¹⁴ The murderer rising with the light kills the poor and needy, and in the night he is a thief.

¹⁴ And it happened in the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and draw back from him so that he may be stricken and die. ¹⁶ And it happened when Joab observed the city, he sent Uriah to a place where he knew brave men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city went out and fought with Joab. And some of the people of the servants of David fell. And Uriah the Hittite also died.

⁸ He sits in the hiding-places of the villages; in the secret places he murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly, like a lion in his den. He lies in wait to catch the poor; he catches the poor when he draws him into his net. ¹⁰ He crouches and bows, and the poor have fallen by his might.

¹ Woe to those who plot wickedness and prepare evil on their beds! When the morning is light they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet and seize fields; and houses, and take them away. And they oppress a man and his household, even a man and his inheritance.

³⁹ And know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and would not have allowed his house to be dug through.

⁷ Therefore do not be partakers with them. ⁸ For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light ⁹ (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), ¹⁰ proving what is acceptable to the Lord. ¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

² For you yourselves know accurately that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.

³ Remember then how you have received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.
