¹ Moreover Elihu answered and said, ² What is this you think in judgment? Who are you that you said, I am righteousness before the Lord? ³ That you said, What advantage will it be to you? And, What profit shall I have more than if I had sinned? ⁴ I will answer you and your companions with you.
⁵ Look to the heavens and see. And behold the skies, which are higher than you. ⁶ If you have sinned, what do you effect against him? And if your transgressions be multiplied, what do you to him? ⁷ If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive of your hand?
⁸ Your wickedness is a man as you are and your righteousness is a son of man. ⁹ Because of the multitude of oppressions they cry out. They cry for help because of the arm of the mighty.
¹⁰ But none says, Where is God my maker who gives songs in the night, ¹¹ who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens? ¹² There they cry, but none gives answer, because of the pride of evil men.
¹³ Surely God will not hear an empty cry, nor will the Almighty regard it. ¹⁴ How much less when you say that you do not behold him. The case is before him and you wait for him!
¹⁵ But now, because he has not visited in his anger, nor does he regard transgression well, ¹⁶ so Job opens his mouth in vanity. He multiplies words without knowledge.

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest and multiplies my wounds without cause.

⁷ although you know that I am not wicked. And there is none that can deliver out of your hand?

¹⁷ although there is no violence in my hands and my prayer is pure.

⁶ know now that God has subverted me and has encompassed me with his net.
⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard. I cry for help, but there is no justice.

² As God lives, who has taken away my right and the Almighty, who has distressed my soul, ³ (For my life is yet whole in me. And the spirit of God is in my nostrils.) ⁴ surely my lips will not speak unrighteousness, nor will my tongue utter deceit.
⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you*. Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. ⁶ I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart will not reproach me so long as I live.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous and God has taken away my right.

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

³⁶ But I am saying to you, that every idle declaration, whatever men speak, they will be giving an account in the day of judgment concerning it. ³⁷ For you will be made righteous from your words and you will be sentenced from your words.

²² But he says to him, I will be judging you out of your own mouth, you evil bondservant. You knew that I am an austere man, lifting up from what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?

²¹ Though I were perfect, I do not regard myself. I despise my life.
²² It is all one thing. Therefore I say, He destroys the perfect and the wicked.

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water and make my hands ever so clean, ³¹ yet you will plunge me in the ditch and my own clothes will abhor me.

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. And if I am righteous, yet I will not lift up my head, being filled with shame and looking upon my affliction.

¹⁵ What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray to him?

² For what is the portion from God above and the heritage from the Almighty on high?

⁹ For you should not say, There will be no visitation to a man; visitation is to him from the Lord.

¹³ Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart and washed my hands in innocence,

¹⁴ You* have said, It is vain to serve God and what profit is it that we have kept his charge and that we have walked mournfully before Jehovah of hosts?

⁸ saying, I have not sinned, nor committed unrighteousness, nor had fellowship with workers of wickedness to go with the profane.

²⁰ Walk with wise men and you will be wise. But the companion of fools will be evil for it.

⁵ And he brought him outside and said, Look now toward heaven and number the stars, if you are able to number them. And he said to him, So your seed will be.

²⁷ But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you. How much less this house that I have built!

¹² Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

⁵ Behold, even the moon has no brightness. And the stars are not pure in his sight. ⁶ How much less man, who is a worm! And the son of man, who is a worm!

²⁶ Behold, God is great and we do not know him. The number of his years is unsearchable.

¹⁶ Do you know the balancing of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?

²² Out of the north comes golden splendor. God has upon him awesome majesty.
²³ O the Almighty, we cannot find him out. He is excellent in power. And in justice and abundant righteousness he will not afflict.

³ Because I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have established, ⁴ what is man that you remember him? And the son of man that you care for him?

²² It is he who sits above the circle of the earth and the inhabitants of it are as grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens as a curtain and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in, ²³ who brings rulers to nothing, who makes the judges of the earth as vanity.

⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your* ways and my thoughts than your* thoughts.

³ Jehovah is slow to anger and great in power and will by no means clear the guilty.
Jehovah has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

³⁶ But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul.
All those who hate me love death.

¹² If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. And if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

¹⁹ Do they provoke me to anger? says Jehovah and not themselves, to the confusion of their own faces?

¹⁴ But who am I and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? For all things come of you and of your own have we given you.

² Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself. ³ Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that you are righteous? Or is it gain to him that you make your ways perfect?

² You, my soul, have said to Jehovah, You are my Lord. I have no good beyond you.

¹⁰ So also you, whenever you have done all the things which were commanded to you, say, We are useless bondservants, because we have done what we are obligated to have done.

³⁵ Or who has first-given to him and it will be repaid to him again? \ulnone\nosupersub

² And I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you and make your name great and you will be a blessing.

²⁴ Perhaps there are fifty righteous men within the city. Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous men that are in it? ²⁵ Far be it from you to do such a thing, to kill a righteous man with a wicked man, that so the righteous man should be as the wicked man. Far be it from you. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
²⁶ And Jehovah said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous men within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sake. ²⁷ And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken it upon me to speak to the Lord, who am I but dust and ashes.
²⁸ Perhaps there will lack five of the fifty righteous men. Will you destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there.
²⁹ And he spoke to him yet again and said, Perhaps there will be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for the forty's sake.
³⁰ And he said, Oh let the Lord not be furious and I will speak. Perhaps there will be thirty found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
³¹ And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak to the Lord. Perhaps there will be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake.
³² And he said, Oh let the Lord not be furious and I will speak yet but this once. Perhaps ten will be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for the ten's sake. ³³ And Jehovah went his way as soon as he had left off speaking with Abraham and Abraham returned to his place.

²⁹ And it happened, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham and that he sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.

¹ But the sons of Israel committed a trespass in what was set apart. For Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took from what was set apart and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the sons of Israel.
² And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Bethel and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai. ³ And they returned to Joshua and said to him, Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and kill* Ai. Do not make all the people to toil there, for they are but few.
⁴ So there went up there of the people about three thousand men. And they fled before the men of Ai. ⁵ And the men of Ai killed* of them about thirty-six men. And they chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim and killed* them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water.

²⁰ Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in what was set apart and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.

⁸ Now therefore, take to you* seven bullocks and seven rams. And go to my servant Job and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering. And my servant Job will pray for you*, for him I will accept, that I not deal with you* after your* senselessness. For you* have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy.

³⁰ Then Phinehas stood up and executed judgment and so the plague was restrained.

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.

³⁰ And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.

¹² And he said to them, Take me up and cast me forth into the sea, so will the sea be calm to you*. For I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you*.

²⁴ saying, Do not fear, Paul; it is essential for you to stand-before Caesar and behold, God has granted to you all those who are sailing with you.

⁷ In faith, Noah, having been divinely-warned concerning things not yet seen, and being scared, prepared an ark for the salvation of his house; through which he condemned the world and he became an heir of righteousness according to faith.

²³ And it happened in the course of those many days, that the King of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage and they cried and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

⁷ And Jehovah said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, because I know their sorrows.

⁹ And now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to me. Moreover I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

¹ Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews. ² For there were who said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain that we may eat and live.
³ There were some also who said, We are mortgaging our fields and our vineyards and our houses. Let us get grain because of the dearth.
⁴ There were also who said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our sons as their sons. And behold, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already. Neither is it in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.

¹⁹ He leads priests away stripped and overthrows the mighty.

¹² From out of the populous city men groan and the soul of the wounded cries out. Yet God does not regard the foolishness.

²⁸ so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him and he heard the cry of the afflicted.

⁹ Or have you an arm like God? And can you thunder with a voice like him?

¹⁵ Break you the arm of the sinner and the evil man. His wickedness will be sought and will not be found.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy, now I will arise, says Jehovah. I will set him into the safety he breathes for.

² Because you are the God of my strength. Why have you cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

² Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint and moan, ³ from the voice of the enemy, from the oppression of the wicked. Because they shake down iniquity upon me and they persecute me in anger.

¹ Be merciful to me, O God, because man would swallow me up. Fighting all the day long he oppresses me. ² My enemies would swallow me up all the day long, because they are many who fight proudly against me.

³ Now a widow was in that city, and she was coming often to him, saying, Avenge me of my opponent. ⁴ And he did not wish to at that time, but after these things, he said in himself, Even if I do not fear God, and do not revere man; ⁵ yet because this widow is harassing me, I will avenge her, in order that she may not pester me, coming often for an end of her opponent.
⁶ But the Lord said, Hear with understanding what the judge of the unrighteousness says about himself.
⁷ Now, should God not do the avenging of his chosen who are crying to him day and night? Also, should he not have patience upon them?

¹³ So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah, which he did not keep and also because he asked counsel of a spiritist, to inquire of it, ¹⁴ and did not inquire of Jehovah. Therefore he killed him and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.

²² And in the time of his distress he trespassed yet more against Jehovah, this same king Ahaz. ²³ For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus, which killed* him. And he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, therefore I will sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel.

¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty and call upon God at all times?

²² For I do not know to give flattering titles, else my maker would soon take me away.

³ I will fetch my knowledge from afar and will bestow righteousness to my maker.

¹³ But those who are godless in heart lay up anger. They do not cry for help when he binds them.

⁸ Yet Jehovah will command his loving kindness in the daytime and in the night his song will be with me, even a prayer to the God of my life.

⁶ I call to remembrance my song in the night. I meditate with my own heart and my spirit makes diligent search.

⁶² At midnight I will rise to give thanks to you because of your righteous ordinances.

⁵ Let the holy ones rejoice in glory. Let them sing for joy upon their beds.

¹ Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near, when you will say, I have no pleasure in them,

²¹ And they will pass through it, greatly distressed and hungry. And it will happen that, when they will be hungry, they will be angry and curse by their king and by their God and turn their faces upward.

¹³ and have forgotten Jehovah your maker, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth and fear continually all the day because of the fury of the oppressor, when he makes ready to destroy? And where is the fury of the oppressor?

⁵ For your maker is your husband. Jehovah of hosts is his name. And the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth.

²⁵ But toward midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and the prisoners were their audience;

¹⁹ So-then those who are also suffering according to the will of God in good-doing, let them consign themselves, their souls, as to a faithful Creator.

²⁶ And God said, Let Us make man in our image–after our likeness–and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the cattle, and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.

⁷ And Jehovah God formed man out of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul.

⁸ But there is a spirit in man and the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding.

²² Behold, God does loftily in his power. Who is a teacher like him?

¹² The man whom you discipline is fortunate, O Jehovah and teach out of your law,

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save, even to Jehovah, but he answered them not.

⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain around their neck. Violence covers them as a garment.
⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness. They have more than heart could wish.
⁸ They scoff and utter oppression in wickedness. They speak loftily.

³ Have mercy upon us, O Jehovah, have mercy upon us, because we are exceedingly filled with contempt. ⁴ Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease and with the contempt of the proud.

²⁸ Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me,

¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High. ¹⁵ Yet you will be brought down to Sheol, to the utmost parts of the pit.
¹⁶ Those who see you will gaze at you. They will consider you, saying, Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms, ¹⁷ who made the world as a wilderness and overthrew the cities of it, who did not let loose his prisoners to their home?

³¹ But we know that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and if he is practicing his will, he hears him.

²² I beseech you, receive the law from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up, you put away unrighteousness far from your tents. ²⁴ Then you will lay up gold as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Yes, the Almighty will be your treasure and precious silver to you. ²⁶ For then will you delight yourself in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God.
²⁷ You will make your prayer to him and he will hear you and you will pay your vows.

⁸ For what is the hope of the profane, though he gets him gain, when God takes away his soul? ⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him?

²⁰ I cry to you and you do not answer me. I stand up and you gaze at me.

¹⁷ He has regarded the prayer of the destitute and has not despised their prayer.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

²⁹ Jehovah is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

⁹ He who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

¹ Keep your foot when you go to the house of God, for to draw near to hear is better than to give the sacrifice of fools. For they do not know that they do evil.
² Do not be rash with your mouth and do not let your heart be hasty to utter anything before God. Because God is in heaven and you upon earth. Therefore let your words be few. ³ Because a dream comes the greatness of the task and a fool's voice with a multitude of words.

¹⁵ And when you* spread forth your* hands, I will hide my eyes from you*. Yes, when you* make many prayers, I will not hear; your* hands are full of blood.

¹¹ Therefore Jehovah says thus, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they will not be able to escape. And they will cry to me, but I will not listen to them.

¹⁴ And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howl upon their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They rebel against me.

² They will cry to me, My God, we, Israel know you. ³ Israel has cast off what is good. The enemy will pursue him.

²² Yes, though you* offer me your* burnt offerings and meal offerings, I will not accept them, nor will I regard the peace offerings of your* fat beasts.

⁷ And while praying, do not be repetitious just-like the Gentile; for they think that they will be heard in their many words.

²¹ But he said to her, What do you wish?
She says to him, Say that these, my two sons, may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left hand in your kingdom.
²² But Jesus answered and said, You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup which I am about to drink, or to be immersed with the immersion to which I am about to be immersed?
They say to him, We are able.

³ You ask and do not receive, because you ask evilly, in order that you may spend it in your sensual-delights.

¹¹ Behold, he goes by me and I do not see him. He also passes on, but I do not perceive him.

¹⁹ If of strength behold, he is mighty! And if of justice, who will summon me?

⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard. I cry for help, but there is no justice.

³ O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat!

⁸ Behold, I go before, but he is not there and backward, but I cannot perceive him, ⁹ on the left hand, when he works, but I cannot behold him. He hides himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.
¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I will come out as gold.

¹² Deliver me not over to the will of my adversaries. Because false witnesses have risen up against me and such as breathe out cruelty.
¹³ I believe that I will see the goodness of Jehovah in the land of the living. ¹⁴ Wait for Jehovah. Be strong and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for Jehovah.

⁵ Commit your way to Jehovah. Trust also in him and he will do it. ⁶ And he will make your righteousness to go forth as the light and your justice as the noon-day.

⁵ My soul, wait in silence for God only, because my expectation is from him.

⁸ Trust in him at all times, you* the people. Pour out your* heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.

⁵ I have considered the days of long-ago, the years of ancient times. ⁶ I call to remembrance my song in the night. I meditate with my own heart and my spirit makes diligent search.
⁷ Will the Lord cast off everlasting? And will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness ceased forever? Does his promise come to an end in this generation? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he shut up his tender mercies in anger? Selah.
¹⁰ And I said, This is my infirmity, the change of the right hand of the Most High.

² Clouds and darkness are all around him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

¹⁸ And therefore Jehovah will wait, that he may be gracious to you*. And therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you*, for Jehovah is a God of justice. All those who wait for him are fortunate.

¹⁰ Who is among you* that fears Jehovah, who obeys the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness and has no light, let him trust in the name of Jehovah and rely upon his God.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against you will prosper. And every tongue that will rise against you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Jehovah and their righteousness which is of me, says Jehovah.

⁷ But as for me, I will look to Jehovah. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. ⁸ Rejoice not against me, O my enemy. When I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, Jehovah will be a light to me.
⁹ I will bear the indignation of Jehovah, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my case and executes judgment for me. He will bring me forth to the light and I will behold his righteousness.

³³ Who shall accuse anything against God’s chosen? It is God who makes righteous. ³⁴ Who is the one who condemns? Christ is the one who died, but rather, who was also raised up from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also is petitioning on our behalf.

¹² And Jehovah said to Moses and Aaron, Because you* did not believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the sons of Israel, therefore you* will not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.

⁵ But now it comes to you and you faint. It touches you and you are troubled.

¹⁴ How much less shall I answer him and choose out my words to reason with him?

¹⁵ Behold, he will kill me; I have no hope. Nevertheless I will maintain my ways before him.

¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me. They chase my honor as the wind and my welfare is passed away as a cloud.
¹⁶ And now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold upon me. ¹⁷ In the night season my bones are pierced in me and the pains that gnaw me take no rest. ¹⁸ By the great force my garment is disfigured. It binds me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the mud and I have become like dust and ashes.
²⁰ I cry to you and you do not answer me. I stand up and you gaze at me. ²¹ You have turned to be cruel to me. With the might of your hand you persecute me. ²² You lift me up to the wind. You cause me to ride upon it and you disintegrate me in the storm. ²³ For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living.
²⁴ However does not a man stretch out the hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help? ²⁵ Did I not weep for him who was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?
²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came. And when I waited for light, there came darkness. ²⁷ My heart is troubled and does not rest. Days of affliction have come upon me. ²⁸ I go mourning without the sun. I stand up in the assembly and cry for help.
²⁹ I am a brother to jackals and a companion to ostriches. ³⁰ My skin is black, and falls from me. And my bones are burned with heat. ³¹ Therefore my harp has turned to mourning and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.

¹¹ Shall your loving kindness be declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in destruction? ¹² Shall your wonders be known in the dark and your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
¹³ But to you, O Jehovah, I have cried and in the morning my prayer will come before you. ¹⁴ Jehovah, why do you cast off my soul? Why do you hide your face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors I am confounded. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath has gone over me. Your terrors have cut me off.

³² then I will visit their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes,

⁸ How shall I give you up, Ephraim? How shall I cast you off, Israel? How shall I make you as Admah? How shall I set you as Zeboiim? My heart is turned within me. My compassions are kindled together. ⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of my anger. I will not return to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in the midst of you and I will not come in wrath.

²⁰ And behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, till the day that these things should happen, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.

¹¹ Now indeed all disciplining does not seem to be a thing of joy for the present, but of sorrow; now later it gives peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised because of it. ¹² Hence straighten the drooping hands and the paralyzed knees;

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.

¹ After this Job opened his mouth and cursed his day.

² Behold now, I have opened my mouth. My tongue has spoken in my mouth.

⁸ Surely you have spoken in my hearing and I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ I am clean, without transgression. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ You say, Behold, he finds occasions against me. He counts me for his enemy. ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks. He marks all my paths.
¹² Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just, for God is greater than man.

³⁵ Job speaks without knowledge and his words are without wisdom. ³⁶ But surely not.
