¹² And drawing near the gate of the city, even behold, one having died was being carried out, an only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable crowd of the city was with her.

² And He said, Take now your son, your only one, Isaac, whom you love. And go into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will name to you.

¹² And He said, Do not lay your hand on the lad, nor do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only one, from Me.

⁷ And behold, the whole family has risen against your handmaid. And they said, Deliver him who struck his brother so that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed. And we will destroy the heir also. And so they shall put out my coal which is left, and shall leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the face of the earth.

⁹ Arise, go to Zarephath which belongs to Sidon, and live there. Behold, I have commanded a widow to keep you there.

¹² And she said, As Jehovah your God lives, I do not have a cake, but only a handful of meal in a pitcher and a little oil in a jar. And behold, I am gathering two sticks, so that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, so that we may eat it and die.

¹⁸ And she said to Elijah, What do I have to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to call my sin to remembrance and to kill my son?

²³ And Elijah took the child and brought him down out of the room into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, See! Your son lives!

¹⁶ And he said, At this time, according to the time of life, you shall embrace a son. And she said, No, my lord, O man of God, do not lie to your handmaid.

²⁰ And he carried him and brought him to his mother. And he sat on her knees until noon and died.

¹³ The blessing of the perishing came on me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing.

¹⁰ And I will pour on the house of David, and on the people of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of prayers. And they shall look on Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be bitter over Him, as the bitterness over the first-born.

⁴² For he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay dying. But as He went, the people thronged Him.

⁵² And all were weeping and bewailing her. But He said, Do not weep; she has not died, but sleeps.

¹⁹ And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary in order to comfort them concerning their brother.

³⁹ And rising up, Peter went with them. When he had come, they brought him into the upper room. And all the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made while she was with them.

⁴¹ And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. And when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive.

⁴ But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to be godly to their own house, and give back to their forebears what is due them; for that is good and pleasing before God. ⁵ But she being really a widow, and having been left alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit orphans and widows in their afflictions, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
