¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, ² Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge and fill himself with the east wind? ³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?
⁴ Yes, you do away with fear and hinder devotion before God.
⁵ For your iniquity teaches your mouth. And you choose the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Your own mouth condemns you and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.
⁷ Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills? ⁸ Have you heard the secret counsel of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? ⁹ What do you know, that we do not know? What do you understand, which is not in us?
¹⁰ With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than your father.
¹¹ Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you? ¹² Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes flash, ¹³ that against God you turn your spirit and let words go out of your mouth?
¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? And he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much less one who is abominable and morally-corrupt, a man who drinks unrighteousness like water!
¹⁷ I will show you. Hear me and what I have seen I will declare, ¹⁸ which wise men have told from their fathers and have not hid it, ¹⁹ to whom alone the land was given and no stranger passed among them: ²⁰ The wicked man travails with pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor. ²¹ Sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer will come upon him. ²² He does not believe that he will return out of darkness. And he is awaited by the sword. ²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ Because he has stretched out his hand against God and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty.
²⁶ He runs upon him with a stiff neck, with the thick studs of his bucklers, ²⁷ because he has covered his face with his fatness and gathered fat upon his loins. ²⁸ And he has dwelt in desolate cities, in houses which no man inhabited, which were ready to become heaps. ²⁹ He will not be rich, neither will his substance continue, neither will their possessions be extended on the earth. ³⁰ He will not depart out of darkness. The flame will dry up his offshoots and by the breath of God's mouth he will go away.
³¹ Let him not trust in vanity, making himself go-astray. For vanity will be his recompense. ³² It will be accomplished before his time and his branch will not be green. ³³ He will shake off his unripe grape as the vine and will cast off his flower as the olive tree.
³⁴ For the company of the hypocrites will be barren and fire will consume the tents of bribery. ³⁵ They conceive mischief and bring forth wickness and their heart prepares deceit.

¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that came upon him, they came each one from his own place–Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite–and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

⁷ And it was so, that, after Jehovah had spoken these words to Job, Jehovah said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends. For you* have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did just-as Jehovah commanded them and Jehovah accepted Job.

²⁶ Do you* think to reprove words, seeing that the speeches of a man who is desperate are as wind?

² How long will you speak these things? And how long will the words of your mouth be like a mighty wind?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your boastings make men hold their peace? And when you mock, will no man make you ashamed?

² What you* know, I also know; I am not inferior to you*.

¹ Ephraim feeds on wind and follows after the east wind. He continually multiplies lies and desolation. And they make a covenant with Assyria and oil is carried into Egypt.

¹³ Who is wise and knowledgeable among you? Let him show out of his good conduct his works in meekness of wisdom.

⁴ But you* are forgers of lies. You* are all physicians of no value. ⁵ O that you* would altogether be silent! And it would be your* wisdom.

² I have heard many such things. Miserable comforters are you* all.
³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer?

¹ Then Job answered and said, ² How you have helped him who is without power! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! ³ How you have counseled him who has no wisdom and plentifully declared sound-knowledge!

¹³ Your* words have been stout against me, says Jehovah. Yet you* say, What have we spoken against you? ¹⁴ You* have said, It is vain to serve God and what profit is it that we have kept his charge and that we have walked mournfully before Jehovah of hosts? ¹⁵ And now we call the proud fortunate. Yes, those who work wickedness are built up. Yes, they challenge God and escape.

³⁶ But I am saying to you, that every idle declaration, whatever men speak, they will be giving an account in the day of judgment concerning it. ³⁷ For you will be made righteous from your words and you will be sentenced from your words.

⁶ Let your speech always be in gratitude, having been seasoned in salt, that you may know how it is essential for you to answer each one.

⁴ he has been puffed up, knowing nothing, but being mentally diseased concerning debates and quarrels over words, out of which become: envy, strife, blasphemies, evil suspicions, ⁵ incessant wranglings of men who have been corrupted in the mind and who have been deprived of the truth, supposing that godliness is a method to earnings. Withdraw yourself from such.

¹³ So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah, which he did not keep and also because he asked counsel of a spiritist, to inquire of it, ¹⁴ and did not inquire of Jehovah. Therefore he killed him and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.

⁵ But now it comes to you and you faint. It touches you and you are troubled.
⁶ Is not your fear of God your confidence, the integrity of your ways your hope?

⁸ But as for me, I would seek to God. And to God I would commit my cause,

¹⁴ To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be from his friend, even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty and call upon God at all times?

¹ The transgression of the wicked man says within my heart, There is no fear of God before his eyes. ² Because he flatters himself in his own eyes, that his iniquity will not be found out and be hated.
³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

¹²⁶ It is time for Jehovah to work. They have made void your law.

¹⁴ And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howl upon their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They rebel against me.

¹⁰ And when a man's uncle will take him up, even he who burns him, to bring out the bones out of the house and will say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house, Is there yet any with you? and he will say, No, then he will say, Hold your peace, for we may not make mention of the name of Jehovah.

⁶ and those who are turned back from following Jehovah and those who have not sought Jehovah, nor inquired after him.

¹ Now he also spoke a parable to them, to show that it is essential for them to always pray, and not to be depressed;

³¹ Therefore, do we do-away-with the law through the faith? Let it not happen! But through the faith, we are establishing the law.

²¹ I am not nullifying the grace of God; for if righteousness is through the law, consequently, Christ died undeservedly.

¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness and the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.

²² It is all one thing. Therefore I say, He destroys the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge kills suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of the judges of it. If not he, who then is it?

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper and those who provoke God are secure. Into whose hand God brings abundantly.

¹⁹ You give your mouth to evil and your tongue frames deceit. ²⁰ You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son.

² Your tongue devises wickedness, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
³ You love evil more than good and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁴ You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue.

³ who have flashed their tongue like a sword and have aimed their arrows, even bitter words,

² Deliver my soul, O Jehovah, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.
³ What will be given to you and what will be done more to you, you deceitful tongue?

³ And they bend their tongue–their bow–for falsehood and they have grown strong in the land, but not for truth. For they proceed from evil to evil and they do not know me, says Jehovah.
⁴ You* take heed each one of his neighbor and trust you* not in any brother, for every brother will utterly supplant and every neighbor will go about with gossipers. ⁵ And they will deceive each one his neighbor and will not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies. They inwardly set up an ambush.

⁸ Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit. He speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he lies wait for him.

²¹ For evil reasonings travel from inside, out of the heart of men, such as : adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, ²² greedy-acts, wickednesses, treachery, unbridled-lusts, an evil eye, blasphemy, haughtiness, foolishness.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart.

²⁶ If anyone among you thinks himself to be outwardly religious, though he does not bridle his tongue but deceiving his heart; this one’s religion is futile.

⁵ So the tongue is also a little member and boasts of magnificent things. Behold, how-vast a forest it lights with such a small fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of unrighteousness. Thus the tongue is designated among our members as what stains the whole body and ignites the birth cycle and is ignited by hell. ⁷ For every nature of beasts and birds, of reptiles and sea-creatures, is tamed and has been tamed by human nature. ⁸ But no one from mankind is able to tame the tongue; it is an uncontrollable evil, full of deadly poison.

²⁰ Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am perfect, it will prove me perverse.

⁸ Surely you have spoken in my hearing and I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ I am clean, without transgression. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ You say, Behold, he finds occasions against me. He counts me for his enemy. ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks. He marks all my paths.
¹² Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just, for God is greater than man.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous and God has taken away my right. ⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am accounted a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.
⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up scorning like water, ⁸ saying, I have not sinned, nor committed unrighteousness, nor had fellowship with workers of wickedness to go with the profane. ⁹ For you should not say, There will be no visitation to a man; visitation is to him from the Lord.

² What is this you think in judgment? Who are you that you said, I am righteousness before the Lord? ³ That you said, What advantage will it be to you? And, What profit shall I have more than if I had sinned?

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

³ Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

⁸ So they will be made to stumble, their own tongue being against them. All who see them will wag the head.

³⁷ For you will be made righteous from your words and you will be sentenced from your words.

⁶⁵ Then the high-priest ripped his garments, saying, He has blasphemed. Why do we still have need of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy.

²² But he says to him, I will be judging you out of your own mouth, you evil bondservant. You knew that I am an austere man, lifting up from what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?

¹ And the man knew Eve his wife and she conceived and bore Cain and said, I have gotten a man with the help of Jehovah.

¹² With aged men is wisdom and in length of days understanding.

¹⁰ With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than your father.

⁴ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. ⁵ Who determined the measures of it, if you know? Or who stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Upon what were the foundations of it fastened? Or who laid the cornerstone of it ⁷ when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors when it broke forth, like it had gone forth out of the womb, ⁹ when I made clouds the garment of it and thick darkness a swaddling-band for it, ¹⁰ and marked out for it my bound and set bars and doors, ¹¹ and said, This far you will come, but no farther and here your proud waves will be stayed?
¹² Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dayspring to know its place ¹³ that it might take hold of the ends of the earth and the wicked be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is changed as clay under the seal and all things stand forth as a garment.
¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withheld and the high arm is broken.
¹⁶ Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Have you comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if you know it all.
¹⁹ Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And as for darkness, where is the place of it ²⁰ that you should take it to the bound of it and that you should discern the paths to the house of it? ²¹ You know, for you were born then and the number of your days is great!
²² Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
²⁴ By what way is the light divided, or the east wind scattered upon the earth? ²⁵ Who has cleft a channel for the water flood, or the way for the lightning of the thunder, ²⁶ to cause it to rain on a land where no man is, on the wilderness, in which there is no man, ²⁷ to satisfy the waste and desolate ground and to cause the tender grass to spring forth?
²⁸ Has the rain a father? Or who has bore the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who has engendered it? ³⁰ The waters hide themselves and become like stone and the face of the deep is frozen.
³¹ Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Can you lead forth the constellations in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her train? ³³ Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish the dominion of it on the earth?
³⁴ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you? ³⁵ Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go and say to you, Here we are? ³⁶ Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the jugs of heaven ³⁸ when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cleave fast together?
³⁹ Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions ⁴⁰ when they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provides for the raven his prey when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?

² Before the mountains were brought forth, or you had ever formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

²² Jehovah possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of long-ago. ²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth was, ²⁴ when there were no depths. I was brought out when there were no fountains abounding with water, ²⁵ before the mountains were settled, before the hills. I was brought out

²⁹ The secret things belong to Jehovah our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our sons until everlasting, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁶ and that he would show you the secrets of wisdom! For he is great in understanding. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

² No doubt but you* are the people and wisdom will die with you*.

⁵ O that you* would altogether be silent! And it would be your* wisdom.
⁶ Hear now my reasoning and listen to the pleadings of my lips.

⁴ as I was in the ripeness of my days, when the friendship of God was upon my tent,

¹⁴ The friendship of Jehovah is with those who fear him and he will show them his covenant.

³² Because the perverse man is an abomination to Jehovah, but his friendship is with the upright.

¹⁸ For who has stood in the council of Jehovah, that he should perceive and hear his word? Who has marked my word and heard it?

⁷ Surely the lord Jehovah will do nothing unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.

²⁵ Jesus answered and said at that time, I profess you, O Father, Lord of heaven and the earth, that you hid these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants.

¹¹ But he answered and said to them, It has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but it has not given to those men.

³⁵ that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, ‘I will open my mouth in parables. I will be uttering things which have been hidden from the conception of the world.’

¹⁵ I call you bondservants no more, because the bondservant does not know what his lord is doing, but I have called you friends, because all the things which I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become his counselor?

²⁵ (14:24) Now to the one who is able to establish you^\'b0 according to my good-news and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept-silent in times everlasting, \ulnone\nosupersub ²⁶ (14:25) but now having been manifested and by the prophetic Scriptures, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, has made known to all the nations, into the obedience of the faith; \ulnone\nosupersub

⁹ but as it has been written, ‘Things which the eye did not see and the ear did not hear and things which did not come up in the heart of man, which God prepared for those who love him.’
¹⁰ But God revealed them to us through his Spirit; for the Spirit is searching all things, even the depths of God. ¹¹ For who from men knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man, which is in him? So also, no one knows the things of God, except the Spirit of God.

¹⁶ For who has known the mind of the Lord, who will be lecturing him? But we have the mind of Christ.

³ But I have understanding as well as you*; I am not inferior to you*. Yes, who does not know such things as these?

³ How you have counseled him who has no wisdom and plentifully declared sound-knowledge!
⁴ To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit came out from you?

⁷ Are you looking at things according to their countenance? If anyone has confidence in himself to be Christ’s, let him count this again from within himself, that, just-as he is Christ’s, so are we also Christ’s.

⁵ For I reason to have come-short in nothing compared to the preeminent apostles.

²¹ I speak according to our dishonor, as though we were weak. But in whatever anyone may be daring (I speak in foolishness), I am also daring. ²² Are they Hebrews? I also. Are they Israelites? I also. Are they the seed of Abraham? I also. ²³ Are they servants of Christ? (I speak, as if having insanity) I am beyond them : in labors even-more, in lashes surpassingly, in prisons even-more, in deaths often. ²⁴ Five-times, I received forty lashes beside one from the Jews. ²⁵ I was lashed with rods three-times. I was stoned once. I was shipwrecked three-times. I have spent a night and a day in the depth of the sea; ²⁶ often in journeys, in perils of rivers, in perils of robbers, in perils from my own race, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils by false brethren; ²⁷ in labor and hardship, often in sleeplessness, in famine and thirst, often in fasts, in cold and nakedness. ²⁸ Plus there are those things which are outside, my every day pressure which is the anxiety for all the congregations. ²⁹ Who is weak and I am not weak? Who is offended and I am not on fire? ³⁰ If it is essential for me to be boasting, I will be boasting in the things which are from my weakness.

⁷ Remember the days of old. Consider the years of generations to generations. Ask your father and he will show you, your elders and they will tell you.

⁸ Because I beseech you, inquire of the former age and apply yourself to what their fathers have searched out ⁹ (for we are but of yesterday and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow). ¹⁰ Shall they not teach you and tell you and utter words out of their heart?

²⁰ He removes the speech of the trustworthy and takes away the understanding of the elders.

⁶ And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young and you* are very old. Therefore I held back and dared not show you* my opinion.
⁷ I said, Days should speak and multitude of years should teach wisdom.

³¹ The hoary head is a crown of glory. It will be found in the way of righteousness.

²⁴ Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and killed* Micaiah on the cheek and said, Which way did the Spirit of Jehovah go from me to speak to you?

⁸ But as for me, I would seek to God. And to God I would commit my cause, ⁹ who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number, ¹⁰ who gives rain upon the earth and sends waters upon the fields, ¹¹ so that he sets up on high those who are low and those who mourn are exalted to safety.
¹² He frustrates the devices of the crafty so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness and the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime and grope at noonday as in the night.
¹⁵ But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So a poor man has hope and unrighteousness stops her mouth.
¹⁷ Behold, fortunate is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise you the chastening of the Almighty. ¹⁸ For he injures and binds up. He wounds and his hands make whole.
¹⁹ He will deliver you in six troubles. Yes, in seven there will no evil touch you. ²⁰ In famine he will redeem you from death and in war from the power of the sword. ²¹ You will be hid from the scourge of the tongue. Neither will you be afraid of destruction when it comes.
²² At destruction and dearth you will laugh, nor will you be afraid of the beasts of the earth. ²³ For you will be in league with the stones of the field and the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. ²⁴ And you will know that your tent is in peace and you will visit your fold and will miss nothing.
²⁵ You will know also that your seed will be great and your offspring as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ You will come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in its season.

¹³ If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him, ¹⁴ if wickedness is in your hand, put it far away and do not let unrighteousness dwell in your tents.
¹⁵ Surely then you will lift up your face without spot. Yes, you will be steadfast and will not fear. ¹⁶ For you will forget your misery. You will remember it as waters that are passed away. ¹⁷ And your life will be clearer than the noonday. Though there is darkness, it will be as the morning. ¹⁸ And you will be secure, because there is hope. Yes, you will search about you and will take your rest in safety. ¹⁹ Also you will lie down and none will make you afraid. Yes, many will correspond with you.

⁸ Have you heard the secret counsel of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?

¹⁶ Yes, he would have allured you out of distress into a broad place, where there is no constraint and what is set on your table would be full of fatness.

³ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of the mercies and God of all encouragement is gracious; ⁴ who is encouraging us on our every affliction, that we may be able to encourage those who are in any affliction, through the encouragement of which we ourselves are encouraged by God. ⁵ Because just-as the sufferings of the Christ abound to us, so our encouragement also abounds through the Christ.

⁶ But God, who encourages the humble, encouraged us at the presence of Titus;

¹³ If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,

² Surely there are mockers with me and my eye dwells upon their provocation.

¹⁹ Do not let those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me. Neither let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause.

¹³ who winks with his eyes, who speaks with his feet, who makes signs with his fingers,

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth and walk in the ways of your heart and in the sight of your eyes. But know, that upon all these things God will bring you into judgment.

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why has the Adversary filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to pilfer part of the price of the parcel of ground? ⁴ When it remained unsold, was it not remaining yours? And when it was sold, was it not still in your authority? Why did you purpose this matter in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.

²² Therefore repent from this, your malice, and beseech God; if, then, the deliberation of your heart will be forgiven to you.

¹⁴ But each person is tempted, when he is pulled away and enticed by his own lust. ¹⁵ Thereafter when this lust has conceived, it bears sin, and sin, when it has matured, gives-birth to death.

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

²⁵ Because he has stretched out his hand against God and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty.

¹³ Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

¹³ Your* words have been stout against me, says Jehovah. Yet you* say, What have we spoken against you?

⁷ because the mindset of the flesh is hostility toward God; for it is not subject to the law of God, for neither is it able to be; ⁸ and those who are in the flesh are not able to please God.

² For we all trip in many things. If anyone does not trip in speech, this one is a mature man, is also able to bridle the whole body. ³ Behold we put the horses’bridles into their mouths that they are to be obedient to us, and we direct their whole body. ⁴ Behold also the ships, though being so-great and are driven by harsh winds, yet they are directed by a little rudder, wherever the impulse of the steersman is planning.
⁵ So the tongue is also a little member and boasts of magnificent things. Behold, how-vast a forest it lights with such a small fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of unrighteousness. ¹⁹ Now we know how-much, as many things as the law says, it is speaking to those in the law; in order that every mouth may be sealed and all the world may become under the sentence of God;

³ For we were also previously foolish, disobedient, being misled, serving in various lusts and sensual-delights, leading lives in malice and envy, spiteful, hating one another.

²⁷ Behold this, we have searched it, so it is. Hear it and know it for your good.

¹¹ Terrors will make him afraid on every side and will chase him at his heels.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short and the joy of the profane but for a moment? ⁶ Though his height mounts up to the heavens and his head reaches to the clouds, ⁷ yet he will perish forever like his own manure. Those who have seen him will say, Where is he?

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency he will be in straits. Terrors are upon him.

²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters. A tempest steals him away in the night.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You cast them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they have become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.

⁷ When the wicked spring up like the grass and when all the workers of unrighteousness flourish, it is that they will be destroyed forever,

²¹ Now on an appointed day, Herod dressed himself in royal apparel, and having sat upon the judicial-seat, he was publicly addressing them. ²² Now the public was shouting out, saying, This is a voice of a god and not of a man! ²³ But instantly a messenger of the Lord struck him, because he did not give God the glory and he expired, having become maggot-eaten.

¹⁰ Nor murmur, like some of them also murmured, and perished by the destroyer.

³ For whenever they are saying, Peace and security; then sudden utter-destruction stands by them, just-like the travail a woman has in her womb, and they may never flee away from it.

² a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, as the dawn spreads upon the mountains, a great people and a strong, there has not been the like, everlasting, nor will be any more after them, even to the years of generations to generations.

²⁰ Shall not the day of Jehovah be darkness and not light, even very dark and no brightness in it?

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of waste and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

²⁷ but a certain fearful expectancy of judgment and a zeal of fire which is about to eat the adversaries.

³⁷ And Babylon will become heaps, a dwelling-place for jackals, an astonishment and a hissing, without inhabitant.

¹¹ For the sun has risen together with the burning heat, and dried up the grass, and its flower fell and the beauty of its face perished. So shall the rich man also fade away in his pursuits.

¹ Come now you rich, weep, howling in your miseries, in those which are coming upon you. ² Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver have tarnished, and their tarnish will be for a testimony against you and will be eating your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in your^\'b0 last days.

⁹ By the breath of God they perish and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime and grope at noonday as in the night.

²¹ before I go where I will not return, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death, ²² the land dark as midnight, of the shadow of death, without any order and where the light is as midnight.

²² He does not believe that he will return out of darkness. And he is awaited by the sword.

²⁶ All darkness is laid up for his treasures. A fire not blown will devour him. It will consume what is left in his tent.

²⁰ saying, Surely those who rose up against us are cut off and the remnant of them, the fire has consumed.

⁴ but with righteousness he will judge the poor and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.
And he will kill* the earth with the rod of his mouth and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked.

³³ For a Topheth is prepared of old, yes, it is made ready for the king. He has made it deep and large. The pile of it is fire and much wood. The breath of Jehovah kindles it, like a stream of brimstone.

⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire has devoured both the ends of it and the midst of it is burned. Is it profitable for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was fit for no work. How much less, when the fire has devoured it and it is burned, will it yet be fit for any work!
⁶ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ And I will set my face against them. They will go forth from the fire, but the fire will devour them.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah when I set my face against them.

⁴⁷ And say to the forest of the South, Hear the word of Jehovah. The lord Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you and it will devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The flaming flame will not be quenched and all faces from the south to the north will be burnt by it. ⁴⁸ And all flesh will see that I, Jehovah, have kindled it. It will not be quenched.

¹² but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness–the weeping and the gnashing of teeth will be there.

¹³ Then the king said to the servants, When you bind him hand and foot, take him away and cast him out into the outer darkness–the weeping and the gnashing of teeth will be there.

⁴¹ Then he will also say to them at the left, Travel away from me, you those who have been cursed into the everlasting fire which has been prepared for the devil and his messengers:

⁴³ And if your hand offends you, cut it off. It is good for you to enter into life crippled, rather than having your two hands, and to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁴ where a maggot of them is not dead and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁵ And if your foot offends you, cut it off. It is good for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet, and to be cast into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁶ where a maggot is not dead and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁷ And if your eye offends you, cast it out. It is good for you to enter into the kingdom of God one-eyed, rather than having two eyes, and to be cast into the hell of fire, ⁴⁸ where a maggot of them is not dying and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁹ For everyone will be salted with fire and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.

⁸ giving vengeance in a fire of flame to those who do not know God and to those who are not obeying the good-news of our Lord Jesus Christ, ⁹ who will be suffering-punishment, the sentence of everlasting utter-destruction away from the face of the Lord, and away from the glory of his strength,

¹⁷ These people are waterless springs and clouds driven by a gale of wind to whom the blackness of darkness has been kept forever.

¹³ wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shames, misleading stars–for whom the blackness of darkness has been kept forever.

¹⁵ And a sharp two edged long-sword travels out from his mouth, in order that he might strike the nations with it and he will shepherd them with an iron rod and he tramples on the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

⁸ According to what I have seen, those who plow wickedness and sow trouble, reap the same.

¹⁶ With him is strength and wisdom. The deceived and the deceiver are his.

¹⁰ Do not trust in oppression and do not become vain in robbery. Because if riches increase, do not set your* heart on it.

⁸ He who sows unrighteousness will reap calamity and the rod of his wrath will fail.

¹⁰ For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not been mindful of the rock of your strength.
Therefore you plant pleasant plants and set it with foreign slips. ¹¹ In the day of your planting you hedge it in and in the morning you make your seed to blossom. But the harvest flees away in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

²⁰ He feeds on ashes. A deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

⁴ No man sues in righteousness and no man pleads in truth. They trust in vanity and speak lies. They conceive mischief and bring forth wickedness.

⁷ For they sow the wind and they will reap the whirlwind. He has no standing grain. The blade will yield no meal. Perhaps it yields, strangers will swallow it up.

⁸ Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

³ For if anyone thinks himself to be something, being nothing, he is deceiving himself.

⁷ Do not be misled. God is not ridiculed; for whatever a man sows, he will also be reaping this thing. ⁸ Because he who is sowing to his own flesh will be reaping corruption from his flesh, but he who is sowing to the Spirit will be reaping everlasting life from the Spirit.

⁶ Let no one deceive you with empty words; for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.

¹⁶ He is green before the sun and his offshoots go forth over his garden. ¹⁷ His roots are wrapped around the stone heap. He beholds the place of stones. ¹⁸ If he is destroyed from his place, then it will deny him, saying, I have not seen you. ¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way and out of the earth others will spring.

⁷ For there is hope of a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again and that the offshoots of it will not cease. ⁸ Though the root of it grows old in the earth and the trunk of it dies in the ground, ⁹ yet through the scent of water it will bud and put forth limbs like a plant.

¹⁶ His roots will be dried up beneath and above his limbs be will cut off.
¹⁷ His remembrance will perish from the earth and he will have no name in the street.

¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

⁵ God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up and pluck you out of your tent and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.
⁶ The righteous also will see and fear and will laugh at him, saying, ⁷ Behold, this is the man who did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
⁸ But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the loving kindness of God everlasting and forever.

²³ But you, O God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

¹⁷ Do not much wrong, nor be a fool. Why should you die before your time?

¹¹ When the limbs of it are withered, they will be broken off. The women will come and set them on fire, for it is a people of no understanding. Therefore he who made them will not have compassion upon them and he who formed them will show them no favor.

⁸ It was planted in a good soil by many waters that it might bring forth branches and that it might bear fruit that it might be a splendid vine.
⁹ You say, The lord Jehovah says thus: Shall it flourish? Shall he not pull up the roots of it and cut off the fruit of it, that it may wither? It will wither in all its fresh springing leaves, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots of it. ¹⁰ Yes, behold, being planted, will it flourish? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the beds where it grew.

¹⁶ Ephraim is struck. Their root is dried up. They will bear no fruit. Yes, though they bring forth, yet I will kill the beloved fruit of their womb.

⁵ I will be as the dew to Israel. He will blossom as the lily and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. ⁶ His offshoots will spread and his beauty will be as the olive tree and his smell as Lebanon.
⁷ Those who dwell under his shadow will return. They will revive as the grain and blossom as the vine. The scent of it will be as the wine of Lebanon.

⁶ If anyone is not abiding in me, he was cast outside like a branch and was dried up, and they gather them and cast them into the fire and it is burned.

³⁹ You will plant vineyards and dress them, but you will neither drink of the wine, nor gather, for the worm will eat them. ⁴⁰ You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you will not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olive will drop off.

⁹ The land mourns and languishes. Lebanon is confounded and withers away. Sharon is like a desert and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

¹³ and the stars of the heaven fell to the earth, like a fig tree, having cast its unripe figs when being shaken by a great wind.

³ And his sons did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain and took bribes and perverted justice.

³ Here I am. Witness against me before Jehovah and before his anointed: Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or of whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? And I will restore it to you*.

¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God. And the hope of the profane man will perish,

²² Those who hate you will be clothed with shame and the tent of the wicked will be no more.

¹⁴ if wickedness is in your hand, put it far away and do not let unrighteousness dwell in your tents.

¹ Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said,

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities. ⁶ For you have taken pledges from your brother for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ You have not given water to the weary to drink and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the land. And the honorable man, he dwelt in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁸ For what is the hope of the profane, though he gets him gain, when God takes away his soul?

¹² Because I delivered the poor who cried, also the fatherless who had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him who was ready to perish came upon me and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
¹⁴ I put on righteousness and it clothed me. My justice was as a robe and a diadem.
¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind and I was feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy and I searched out the case of he whom I did not know. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous and plucked the prey out of his teeth.

¹³ But those who are godless in heart lay up anger. They do not cry for help when he binds them.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid. Trembling has seized the profane. Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings? ¹⁵ He who walks righteously and speaks in uprightness. He who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes away his hands from taking a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of blood and shuts his eyes from looking upon evil.

¹¹ Inasmuch therefore as you* trample upon the poor and take exactions of wheat from him. You* have built houses of hewn stone, but you* will not dwell in them. You* have planted pleasant vineyards, but you* will not drink the wine of it.
¹² For I know how great are your* transgressions and how mighty are your* sins–you* who afflict the just man, who take a bribe and who turn aside the needy in the gate.

² The devout man has perished out of the earth and there is none upright among men. They all lie in wait for blood. They hunt every man his brother with a net.

⁵¹ and will flog him, and will place his part with the hypocrites–the weeping and the gnashing of teeth will be there.

¹⁴ Behold the wicked man, he travails with wickedness. Yes, he has conceived mischief and brought out falsehood.

⁴ No man sues in righteousness and no man pleads in truth. They trust in vanity and speak lies. They conceive mischief and bring forth wickedness. ⁵ They hatch adders' eggs and weave the spider's web. He who eats of their eggs dies and what is crushed breaks out into a viper.

¹³ You* have plowed wickedness. You* have reaped unrighteousness. You* have eaten the fruit of lies. For you trusted in your way, in the multitude of your mighty men.

¹⁵ Thereafter when this lust has conceived, it bears sin, and sin, when it has matured, gives-birth to death.
