau of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, saying, ⁴ "Take a census of the community from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, just as Yahweh commanded Moses."
The Israelites who went out from the land of Egypt were: ⁵ Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, the descendants* of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;* ⁶ of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites;* of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.* ⁷ These are the clans of the Reubenites,* and the ones counted of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. ⁸ The children of Pallu: Eliab. ⁹ The children of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. They will inherit according to the names of the tribes of their ancestors.* ⁵⁶ _⌊Their_⌋* inheritance must be divided according to the lot between the larger and smaller groups." ⁵⁷ These are the ones counted of the Levites according to their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites;* of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites;* of Merari, the clan of the Merarites.* ⁵⁸ These are the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites,* the clan of the Hebronites,* the clan of the Mahlites,* the clan of the Mushites,* the clan of the Korahites.* Kohath fathered Amram. ⁵⁹ The name of the wife of Amram was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whose mother bore her for Levi in Egypt; she bore to Amram: Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam. ⁶⁰ To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. ⁶¹ But Nadab and Abihu died when they presented strange fire _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh. ⁶² The ones counted were twenty-three thousand, every male from _⌊a month old_⌋* and above, because they were not counted in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* since no inheritance was given to them in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ⁶³ These were the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on the desert-plateau of Moab on the Jordan across Jericho. ⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For Yahweh said to them, "They will surely die in the desert." And not a man was left over from them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

⁹ then his sister-in-law shall go near him before the eyes of the elders, and she shall pull off his sandal from his foot, and she shall spit in his face, and she shall _⌊declare_⌋* and she shall say, 'This is how it is done to the man who does not build the house of his brother.'

² And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephraimites from Bethlehem in Judah. And they went to the countryside of Moab and remained there.

³ Look, children* are the heritage* of Yahweh; the fruit of the womb is a reward. ⁴ Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children* of one's youth. ⁵ Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.* They shall not be put to shame when they speak with enemies at the gate.

³ Your wife will be like a fruitful vine _⌊within_⌋* your house. Your children* will be like olive shoots about your table. ⁴ Look, for thus shall a man be blessed _⌊who fears Yahweh_⌋.* ⁵ May Yahweh bless you from Zion, that you may see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life, ⁶ and that you may see your children's children. May peace be upon Israel.

⁶ Look, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found her in the fields of Jaar.*

¹ The _⌊wisest of women_⌋* builds her house, but the foolish tears it down with her hands.

² But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you one will go out for me, to be ruler in Israel; and his origins are from of old, from ancient days.

⁶ 'And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for from you will go out a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'"*

¹⁸ Now these are the descendants of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron,

²⁰ And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and he said, "May Yahweh give you an offspring from this woman in place of the petitioned one that she requested from Yahweh." Then they went to their home.

⁴ And Tamar his daughter-in-law bore Perez and Zerah to him. The sons of Judah were five in all.

³ and Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez became the father of Hezron, and Hezron became the father of Aram,*

¹⁷ And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his female servants so that they could bear children again.

²¹ And Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. And Yahweh responded to his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

³¹ When Yahweh saw that Leah was unloved he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

² And Jacob _⌊became angry_⌋* with Rachel. And he said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?"

²² Then God remembered Rachel and listened to her, and God opened her womb. ²³ And she conceived and gave birth to a son. And she said, "God has taken away my disgrace."

⁵ Then Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and the children and said, "Who are these with you?" And he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."

¹¹ And so then my daughter, do not be afraid. All that you ask I will do for you, for the entire assembly of my people knows that you are a worthy woman.

¹² And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah from the offspring that Yahweh will give to you from this young woman."

²⁷ I prayed for this boy, and Yahweh has given me my request that I asked from him.

⁵ Those who were full must hire themselves out for bread, but those who are hungry will become fat. As for the infertile, she will bear seven, but she who has many sons withers away.

⁹ He causes the barren woman of the house to dwell as the happy mother of children. Praise Yah!*

³ Look, children* are the heritage* of Yahweh; the fruit of the womb is a reward.

² And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing.

²⁷ And he said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld* his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master's brother."

³⁵ And she conceived again and gave birth to a son. And she said, "This time I will praise Yahweh." Therefore she called his name Judah. And she ceased bearing children.

²¹ and Salmon fathered Boaz, and Boaz fathered Obed, ²² and Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

¹ Of David, when he _⌊pretended to be crazy_⌋* in front of Abimelech* so that he drove him out, and so he departed.*

¹ And a shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from its roots will bear fruit. ² And the spirit of Yahweh shall rest on him— a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and might, a spirit of knowledge and the fear of Yahweh. ³ And his _⌊breath_⌋* is in the fear of Yahweh. ¹¹ And I will provide for you there, because there are still five years of famine—lest you and your household and all that you have become destitute.'

¹² And Joseph provided his father and his brothers and all the household of his father with food, according to the number of their children.

⁸ So Elkanah her husband would say to her: "Hannah, why do you weep and why do you not eat? And _⌊why are you heartsick_⌋?* Am I not better to you than ten sons?"

²² Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.*

²⁴ A man of many friends will come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

⁴ Even* to your old age I am he; even* to your advanced age I myself will support you. I myself have made you, and I myself will carry you, and I myself will support you, and I will save you.

⁵⁸ And her neighbors and relatives heard that _⌊the Lord had shown his great mercy to her_⌋,* and they rejoiced with her. ⁵⁹ And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were wanting to name him _⌊after_⌋* his father Zechariah. ⁶⁰ And his mother answered and* said, "No, but he will be named John." ⁶¹ And they said to her, "There is no one of your relatives who is called by this name." ⁶² So they made signs to his father asking what he wanted him to be named, ⁶³ and he asked for a writing tablet and* wrote, saying, "John is his name." And they were all astonished.

⁴ And Tamar his daughter-in-law bore Perez and Zerah to him. The sons of Judah were five in all. ⁵ The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul. ⁶ The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara, five in all. ⁷ The son of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who acted unfaithfully in the matter of the devoted thing. ⁸ And the son of Ethan was Azariah.

¹ The sons of Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal.

³ and Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez became the father of Hezron, and Hezron became the father of Aram,* ⁴ and Aram became the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon became the father of Salmon, ⁵ and Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed became the father of Jesse, ⁶ and Jesse became the father of David the king.
And David became the father of Solomon by the wife* of Uriah,

³³ the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,

⁹ The sons of Hezron who were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb. ¹⁰ And Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah.
