⁸ Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

¹⁷ who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God

¹² And in that day the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, called for weeping and for mourning and for baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

⁷ The new wine mourns. The vine languishes. All the merry-hearted do sigh. ⁸ The joy of tambourine ceases. The noise of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it. ¹⁰ The waste city is broken down. Every house is shut up, that no man may come in. ¹¹ There is a crying in the streets because of the wine. All joy is darkened. The gladness of the land has gone. ¹² Desolation is left in the city and the gate is struck with destruction.

¹¹ Tremble, women who are at ease. Be troubled, you* careless ones. Strip you* and make you* bare and gird sackcloth upon your* loins.

⁴ Will you not from this time cry to me, My Father, you are the guide of my youth?

¹⁷ Jehovah of hosts says thus, Consider and call for the mourning women, that they may come and send for the skillful women, that they may come. ¹⁸ And let them make haste and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears and our eyelids gush out with waters. ¹⁹ For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How we are ruined! We are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.

¹³ Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament, you* priests. Wail, you* ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you* ministers of my God. For the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from the house of your* God. ¹⁴ Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the old men and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of Jehovah your* God and cry to Jehovah.
¹⁵ Alas for the day! For the day of Jehovah is at hand and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

¹² Yet even now, says Jehovah, turn to me with all your* heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning. ¹³ And tear your* heart and not your* garments and turn to Jehovah your* God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and relents of the evil. ¹⁴ Who knows whether he will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him, even a meal offering and a drink offering to Jehovah your* God?

¹⁰ And I will turn your* feasts into mourning and all your* songs into lamentation. And I will bring sackcloth upon all loins and baldness upon every head and I will make it as the mourning for an only son and the end of it as a bitter day.

¹⁵ And did he not make one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? And why one? He sought a godly seed.
Therefore take heed to your* spirit and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

⁸ Draw near to God and he will be drawing near to you. Cleanse your hands sinners and purify your hearts you indecisive! ⁹ Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy be turned to gloom.

¹ Come now you rich, weep, howling in your miseries, in those which are coming upon you.
