¹³ Go you*, inquire of Jehovah for me and for the people and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found, for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book to do according to all what is written concerning us.

⁵ You will not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them, because I, Jehovah your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of those who hate me,

²³ Take heed to yourselves, lest you* forget the covenant of Jehovah your* God, which he made with you* and make you* a graven image in the form of anything which Jehovah your God has forbidden you. ²⁴ For Jehovah your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
²⁵ When you will beget sons and son's sons and you* will have been long in the land and will corrupt yourselves and make a graven image in the form of anything and will do what is evil in the sight of Jehovah your God, to provoke him to anger, ²⁶ I call heaven and earth to witness against you* this day, that you* will soon utterly perish from the land to which you* go over the Jordan to possess it. You* will not prolong your* days upon it, but will be utterly destroyed.
²⁷ And Jehovah will scatter you* among the peoples and you* will be left few in number among the nations where Jehovah will lead you* away.

²³ The whole land of it is brimstone and salt, a burning. It is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Jehovah overthrew in his anger and in his wrath, ²⁴ even all the nations will say, Why has Jehovah done thus to this land? What is the meaning of the heat of this great anger?
²⁵ Then men will say, Because they forsook the covenant of Jehovah, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, ²⁶ and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that he had not given to them. ²⁷ Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book. ²⁸ And Jehovah rooted them out of their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation and cast them into another land, as at this day.

¹⁷ Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they will be devoured and many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us? ¹⁸ And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evil which they will have worked, in that they have turned to other gods.

⁷ But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, that we may inquire of him? ⁸ And the King of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, there is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Jehovah, Micaiah the son of Imlah, but I hate him, for he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Do not let the king say so.

¹¹ But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, that we may inquire of Jehovah by him? And one of the King of Israel's servants answered and said, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.

¹³ So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah, which he did not keep and also because he asked counsel of a spiritist, to inquire of it, ¹⁴ and did not inquire of Jehovah. Therefore he killed him and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.

⁶ For our fathers have trespassed and done what was evil in the sight of Jehovah our God and have forsaken him and have turned away their faces from the habitation of Jehovah and turned their backs.

²¹ Go, inquire of Jehovah for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found. For great is the wrath of Jehovah that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of Jehovah, to do according to all that is written in this book.

⁸ And they read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.
⁹ And Nehemiah, who was the governor and Ezra the priest the scribe and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, This day is holy to Jehovah your* God; do not mourn nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law.

³ And they stood up in their place and read in the book of the law of Jehovah their God a fourth part of the day and another fourth part they confessed and worshiped Jehovah their God.

¹⁴ The friendship of Jehovah is with those who fear him and he will show them his covenant.

⁷ You, even you, are to be feared. And who may stand in your sight when once you are angry?

⁶ We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.

⁶ Acknowledge him in all your ways and he will direct your paths.

¹² And you* have done evil more than your* fathers, for, behold, you* walk each one after the stubbornness of his evil heart, so that you* listen not to me.

¹ The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, when king Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchijah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying, ² I beseech you, inquire of Jehovah on our behalf. For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps Jehovah will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

¹⁷ then Zedekiah the king sent and fetched him. And the king asked him secretly in his house and said, Is there any word from Jehovah? And Jeremiah said, There is. He also said, You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

¹⁷ But we will certainly perform every word that has gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our rulers, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food and were well and saw no evil.

⁷ Our fathers sinned and are not and we have borne their iniquities.

³ Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face. Should I be inquired of at all by them?
⁴ Therefore speak to them and say to them, The lord Jehovah says thus: Every man of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face and comes to the prophet, I Jehovah will answer him in it according to the multitude of his idols,

¹ And it happened in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of Jehovah and sat before me. ² And the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, ³ Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, The lord Jehovah says thus: Is it to inquire of me that you* have come? As I live, says the lord Jehovah, I will not be inquired of by you*.

⁵ we have sinned and have dealt perversely and have done wickedly and have rebelled, even turning aside from your precepts and from your ordinances, ⁶ nor have we listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our rulers and our fathers and to all the people of the land.
⁷ O Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us shame of face, as at this day, to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, who are near and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you.
⁸ O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, to our rulers and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.

¹⁰ nor have we obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

⁷ Surely the lord Jehovah will do nothing unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.

⁶ Who can stand before his indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire and the rocks are broken apart by him.

²⁰ because no flesh will be made righteous in his sight from the works of the law; for through the law comes the full knowledge of sin.

¹⁵ For the law is working wrath; for where there is no law, neither is there transgression.

⁹ But I was previously living separate from the law, but when the commandment came, sin lived again through me and I died;

²² But become doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. ²³ Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he resembles a man considering his face (which was his from birth) in a mirror. ²⁴ For he has considered himself, and has gone away and immediately forgot what sort of man he was. ²⁵ But he who has peered into the complete law, the law of freedom, and has remained in it, this one, having not become a forgetful hearer, but a doer of works, this one will be fortunate in his doing.

¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath has come, and who is able to stand?
