²⁰ And I turned to cause my heart to despair over all the labor which I did under the sun.

¹⁴ And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, so that he may send away your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved, I am bereaved.

¹¹ My days are past, my purposes are broken off, the desires of my heart. ¹² They set night for day; the light is near in the face of darkness. ¹³ If I wait for the grave as my home, I have made my bed in the darkness; ¹⁴ I have said to corruption, You are my father; to the worm, My mother and my sister! ¹⁵ And where then is my hope? And as for my hope, who shall see it?

⁶ Surely a man walks about like a shadow! Surely they are in an uproar in vain. He heaps up, and does not know who shall gather them. ⁷ And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.

¹⁹ If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

⁸ For, brothers, we would not have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength; so much so that we despaired even of life. ⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, so that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver; in whom we trust that He will yet deliver us,

³ so that no one should be drawn aside by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are appointed to them. ⁴ For truly, when we were with you, we told you before that we were going to suffer affliction, as it also happened, even you know.
