¹ Then Job answered: ² “How long will you torment me and crush me with your words? ³ Ten times now you have reproached me; you shamelessly mistreat me. ⁴ Even if I have truly gone astray, my error concerns me alone. ⁵ If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my disgrace against me, ⁶ then understand that it is God who has wronged me and drawn His net around me. ⁷ Though I cry out, ‘Violence!’ I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice. ⁸ He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; He has veiled my paths with darkness. ⁹ He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He tears me down on every side until I am gone; He uproots my hope like a tree. ¹¹ His anger burns against me, and He counts me among His enemies. ¹² His troops advance together; they construct a ramp against me and encamp around my tent. ¹³ He has removed my brothers from me; my acquaintances have abandoned me. ¹⁴ My kinsmen have failed me, and my friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ My guests and maidservants count me as a stranger; I am a foreigner in their sight. ¹⁶ I call for my servant, but he does not answer, though I implore him with my own mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own family. ¹⁸ Even little boys scorn me; when I appear, they deride me. ¹⁹ All my best friends despise me, and those I love have turned against me. ²⁰ My skin and flesh cling to my bones; I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. ²¹ Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me. ²² Why do you persecute me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh? ²³ I wish that my words were recorded and inscribed in a book, ²⁴ by an iron stylus on lead, or chiseled in stone forever. ²⁵ But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand upon the earth. ²⁶ Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. ²⁷ I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me! ²⁸ If you say, ‘Let us persecute him, since the root of the matter lies with him,’ ²⁹ then you should fear the sword yourselves, because wrath brings punishment by the sword, so that you may know there is a judgment.”

¹⁶ Finally, after she had pressed him daily with her words and pleaded until he was sick to death,

² “How long will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a blustering wind.

² “How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk.

² “As surely as God lives, who has deprived me of justice—the Almighty, who has embittered my soul—

² Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am frail; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are in agony. ³ My soul is deeply distressed. How long, O LORD, how long?

¹ For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?

¹⁰ Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me, while they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

²¹ His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed.

⁷ See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?”

³ who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows,

¹⁸ Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

²¹ Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

⁶ The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. ⁷ All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, ⁸ but no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

⁷ and if He rescued Lot, a righteous man distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless ⁸ (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—

¹⁰ And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You avenge our blood and judge those who dwell upon the earth?”

⁷ And although he has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, God has not allowed him to harm me.

⁷ And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them as strangers and spoke harshly to them. “Where have you come from?” he asked. “From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We are here to buy food.”

²⁶ When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will bake your bread in a single oven and dole out your bread by weight, so that you will eat but not be satisfied.

²² not one of the men who have seen My glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness—yet have tested Me and disobeyed Me these ten times—

¹² At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

⁶ Is your reverence not your confidence, and the uprightness of your ways your hope? ⁷ Consider now, I plead: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Or where have the upright been destroyed? ⁸ As I have observed, those who plow iniquity and those who sow trouble reap the same. ⁹ By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger they are consumed. ¹⁰ The lion may roar, and the fierce lion may growl, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.

³ I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed. ⁴ His sons are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender.

⁴ When your children sinned against Him, He gave them over to their rebellion. ⁵ But if you would earnestly seek God and ask the Almighty for mercy, ⁶ if you are pure and upright, even now He will rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate.

³ Should your babbling put others to silence? Will you scoff without rebuke?

¹⁴ if you put away the iniquity in your hand, and allow no injustice to dwell in your tents,

⁴ But you even undermine the fear of God and hinder meditation before Him. ⁵ For your iniquity instructs your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty. ⁶ Your own mouth, not mine, condemns you; your own lips testify against you.

¹¹ Are the consolations of God not enough for you, even words spoken gently to you? ¹² Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash,

⁴ You who tear yourself in anger—should the earth be forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place? ⁵ Indeed, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished; the flame of his fire does not glow. ⁶ The light in his tent grows dark, and the lamp beside him goes out. ⁷ His vigorous stride is shortened, and his own schemes trip him up. ⁸ For his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its mesh. ⁹ A trap seizes his heel; a snare grips him. ¹⁰ A noose is hidden in the ground, and a trap lies in his path. ¹¹ Terrors frighten him on every side and harass his every step. ¹² His strength is depleted, and calamity is ready at his side. ¹³ It devours patches of his skin; the firstborn of death devours his limbs. ¹⁴ He is torn from the shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling. ¹⁶ The roots beneath him dry up, and the branches above him wither away. ¹⁷ The memory of him perishes from the earth, and he has no name in the land. ¹⁸ He is driven from light into darkness and is chased from the inhabited world. ¹⁹ He has no offspring or posterity among his people, no survivor where he once lived. ²⁰ Those in the west are appalled at his fate, while those in the east tremble in horror. ²¹ Surely such is the dwelling of the wicked and the place of one who does not know God.”

¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own family.

⁸ I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons,

²⁰ In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.

¹⁷ When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the shepherd, have sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”

³ Should your babbling put others to silence? Will you scoff without rebuke? ⁴ You have said, ‘My doctrine is sound, and I am pure in Your sight.’ ⁵ But if only God would speak and open His lips against you, ⁶ and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves.

¹² If you are wise, you are wise to your own advantage; but if you scoff, you alone will bear the consequences.

⁴ Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.

⁵ For each one should carry his own load.

⁶ Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival would provoke her and taunt her viciously.

³ And they told me, “The remnant who survived the exile are there in the province, in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”

²⁶ May those who gloat in my distress be ashamed and confounded; may those who exalt themselves over me be clothed in shame and reproach.

¹⁶ For I said, “Let them not gloat over me—those who taunt me when my foot slips.”

¹¹ By this I know that You delight in me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.

¹² For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.

¹ In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, “We will eat our own bread and provide our own clothes. Just let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!”

⁸ Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.

¹⁰ This they shall have in return for their pride, for taunting and mocking the people of the LORD of Hosts.

⁷ The LORD will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and of the people of Jerusalem may not be greater than that of Judah.

²⁵ “The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

² To this Jesus replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this fate? ³ No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem?

² and His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

³⁴ They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.

²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your target, so that I am a burden to You?

¹¹ God has delivered me to unjust men; He has thrown me to the clutches of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, but He shattered me; He seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has set me up as His target; ¹³ His archers surround me. He pierces my kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with wound upon wound; He rushes me like a mighty warrior.

⁸ For his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its mesh. ⁹ A trap seizes his heel; a snare grips him. ¹⁰ A noose is hidden in the ground, and a trap lies in his path.

⁹ But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies. ¹⁰ You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us. ¹¹ You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations. ¹² You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale. ¹³ You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us. ¹⁴ You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.

¹⁰ For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us like silver. ¹¹ You led us into the net; You laid burdens on our backs. ¹² You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but You brought us into abundance.

¹² Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see! Is there any sorrow like mine, which was inflicted on me, which the LORD made me suffer on the day of His fierce anger? ¹³ He sent fire from on high, and it overpowered my bones. He spread a net for my feet and turned me back. He made me desolate, faint all the day long.

¹³ But I will spread My net over him, and he will be caught in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will not see it, and there he will die.

³ This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will spread My net over you with a company of many peoples, and they will draw you up in My net.

¹² As they go, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like birds of the air. I will chastise them when I hear them flocking together.

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He blindfolds its judges. If it is not He, then who is it?

³² For He is not a man like me, that I can answer Him, that we can take each other to court.

³ Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked?

¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction. ¹⁶ Should I hold my head high, You would hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me. ¹⁷ You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships assault me in wave after wave.

¹⁵ Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face. ¹⁶ Moreover, this will be my salvation, for no godless man can appear before Him. ¹⁷ Listen carefully to my words; let my declaration ring in your ears. ¹⁸ Behold, now that I have prepared my case, I know that I will be vindicated. ¹⁹ Can anyone indict me? If so, I will be silent and die. ²⁰ Only grant these two things to me, so that I need not hide from You: ²¹ Withdraw Your hand from me, and do not let Your terror frighten me. ²² Then call me, and I will answer, or let me speak, and You can reply. ²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? Reveal to me my transgression and sin.

¹⁷ yet my hands are free of violence and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry for help never be laid to rest. ¹⁹ Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high.

²¹ Oh, that a man might plead with God as he pleads with his neighbor!

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts full well, the schemes by which you would wrong me.

³ If only I knew where to find Him, so that I could go to His seat. ⁴ I would plead my case before Him and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would learn how He would answer, and consider what He would say. ⁶ Would He contend with me in His great power? No, He would certainly take note of me. ⁷ Then an upright man could reason with Him, and I would be delivered forever from my Judge.

²⁰ I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer; when I stand up, You merely look at me.

³⁵ (Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature. Let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser compose an indictment. ³⁶ Surely I would carry it on my shoulder and wear it like a crown.

⁵ For Job has declared, ‘I am righteous, yet God has deprived me of justice.

⁸ Would you really annul My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself?

² I cry out by day, O my God, but You do not answer, and by night, but I have no rest.

⁸ For whenever I speak, I cry out; I proclaim violence and destruction. For the word of the LORD has become to me a reproach and derision all day long.

⁸ Even when I cry out and plead for help, He shuts out my prayer.

² How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save? ³ Why do You make me see iniquity? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me. Strife is ongoing, and conflict abounds.

⁷ So your fathers cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

²³ Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?

²⁶ But when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, darkness fell.

⁸ You have removed my friends from me; You have made me repulsive to them; I am confined and cannot escape.

¹⁹ But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom; they do not know what makes them stumble.

¹⁰ Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of His Servant? Who among you walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD; let him lean on his God.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the dusky mountains. You wait for light, but He turns it into deep gloom and thick darkness.

¹² “Therefore their path will become slick; they will be driven away into the darkness and fall into it. For I will bring disaster upon them in the year of their punishment,” declares the LORD.

⁷ He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains.

⁹ He has barred my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked.

⁶ Therefore, behold, I will hedge up her path with thorns; I will enclose her with a wall, so she cannot find her way.

¹² Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

¹⁷ He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools of judges.

⁷ When I went out to the city gate and took my seat in the public square, ⁸ the young men saw me and withdrew, and the old men rose to their feet. ⁹ The princes refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands. ¹⁰ The voices of the nobles were hushed, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths. ¹¹ For those who heard me called me blessed, and those who saw me commended me, ¹² because I rescued the poor who cried out and the fatherless who had no helper. ¹³ The dying man blessed me, and I made the widow’s heart sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; justice was my robe and my turban.

²⁰ My glory is ever new within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand.’ ²¹ Men listened to me with expectation, waiting silently for my counsel.

¹ “But now they mock me, men younger than I am, whose fathers I would have refused to entrust with my sheep dogs.

¹⁶ Do not be amazed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases. ¹⁷ For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his abundance will not follow him down.

³⁹ You have renounced the covenant with Your servant and sullied his crown in the dust.

⁴⁴ You have ended his splendor and cast his throne to the ground.

⁶ But you will be called the priests of the LORD; they will speak of you as ministers of our God; you will feed on the wealth of nations, and you will boast in their riches.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!

¹¹ Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.

¹³ One day, while Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, ¹⁴ a messenger came and reported to Job: “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, ¹⁵ the Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” ¹⁶ While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” ¹⁷ While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” ¹⁸ While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, ¹⁹ when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

⁷ So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and infected Job with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

¹¹ What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What is my future, that I should be patient?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope.

¹³ Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish. ¹⁴ His confidence is fragile; his security is in a spider’s web. ¹⁵ He leans on his web, but it gives way; he holds fast, but it does not endure. ¹⁶ He is a well-watered plant in the sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden. ¹⁷ His roots wrap around the rock heap; he looks for a home among the stones. ¹⁸ If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’

¹⁴ What He tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man He imprisons cannot be released.

¹¹ My days have passed; my plans are broken off—even the desires of my heart.

¹⁵ where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me?

²⁰ The womb forgets them; the worm feeds on them; they are remembered no more. So injustice is like a broken tree.

³⁵ I have seen a wicked, ruthless man flourishing like a well-rooted native tree, ³⁶ yet he passed away and was no more; though I searched, he could not be found.

¹³ But to You, O LORD, I cry for help; in the morning my prayer comes before You. ¹⁴ Why, O LORD, do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face from me? ¹⁵ From my youth I was afflicted and near death. I have borne Your terrors; I am in despair. ¹⁶ Your wrath has swept over me; Your terrors have destroyed me. ¹⁷ All day long they engulf me like water; they enclose me on every side. ¹⁸ You have removed my beloved and my friend; darkness is my closest companion.

¹¹ My days are like lengthening shadows, and I wither away like grass.

⁵ The Lord is like an enemy; He has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed her strongholds. He has multiplied mourning and lamentation for the Daughter of Judah. ⁶ He has laid waste His tabernacle like a garden booth; He has destroyed His place of meeting. The LORD has made Zion forget her appointed feasts and Sabbaths. In His fierce anger He has despised both king and priest.

⁸ We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; ⁹ persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.

²² For a fire has been kindled by My anger, and it burns to the depths of Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.

²⁴ Why do You hide Your face and consider me as Your enemy?

⁹ His anger has torn me and opposed me; He gnashes His teeth at me. My adversary pierces me with His eyes.

¹⁰ Yet God finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy.

⁴⁶ How long, O LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath keep burning like fire?

⁷ For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath.

⁵ The Lord is like an enemy; He has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed her strongholds. He has multiplied mourning and lamentation for the Daughter of Judah.

¹² The rabble arises at my right; they lay snares for my feet and build siege ramps against me.

⁵ Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger; the staff in their hands is My wrath. ⁶ I will send him against a godless nation; I will dispatch him against a people destined for My rage, to take spoils and seize plunder, and to trample them down like clay in the streets.

²³ I will place it in the hands of your tormentors, who told you: ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you,’ so that you made your back like the ground, like a street to be traversed.”

²¹ For now you are of no help; you see terror, and you are afraid. ²² Have I ever said, ‘Give me something; offer me a bribe from your wealth; ²³ deliver me from the hand of the enemy; redeem me from the grasp of the ruthless’?

⁷ Surely He has now exhausted me; You have devastated all my family.

¹¹ Among all my enemies I am a disgrace, and among my neighbors even more. I am dreaded by my friends—they flee when they see me on the street.

¹¹ My beloved and friends shun my disease, and my kinsmen stand at a distance.

²⁰ Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found no one.

¹⁸ You have removed my beloved and my friend; darkness is my closest companion.

⁵⁶ But this has all happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.

¹⁶ At my first defense, no one stood with me, but everyone deserted me. May it not be charged against them.

²³ Now in those days the advice of Ahithophel was like the consultation of the word of God. Such was the regard that both David and Absalom had for Ahithophel’s advice.

¹² For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide. ¹³ But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend. ¹⁴ We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.

²⁴ A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.

¹⁰ For I have heard the whispering of many: “Terror is on every side! Report him; let us report him!” All my trusted friends watch for my fall: “Perhaps he will be deceived so that we may prevail against him and take our vengeance upon him.”

⁵ Do not rely on a friend; do not trust in a companion. Seal the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms. ⁶ For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man’s enemies are the members of his own household.

²¹ Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.

¹⁸ I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the Scripture: ‘The one who shares bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’

³¹ if the men of my house have not said, ‘Who is there who has not had his fill?’— ³² but no stranger had to lodge on the street, for my door has been open to the traveler—

³ Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy, for we have endured much contempt.

They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” ¹⁶ While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” ¹⁷ While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels, and took them away. ¹⁹ when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

⁹ Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!” ¹⁰ “You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

¹ “My spirit is broken; my days are extinguished; the grave awaits me.

²³ From there, Elisha went up to Bethel, and as he was walking up the road, a group of boys came out of the city and jeered at him, chanting, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”

⁵ The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.

¹⁴ A despairing man should have the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes the fear of the Almighty. ¹⁵ But my brothers are as faithless as wadis, as seasonal streams that overflow,

⁹ Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

²⁰ My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.

⁴ In return for my love they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. ⁵ They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

⁴⁸ But Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

⁴ “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life. ⁵ But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” ⁶ “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “He is in your hands, but you must spare his life.”

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and encrusted with dirt; my skin is cracked and festering.

³⁰ My skin grows black and peels, and my bones burn with fever.

³ When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day long. ⁴ For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was drained as in the summer heat. Selah

³¹ if the men of my house have not said, ‘Who is there who has not had his fill?’—

²⁶ For they persecute the one You struck and recount the pain of those You wounded.

³ You eat the flesh of my people after stripping off their skin and breaking their bones. You chop them up like flesh for the cooking pot, like meat in a cauldron.”

³⁵ (Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature. Let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser compose an indictment.

¹ Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary stylus: Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

⁸ Go now, write it on a tablet in their presence and inscribe it on a scroll; it will be for the days to come, a witness forever and ever.

¹¹ Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings. ¹² Fasten both stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear their names on his two shoulders as a memorial before the LORD.

²¹ The twelve stones are to correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.

¹⁶ The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.

² And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, set up large stones and coat them with plaster. ³ Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.

⁸ And you shall write distinctly upon these stones all the words of this law.”

¹ “The sin of Judah is written with an iron stylus, engraved with a diamond point on the tablets of their hearts and on the horns of their altars.

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

¹⁸ And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

¹⁹ Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high.

²³ Yet if there is a messenger on his side, one mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, ²⁴ to be gracious to him and say, ‘Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found his ransom,’

¹⁴ May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

³⁵ And they remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.

¹¹ for their Redeemer is strong; He will take up their case against you.

¹⁴ Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “For your sake, I will send to Babylon and bring them all as fugitives, even the Chaldeans, in the ships in which they rejoice.

⁵ For your husband is your Maker—the LORD of Hosts is His name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.

²⁰ “The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,” declares the LORD. ²¹ “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and grandchildren, from now on and forevermore,” says the LORD.

³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of Hosts is His name. He will fervently plead their case so that He may bring rest to the earth, but turmoil to those who live in Babylon.

²² Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, ²³ so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. ²⁴ Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life. ²⁵ Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. ²⁶ For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself. ²⁷ And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. ²⁸ Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice ²⁹ and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

⁷ In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace

¹⁴ Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them: “Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell securely.

¹¹ You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.

¹⁵ As for me, I will behold Your face in righteousness; when I awake, I will be satisfied in Your presence.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

¹² Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

⁵³ For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

²¹ who, by the power that enables Him to subject all things to Himself, will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body.

² Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.

⁷ Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him—even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen.

¹⁷ I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come forth from Jacob, and a scepter will arise from Israel. He will crush the skulls of Moab and strike down all the sons of Sheth.

²⁶ My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

¹⁹ Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your dew is like the dew of the morning, and the earth will bring forth her dead.

¹³ All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. For this is the only one belonging to Jeroboam who will receive a proper burial, because only in him has the LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the house of Jeroboam.

²² Why do you persecute me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh?

⁷ Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf or speak deceitfully for Him? ⁸ Would you show Him partiality or argue in His defense? ⁹ Would it be well when He examined you? Could you deceive Him like a man? ¹⁰ Surely He would rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality. ¹¹ Would His majesty not terrify you? Would the dread of Him not fall upon you?

²² He despairs of his return from darkness; he is marked for the sword.

⁴ Is it for your reverence that He rebukes you and enters into judgment against you?

⁵ Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

⁷ But the LORD abides forever; He has established His throne for judgment.

¹⁰ The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged; they will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ Then men will say, “There is surely a reward for the righteous! There is surely a God who judges the earth!”

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and in the sight of your eyes, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment.

¹⁴ For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil.

¹ “Do not judge, or you will be judged. ² For with the same judgment you pronounce, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

¹ Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. ² Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. ³ For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and you will have his approval. ⁴ For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not carry the sword in vain. He is God’s servant, an agent of retribution to the wrongdoer.

¹¹ Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother and judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a practitioner of the law, but a judge of it. ¹² There is only one Lawgiver, the One who is able to save and destroy. But who are you to judge the other?
