²² Joseph is a fruitful son, a fruitful son by a fountain, his daughters run over the wall.

²² And God remembered Rachel. And God listened to her and opened her womb. ²³ And she conceived and bore a son and said, God has taken away my reproach. ²⁴ And she called his name Joseph, saying, Jehovah adds another son to me.

⁵² And the name of the second he called Ephraim, because God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.

²⁷ And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two souls. All the souls of the house of Jacob, that came into Egypt, were seventy.

¹ And it happened after these things, that it was reported to Joseph, Behold, your father is sick. And he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

⁵ And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you into Egypt, are mine, Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, will be mine.

¹⁶ the messenger who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads and let my name be named on them and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

¹⁹ And his father refused and said, I know, my son, I know. He also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother will be greater than he and his seed will become a multitude of nations. ²⁰ And he blessed them that day, saying, In you will Israel bless, saying, God make you like Ephraim and like Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

¹ Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle. And when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle, ² the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the rulers of the congregation, saying, ³ Ataroth and Dibon and Jazer and Nimrah and Heshbon and Elealeh and Sebam and Nebo and Beon, ⁴ the land which Jehovah killed* before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle and your servants have cattle. ⁵ And they said, If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Bring us not over the Jordan. ⁶ And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, Shall your* brothers go to the war and will you* sit here? ⁷ And why do you* discourage the heart of the sons of Israel from going over into the land which Jehovah has given them? ⁸ Thus did your* fathers when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. ⁹ For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the sons of Israel, that they should not go into the land which Jehovah had given them.
¹⁰ And Jehovah's anger was kindled in that day and he swore, saying, ¹¹ Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, will see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob; because they have not entirely followed me, ¹² except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, because they have entirely followed Jehovah. ¹³ And Jehovah's anger was kindled against Israel and he made them wander to and fro in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of Jehovah was consumed.
¹⁴ And behold, you* have risen up in your* fathers' stead, an brood of sinful men, to consume yet the fierce anger of Jehovah toward Israel. ¹⁵ For if you* turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness and you* will destroy all this people.
¹⁶ And they came near to him and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle and cities for our little ones, ¹⁷ but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the sons of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁸ We will not return to our houses until the sons of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance. ¹⁹ For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and forward, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.
²⁰ And Moses said to them, If you* will do this thing, if you* will arm yourselves to go before Jehovah to the war, ²¹ and every armed man of you* will pass over the Jordan before Jehovah, until he has driven out his enemies from before him, ²² and the land is subdued before Jehovah, then afterward you* will return and be guiltless towards Jehovah and towards Israel and this land will be to you* for a possession before Jehovah. ²³ But if you* will not do so, behold, you* have sinned against Jehovah and be sure your* sin will find you* out. ²⁴ Build for you* cities for your* little ones and folds for your* sheep and do what has proceeded out of your* mouth.
²⁵ And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as my lord commands. ²⁶ Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and all our cattle, will be there in the cities of Gilead, ²⁷ but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before Jehovah to battle, as my lord says.
²⁸ So Moses gave charge concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel. ²⁹ And Moses said to them, If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben will pass with you* over the Jordan, every man that is armed to battle, before Jehovah and the land will be subdued before you*, then you* will give them the land of Gilead for a possession, ³⁰ but if they will not pass over with you* armed, they will have possessions among you* in the land of Canaan.
³¹ And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, As Jehovah has said to your servants, so we will do. ³² We will pass over armed before Jehovah into the land of Canaan and the possession of our inheritance is with us beyond the Jordan.
³³ And Moses gave to them, even to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon King of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og King of Bashan, the land, according to the cities of it with their borders, even the cities of the land all around.
³⁴ And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atroth-shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran: fortified cities and folds for sheep.
³⁷ And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities which they built.
³⁹ And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it and dispossessed the Amorites that were in it. ⁴⁰ And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh and he dwelt in it. ⁴¹ And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the towns of it and called them Havvoth-jair. ⁴² And Nobah went and took Kenath and the villages of it and called it Nobah, after his own name.

¹³ And of Joseph he said, Blessed of Jehovah be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew and for the deep that couches beneath, ¹⁴ and for the precious things of the fruits of the sun and for the precious things of the growth of the moons, ¹⁵ and for the chief things of the mountains of long-ago and for the precious things of the everlasting hills, ¹⁶ and for the precious things of the earth and the fullness of it and the good will of him who dwelt in the bush. Let it come upon the head of Joseph and upon the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers. ¹⁷ The first-offspring of his herd, majesty is his. And his horns are the horns of the wild-ox. With them he will push the peoples, all of them, even the ends of the earth. And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim and they are the thousands of Manasseh.

¹ And the lot came out for the sons of Joseph from the Jordan at Jericho, at the waters of Jericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill-country to Bethel. ² And it went out from Bethel to Luz and passed along to the border of the Archites to Ataroth, ³ and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, to the border of Beth-horon the nether, even to Gezer. And the goings out of it were at the sea. ⁴ And the sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.
⁵ And the border of the sons of Ephraim according to their families was thus : the border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth-addar, to Beth-horon the upper, ⁶ and the border went out westward at Michmethath on the north and the border turned about eastward to Taanath-shiloh and passed along it on the east of Janoah, ⁷ and it went down from Janoah to Ataroth and to Naarah and reached to Jericho and went out at the Jordan. ⁸ From Tappuah the border went along westward to the brook of Kanah. And the goings out of it were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim according to their families, ⁹ together with the cities which were set apart for the sons of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.
¹⁰ And they did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer, but the Canaanites dwell in the midst of Ephraim to this day and have become servants to do forced-labor.

¹⁴ And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, Why have you given me but one lot and one part for an inheritance, seeing I am a great people, inasmuch as until now Jehovah has blessed me? ¹⁵ And Joshua said to them, If you are a great people, get up to the forest and cut down for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill-country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.
¹⁶ And the sons of Joseph said, The hill-country is not enough for us and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth-shean and its towns and those who are in the valley of Jezreel.
¹⁷ And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, You are a great people and have great power. You will not have only one lot,

¹ The man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers is fortunate, ² because his delight is in the law of Jehovah and on his law he meditates day and night.
³ And he will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. And whatever he does will prosper.

¹ All who fear Jehovah are fortunate, who walk in his ways.

³ Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house, your sons like olive plants all around your table.

¹¹ And it had strong twigs for the scepters of those who bore rule. And their stature was exalted among the thick branches and they were seen in their height with the multitude of their branches.
