¹⁷ And Saul said to David, Behold, my elder daughter Merab, I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me and fight Jehovah's battles. For Saul said, Do not let my hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

¹⁴ Therefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Jehovah, Waheb in Suphah and the valleys of the Arnon,

²⁰ And Moses said to them, If you* will do this thing, if you* will arm yourselves to go before Jehovah to the war,

²⁷ but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before Jehovah to battle, as my lord says.

²⁹ And Moses said to them, If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben will pass with you* over the Jordan, every man that is armed to battle, before Jehovah and the land will be subdued before you*, then you* will give them the land of Gilead for a possession,

⁷ The hand of the witnesses will be first upon him to put him to death and afterward the hand of all the people. So you will put away the evil from the midst of you.

²⁵ And the men of Israel said, Have you* seen this man who has come up? Surely to defy Israel he has come up. And it will be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel.

⁴⁷ and that all this assembly may know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is Jehovah's and he will give you* into our hand.

²¹ And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Therefore Saul said to David, You will this day be my son-in-law a second time.

²⁵ And Saul said, Thus you* will say to David, The king does not desire any wedding-money, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

²⁸ I beseech you, forgive the trespass of your handmaid. For Jehovah will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights the battles of Jehovah and evil will not be found in you all your days.

¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retreat from him, that he may be struck and die.

⁹ Why have you despised the word of Jehovah, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have slain him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.
