¹ Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars. ² She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table. ³ She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying, ⁴ Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that lack understanding she says, ⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you. ⁶ Leave folly, that you⌃ may reign for ever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge. ⁷ He that reproves evil [men] shall get dishonor to himself; and he that rebukes an ungodly [man] shall disgrace himself. ⁸ Rebuke not evil [men], lest they should hate you: rebuke a wise [man], and he will love you. ⁹ Give an opportunity to a wise [man], and he will be wiser: instruct a just man, and he will receive more [instruction]. ¹⁰ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the counsel of saints is understanding: for to know the law is [the character] of a sound mind. ¹¹ For in this way you shall live long, and years of your life shall be added to you. ¹² Son, if you be wise for yourself, you shall also be wise for your neighbors; and if you should prove wicked, you alone will bear the evil. He that stays himself upon falsehoods, attempts to rule the winds, and the same will pursue birds in their fight: for he has forsaken the ways of his own vineyard, and he has caused the axles of his own husbandry to go astray; and he goes through a dry desert, and a [land] appointed to drought, and he gathers barrenness with his hands. ¹³ A foolish and bold woman, who knows not modesty, comes to lack a morsel. ¹⁴ She sits at the doors of her house, on a seat openly in the streets, ¹⁵ calling to passers by, and to those that are going right on their ways; ¹⁶ [saying], Whoso is most senseless of you, let him turn aside to me; and I exhort those that lack prudence, saying, ¹⁷ Take and enjoy secret bread, and the sweet water of theft. ¹⁸ But he knows that mighty men die by her, and he falls in with a snare of hell. But hasten away, delay not in the place, neither fix your eye upon her: for thus shall you go through strange water; but do you abstain from strange water, and drink not of a strange fountain, that you may live long, and years of life may be added to you.

¹⁶ And Joseph saw them and his brother Benjamin, born of the same mother; and he said to the steward of his household, Bring the men into the house, and kill beasts and make ready, for the men are to eat bread with me at noon.

⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you.

³⁰ Are not those of them that stay long at wine? [are] not [those] of them that haunt [the places] where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse [with them] openly.

² I would take you, I would bring you into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me; I would make you to drink of spiced wine, of the juice of my pomegranates.

⁶ And the Lord of hosts shall make [a feast] for all the nations: on this mount they shall drink gladness, they shall drink wine:

¹¹ And I put on sackcloth for my covering; and I became a proverb to them.

²⁰ Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly. ²¹ And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says, ²² So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs. ²³ Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech.

¹ You shall proclaim wisdom, that understanding may be obedient to you. ² For she is on lofty eminences, and stands in the midst of the ways. ³ For she sits by the gates of princes, and sings in the entrances, [saying],

¹⁴ She sits at the doors of her house, on a seat openly in the streets,

⁷ Some [glory] in chariots, and some in horses: but we will glory in the name of the Lord our God.

²² So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs.

³² But the adulterer through lack of sense procures destruction to his soul.

⁵ O you⌃ simple, understand subtlety, and you⌃ that are untaught, imbibe knowledge.

¹⁶ [saying], Whoso is most senseless of you, let him turn aside to me; and I exhort those that lack prudence, saying,

¹⁷ Take and enjoy secret bread, and the sweet water of theft.

¹ Let my kinsman come down into his garden, and eat the fruit of his choice berries. I am come into my garden, my sister, [my] spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spices; I have eaten my bread with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends, and drink; yes, brethren, drink abundantly.

¹ You⌃ that thirst, go to the water, and all that have no money, go [and] buy; and eat [and drink] wine and fat without money or price. ² Therefore do you⌃ value at the price of money, and [give] your labor for that which will not satisfy? listen to me, and you⌃ shall eat that which is good, and your soul shall feast itself on good things. ³ Give heed with your ears, and follow my ways: listen to me, and your soul shall live in prosperity; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, the sure mercies of David.

¹² Therefore, behold, his days come, says the Lord, when I shall send upon him bad leaders, and they shall lead him astray, and they shall utterly break in pieces his possessions, and shall cut his horns asunder. ¹³ And Moab shall be ashamed of Chamos, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Baethel their hope, having trusted in them. ¹⁴ How will you⌃ say, We are strong, and men strong for war?

⁴ One thing have I asked of the Lord, this will I earnestly seek: that I should dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life, that I should behold the fair beauty of the Lord, and survey his temple. ⁵ For in the day of mine afflictions he hid me in his tabernacle: he sheltered me in the secret of his tabernacle; he set me up on a rock. ⁶ And now, behold, he has lifted up mine head over mine enemies: I went round and offered in his tabernacle the sacrifice of joy; I will sing even sing psalms to the Lord.

¹⁰ Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

¹¹ For I teach you the ways of wisdom; and I cause you to go in right paths.

¹⁴ Go not in the ways of the ungodly, neither covet the ways of transgressors. ¹⁵ In whatever place they shall pitch their camp, go not there; but turn from them, and pass away.

³⁵ For my outgoings are the outgoings of life, and [in them] is prepared favor from the Lord.

¹¹ For in this way you shall live long, and years of your life shall be added to you.

¹⁷ Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray.

²⁰ If you walk with wise men you shall be wise: but he that walks with fools shall be known.

⁸ But I have two daughters, who have not known a man. I will bring them out to you, and do you⌃ use them as it may please you, only do not injury to these men, to avoid which they came under the shelter of my roof. ⁹ And they said to him, Stand back there, you came in to sojourn, was it also to judge? Now then we would harm you more than them. And they pressed hard on the man, even Lot, and they drew near to break the door.

¹⁷ And it came to pass when Achaab saw Eliu, that Achaab said to Eliu, Are you he that perverts Israel?

²⁰ struck each one the man next to him; and each one a second time struck the man next to him: and Syria fled, and Israel pursued them; and the son of Ader, [even] the king of Syria, escapes on the horse of a horseman.

²⁴ And Sedekias the son of Chanaan came near and struck Michaias on the cheek, and said, What sort of a spirit of the Lord [has] spoken in you?

²⁷ and tell Joas the king's son to put this [fellow] in prison, and to feed him with bread of affliction and water of affliction until I return in peace.

²⁰ And the Spirit of God came upon Azarias the son of Jodae the priest, and he stood up above the people, and said, Thus says the Lord, Why do you⌃ transgress the commandments of the Lord? so shall you⌃ not prosper; for you⌃ have forsaken the Lord, and he will forsake you. ²¹ And they conspired against him, and stone him by command of king Joas in the court of the Lord's house. ²² So Joas remembered not the kindness which his father Jodae had exercised towards him, but killed his son. And as he died, he said, The Lord look upon [it], and judge.

¹⁵ And the anger of the Lord came upon Amasias, and he sent him a prophet, and he said to him, Why have you sought the gods of the people, which have not rescued their own people out of your hand? ¹⁶ And it came to pass when the prophet was speaking to him, that he said to him, have I made you king's counsellor? take heed lest you be scourged: and the prophet forebore, and said, I know that [God] is disposed against you to destroy you, because you have done this thing, and have not listened to my counsel.

¹⁶ Nevertheless they sneered at his messengers, and set at nothing his words, and mocked his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose up against his people, till there was no remedy.

¹² An uninstructed person will not love those that reprove him; neither will he associate with the wise.

⁹ Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at your wise words.

¹⁷ You shall not hate your brother in your heart: you shall in any wise rebuke your neighbor, so you shall not bear sin on his account.

⁶ But Joshua the [son] of Naue, and Chaleb the [son] of Jephonne, of [the number of] them that spied out the land, tore their garments, ⁷ and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land which we surveyed is indeed extremely good. ⁸ If the Lord choose us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey. ⁹ Only depart not from the Lord; and fear you⌃ not the people of the land, for they are meat for us; for the season [of prosperity] is departed from them, but the Lord [is] among us: fear them not. ¹⁰ And all the congregation bade stone them with stones; and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud on the tabernacle of witness to all the children of Israel.

⁷ And Nathan said to David, You are the man that has done this. Thus says the Lord God of Israel, I anointed you to be king over Israel, and I rescued you out the hand of Saul; ⁸ and I gave you the house of your lord, and the wives of your lord into your bosom, and I gave to you the house of Israel and Juda; and if that had been little, I would have given you yet more. ⁹ Why have you set at nothing the word of the Lord, to do that which is evil in his eyes? you have slain Urias the Chettite with the sword, and you have taken his wife to be your wife, and you have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall not depart from your house for ever, because you has set me at nothing, and you have taken the wife of Urias the Chettite, to be your wife. ¹¹ Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will raise up against you evil out of your house, and I will take your wives before your eyes, and will give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing in the sight of all Israel, and before the sun. ¹³ And David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David, And the Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die. ¹⁴ Only because you have given great occasion of provocation to the enemies of the Lord by this thing, your son also that is born to you shall surely die.

²³ Behold, Nathan the prophet [is here]: and he came in to the king's presence, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground.

³² And king David said, Call me Sadoc the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Banaeas the son of Jodae: and they came in before the king.

⁸ And the king of Israel said to Josaphat, There is one man here [for us] to enquire of the Lord by; but I hate him, for he does not speak good of me, but only evil; Michaias son of Jemblaa. And Josaphat king of Juda said, Let not the king say so.

⁵ I cried to you, O Lord, and said, You are my hope, my portion in the land of the living.

¹⁸ Instruction removes poverty and disgrace: but he that attends to reproofs shall be honored.

²³ He that reproves a man's ways shall have more favor than he that flatters with the tongue.

¹ A reprover is better than a stiff-necked man: for when the latter is suddenly set on fire, there shall be no remedy.

⁵ For by the hearing of these a wise man will be wiser, and man of understanding will gain direction;

¹² In an ear-ring of gold a precious sardius is also set; [so is] a wise word to an obedient ear.

³ After two days he will heal us: in the third day we shall arise, and live before him, and shall know [him]:

⁹ And now, [my] son Solomon, know the God of your fathers, and serve him with a perfect heart and willing soul: for the Lord searches all hearts, and knows every thought: if you seek him, he will be found of you; but if you should forsake him, he will forsake you for ever.

²⁸ And he said to man, Behold, godliness is wisdom: and to abstain from evil is understanding.

¹⁰ The sinner shall see and be angry, he shall gnash his teeth, and consume away: the desire of the sinner shall perish.

⁷ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and [there is] good understanding to all that practise it: and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will set at nothing wisdom and instruction.

⁵ then shall you understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

³ God has taught me wisdom, and I know the knowledge of the holy.

¹³ Hear the end of the matter, the sun: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole man.

² That you⌃ may fear the Lord your God, keep you⌃ all his ordinances, and his commandments, which I command you today, you, and your sons, and your sons' sons, all the days of your life, that you⌃ may live many days.

² for length of existence, and years of life, and peace, shall they add to you.

¹⁶ For length of existence and years of life are in her right hand; and in her left hand are wealth and glory: out of her mouth proceeds righteousness, and she carries law and mercy upon her tongue.

²⁷ The fear of the Lord adds [length] of days: but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened.

² Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge? ³ For what matters it to the Lord, if you were blameless in [your] works? or is it profitable that you should perfect your way?

²¹ Be firm, I pray you, if you can endure; then your fruit shall prosper.

⁶ and if too you have transgressed much, what can you perform? ⁷ And suppose you are righteous, what will you give him? or what shall he receive of your hand?

²⁶ A man who labors, labors for himself, and drives from [him] his own ruin.

²² Therefore do not you⌃ rejoice, neither let your bands be made strong; for I have heard of works finished and cut short by the Lord of hosts, which he will execute upon all the earth.

²⁰ But the soul that sins shall die: and the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, nor shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the iniquity of the transgressor shall be upon him.

⁶ For she goes not upon the paths of life; but her ways are slippery, and not easily known.

¹¹ And she is fickle, and debauched, and her feet abide not at home.

⁹ [It is] better to dwell in a corner on the house-top, than in plastered [rooms] with unrighteousness, and in an open house.

¹⁹ [It is] better to dwell in a wilderness than with a quarrelsome and talkative and passionate woman.

¹⁰ and the woman meets him having the appearance of a harlot, that causes the hearts of young men to flutter. ¹¹ And she is fickle, and debauched, and her feet abide not at home. ¹² For at one time she wanders without, and at [another] time she lies in wait in the streets, at every corner.

³ She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying,

¹³ Then she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him, ¹⁴ I have a peace-offering; today I pay my vows: ¹⁵ therefore I came forth to meet you, desiring your face; [and] I have found you.

²⁵ Let not your heart turn aside to her ways : ²⁶ for she has wounded and cast down many, and those whom she has slain are innumerable. ²⁷ Her house is the way of hell, leading down to the chambers of death.

²⁷ For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow. ²⁸ For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.

⁴ Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that lack understanding she says,

⁶ And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes to look upon and beautiful to contemplate, and having taken of its fruit she ate, and she gave to her husband also with her, and they ate.

²⁴ And he came to a secret place, and took them from their hands, and laid them up in the house, and dismissed the men. ²⁵ And he went in himself and stood before his master; and Elisaie said to him, ²⁶ Whence [come you], Giezi? and Giezi said, Your servant has not been hither or there. And Elisaie said to him, Went not my heart with you, when the man returned from his chariot to meet you? and now you have received silver, and now you have received raiment, and olive yards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants. ²⁷ The leprosy also of Naiman shall cleave to you, and to your seed for ever. And he went out from his presence leprous, like snow.

¹⁸ Come, and let us enjoy love until the morning; come, and let us embrace in love. ¹⁹ For my husband is not at home, but is gone on a long journey, ²⁰ having taken in his hand a bundle of money: after many days he will return to his house.

³¹ For if you should set your eyes on bowls and cups, you shall afterwards go more naked than a pestle. ³² But at last [such a one] stretches himself out as one struck by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent.

²⁰ Such is the way of an adulterous woman, who having washed herself from what she has done, says she has done nothing amiss.

⁵ For they have taken counsel together with one consent: they have made a confederacy against you;

¹⁸ For she has fixed her house near death, and [guided] her wheels near Hades with the giants. ¹⁹ None that go by her shall return, neither shall they take hold of right paths, for they are not apprehended of the years of life.

⁵ For the feet of folly lead those who deal with her down to the grave with death; and her steps are not established.

²⁶ For the value of a harlot is as much as of one loaf; and a woman hunts for the precious souls of men.

²⁷ Her house is the way of hell, leading down to the chambers of death.
