⁸ Now when Herod saw Jesus he was exceedingly glad. He had long been wanting to see him, because he had heard so much about him, and was hoping to see some miracles performed by him.

¹ Just then Herod, the Tetrarch, heard of Jesus' fame, and said to his courtiers.

¹⁴ King Herod heard it, for the name of Jesus had become well known, People were saying, "John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and on that account these powers are working in him."

²³ Jesus answered. "Doubtless you will quote the proverb to me, 'Physician, heal thyself!' Do also here in your own country all that we hear that you have done in Capernaum."

⁷ Now Herod, the Tetrarch, heard of all that was happening; and he was perplexed because of its being said by someone that John was risen from the dead; ⁸ and by some that Elijah had appeared; and by others that one of the ancient prophets was risen again. ⁹ So Herod said, "I beheaded John, but who is this of whom I am hearing such reports," And he kept seeking to see him.

¹⁹ "Give me, too, this power, so that on whomever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit."
