³ And I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

²¹ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek of him a straight way for us and for our little ones and for all our substance.

⁵ And at the evening oblation I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn and I fell upon my knees and spread out my hands to Jehovah my God,

⁶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. And when he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water, for he mourned because of the trespass of those of the captivity.

⁴ And it happened, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept and mourned certain days. And I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven, ⁵ and said, I beseech you, O Jehovah, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments:
⁶ Let your ear now be attentive and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the sons of Israel your servants while I confess the sins of the sons of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father's house have sinned. ⁷ We have dealt very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses.
⁸ Remember, I beseech you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, If you* trespass, I will scatter you* abroad among the peoples, ⁹ but if you* return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your* outcasts were in the outermost part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.
¹⁰ Now these are your servants and your people whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. ¹¹ O Lord, I beseech you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name, and I beseech you, prosper your servant this day and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.
Now I was cupbearer to the king.

¹ Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the sons of Israel were assembled with fasting and with sackcloth and earth upon them.

¹ Now when Mordecai knew all that was done, Mordecai tore his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry. ² And he came even before the king's gate, for none might enter inside the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
³ And in every province, wherever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

¹⁶ Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan and fast you* for me and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I also and my maidens will fast in like manner. And so I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law. And if I perish, I perish.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting and my prayer returned into my own bosom.

¹⁰ When I wept in my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach. ¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a parable to them.

¹³ You will arise and have mercy upon Zion, because it is time to have pity upon her, yes, the set time has come. ¹⁴ Because your servants take pleasure in her stones and have pity upon her dust.
¹⁵ So the nations will fear the name of Jehovah and all the kings of the earth your glory. ¹⁶ Because Jehovah has built up Zion. He has appeared in his glory.
¹⁷ He has regarded the prayer of the destitute and has not despised their prayer.

¹² And in that day the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, called for weeping and for mourning and for baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

¹⁰ For Jehovah says thus, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you* and perform my good word toward you* in causing you* to return to this place. ¹¹ For I know the thoughts that I think toward you*, says Jehovah, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you* hope in your* latter end. ¹² And you* will call upon me and you* will go and pray to me and I will listen to you*.
¹³ And you* will seek me and find me when you* will search for me with all your* heart.

³ Call to me and I will answer you and will show you great things and difficult, which you do not know.

³⁷ The lord Jehovah says thus: For this, moreover, I will be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them. I will increase them with men like a flock.

¹⁰ And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his chamber toward Jerusalem) and he knelt upon his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he did formerly.

² In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three whole weeks. ³ I ate no desirable bread. Neither flesh nor wine came into my mouth. Neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

¹³ Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament, you* priests. Wail, you* ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you* ministers of my God. For the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from the house of your* God.

¹² Yet even now, says Jehovah, turn to me with all your* heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning.

⁶ And the news reached the king of Nineveh and he arose from his throne and laid his robe from him and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he made proclamation and proclaimed through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Do not let them feed, nor drink water, ⁸ but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and beast and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn each one from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.
⁹ Who knows whether God will not turn and relent and turn away from his fierce anger, that we not perish?

³⁷ and she had been a widow approximately eighty four years), who did not withdraw from the temple, giving-divine service with fasts and supplications night and day.

³⁰ And Cornelius said, Four days till this hour, I was fasting and praying in the ninth hour in my house, and behold, a man stood in my sight in bright apparel,

⁸ Draw near to God and he will be drawing near to you. Cleanse your hands sinners and purify your hearts you indecisive! ⁹ Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy be turned to gloom. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and he will be exalting you.

¹⁶ Therefore confess your trespasses to one another, and pray on behalf of one another, that you may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man prevails; much in its working. ¹⁷ Elijah was a man of like-feelings to us and he prayed with much prayer that it might not rain, and it did not rain upon the land for three years and six months. ¹⁸ And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rainfall and the land sprouted her fruit.
