¹ The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

⁴² And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. ⁴³ And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned instead of him.

³⁰ And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.

¹⁷ But as for the sons of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. ¹⁸ Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced-labor. And the sons of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. ¹⁹ So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.

⁷ And you have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah. And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore and let us take counsel together.

⁹ I have proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not refrain my lips. O Jehovah, you know.

²⁷ Behold, I have found this, says the Preacher, laying one thing to another, to find out the account,

⁸ Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, all is vanity.
⁹ And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words and what was written uprightly–words of truth.

¹ The Spirit of the lord Jehovah is upon me, because Jehovah has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind and the opening of bonds to those who are bound,

² Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city and preach to it the preaching that I bid you.

⁵ and he did not spare the ancient world, but guarded Noah, the eighth person spared, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of ungodly people;
