¹ The word of Jehovah that came to Micah the Morashtite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
² Hear, you* peoples, all of you*. Listen, O earth and all who are in it and let the Lord Jehovah be witness against you*, the Lord from his holy temple. ³ For, behold, Jehovah comes forth out of his place and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth. ⁴ And the mountains will be melted under him and the valleys will be split, as wax before the fire, as waters that are poured down a steep place.
⁵ All this is for the transgression of Jacob and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what are the high places of Judah? Are they not Jerusalem?
⁶ Therefore I will make Samaria as a heap of the field and as places for planting vineyards. And I will pour down the stones of it into the valley and I will uncover the foundations of it. ⁷ And all her graven images will be beaten to pieces. And all her wages will be burned with fire and I will lay desolate all her idols. For she has gathered them from the wages of a prostitute and to the wage of a prostitute they will return.
⁸ For this I will lament and wail. I will go stripped and naked. I will make a wailing like the jackals and a lamentation like the ostriches. ⁹ For her wounds are incurable. For it has come even to Judah. it reaches to the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.
¹⁰ Do not tell it in Gath. Weep not at all. I have rolled myself in the dust at Beth-le-aphrah. ¹¹ Pass away, O inhabitant of Shaphir, in nakedness and shame. The inhabitant of Zaanan has not come forth. The wailing of Beth-ezel will take from you* the stay of it. ¹² For the inhabitant of Maroth waits anxiously for good, because evil has come down from Jehovah to the gate of Jerusalem.
¹³ Bind the chariot to the swift steed, O inhabitant of Lachish. She was the beginning of sin to the daughter of Zion, for the transgressions of Israel were found in you. ¹⁴ Therefore you will give a parting gift to Moresheth-gath. The houses of Achzib will be a deceitful thing to the kings of Israel.
¹⁵ I will yet bring to you, O inhabitant of Mareshah, he who will possess you. The glory of Israel will come even to Adullam. ¹⁶ You make yourself bald and cut off your hair for the sons of your delight. Enlarge your baldness as the vulture, for they have gone into captivity from you.

¹ Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began to reign and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok.
² And he did what was right in the eyes of Jehovah, according to all that his father Uzziah had done. However he did not enter into the temple of Jehovah. And the people still did corruptly. ³ He built the upper gate of the house of Jehovah and on the wall of Ophel he built much. ⁴ Moreover he built cities in the hill-country of Judah and in the forests he built castles and towers.
⁵ Also he fought with the king of the sons of Ammon and prevailed against them. And the sons of Ammon gave him the same year a hundred talants of silver and ten thousand measures of wheat and ten thousand of barley. So much did the sons of Ammon render to him, in the second year also and in the third. ⁶ So Jotham became mighty, because he ordered his ways before Jehovah his God.
⁷ Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all his wars and his ways, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. ⁸ He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. ⁹ And Jotham slept with his fathers and they buried him in the city of David. And Ahaz his son reigned instead of him.

¹ The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

⁹ And the head of Ephraim is Samaria and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If you* will not believe, surely you* will not be established.

¹⁸ Micah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Jehovah of hosts says thus: Zion will be plowed as a field and Jerusalem will become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

¹ The word of Jehovah that came to Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, King of Israel.

¹⁵ Though you, Israel, play the prostitute, yet do not let Judah offend and do not come to Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-aven, nor swear, As Jehovah lives.

⁵ And the pride of Israel testifies to his face.
Therefore Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their iniquity. Judah also will stumble with them. ⁶ They will go with their flocks and with their herds to seek Jehovah, but they will not find him. He has withdrawn himself from them. ⁷ They have dealt treacherously against Jehovah, for they have borne strange sons. Now the new moon will devour them with their fields.
⁸ Blow you* the cornet in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah. Shout an alarm at Beth-aven, behind you, O Benjamin. ⁹ Ephraim will become a desolation in the day of rebuke. I have made known what will surely be among the tribes of Israel.
¹⁰ The rulers of Judah are like those who remove the landmark. I will pour out my wrath upon them like water. ¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed. He is crushed in judgment, because he was content to walk after man's command.
¹² Therefore I am to Ephraim as a moth and to the house of Judah as rottenness. ¹³ When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah saw his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to King Jareb. But he is not able to heal you*, nor will he cure you* of your* wound.
¹⁴ For I will be to Ephraim as a lion and as a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear and go away, I will carry off and there will be none to deliver.

¹⁰ I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel. Prostitution is there in Ephraim; Israel is defiled. ¹¹ Also, O Judah, there is a harvest appointed for you when I bring back the captivity of my people.

¹⁴ For Israel has forgotten his maker and built palaces. And Judah has multiplied fortified cities. But I will send a fire upon his cities and it will devour the castles of it.

¹ Ephraim feeds on wind and follows after the east wind. He continually multiplies lies and desolation. And they make a covenant with Assyria and oil is carried into Egypt.
² Jehovah has also a controversy with Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways. He will recompense him according to his practices.

¹ The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash King of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

⁴ Jehovah says thus: For three transgressions of Judah, yes, for four, I will not turn away the punishment of it, because they have rejected the law of Jehovah and have not kept his statutes and their lies have made them go-astray, according to which their fathers walked. ⁵ But I will send a fire upon Judah and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
⁶ Jehovah says thus: For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not turn away the punishment of it, because they have sold a righteous man for silver and a needy man for a pair of shoes– ⁷ those who pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor and turn aside the way of the meek. And a man and his father go to the same maiden, to profane my holy name. ⁸ And they lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes taken in pledge. And in the house of their God they drink the wine of such as have been fined.

¹ Hear this word that Jehovah has spoken against you*, O sons of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying, ² You* only I have known of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will visit upon you* all your* iniquities.

¹ Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come!

⁵ All this is for the transgression of Jacob and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what are the high places of Judah? Are they not Jerusalem?

¹⁴ Therefore you will give a parting gift to Moresheth-gath. The houses of Achzib will be a deceitful thing to the kings of Israel.
¹⁵ I will yet bring to you, O inhabitant of Mareshah, he who will possess you. The glory of Israel will come even to Adullam.

¹ The burden which Habakkuk the prophet saw.

¹ Listen, you* heavens and I will speak and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

⁴ Jehovah is in his holy temple. Jehovah's throne is in heaven. His eyes, behold, his eyelids try, the sons of men.

¹ The earth is Jehovah's and the fullness of it, the world and those who dwell in it.

² Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to you, when I lift up my hands toward your holy oracle.

¹ Hear this, all you* peoples. Listen, all you* inhabitants of the world, ² both low and high, rich and poor together.

¹ The Mighty One, God, Jehovah, has spoken and called the earth from the rising of the sun to the going down of it.

⁷ Hear, O my people and I will speak, O Israel and I will testify to you, I am God, even your God.

¹² If I were hungry, I would not tell you, because the world is mine and the fullness of it.

² Hear, O heavens and listen, O earth, for Jehovah has spoken. I have nourished and brought up sons and they have rebelled against me.

¹⁹ Hear, O earth: Behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to my words. And as for my law, they have rejected it.

²⁹ O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of Jehovah.

²³ because they have done senselessness in Israel and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I did not command them. And I am he who knows and am witness, says Jehovah.

⁷ When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah. And my prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.

¹ Hear now what Jehovah says: Arise, contend before the mountains and let the hills hear your voice. ² Hear, O you* mountains, Jehovah's controversy and you* enduring foundations of the earth, for Jehovah has a controversy with his people and he will contend with Israel.

²⁰ But Jehovah is in his holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before him.

¹⁴ Yet you* say, Why?
Because Jehovah has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt with treacherously, though she is your companion and the wife of your covenant.

⁵ And I will come near to you* to judgment and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against the false swearers and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow and the fatherless and who turn aside the traveler and do not fear me, says Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁴ And having called to him all the crowd again, he said to them, All, hear me and understand. ¹⁵ There is nothing outside the man, that traveling into him is able to desecrate him, but the things which travel out from him, those are the things which defile the man.

⁷ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the congregations. To the one who overcomes, I will be giving to him to eat from the Tree of Life, which is in the Paradise of God.

¹¹ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the congregations. He who overcomes may never be hurt from the second death.

¹⁷ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the congregations. To the one who overcomes, I will be giving to him to eat from the manna which has been hidden and I will be giving him a white voting-pebble and a new name that has been written upon the voting-pebble, which no one knows except he who receives it.

²⁹ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the congregations.

¹³ He made him ride on the high places of the earth and he ate the increase of the field and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the flinty rock,

²⁹ You are fortunate, O Israel. Who is like you, a people saved by Jehovah, the shield of your help and the sword of your excellency! And your enemies will submit themselves to you and you will tread upon their high places.

¹² Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand.

³ But our God is in the heavens. He has done whatever he pleased.

¹⁰ Enter into the rock and hide you in the dust, from before the terror of Jehovah and from the glory of his majesty. ¹¹ The lofty looks of man will be brought low and the haughtiness of men will be bowed down and Jehovah alone will be exalted in that day.
¹² For there will be a day of Jehovah of hosts upon all that is proud and haughty and upon all that is lifted up and it will be brought low, ¹³ and upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up and upon all the oaks of Bashan, ¹⁴ and upon all the high mountains and upon all the hills that are lifted up, ¹⁵ and upon every lofty tower and upon every fortified wall, ¹⁶ and upon all the ships of Tarshish and upon all desirable imagery.
¹⁷ And the loftiness of man will be bowed down and the haughtiness of men will be brought low and Jehovah alone will be exalted in that day. ¹⁸ And the idols will utterly pass away. ¹⁹ And men will go into the caves of the rocks and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

¹⁰ For the hand of Jehovah will rest on this mountain.
And Moab will be trodden down in his place, even as straw is trodden down in the water of the dunghill.

²¹ For, behold, Jehovah comes forth out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth also will disclose her blood and will no more cover her slain.

³ I have trodden the winepress alone and of the peoples there was no man with me. Yes, I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath and their lifeblood is sprinkled upon my garments and I have stained all my garments. ⁴ For the day of vengeance was in my heart and the year of my redeemed has come.

¹ Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence, ² as when fire kindles the brushwood, and the fire causes the waters to boil, to make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your presence!

¹² Then the Spirit lifted me up and I heard behind me the voice of a great rushing, saying, The glory of Jehovah from his place is blessed.

¹⁴ For I will be to Ephraim as a lion and as a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear and go away, I will carry off and there will be none to deliver. ¹⁵ I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offense and seek my face. In their affliction they will seek me earnestly.

¹³ For behold, he who forms the mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what is his thought, who makes the morning darkness and treads upon the high places of the earth–Jehovah, the God of hosts, is his name.

¹⁹ Jehovah, the Lord, is my strength. And he makes my feet like female-deers' feet and will make me to walk upon my high places

⁴ Jehovah, when you went forth out of Seir,
when you marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped,
yes, the clouds dropped water.

² As smoke is driven away, so drive them away. As wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

⁵ The mountains melted like wax at the presence of Jehovah, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

¹ Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence, ² as when fire kindles the brushwood, and the fire causes the waters to boil, to make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your presence! ³ When you did fearful things which we did not look for, you came down; the mountains quaked at your presence.

⁵ For the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, is he who touches the land and it melts and all who dwell in it will mourn. And it will rise up all of it like the River and will sink again like the River of Egypt.

⁵ The mountains quake at him and the hills melt and the earth is upheaved at his presence. Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.

⁶ He stood and measured the earth. He beheld and drove apart the nations. And the eternal mountains were scattered. The everlasting hills bowed. His traveling are everlasting.

¹⁰ The mountains saw you and were afraid. The tempest of waters passed by. The deep uttered its voice and lifted up its hands on high.

⁴ And his feet will stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives will be split in the midst of it toward the east and toward the west, a very great valley. And half of the mountain will remove toward the north and half of it toward the south.

¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will be coming like a thief in the night; in which the heavens will be passing away with a crashing-sound, and the elements will be dissolved, being burnt with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it will be burned up. ¹¹ Therefore, with all these things being dissolved, see what sort of things you ought to possess in all holy conduct and godliness, ¹² expecting, and diligently wanting the presence of the day of God, through which, the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt, being burnt with heat.

¹¹ And I saw a great white throne and the one who sits upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.

³² For the saying which he cried by the word of Jehovah against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, will surely happen.

³ But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel. Yes and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom Jehovah cast out from before the sons of Israel. ⁴ And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.

¹⁰ And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria and saw the altar that was at Damascus. And king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the form of the altar and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship of it. ¹¹ And Urijah the priest built an altar. According to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so Urijah the priest made it until the coming of king Ahaz from Damascus.
¹² And when the king came from Damascus, the king saw the altar. And the king drew near to the altar and offered on it.

⁷ And it was so, because the sons of Israel had sinned against Jehovah their God who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh King of Egypt and had feared other gods, ⁸ and walked in the statutes of the nations, whom Jehovah cast out from before the sons of Israel and of the kings of Israel, which they made.
⁹ And the sons of Israel did things secretly that were not right against Jehovah their God. And they built for them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city. ¹⁰ And they set up for them pillars and Asherim upon every high hill and under every green tree, ¹¹ and there they burnt incense in all the high places, as the nations did whom Jehovah carried away before them. And they worked wicked things to provoke Jehovah to anger. ¹² And they served idols, of which Jehovah had said to them, You* will not do this thing.
¹³ Yet Jehovah testified to Israel and to Judah, by every prophet and every seer, saying, Turn from your* evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your* fathers and which I sent to you* by my servants the prophets. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding, they would not hear, but stiffened their neck, like the neck of their fathers who did not believe in Jehovah their God.
¹⁵ And they rejected his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and his testimonies which he testified to them. And they followed vanity and became vain and went after the nations that were all around them, concerning whom Jehovah had charged them that they should not do like them.
¹⁶ And they forsook all the commandments of Jehovah their God and made for them molten images, even two calves and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.
¹⁷ And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire and used divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do what was evil in the sight of Jehovah to provoke him to anger.
¹⁸ Therefore Jehovah was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. There was none left but only the tribe of Judah.
¹⁹ Also Judah did not keep the commandments of Jehovah their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. ²⁰ And Jehovah rejected all the seed of Israel and afflicted them and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight. ²¹ For he tore Israel from the house of David. And they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king.
And Jeroboam drove Israel from following Jehovah and made them sin a great sin.
²² And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did. They did not depart from them ²³ until Jehovah removed Israel out of his sight, as he spoke by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria to this day.

² but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and also made molten images for the Baals.
³ Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom and burnt his sons in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom Jehovah cast out before the sons of Israel. ⁴ And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.

²³ For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus, which killed* him. And he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, therefore I will sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel.
²⁴ And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God and shut up the doors of the house of Jehovah. And he made altars for him in every corner of Jerusalem. ²⁵ And in every city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to other gods and provoked to anger Jehovah, the God of his fathers.

¹⁴ Moreover all the chiefs of the priests and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations. And they polluted the house of Jehovah which he had made holy in Jerusalem.
¹⁵ And Jehovah, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling-place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

¹ Jehovah says thus, Where is the document of your* mother's divorcement, with which I have put her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you*? Behold, for your* iniquities you* were sold and for your* transgressions your* mother was put away.
² Why, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea. I make the rivers a wilderness. Their fish stink because there is no water and die for thirst.

¹ Behold, Jehovah's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, nor his ear heavy, that it cannot hear. ² But your* iniquities have separated between you* and your* God and your* sins have hid his face from you* so that he will not hear.
³ For your* hands are defiled with blood and your* fingers with iniquity. Your* lips have spoken lies. Your* tongue mutters wickedness. ⁴ No man sues in righteousness and no man pleads in truth. They trust in vanity and speak lies. They conceive mischief and bring forth wickedness. ⁵ They hatch adders' eggs and weave the spider's web. He who eats of their eggs dies and what is crushed breaks out into a viper. ⁶ Their webs will not become garments, nor will they cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of wickedness and the act of violence is in their hands.
⁷ Their feet run to evil and they make haste to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of wickedness. Desolation and destruction are in their paths. ⁸ They do not know the way of peace and there is no justice in their goings. They have made them crooked paths. Whoever goes in it does not know peace.
⁹ Therefore justice is far from us, nor does righteousness overtake us. We look for light, but, behold, darkness, for brightness, but we walk in obscurity. ¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind. Yes, we grope as those who have no eyes. We stumble at noonday as in the twilight. We are as dead men in desolate places. ¹¹ We all roar like bears and moan greatly like doves. We look for justice, but there is none, for salvation, but it is far off from us.
¹² For our transgressions are multiplied before you and our sins testify against us. For our transgressions are with us and as for our iniquities, we know them: ¹³ transgressing and denying Jehovah and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
¹⁴ And justice is turned away backward and righteousness stands afar off. For truth has fallen in the street and uprightness cannot enter. ¹⁵ Yes, truth is lacking and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.
And Jehovah saw it and it displeased him that there was no justice.

¹⁷ Have you not procured this to yourself, in that you have forsaken Jehovah your God when he led you by the way?

¹⁹ Your own wickedness will discipline you and your backslidings will reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that you have forsaken Jehovah your God and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁸ Your way and your practices have procured these things to you. This is your wickedness, for it is bitter, for it reaches to your heart.

²⁵ Your* iniquities have turned away these things and your* sins have withheld good from you*.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us! For we have sinned.

¹ When I would heal Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered and the wickedness of Samaria. For they commit falsehood and the thief enters in and the troop of robbers ravages outside.

⁵ He has cast off your calf, O Samaria. My anger is kindled against them. How long will it be ere they attain to innocence? ⁶ For even this is from Israel: the workman made it and it is no God. Yes, the calf of Samaria will be broken in pieces.

¹⁴ Those who swear by the sin of Samaria and say, As your god, O Dan, lives, and, As the way of Beer-sheba lives, they will fall and never rise up again.

¹⁵ The Jews, who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and banished us, and were not pleasing to God, and are adverse to all men; ¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles in order that they might be saved; that they should always fill up their sins, but the wrath has arrived-unexpectedly upon them–to the end.

²⁵ Have you not heard how I have done it from afar and formed it of times long-ago? Now I have made it occur, that you should be to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

² For you have made of a city a heap, of a fortified city a ruin, a palace of strangers to be no city. It will not be built everlasting.

¹² And the high fortress of your walls he has brought down, laid low and brought to the ground, even to the dust.

¹¹ And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling-place of jackals. And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

²⁵ Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, says Jehovah, which destroys all the earth. And I will stretch out my hand upon you and roll you down from the rocks and will make you a burnt mountain.

³⁷ And Babylon will become heaps, a dwelling-place for jackals, an astonishment and a hissing, without inhabitant.

¹ How the gold has become dim, the most pure gold changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.

¹⁴ So I will break down the wall that you* have daubed with untempered mortar and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation of it will be uncovered. And it will fall and you* will be consumed in the midst of it.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah.

¹⁶ Samaria will bear her guilt, for she has rebelled against her God. They will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed in pieces and their women with child will be ripped up.

¹¹ Inasmuch therefore as you* trample upon the poor and take exactions of wheat from him. You* have built houses of hewn stone, but you* will not dwell in them. You* have planted pleasant vineyards, but you* will not drink the wine of it.

¹² Therefore for your* sake Zion will be plowed as a field and Jerusalem will become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

¹³ You went forth for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed.
You wound the head out of the house of the wicked man, laying bare the foundation even to the neck. Selah.

² But Jesus said to them, Do you not see all these things? Assuredly I am saying to you, One stone may not be left here upon another stone, which will not be torn-down.

³⁰ And I will destroy your* high places and cut down your* sun-images and cast your* dead bodies upon the bodies of your* idols and my soul will abhor you*.

²¹ And I took your* sin, the calf which you* had made and burnt it with fire and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. And I cast the dust of it into the brook that descended out of the mountain.

¹⁸ You will not bring the hire of a prostitute, or the wages of a dog, into the house of Jehovah your God for any vow, for even both these are an abomination to Jehovah your God.

¹⁴ And he broke in pieces the pillars and cut down the Asherim and filled their places with the bones of men.
¹⁵ Moreover the altar that was at Bethel and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, even that altar and the high place he broke down. And he burned the high place and beat it to dust and burned the Asherah.

¹ Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke in pieces the pillars and hewed down the Asherim and broke down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, also in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. Then all the sons of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.

⁶ And so also in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even to Naphtali, in their ruins all around. ⁷ And he broke down the altars and beat the Asherim and the graven images into powder and hewed down all the sun-images throughout all the land of Israel and returned to Jerusalem.

⁹ Therefore by this the iniquity of Jacob will be forgiven. And this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: that he makes all the stones of the altar like smashed chalk-stones, so that the Asherim and the sun-images will rise no more.

¹⁷ But we will certainly perform every word that has gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our rulers, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food and were well and saw no evil.
¹⁸ But since we left off burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked all things and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.

⁵ for their mother has played the prostitute. She who conceived them has done shamefully, for she said, I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.

¹² And I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she has said, These are my hire that my lovers have given me. And I will make them a forest and the beasts of the field will eat them.

⁶ For even this is from Israel: the workman made it and it is no God. Yes, the calf of Samaria will be broken in pieces.

⁵ The inhabitants of Samaria will be in terror for the calves of Beth-aven. For the people of it will mourn over it and the priests of it, who rejoiced over it for the glory of it, because it has departed from it. ⁶ It will also be carried to Assyria for a present to King Jareb. Ephraim will receive shame and Israel will be ashamed of his own counsel.

³ and have cast lots for my people and have given a boy for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.

³ Because out of the wine of the fury of her fornication all the nations have fallen, and the kings of the earth fornicated with her and the merchants of the earth were enriched from the power of her promiscuity.

⁹ And the kings of the earth, who fornicated and were promiscuous with her, will weep and will grieve over her, whenever they look upon the smoke of her fire,

¹² cargo of gold, silver, precious stone, pearl, fine-linen, purple, silk, scarlet, every citron wood thing, every vessel of ivory, every vessel made out of the most precious wood and from brass, iron and marble; ¹³ and cinnamon, spice, incenses, perfume, frankincense, wine, oil, fine-flour, grain, sheep, other animals, and of horses and of chariots and of bodies and souls of men.

²⁹ I am a brother to jackals and a companion to ostriches.

⁶ I am like a pelican of the wilderness. I have become as an owl of the waste places.

²¹ But wild beasts of the desert will lie there and their houses will be full of doleful creatures. And ostriches will dwell there and wild goats will dance there.

⁹ Therefore I will weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah. I will water you with my tears, O Heshbon and Elealeh. For upon your summer fruits and upon your harvest the battle shout has fallen.

² at that time Jehovah spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from your loins and put your shoe from your foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
³ And Jehovah said, Just as my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and a wonder concerning Egypt and concerning Ethiopia, ⁴ so will the king of Assyria lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot and with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

³ Therefore my loins are filled with anguish. Pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail. I am pained so that I cannot hear. I am dismayed so that I cannot see.

⁴ Therefore I said, Look away from me. I will weep bitterly. Labor not to comfort me for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

¹⁹ My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart. My heart is in an uproar in me. I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

¹ Oh that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

¹⁰ For the mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none passes through, nor can men hear the voice of the cattle. Both the birds of the heavens and the beasts have fled; they are gone.

¹⁹ For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How we are ruined! We are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.

³⁶ Therefore my heart roars for Moab like pipes and my heart roars like pipes for the men of Kir-heres. Therefore the abundance that he has gotten has perished. ³⁷ For every head is bald and every beard clipped. Upon all the hands are cuttings and upon the loins sackcloth. ³⁸ On all the housetops of Moab and in the streets of it, there is lamentation everywhere.
For I have broken Moab like a vessel of which none delights, says Jehovah. ³⁹ How it is broken down! How they do wail! How Moab has turned the back with shame! So Moab will become a laughing-stock and a horror to all who are all around him.

⁹ And it happened in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah King of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it. ¹⁰ And at the end of three years they took it. Samaria was taken in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea King of Israel. ¹¹ And the king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria and put them in Halak and on the Habor, the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes, ¹² because they did not obey the voice of Jehovah their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded and would not hear it, nor do it.
¹³ Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.

¹ After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered into Judah and encamped against the fortified cities and thought to win them for himself.
² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib came and that he intended to fight against Jerusalem, ³ he took counsel with his rulers and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were outside the city. And they helped him. ⁴ So there was gathered together many people. And they stopped all the fountains and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?
⁵ And he took courage and built up all the wall that was broken down and raised it up to the towers and the other wall outside and strengthened Millo in the city of David and made weapons and shields in abundance.
⁶ And he set captains of war over the people and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying, ⁷ Be strong and of good courage, do not be afraid nor dismayed of the king of Assyria, nor of all the multitude that is with him. For there is a greater with us than with him. ⁸ With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is Jehovah our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
⁹ After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem (now he was before Lachish and all his power with him) to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying, ¹⁰ Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, On what do you* trust that you* remain in the siege in Jerusalem? ¹¹ Does not Hezekiah persuade you*, to give you* over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
¹² Has not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, You* will worship before one altar and upon it you* will burn incense?
¹³ Do you* not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand? ¹⁴ Who was there among all the gods of those nations, which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand that your* God should be able to deliver you* out of my hand?
¹⁵ Now therefore do not let Hezekiah deceive you*, nor persuade you* after this manner, neither believe him. For no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand and out of the hand of my fathers. How much less will your* God deliver you* out of my hand?
¹⁶ And his servants spoke yet more against Jehovah God and against his servant Hezekiah. ¹⁷ He also wrote letters, to rail on Jehovah, the God of Israel and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so will the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.
¹⁸ And they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them and to trouble them, that they might take the city. ¹⁹ And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.
²⁰ And Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this and cried out to heaven. ²¹ And Jehovah sent a messenger who cut off all the mighty men of valor and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, those who came out from his own guts killed him there with the sword.
²² Thus Jehovah saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all others and guided them on every side. ²³ And many brought gifts to Jehovah to Jerusalem and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah. So that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thereafter.

⁵ Why will you* still be stricken, that you* revolt more and more? The whole head is sick and the whole heart faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it, but wounds and bruises and fresh stripes. They have not been closed nor bound up nor soothed with oil.

²⁶ And her gates will lament and mourn and she will be desolate and sit upon the ground.

⁷ now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up upon them the waters of the River, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it will come up over all its channels and go over all its banks, ⁸ and it will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through; it will reach even to the neck. And the stretching out of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.

²⁸ He has come to Aiah. He has passed through Migron. At Michmash he lays up his baggage. ²⁹ They have gone over the pass. They have taken up their lodging at Geba. Ramah trembles. Gibeah of Saul has fled.
³⁰ Cry aloud with your voice, O daughter of Gallim! Listen, O Laishah! O you poor Anathoth! ³¹ Madmenah is a fugitive. The inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. ³² This very day he will halt at Nob. He shakes his hand at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

²² this is the word which Jehovah has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and laughed you to scorn. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.
²³ Whom have you defied and blasphemed? And against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Even against the Holy One of Israel.
²⁴ You have defied the Lord by your servants and have said, I have come up to the height of the mountains with the multitude of my chariots, to the innermost parts of Lebanon. And I will cut down the tall cedars of it and the choice fir trees of it and I will enter into its farthest height, the forest of its fruitful field. ²⁵ I have dug and drunk water and with the sole of my feet I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt.
²⁶ Have you not heard how I have done it from afar and formed it of long-ago? Now I have made it occur, that it should be your to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps. ²⁷ Therefore their inhabitants were of small power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were as the grass of the field and as the green herb. As the grass on the housetops and as a field of grain before it is grown up.
²⁸ But I know your sitting down and your going out and your coming in and your raging against me. ²⁹ Because of your raging against me and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your lips and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.
³⁰ And this will be the sign to you. You* will eat this year what grows of itself and in the second year what springs of the same and in the third year sow you* and reap and plant vineyards and eat the fruit of it. ³¹ And the remnant that has escaped from the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward. ³² For out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant and out of Mount Zion those who will escape. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.
³³ Therefore Jehovah says thus concerning the king of Assyria, He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there. Neither will he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. ³⁴ By the way that he came, he will return by the same and he will not come to this city, says Jehovah. ³⁵ For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for my servant David's sake.
³⁶ And the messenger of Jehovah went forth and killed* in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand. And when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will you indeed be to me as a deceitful brook, as waters that fail?

¹¹ For I am with you, says Jehovah, to save you. For I will make a full end of all the nations where I have scattered you, but I will not make a full end of you. But I will discipline you in measure and will in no way leave you unpunished.
¹² For Jehovah says thus, Your hurt is incurable and your wound grievous. ¹³ There is none to plead your cause, that you may be bound up; you have no healing medicines. ¹⁴ All who love you have forgotten you; they do not seek you. For I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the greatness of your iniquity, because your sins were increased.
¹⁵ Why do you cry for your hurt? Your pain is incurable, for the greatness of your iniquity. Because your sins were increased, I have done these things to you.

¹² For the inhabitant of Maroth waits anxiously for good, because evil has come down from Jehovah to the gate of Jerusalem.

²³ and Avvim and Parah and Ophrah,

²⁰ Do not tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

⁸ And he took an earthen vessel for him to scrape himself with it and he sat among the ashes.

²⁶ O daughter of my people, gird with sackcloth and wallow yourself in ashes. You make mourning, as for an only son, a most bitter lamentation. For the destroyer will suddenly come upon us.

²⁹ Let him put his mouth in the dust, perhaps there may be hope.

¹³ Therefore he who is prudent will keep silence in such a time, for it is an evil time.

¹⁰ And when a man's uncle will take him up, even he who burns him, to bring out the bones out of the house and will say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house, Is there yet any with you? and he will say, No, then he will say, Hold your peace, for we may not make mention of the name of Jehovah.

² For it will be that, as wandering birds, as a scattered nest, so will the daughters of Moab be at the fords of the Arnon.

⁴ so will the king of Assyria lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot and with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

² Take the millstones and grind meal. Remove your veil, strip off the train, uncover the leg, pass through the rivers. ³ Your nakedness will be uncovered, yes, your shame will be seen. I will take vengeance and will spare no man.

²² And if you say in your heart, Why have these things come upon me? For the greatness of your iniquity your skirts are uncovered and your heels suffer violence.

⁶ Flee, save your* lives and be like the heath in the wilderness.

⁹ Give wings to Moab, that she may fly and get her away. And her cities will become a desolation, without any to dwell in it.

³⁷ therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you have taken pleasure and all those whom you have loved, with all those whom you have hated, I will even gather them against you on every side. And I will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.

²⁹ And they will deal with you in hatred and will take away all your labor and will leave you naked and bare. And the nakedness of your prostitutions will be uncovered, both your lewdness and your prostitutions.

⁸ For this I will lament and wail. I will go stripped and naked. I will make a wailing like the jackals and a lamentation like the ostriches.

⁵ Behold, I am against you, says Jehovah of hosts and I will uncover your skirts upon your face and I will show the nations your nakedness and the kingdoms your shame.

²⁰ And she said to them, Call me not Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

¹³ And when he came behold, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the wayside watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told it, all the city cried out.

²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came. And when I waited for light, there came darkness.

⁷ I form the light and create darkness. I make peace and create evil. I am Jehovah who does all these things.

⁹ Therefore justice is far from us, nor does righteousness overtake us. We look for light, but, behold, darkness, for brightness, but we walk in obscurity. ¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind. Yes, we grope as those who have no eyes. We stumble at noonday as in the twilight. We are as dead men in desolate places. ¹¹ We all roar like bears and moan greatly like doves. We look for justice, but there is none, for salvation, but it is far off from us.

¹⁵ We looked for peace, but no good came, for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

¹⁹ Have you utterly rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you struck us and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

⁶ Shall the trumpet be blown in a city and the people not be afraid? Shall evil befall a city and Jehovah has not done it?

⁹ For her wounds are incurable. For it has come even to Judah. it reaches to the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.

¹⁷ And it happened, when they had brought them outside, that he said, Escape for your life. Do not look behind you, neither will you stay in all the Plain. Escape to the mountain, lest you are consumed.

²¹ And Moses said to Aaron, What did this people do to you, that you have brought a great sin upon them?

³ Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron and to Piram king of Jarmuth and to Japhia king of Lachish and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,

³⁹ Lachish and Bozkath and Eglon,

³³ After this thing Jeroboam did not return from his evil way, but again made from among all the people priests of the high places. Whoever would, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places. ³⁴ And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth.

¹⁶ And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned and with which he has made Israel to sin.

³¹ And it happened, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took a wife, Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians and went and served Baal and worshiped him.

¹⁸ And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab, for he had the daughter of Ahab as a wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of Jehovah.

¹³ Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. ¹⁴ And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended. Return from me. What you put on me I will bear. And the king of Assyria appointed to Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talants of silver and thirty talants of gold.

¹⁷ And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rab-saris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army to Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they came up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is on the highway of the launder's field.

⁹ and Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah,

⁹ After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem (now he was before Lachish and all his power with him) to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,

³¹ Madmenah is a fugitive. The inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.

⁸ So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

⁸ And I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a document of divorcement, yet treacherous Judah her sister did not fear, but she also went and played the prostitute.

²⁹ Every city flees for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen. They go into the thickets and climb up upon the rocks. Every city is forsaken and not a man dwells in it.

¹¹ And her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her doting than she and in her prostitutions which were more than the prostitutions of her sister.

¹⁴ But I have a few things against you, because you have there some holding-fast the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to cast an offense in the sight the sons of Israel, even to eat idol-sacrifices and to fornicate.

²⁰ But I have this against you, that you are allowing your woman Jezebel, she who calls herself a prophetess, and she who is teaching and misleading my bondservants to fornicate and to eat idol-sacrifices.

¹ I saw after these things, another messenger coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated from his glory. ² And he cried in a mighty voice, saying, Babylon the great has fallen and it has become a residence of demons and a prison of every unclean spirit and a prison of every unclean and having been hated bird. ³ Because out of the wine of the fury of her fornication all the nations have fallen, and the kings of the earth fornicated with her and the merchants of the earth were enriched from the power of her promiscuity.
⁴ And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come forth, my people, out of her, in order that you might not have fellowship together in her sins and in order that you might not receive out of her wounds, ⁵ because her sins were joined to her even up to heaven and God has remembered her wrongdoing.

⁴⁴ and Keilah and Achzib and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages.

² And he killed* Moab and measured them with the line, making them to lie down on the ground. And he measured two lines to put to death and one full line to keep alive. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.

⁸ And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of Jehovah and in the treasures of the king's house and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria.

¹⁴ And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended. Return from me. What you put on me I will bear. And the king of Assyria appointed to Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talants of silver and thirty talants of gold. ¹⁵ And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of Jehovah and in the treasures of the king's house. ¹⁶ At that time Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of Jehovah and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid and gave it to the king of Assyria.

¹ In the thirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha King of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah, that he might not allow anyone to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.
² Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of Jehovah and of the king's house and sent to Ben-hadad king of Syria, who dwelt at Damascus, saying, ³ There is a league between me and you, as between my father and your father. Behold, I have sent you silver and gold. Go, break your league with Baasha King of Israel that he may depart from me.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are vanity and men of high degree are a lie. They will go up in the balances. They are together lighter than vanity.

⁸ It is better to take refuge in Jehovah than to put confidence in man. ⁹ It is better to take refuge in Jehovah than to put confidence in rulers.

³ Do not put your* trust in rulers, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. ⁴ His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth. His thoughts perish in that very day.

⁶ The burden of the beasts of the South.
Through the land of trouble and anguish, from where come the lioness and the lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they carry their riches upon the shoulders of young donkeys and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people who will not profit them.

¹⁵ the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;

³⁵ Jarmuth and Adullam, Socoh and Azekah,

¹ David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him.

⁷ And Beth-zur and Soco and Adullam,

¹⁷ Jehovah will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah–even} the king of Assyria.
¹⁸ And it will happen in that day, that Jehovah will whistle for the fly that is in the outermost part of the rivers of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. ¹⁹ And they will come and will rest all of them in the desolate valleys and in the clefts of the rocks and upon all thorn-hedges and upon all pastures. ²⁰ In that day the Lord will shave with a razor what is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet and it will also consume the beard.
²¹ And it will happen in that day, that a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep. ²² And it will happen, that because of the abundance of milk which they will give he will eat butter. For everyone who is left in the midst of the land will eat butter and honey.
²³ And it will happen in that day, that every place where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silver coins, will be for briers and thorns. ²⁴ Men will come there with arrows and with bow, because all the land will be briers and thorns. ²⁵ And all the hills that were dug with the mattock, you will not come there for fear of briers and thorns, but it will be for the sending forth of oxen and for the treading of sheep.

³ And what will you* do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which will come from far? To whom will you* flee for help? And where will you* leave your* glory?

⁵ Ho, Assyrian, the rod of my anger, the staff in whose hand is my indignation! ⁶ I will send him against a profane nation and against the people of my wrath. I will give him a charge, to take the spoil and to take the prey and to tread them down like the mud of the streets.

¹ Concerning the sons of Ammon. Jehovah says thus: Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does Malcam possess Gad and his people dwell in the cities of it?

⁴¹ You will beget sons and daughters, but they will not be your, for they will go into captivity.

⁵⁶ The tender and delicate woman among you*, who would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye will be evil toward the husband of her bosom and toward her son and toward her daughter, ⁵⁷ and toward her young one who comes out from between her feet and toward her sons whom she will bear, for she will eat them secretly for want of all things, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy will distress you in your gates.

⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria and placed them in Halak and on the Habor, the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes.

²⁰ Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshiped.

¹⁶ Moreover Jehovah said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go and making a tinkling with their feet, ¹⁷ therefore the Lord will kill* with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion and Jehovah will lay bare their secret parts.
¹⁸ In that day, the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets and the hair nets and the crescents, ¹⁹ the pendants and the bracelets and the mufflers, ²⁰ the bonnets and the ankle chains and the sashes and the perfume-boxes and the amulets, ²¹ the rings and the nose-jewels, ²² the festival robes and the cloaks and the shawls and the satchels, ²³ the hand-mirrors and the fine linen and the turbans and the veils.
²⁴ And it will happen, that instead of sweet spices there will be rottenness and instead of a belt, a rope and instead of well set hair, baldness and instead of a robe, a girding of sackcloth, branding instead of beauty. ²⁵ Your men will fall by the sword and your mighty in the war. ²⁶ And her gates will lament and mourn and she will be desolate and sit upon the ground.

² They have gone up to the house and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep. Moab wails over Nebo and over Medeba. On all their heads is baldness. Every beard is cut off.

¹² And in that day the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, called for weeping and for mourning and for baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

⁶ Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house and what your fathers have laid up in store until this day, will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says Jehovah. ⁷ And of your sons who will go forth from you, whom you will beget, they will take away and they will be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.

²⁹ Cut off your hair, O Jerusalem and cast it away and take up a lamentation on the bare heights. For Jehovah has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.

⁶ Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried, nor will men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them,

⁵ Those who fed luxuriously are desolate in the streets. Those who were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. ⁶ For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment and no hands were laid upon her.
⁷ Her ranking men were purer than snow. They were whiter than milk. They were more ruddy in body than rubies. Their polishing was as of sapphire. ⁸ Their visage is blacker than a coal. They are not known in the streets. Their skin clings to their bones. It is withered. It has become like a stick.

¹⁰ And I will turn your* feasts into mourning and all your* songs into lamentation. And I will bring sackcloth upon all loins and baldness upon every head and I will make it as the mourning for an only son and the end of it as a bitter day.
