¹ Then Job answered and said, ² Of a truth I know that it is so. But how can man be just with God? ³ If he is pleased to contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?
⁵ He who removes the mountains and they do not know it when he overturns them in his anger, ⁶ who shakes the earth out of its place and the pillars of it tremble, ⁷ who commands the sun and it does not rise and seals up the stars, ⁸ who alone stretches out the heavens and treads upon the waves of the sea, ⁹ who makes the Bear, Orion and the Pleiades and the chambers of the south, ¹⁰ who does great things past finding out, yes, marvelous things without number.
¹¹ Behold, he goes by me and I do not see him. He also passes on, but I do not perceive him.
¹² Behold, he seizes; who can hinder him? Who will say to him, What are you doing? ¹³ God will not withdraw his anger. The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.
¹⁴ How much less shall I answer him and choose out my words to reason with him? ¹⁵ Whom, though I were righteous, yet I would not answer. I would make supplication to my judge.
¹⁶ If I had called and he had answered me, yet I would not believe that he listened to my voice. ¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest and multiplies my wounds without cause. ¹⁸ He will not allow me to take my breath, but fills me with bitterness. ¹⁹ If of strength behold, he is mighty! And if of justice, who will summon me?
²⁰ Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am perfect, it will prove me perverse. ²¹ Though I were perfect, I do not regard myself. I despise my life.
²² It is all one thing. Therefore I say, He destroys the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge kills suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of the judges of it. If not he, who then is it?
²⁵ Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away. They see no good, ²⁶ They are passed away as the swift ships, as the eagle that swoops on the prey.
²⁷ If I say, I will forget my complaint. I will put off my sad countenance and be of good cheer, ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows. I know that you will not hold me innocent. ²⁹ I will be condemned. Why then do I labor in vain? ³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water and make my hands ever so clean, ³¹ yet you will plunge me in the ditch and my own clothes will abhor me.
³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment. ³³ There is no umpire between us who might lay his hand upon us both.
³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me and do not let his terror make me afraid. ³⁵ Then I would speak and not be afraid of him, for I am not so in myself.

⁴⁶ If they sin against you (for there is no man that sins not) and you are angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to the land of the enemy, afar off or near,

¹⁷ Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his maker?

³ And do you open your eyes upon such a one and bring me into judgment with you? ⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.

⁴ How then can man be just with God? Or how can he be clean who is born of a woman?

² Then the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was kindled. His anger was kindled against Job because he justified himself rather than God.

⁹ I am clean, without transgression. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous and God has taken away my right.

³ If you, Jehovah, should note iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

² And do not enter into judgment with your servant. Because in your sight no man living is righteous.

²⁰ because no flesh will be made righteous in his sight from the works of the law; for through the law comes the full knowledge of sin.

²⁰ Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am perfect, it will prove me perverse.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment. ³³ There is no umpire between us who might lay his hand upon us both.

² I will say to God, Do not condemn me. Show me why you contend with me.

³ O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat!
⁴ I would set my case in order before him and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me and understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would give heed to me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with him. So I should be delivered forever from my judge.

³⁵ O that I had someone to hear me (Behold, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me) and that I had the indictment which my adversary has written! ³⁶ Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder. I would bind it to me as a crown. ³⁷ I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him as a prince.

¹³ Why do you strive against him because he does not give account of any of his matters?

¹⁴ If he sets his heart upon himself, if he gathers his spirit and his breath to himself, ¹⁵ all flesh will perish together and man will turn again to dust.

² Shall he who quibbles contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.

¹² Who can discern his errors? Acquit me from hidden sins.

¹² because innumerable evils have encompassed me around. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up. They are more than the hairs of my head and my heart has failed me.

¹⁵ For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, also with him who is of a crushed and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the crushed.
¹⁶ For I will not contend everlasting, nor will I always be angry, for the spirit would faint before me and the souls that I have made.

²⁰ But-rather, O man, who are you who answers back against God? The molded thing will not say to the one who molded it, why did you make me so, will it?

⁸ If we should say that we have no sin, we are misleading ourselves and the truth is not in us.

²⁰ because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and he knows all things.

¹⁴ For this time I will send all my plagues upon your heart and upon your servants and upon your people, that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth. ¹⁵ For now I have put forth my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence,
and you have been cut off from the earth.
¹⁶ But indeed for this cause I have raised you up, to display in you my power and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.
¹⁷ As yet you exalt yourself against my people, that you will not let them go?

¹⁷ And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians and they will go in after them and I will get for me honor upon Pharaoh and upon all his army, upon his chariots and upon his horsemen. ¹⁸ And the Egyptians will know that I am Jehovah, when I have gotten for me honor upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots and upon his horsemen.

¹² And behold, God is with us at our head and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to shout an alarm against you*. O sons of Israel, do not fight against Jehovah, the God of your* fathers. For you* will not prosper.

¹⁰ And be it still my consolation, yes, let me rejoice (in pain that does not spare), that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

¹⁹ If of strength behold, he is mighty! And if of justice, who will summon me?

⁶ and that he would show you the secrets of wisdom! For he is great in understanding. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

¹³ With God is wisdom and might. He has counsel and understanding.

²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ Because he has stretched out his hand against God and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty.
²⁶ He runs upon him with a stiff neck, with the thick studs of his bucklers, ²⁷ because he has covered his face with his fatness and gathered fat upon his loins.

⁵ Behold, God is mighty and does not despise. He is mighty in strength of understanding.

⁹ Or have you an arm like God? And can you thunder with a voice like him?

²⁴ O Jehovah, how great are your works! You have made them all in wisdom. The earth is full of your riches.

⁵ to him who by understanding made the heavens, because his loving kindness is everlasting,

¹⁴ The man who fears always is fortunate, but he who hardens his heart will fall into mischief.

¹ He who, being often reproved, hardens his neck will suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy.

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Praise the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are his.

³⁴ And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven and my understanding returned to me. And I blessed the Most High and I praised and honored he who lives forever. For his dominion is an everlasting dominion and his kingdom from generation to generation. ³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he does according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. And none can stay his hand, or say to him, What are you doing?
³⁶ At the same time my understanding returned to me and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me and my counselors and my lords sought to me. And I was established in my kingdom and excellent greatness was added to me.
³⁷ Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are truth and his ways justice. And he is able to humble those who walk in pride.

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne. And they took his glory from him, ²¹ and he was driven from the sons of men. And his heart was made like the beasts and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed with grass like oxen and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men and that he sets up over it whomever he will.
²² And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, ²³ but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven. And they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor know. And the God in whose hand your breath is and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.
²⁴ Then the part of the hand was sent from before him and this writing was inscribed. ²⁵ And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE, God has numbered your kingdom and brought it to an end. ²⁷ TEKEL, you are weighed in the balances and are found wanting. ²⁸ PERES, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
²⁹ Then Belshazzar commanded and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold about his neck and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
³⁰ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

³³ O the depth of the riches, and of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and untraceable his ways!

²² Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? We are not mightier than him, are we?

⁸ The grace which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

¹⁹ and what is the surpassing greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of the dominion of his strength,

¹⁰ in order that now the multifaceted wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the authorities in the heavenly places through the congregation of believers. \ulnone\nosupersub

²⁰ Now to the one who is able to do, exceptionally beyond all things, what we are asking or are perceiving, according to the power which is working in us,

²⁴ Now to the one who is able to guard us from falling and to stand us in the sight of his glory, unblemished in gladness, ²⁵ to the only wise God our Savior, is the glory and majesty, dominion and authority, both now and forever. Amen.

⁹ He puts forth his hand upon the flinty rock. He overturns the mountains by the roots.

² Therefore we will not fear, though the earth changes and though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas,

⁸ the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God, Sinai at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

⁶ You* mountains, that you* skip like rams, you* little hills, like lambs?

¹² Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and measured out heaven with the span and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?

⁶ He stood and measured the earth. He beheld and drove apart the nations. And the eternal mountains were scattered. The everlasting hills bowed. His traveling are everlasting.

¹⁰ The mountains saw you and were afraid. The tempest of waters passed by. The deep uttered its voice and lifted up its hands on high.

⁷ Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain and he will bring forth the top stone with shouts of Favor, favor, to it.

⁴ And his feet will stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives will be split in the midst of it toward the east and toward the west, a very great valley. And half of the mountain will remove toward the north and half of it toward the south.
⁵ And you* will flee by the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach to Azel. Yes, you* will flee, just as you* fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. And Jehovah my God will come and all the holy ones with you.

²¹ Now Jesus answered and said to them, Assuredly I am saying to you, If you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only be doing the miracle of the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, Be lifted up and cast yourself into the sea, it will happen.

⁵¹ And behold, the curtain of the temple was split-apart into two pieces, from the top to the bottom, and the earth shook, and the rocks were split-apart;

¹¹ and there will be great earthquakes in different places and famines and plagues. There will be both terrors and great signs from heaven.

² And if I have the gift of prophecy and if I know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so-then to remove mountains, but if I do not have love, I am nothing.

¹⁴ And the heaven departed like a scroll being coiled up, and every mountain and every island were moved out of their places.

¹³ And in that day there became a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell, and the names of seven thousand men were killed in the earthquake and the rest became fearful and gave glory to the God of heaven.

¹⁸ And there became lightnings and thunders and voices, and there became a great earthquake, such-as has not happened from which time men were born upon the earth, so-great an earthquake–so great! ¹⁹ And the great city became divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and Babylon the great was remembered in God’s sight, to give to her the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. ²⁰ And every island fled away and the mountains were not found.

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust, he lifts up the needy from the dunghill, to make them sit with rulers and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah's and he has set the world upon them.

¹¹ The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his rebuke.

⁴ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. ⁵ Who determined the measures of it, if you know? Or who stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Upon what were the foundations of it fastened? Or who laid the cornerstone of it ⁷ when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

³ when the earth and all the inhabitants of it are dissolved. I have set up the pillars of it. Selah.

⁷ Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,

¹⁹ And men will go into the caves of the rocks and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

²¹ to go into the caverns of the rocks and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Jehovah and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

¹³ Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble and the earth will be shaken out of its place, in the wrath of Jehovah of hosts and in the day of his fierce anger.
¹⁴ And it will happen, that as the chased roe and as sheep that no man gathers, they will turn every man to his own people and will flee every man to his own land.

¹ Behold, Jehovah makes the earth empty and makes it waste and turns it upside down and scatters abroad the inhabitants of it.

¹⁹ The earth is utterly broken. The earth is torn apart. The earth is shaken violently. ²⁰ The earth will stagger like a drunken man and will sway to and fro like a hammock. And the transgression of it will be heavy upon it and it will fall and not rise again.

²⁴ I beheld the mountains, and behold, they trembled and all the hills moved to and fro.

¹⁰ The earth quakes before them. The heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened and the stars withdraw their shining.

⁶ For Jehovah of hosts says thus: Yet once, it is a little while and I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land.

²¹ Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth.

²⁶ whose voice then shook the earth. But now he has promised, saying, ‘Still once for all, I do not only shake the earth, but also the heaven.’

¹¹ And I saw a great white throne and the one who sits upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.

²¹ And Jehovah said to Moses, Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. ²² And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days,

¹² Then Joshua spoke to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel. And he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still upon Gibeon and you, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

⁷ He seals up the hand of every man, that all men whom he has made may know it.

¹² Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dayspring to know its place ¹³ that it might take hold of the ends of the earth and the wicked be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is changed as clay under the seal and all things stand forth as a garment.
¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withheld and the high arm is broken.

¹⁹ Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And as for darkness, where is the place of it ²⁰ that you should take it to the bound of it and that you should discern the paths to the house of it?

¹⁰ For the stars of heaven and the constellations of it will not give their light. The sun will be darkened in its going forth and the moon will not cause its light to shine.

⁷ And when I will extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and make the stars of it dark. I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon will not give its light. ⁸ All the bright lights of heaven I will make dark over you and set darkness upon your land, says the lord Jehovah.

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he does according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. And none can stay his hand, or say to him, What are you doing?

¹³ For behold, he who forms the mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what is his thought, who makes the morning darkness and treads upon the high places of the earth–Jehovah, the God of hosts, is his name.

⁹ And it will happen in that day, says the lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon and I will darken the earth in the clear day.

²⁹ But immediately after the affliction of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not be giving her radiance, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;

²⁵ And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and dismay of nations upon the earth, in perplexity from the noisy sea and the noisy billows; ²⁶ men passing-out from fear and expectation of the things which are coming upon the inhabited-earth; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

⁶ And God said, Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters and let it divide the waters from the waters. ⁷ And God made the expanse and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse. And it was so.

¹⁸ Can you with him spread out the sky, which is strong as a molten mirror?

¹¹ and said, This far you will come, but no farther and here your proud waves will be stayed?

¹⁶ Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

⁶ The heavens made were by the word of Jehovah and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

¹⁹ Your way was in the sea and your paths in the great waters. And your footsteps were not known.

³ The floods have lifted up, O Jehovah, the floods have lifted up their voice, the floods lift up their waves. ⁴ Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, Jehovah on high is mighty.

² who covers yourself with light as with a garment, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, ³ who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters, who makes the clouds his chariot, who walks upon the wings of the wind,

²² It is he who sits above the circle of the earth and the inhabitants of it are as grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens as a curtain and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in,

⁵ Thus says God, Jehovah, he who created the heavens and stretched them forth, he who spread abroad the earth and what comes out of it, he who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it,

²⁴ Jehovah says thus, your Redeemer and he who formed you from the womb: I am Jehovah, who makes all things, who stretches forth the heavens alone, who spreads abroad the earth (who is with me?),

¹¹ Thus you* will say to them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.

¹ The burden of the word of Jehovah concerning Israel.
Jehovah says thus, who stretches forth the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him:

²⁵ Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking upon the sea. ²⁶ And when the disciples saw him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying, It is an apparition, and they cried out from their fear.
²⁷ But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Have courage; it is I; do not be afraid.
²⁸ Now Peter having answered to him, said, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you upon the waters.
²⁹ Now he said, Come.
And Peter went down from the ship, and walked upon the waters to go toward Jesus. ³⁰ But he was afraid, seeing the strong wind, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

¹⁹ Therefore, having rowed approximately twenty five or thirty furlongs, they view Jesus walking upon the sea and happening to be near the ship and they were afraid.

¹⁶ And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night and also the stars.

⁹ Out of the chamber of the south comes the storm and cold out of the north.

³¹ Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Can you lead forth the constellations in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her train? ³³ Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish the dominion of it on the earth?
³⁴ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you? ³⁵ Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go and say to you, Here we are? ³⁶ Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the jugs of heaven ³⁸ when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cleave fast together?
³⁹ Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions ⁴⁰ when they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provides for the raven his prey when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?

³ who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters, who makes the clouds his chariot, who walks upon the wings of the wind,

¹³ He waters the mountains from his chambers. The earth is filled with the fruit of your works.

⁴ He counts the number of the stars. He calls them all by names.

⁸ seek he who makes the Pleiades and Orion and turns the shadow of death into the morning and makes the day dark with night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name),

¹³ From where we went around and arrived at Rhegium and after one day a south wind came upon us and on the second day we came to Puteoli;

¹¹ Who is like you, O Jehovah, among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

⁹ who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number,

¹² He stirs up the sea with his power and by his understanding he slays through Rahab. ¹³ By his Spirit the heavens are garnished. His hand has pierced the swift serpent.
¹⁴ Behold, these are but the end of his ways. And how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?

²³ O the Almighty, we cannot find him out. He is excellent in power. And in justice and abundant righteousness he will not afflict.

¹⁵ My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all the day, because I do not know the numbers.

¹⁸ Praise Jehovah God, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things.

⁴ to him who alone does great wonders, because his loving kindness is everlasting,

¹¹ He has made everything beautiful in its time.
Also he has set the everlasting in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.

²⁶ Lift up your* eyes on high and see who has created these, who brings out their host by number. He calls them all by name, by the greatness of his might. And because he is strong in power, not one is lacking.
²⁷ Why do you say, O Jacob and speak, O Israel, My way is hid from Jehovah. And the justice due to me is passed away from my God?
²⁸ Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, nor is weary. There is no searching of his understanding.

² It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me. ³ How great are his signs and how mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and his dominion is from generation to generation.

⁸ Behold, I go before, but he is not there and backward, but I cannot perceive him, ⁹ on the left hand, when he works, but I cannot behold him. He hides himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.

¹⁴ How much less when you say that you do not behold him. The case is before him and you wait for him!

¹⁶ he who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no one from man has seen, nor is able to see: to whom is honor and everlasting dominion. Amen.

¹⁰ If he passes through and shuts up and all to judgment, then who can hinder him?

¹³ But he is in one mind and who can turn him? And what his soul desires, even that he does.

²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? And when he hides his face, who then can behold him? It is the same whether to a nation, or to a man,

⁹ Woe to him who contends with his maker, a earthen vessel among the earthen vessels of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashions it, What are you making? or your work, He has no hands?

⁶ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you* as this potter? says Jehovah. Behold, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are you* in my hand, O house of Israel.

²⁶ Yes, Father, because thus it became a delight before you.

¹⁵ Or is it not legal for me to do what I will in the things which are mine? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?

¹⁸ Therefore consequently, he shows-mercy on whom he wills and he hardens whom he wills.
¹⁹ Therefore you will say to me, Why is he still finding-fault? For who is standing against his will? ²⁰ But-rather, O man, who are you who answers back against God? The molded thing will not say to the one who molded it, why did you make me so, will it?

³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become his counselor?

¹¹ In him in whom, we were also made an inheritance, having been predetermined according to the purpose of the one who is working all things after the plan of his will.

¹² He stirs up the sea with his power and by his understanding he slays through Rahab.

⁹ Or have you an arm like God? And can you thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ Deck yourself now with excellency and dignity and array yourself with honor and majesty. ¹¹ Pour forth the overflowing of your anger and look upon everyone who is proud and humble him.

¹⁰ You have broken Rahab in pieces, as a wounded man. You have scattered your enemies with the arm of your strength.

⁷ For Egypt helps in vain and to no purpose. Therefore I have called her Rahab who sits still.

² Yet he also is wise and will bring evil and will not call back his words, but will arise against the house of the evildoers and against the help of those who work wickedness.
³ Now the Egyptians are men and not God and their horses flesh and not spirit. And when Jehovah will stretch out his hand, both he who helps will stumble and he who is helped will fall and they will all be consumed together.

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Jehovah. Awake, as in the days of long-ago, the generations of everlasting. Is it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the monster?

⁶ But he is giving greater grace. Hence the Scripture says, ‘God resists the haughty, but gives grace to the humble.’
⁷ Therefore, be subject to God and stand against the devil, and he will be fleeing away from you.

²⁷ But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you. How much less this house that I have built!

¹⁹ How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!

³ If he is pleased to contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

⁴ For you say, My doctrine is pure and I am clean in your eyes. ⁵ But O that God would speak and open his lips against you,

⁴ I would set my case in order before him and fill my mouth with arguments.

⁷ There the upright might reason with him. So I should be delivered forever from my judge.

⁶ How much less man, who is a worm! And the son of man, who is a worm!

⁵ If you can, answer you me. Set your words in order before me. Stand forth.

³⁸ whatever prayer and supplication be made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who will know every man the plague of his own heart and spread forth his hands toward this house, ³⁹ then hear you in heaven your dwelling-place and forgive and do and render to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know (for you, even you only, know the hearts of all the sons of men),

¹³ And he prayed to him. And he was entreated of him and heard his supplication and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that Jehovah he was God.

⁸ But as for me, I would seek to God. And to God I would commit my cause,

⁵ if you would seek diligently to God and make your supplication to the Almighty,

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. And if I am righteous, yet I will not lift up my head, being filled with shame and looking upon my affliction.

²⁷ You will make your prayer to him and he will hear you and you will pay your vows.

³¹ For has any said to God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more; ³² teach me what I do not see; if I have done unrighteousness, I will do it no more?

⁹ They will come with weeping. And I will lead them with supplications. I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they will not stumble. For I am a father to Israel and Ephraim is my firstborn.

³ And I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

¹⁸ O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and behold our desolations and the city which is called by your name. For we do not present our supplications before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies' sake.

⁴ For I have been conscious of nothing in myself, but I have not been made righteous in this thing. But he who is judging me is the Lord.

²³ who, being reviled, was not reviling again in return; when suffering, was not threatening, (but was giving himself to the one who judges righteously),

⁹ And Moses spoke so to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses for anguish of spirit and for cruel bondage.

¹³ And Gideon said to him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, then why has all this befallen us? And where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? But now Jehovah has cast us off and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

²⁴ I smiled on them when they had no confidence and they did not cast down the light of my countenance.

⁶ I called upon Jehovah in my distress and cried to my God. He heard my voice out of his temple and my cry before him came into his ears.

¹⁸ If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear. ¹⁹ But truly God has heard. He has attended to the voice of my prayer.
²⁰ Kneel to God, who has not turned away my prayer, nor his loving kindness from me.

¹ I love Jehovah because he hears my voice and my supplications. ² Because he has inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call as long as I live.

¹ When Jehovah brought back those who returned to Zion, we were like those who dream.

⁴¹ But still disbelieving this from joy and marveling; he said to them, Do you have anything edible here?

¹⁴ And having recognized the voice of Peter, full of joy, she did not open the gate, but ran in and reported Peter to be standing before the gate.
¹⁵ But they said to her, You are insane.
But she was stoutly affirming to have this so.
And they were saying, It is his messenger.
¹⁶ But Peter was remaining and kept knocking. Now having opened the door, they saw him and were astonished.

¹⁴ that there came a messenger to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, ¹⁵ and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them away. Yes, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword and only I alone have escaped to tell you.
¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and has burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them and only I alone have escaped to tell you.
¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have taken them away, yes and slain the servants with the edge of the sword and only I alone have escaped to tell you.
¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house. ¹⁹ And behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and killed* the four corners of the house and it fell upon the young men and they are dead and only I alone have escaped to tell you.

³ And Jehovah said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil. And he still holds fast his integrity, although you moved me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah and killed* Job with severe boils from the sole of his foot to his crown.

¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights. And none spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹² I was at ease and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his mark.

¹⁴ He breaks me with breach upon breach. He runs upon me like a giant.

¹⁷ although there is no violence in my hands and my prayer is pure.

²² You lift me up to the wind. You cause me to ride upon it and you disintegrate me in the storm.

⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am accounted a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.

³ Yes, none who wait for you will be put to shame. They will be put to shame who deal treacherously without cause.

⁵ The voice of Jehovah breaks the cedars. Yes, Jehovah breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

⁷ Deep calls to deep at the voice of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have gone over me.

¹⁵ So pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm.

¹⁷ And I will make justice the line and righteousness the plummet.
And the hail will sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters will overflow the hiding place.

¹⁹ Behold, the tempest of Jehovah, wrath, has gone forth, yes, a whirling tempest. It will burst upon the head of the wicked.

¹³ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: I will even tear it with a stormy wind in my wrath and there will be an overflowing shower in my anger and great hailstones in wrath to consume it.

²⁷ and the rain came down and the rivers came up and the winds blew and hit that house and it fell and great was its fall.

²⁰ He will not fracture a bruised reed and he will not quench a smoking wick, until he should cast out the judgment to victory.

³ Jesus answered, Neither did this one sin, nor his parents, but in order that the works of God should be manifest in him.

²⁵ But this happened, in order that the word might be fulfilled that has been written in their law, ‘They hated me undeservedly.’

²⁰ Why is light given to him who is in misery and life to the bitter in soul,

¹⁹ How long will you not look away from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?

² As God lives, who has taken away my right and the Almighty, who has distressed my soul,

¹³ O spare me, that I may recover strength before I go from here and be no more.

⁷ Your wrath lays hard upon me and you have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors I am confounded. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath has gone over me. Your terrors have cut me off.
¹⁷ They came all around me like water all the day long. They encompassed me around together. ¹⁸ You have put beloved and friend far from me and my acquaintances into darkness.

³ Surely he turns his hand against me, again and again all the day.

¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness. He has sated me with wormwood.

¹⁸ And I said, My strength has perished and my expectation from Jehovah.
¹⁹ Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

¹¹ Now indeed all disciplining does not seem to be a thing of joy for the present, but of sorrow; now later it gives peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised because of it.

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?

³⁵ O that I had someone to hear me (Behold, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me) and that I had the indictment which my adversary has written!

⁵ If you can, answer you me. Set your words in order before me. Stand forth. ⁶ Behold, I am toward God even as you are. I also am formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror will not make you afraid, nor will my pressure be heavy upon you.

¹⁷ But you have fulfilled the judgment of the wicked. Judgment and justice take hold, ¹⁸ and there will be wrath upon the impious because of the ungodliness of bribes which the unrighteous receive.
¹⁹ Will your cry not avail in distress, or all the forces of strength?

⁹ Or have you an arm like God? And can you thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ Deck yourself now with excellency and dignity and array yourself with honor and majesty.

¹¹ God has spoken once, twice I have heard this, that power belongs to God.

¹³ And do not bring us into temptation, but rescue us from the evil one, because yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

²⁵ Because the foolish things of God are wiser than men, and the weakness of God is mightier than men.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job and that man was perfect and upright and one who feared God and turned away from evil.

² Of a truth I know that it is so. But how can man be just with God?

⁵ For your iniquity teaches your mouth. And you choose the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Your own mouth condemns you and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job because he was righteous in his own eyes. ² Then the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was kindled. His anger was kindled against Job because he justified himself rather than God.

⁸ Surely you have spoken in my hearing and I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ I am clean, without transgression. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ You say, Behold, he finds occasions against me. He counts me for his enemy. ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks. He marks all my paths.
¹² Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just, for God is greater than man. ¹³ Why do you strive against him because he does not give account of any of his matters?

³⁵ Job speaks without knowledge and his words are without wisdom.

¹⁶ so Job opens his mouth in vanity. He multiplies words without knowledge.

¹⁹ Transgression is not lacking in the multitude of words, but he who refrains his lips does wisely.

²⁰ He who has a wayward heart finds no good and he who has a perverse tongue falls into mischief.

⁵ Then I said, Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of hosts.

³⁶ But I am saying to you, that every idle declaration, whatever men speak, they will be giving an account in the day of judgment concerning it. ³⁷ For you will be made righteous from your words and you will be sentenced from your words.

²⁹ But he, wishing to make himself righteous, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

¹⁵ And he said to them, You are those who are making yourselves righteous in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts, because what is exalted among men is an abomination in God’s sight.

¹² Not that I have already received it or have already been completed in this, but I am pursuing it, if I might grab that for which I was also grabbed by Christ Jesus. ¹³ Brethren, I do not reason to have grabbed it, but one thing I indeed do, forgetting the things which are behind me and stretching forth to the things which are before me. ¹⁴ I am pursuing according to the goal line toward the prize of the upward calling of God in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Therefore, as many as are mature, we should be mindful of this, and if you are mindful of anyone differently, God will also be revealing this to you;

⁵ incessant wranglings of men who have been corrupted in the mind and who have been deprived of the truth, supposing that godliness is a method to earnings. Withdraw yourself from such.

² For we all trip in many things. If anyone does not trip in speech, this one is a mature man, is also able to bridle the whole body.

¹⁵ so that my soul chooses strangling and death rather than these my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe my life. I would not live everlasting. Let me alone, for my days are vanity.

²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For now I will lie down in the dust and you will seek me diligently, but I will not be.

²³ Search me, O God and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts, ²⁴ and see if there is any wicked way in me. And lead me in the way everlasting.

²⁶ He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely, he will be delivered.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it?
¹⁰ I, Jehovah, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his practices.

⁸ Your hands have made me and fashioned me together all around, yet you destroy me.

¹ This I laid to my heart for all, even to explore all this, that the righteous and the wise and their works, are in the hand of God. No man understands, either love or hatred. All is before them.
² All things come alike to all. There is one event to the righteous man and to the wicked man, to the good man and to the clean man and to the unclean man, to him who sacrifices and to him who does not sacrifice, as is the good man, so is the sinner and he who swears, as he who fears an oath. ³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all.
Yes also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil and madness is in their heart while they live and after that they go to the dead.

³ And say to the land of Israel, Jehovah says thus: Behold, I am against you. And will draw forth my sword out of its sheath and will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked.
⁴ Seeing then that I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked, therefore my sword will go forth out of its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north.

² And Jesus answered and said to them, Do you think that these Galileans became sinners more than all the other Galileans, because they have suffered such things? ³ I am saying to you, No, but, if you do not repent, you will all likewise perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed, do you think that those became debtors more than all other men who are dwelling in Jerusalem?

¹⁵ Now therefore seeing that I have come to speak this word to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid. And your handmaid said, I will now speak to the king. It may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.

¹⁷ Then your handmaid said, I beseech you, let the word of my lord the king be gracious, for as a messenger of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. And Jehovah your God be with you.

¹³ And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

⁷ I beseech you, remember those who perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?

²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, nor will he uphold the evildoers.

¹² From out of the populous city men groan and the soul of the wounded cries out. Yet God does not regard the foolishness.

²² We are killed all the day long because of belief upon you. We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

¹⁹ Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my wrath upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast, ²⁰ though Noah, Daniel and Job, were in it, as I live, says the lord Jehovah, they would deliver neither son nor daughter, they would but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
²¹ For thus says the lord Jehovah: How much more when I send my four severe judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword and the famine and the evil beasts and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!

¹³ For there is a trial and what if even the rod that scorns will be no more? says the lord Jehovah.

³⁶ and others received a trial from mocking and scourges, but still more, from bonds and prison: ³⁷ they were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were tempted; they died in murder from the sword; they went around in sheepskins, and in hides; they were lacking, being afflicted, and being mistreated,

³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of the Mount of Olives and wept as he went up and he had his head covered and went barefoot. And all the people who were with him covered every man his head and they went up, weeping as they went up.

⁴ And the king covered his face and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

¹² And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hastened to his house, mourning and having his head covered.

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine and Haman was fallen upon the couch on which Esther was. Then the king said, Will he even force the queen before me in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper and those who provoke God are secure. Into whose hand God brings abundantly.
⁷ But ask now the beasts and they will teach you and the birds of the heavens and they will tell you. ⁸ Or speak to the earth and it will teach you and the fishes of the sea will declare to you. ⁹ Who does not know in all these, that the hand of Jehovah has worked this, ¹⁰ in whose hand is the soul of every living thing and the breath of all mankind?

¹⁷ He leads counselors away stripped and he makes judges fools.

¹¹ God delivers me to the perverse and casts me into the hands of the wicked.

⁷ Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, grow mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established with them in their sight and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, nor is the rod of God upon them. ¹⁰ Their bull breeds and does not fail. Their cow brings forth safely and does not miscarry. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock and their children dance. ¹² They sing to the timbrel and harp and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.
¹³ They spend their days in prosperity and in a moment they go down to Sheol.
¹⁴ And they say to God, Depart from us, for we do not desire the knowledge of your ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray to him?

²⁵ And if it is not so now, who will prove me a liar and make my speech worth nothing?

¹⁴ from men by your hand, O Jehovah, from men of the world whose portion is in this life and whose belly you fill with your treasure. They are satisfied with sons and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

³ Because I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ Because there are no pains in their death, but their strength is firm.
⁵ They are not in trouble as other men, nor are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain around their neck. Violence covers them as a garment.
⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness. They have more than heart could wish.

¹ You are righteous, O Jehovah, when I contend with you. Yet I would reason the case with you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are all those at ease who deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them. Yes, they have taken root, they grow. Yes, they bring forth fruit. You are near in their mouth and far from their heart. But you, O Jehovah, know me. You see me and try my heart toward you.

⁴ because of the ground which is cracked. Because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are put to shame; they cover their heads.

¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones, to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomever he will and sets up over it the lowest of men.

¹⁸ O you king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom and greatness and glory and majesty. ¹⁹ And because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations and languages trembled and feared before him. Whom he wanted, he killed and whom he wanted, he kept alive and whom he wanted, he raised up and whom he wanted, he put down.
²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne. And they took his glory from him, ²¹ and he was driven from the sons of men. And his heart was made like the beasts and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed with grass like oxen and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men and that he sets up over it whomever he will.

⁷ After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, fearful and powerful and exceedingly strong. And it had great iron teeth. It devoured and broke in pieces and stamped the residue with its feet. And it was different from all the beasts that were before it and it had ten horns. ⁸ I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth speaking great things.
⁹ I beheld till thrones were placed and one who was ancient of days sat. His garments was white as snow and the hair of his head like pure wool. His throne was fiery flames and the wheels of it burning fire. ¹⁰ A fiery stream was streaming and came out from before him. Thousands of thousands ministered to him and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The judgment was set and the books were opened.
¹¹ I beheld at that time because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke. I beheld even till the beast was slain and its body destroyed and it was given to be burned with fire. ¹² And as for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away. Yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
¹³ I saw in the night visions, and behold, there came with the clouds of heaven someone like a son of man. And he came even to the ancient of days and they brought him near before him.
¹⁴ And there was given him dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which will not pass away and his kingdom is one that will not be destroyed.
¹⁵ As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved in the midst of my body and the visions of my head troubled me. ¹⁶ I came near to one of those who stood by and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made me know the interpretation of the things.
¹⁷ These great beasts, which are four, are four kings who will arise out of the earth. ¹⁸ But the holy ones of the Most High will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and forever.
¹⁹ Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was different from all of them, exceedingly fearful, whose teeth were of iron and its nails of brass, which devoured, broke in pieces and stamped the residue with its feet, ²⁰ and concerning the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came up and before which three fell, even that horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, whose look was greater than its fellows.
²¹ I beheld and the same horn made war with the holy ones and prevailed against them ²² until the ancient of days came. And judgment was given to the holy ones of the Most High and the time came that the holy ones possessed the kingdom.
²³ Thus he said, The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom upon earth, which will be different from all the kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and will tread it down and break it in pieces.
²⁴ And as for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise. And another will arise after them and he will be different from the former. And he will put down three kings. ²⁵ And he will speak words against the Most High and will wear out the holy ones of the Most High. And he will think to change the times and the law and they will be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time.
²⁶ But the judgment will be set and they will take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it to the end. ²⁷ And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, will be given to the people of the holy ones of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and all dominions will serve and obey him.
²⁸ Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me much and my countenance was changed in me, but I kept the matter in my heart.

¹⁴ and makes men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them?
¹⁵ He takes all of them up with the hook. He catches them in his net and gathers them in his drag. Therefore he rejoices and is glad. ¹⁶ Therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to his drag, because by them his portion is fat and his food plentiful. ¹⁷ Shall he therefore empty his net and not spare to kill the nations continually?

¹⁴ So the posts that rode upon swift steeds that were used in the king's service went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment and the decree was given out in Shushan the palace.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle and are spent without hope. ⁷ O remember that my life is a breath. My eye will no more see good.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days as the width of hands and my life-time is as nothing before you. Surely every man at his best condition is altogether vanity. Selah.

¹¹ When you have disciplined a man with rebukes for iniquity, you make his desires to disintegrate like a moth. Surely every man is vanity. Selah.

⁴⁷ O remember how short my time is, for what vanity you have created all the sons of men!

⁹ Because all our days are passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.
¹⁰ The days of our years are threescore years and ten, or even by reason of strength eighty years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, because it is soon gone and we fly away.

¹⁴ You do not know what the next-day will bring, for what is your life? For it will be a vapor, which appears for a few but thereafter also disappears.

²³ Saul and Jonathan, men who were loved and pleasant, undivided; handsome in their lives and undivided in their death; swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

²⁷ Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up and makes her nest on high? ²⁸ She dwells on the cliff and makes her home upon the point of the cliff and the stronghold. ²⁹ From there she spies out the prey. Her eyes behold it afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood. And where the slain are, there is she.

⁵ Will you set your eyes upon what is not? Because it certainly makes itself wings, like an eagle that flies toward heaven.

² that sends ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus upon the waters, saying, You* go swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people fearful from their beginning onward, a nation mighty and trampled down, whose land the rivers divide!

¹³ Behold, he will come up as clouds and his chariots as the whirlwind. His horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are ruined.

¹⁹ Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens. They chased us upon the mountains. They laid wait for us in the wilderness.

⁸ Their horses also are swifter than leopards and are more fierce than the evening wolves. And their horsemen press proudly on. Yes, their horsemen come from far. They fly as an eagle that hastens to devour.

¹¹ Therefore I will not refrain my mouth. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹³ When I say, My bed will comfort me. My couch will ease my complaint.

² I sought the Lord in the day of my trouble. My hand was stretched out in the night and did not slack. My soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remember God and I am in an uproar. I complain and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah.

¹⁸ Oh that I could comfort myself against sorrow! My heart is faint within me.

⁷ You will not take the name of Jehovah your God in vain, because Jehovah will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes upon me and what I am afraid of comes to me.

²⁰ Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am perfect, it will prove me perverse. ²¹ Though I were perfect, I do not regard myself. I despise my life.

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me. And you will not acquit me from my iniquity.

¹⁶ But now you number my steps. Do you not watch over my sin?14:17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag and you fasten up my iniquity.

⁶ Even when I remember, I am troubled and horror takes hold on my flesh.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors I am confounded. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath has gone over me. Your terrors have cut me off.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of you and I am afraid of your judgments.

²² It is all one thing. Therefore I say, He destroys the perfect and the wicked.

⁷ although you know that I am not wicked. And there is none that can deliver out of your hand?

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me. And you will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. And if I am righteous, yet I will not lift up my head, being filled with shame and looking upon my affliction.
¹⁶ And if my head exalts itself, you hunt me as a lion. And again you show yourself marvelous upon me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me and increase your indignation upon me. Changes and warfare are with me.

¹⁶ Behold, is their prosperity not in their hand. (The counsel of the wicked is far from me.) ¹⁷ How often is it that the lamp of the profane is put out, that their calamity comes upon them, that God distributes sorrows in his anger,

²⁷ Behold, I know your* thoughts and the devices with which you* would wrong me.

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities. ⁶ For you have taken pledges from your brother for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ You have not given water to the weary to drink and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the land. And the honorable man, he dwelt in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are all around you and sudden fear troubles you, ¹¹ or darkness, so that you cannot see and abundance of waters cover you.
¹² Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are! ¹³ And you say, What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he does not see and he walks on the vault of heaven.
¹⁵ Will you keep the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream, ¹⁷ who said to God, Depart from us, and What can the Almighty do for us? ¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous see it and are glad. And the innocent laugh them to scorn, ²⁰ saying, Surely those who rose up against us are cut off and the remnant of them, the fire has consumed.
²¹ Acquaint now yourself with him and be at peace. By this good will come to you. ²² I beseech you, receive the law from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up, you put away unrighteousness far from your tents. ²⁴ Then you will lay up gold as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Yes, the Almighty will be your treasure and precious silver to you. ²⁶ For then will you delight yourself in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God.
²⁷ You will make your prayer to him and he will hear you and you will pay your vows. ²⁸ You will also decree a thing and it will be established to you. And light will shine upon your ways.
²⁹ When they cast you down, you will say, There is lifting up and he will save the humble man. ³⁰ He will deliver even him who is not innocent. Yes, he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.

³³ Jehovah will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

¹³ Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart and washed my hands in innocence,

³⁵ Yet you said, I am innocent. Surely his anger is turned away from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with you because you say, I have not sinned.

⁷ if my step has turned out of the way and my heart walked after my eyes and if any spot has clung to my hands,

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence, so I will encompass your altar, O Jehovah,

¹³ He who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

¹⁶ Wash you*, make you* clean, put away the evil of your* practices from before my eyes. Cease to do evil. ¹⁷ Learn to do good. Seek justice, make the oppressed fortunate, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
¹⁸ Come now and let us reason together, says Jehovah, though your* sins be as scarlet, they will be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they will be as wool.

²² For though you wash with lye and take much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me, says the lord Jehovah.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long will your evil thoughts lodge within you?

³ For being ignorant of God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

⁶ Your own mouth condemns you and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.

⁶ Their webs will not become garments, nor will they cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of wickedness and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁶ For we have all become as unclean and all our righteous acts are as a menstruation cloth. And we all fade as a leaf. And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

⁸ But therefore, I am also deeming all things indeed to be a forfeiture because of the superiority of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, because of whom, I forfeited all things, and am deeming them to be but trash, in order that I may gain Christ, ⁹ and may be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, which is from the law, but which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is from God on the faith,

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie, neither the son of man, that he should repent. Has he said and will he not do it? Or has he spoken and will he not make it good?

⁷ But Jehovah said to Samuel, Do not look on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For Jehovah sees not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looks on the heart.

¹⁸ Behold now, I have set my case in order. I know that I am righteous. ¹⁹ Who is he who will contend with me? For then I would keep silent and give up the spirit.
²⁰ Only do not do two things to me, then I will not hide myself from your face: ²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me and do not let your dread make me afraid. ²² Then call you and I will answer, or let me speak and answer you me.
²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin.

¹² Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just, for God is greater than man.

⁵ Look to the heavens and see. And behold the skies, which are higher than you. ⁶ If you have sinned, what do you effect against him? And if your transgressions be multiplied, what do you to him? ⁷ If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive of your hand?

¹⁰ Whatever has been, the name of it was given long ago and it is known that he is man. Neither can he contend with him who is mightier than he.

¹⁹ Behold, he will come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation. For I will suddenly make them run away from it. And he who is chosen, him I will appoint over it. For who is like me and who will appoint a time for me and who is the shepherd who will stand before me?

²⁵ If one man sins against another, God will judge him, but if a man sins against Jehovah, who will entreat for him? Notwithstanding, they did not listen to the voice of their father, because Jehovah intended to kill them.

¹⁶ Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. ¹⁷ And the one woman said, Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house. And I was delivered of a child with her in the house. ¹⁸ And it happened the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also. And we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, except we two in the house.
¹⁹ And this woman's child died in the night, because she lay upon it. ²⁰ And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while your handmaid slept and laid it in her bosom and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead. But when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son whom I bore.
²² And the other woman said, No, but the living is my son and the dead is your son. And the other woman said, No, but the dead is your son and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king.
²³ Then the king said, The one says, This is my son that lives and your son is the dead. And the other says, No, but your son is the dead and my son is the living. ²⁴ And the king said, Fetch me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two and give half to the one and half to the other.
²⁶ Then the woman whose the living child was spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son and she said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child and by no means kill it. But the other said, It will be neither mine nor your. Divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child and by no means kill it; she is the mother of it.
²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged. And they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy.

¹ My little-children, these things I am writing to you in order that you may not sin. And if anyone should sin, we have a Helper with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. ² And he is the atonement concerning our sins, but not concerning ours only, but also concerning the whole world.

¹¹ Shall not his majesty make you* afraid and his dread fall upon you*?

²⁰ Only do not do two things to me, then I will not hide myself from your face: ²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me and do not let your dread make me afraid. ²² Then call you and I will answer, or let me speak and answer you me.

¹⁵ Therefore I am terrified at his presence. When I consider, I am afraid of him.

² O that I were as in the months of long-ago, as in the days when God watched over me, ³ when his lamp shone upon my head and by his light I walked through darkness, ⁴ as I was in the ripeness of my days, when the friendship of God was upon my tent, ⁵ when the Almighty was yet with me and my sons were about me, ⁶ when my steps were washed with butter and the rock poured out streams of oil to me, ⁷ when I went forth to the gate to the city, when I prepared my seat in the street.
⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves and the aged rose up and stood. ⁹ The rulers refrained from talking and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The voice of the ranking men was hushed and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me.
¹² Because I delivered the poor who cried, also the fatherless who had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him who was ready to perish came upon me and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
¹⁴ I put on righteousness and it clothed me. My justice was as a robe and a diadem.
¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind and I was feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy and I searched out the case of he whom I did not know. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous and plucked the prey out of his teeth.
¹⁸ Then I said, I will die in my nest and I will multiply my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root is spread out to the waters and the dew lays all night upon my limb s. ²⁰ My glory is fresh in me and my bow is renewed in my hand.
²¹ To me men gave ear and waited and kept silence for my counsel. ²² After my words they spoke not again and my speech distilled upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain. And they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
²⁴ I smiled on them when they had no confidence and they did not cast down the light of my countenance. ²⁵ I chose out their way and sat as chief and dwelt as a king in the army, as a man who comforts the mourners.

²³ For calamity from God is a terror to me and I can do nothing because of his majesty.

⁷ Behold, my terror will not make you afraid, nor will my pressure be heavy upon you.

¹ Yes, at this my heart trembles and is moved out of its place.

¹⁰ Remove your stroke away from me. I am consumed by the blow of your hand.

¹¹ Who knows the power of your anger and your wrath according to the fear that is due to you?
