¹⁴ They came and asked him, Master, we know that you are true, and you do not favor any man; for you are impartial, and you teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to give head-tax to Caesar or not?

²⁵ He said to them, Yes. And when Peter entered the house, Jesus anticipated and said to him, What do you think, Simon? from whom do the kings of the earth collect custom duties and head- tax? from their sons, or from strangers? ²⁶ Simon said to him, From strangers. Jesus said to him, Then the sons are free. ²⁷ But so as not to offend them, go to the sea, and throw out a hook, and the first fish which comes up, open its mouth and you will find a coin; take it and give it for me and for you.

¹⁷ Tell us, therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay head-tax to Caesar, or not?

⁴⁵ And immediately he drew near and said to him, My teacher, my teacher; and he kissed him.

²² Is it lawful for us to pay head-tax * to Caesar or not?

² And began to accuse him, saying, We found this man misleading our people, and forbidding to pay the head-tax to Caesar; and he says concerning himself that he is a King, even the Christ.

¹⁸ He who speaks of his own accord seeks glory for himself; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him, he is true, and there is no deception in his heart.

⁶ For, for this reason you pay head tax also: for they are ministers of God who are in charge of these things.

² For if I make you sad, who can make me happy, but him whom I made sad?

¹⁷ For we are not like those who corrupt the word of God: but according to the truth, and as men of God we speak through Christ in the sight of God.

¹ FOR this reason we are not weary of the ministry in which we are engaged, just as we are not weary of the mercies that have been upon us;

¹¹ Knowing therefore the fear of our LORD, we try in a persuasive way to win men; so we are very well understood by God; and I trust we are also understood by you.

¹⁶ And now from henceforth we do not know any one in the body: even though once we had known Christ in the body, we no longer know him now.

¹⁰ Do I now persuade men or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I tried to please men, I should not be a servant of Christ.

⁶ Now those who were considered to be important (what they are makes no difference to me, for God does not discriminate among men), even these very persons did not contribute additional knowledge to me.

¹¹ But when Cephas came to AnÆti-och, I reproved him to his face, because he was to be blamed. ¹² For before certain men came from James, Cephas ate with the Gentiles: but after they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he was afraid of them who belonged to the circumcision. ¹³ And all the other Jewish converts cast their lots with him on this issue, insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away by their dissimulation. ¹⁴ But when I saw that they were not following uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter, in the presence of them all, If you being a Jew live after the manner of Gentiles and not as do the Jews, why do you compel the Gentile converts to live as do the Jews?

⁴ But just as we have been examined by God to be entrusted with his gospel, even so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who searches our hearts.
