²² But it is a mischevious and wicked people. Their young men belong all to the snare, and shall be shut into prison houses. They shall be carried away captive, and no man shall loose them. They shall be trodden under foot, and no man shall labour to bring them again.

²⁹ And thou shalt grope at noonday as the blind gropeth in darkness, and shalt not come to the right way. And thou shalt suffer violence and wrong all thy life long, and no man shall help thee. ³⁰ Thou shalt be betrothed unto a wife, and another shall lie with her. ²⁰ that he may hear the mournings of such as be in captivity, and deliver the children that are appointed unto death,

⁷ Your land lieth waste, your cities are burnt up, your enemies devour your land, and ye must be fain to stand, and look upon it: and it is desolate, as it were with enemies in a battle.

¹⁷ Is this he that made the world in a manner waste, and laid the cities to the ground, which let not his prisoners go home?"

² which sendeth her message over the sea in ships of reeds upon the water. Get ye hence, ye speedy messengers, to a nation that is scattered abroad and robbed of that they had: a fearful nation from their beginning hitherto; a nation trodden down by little and little, whose land the floods have spoiled.

¹⁸ It will come to pass, that whoso escapeth the terrible cry, shall fall in to the pit. And if he come out of the pit, he shall be taken with the snare. For the windows above shall be opened, and the foundations of the earth shall move.

²² These shall be coupled together as prisoners be, and shall be shut up in one ward and punished innumerable days.

¹ In the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians came down, to lay siege unto all the strong cities of Judah.

⁷ That thou mayest open the eyes of the blind; let out the prisoners, and them that sit in darkness, out of the dungeon house.

¹³ I shall wake him up with righteousness, and order all his ways. He shall build my city, and let out my prisoners: and that neither for gifts or rewards, sayeth the LORD of Hosts.

²³ And will put it in their hand that trouble thee: which have spoken to thy soul, "Stoop down, that we may go over thee: make thy body even with the ground, and as the street to go upon."

⁴ For thus hath the LORD said: My people went down aforetime into Egypt, there to be strangers. Afterward did the king of the Assyrians oppress them for naught. ⁵ And now what profit is it to me, sayeth the LORD? That my people is freely carried away, and brought into heaviness by their rulers, and my name ever still blasphemed, sayeth the LORD?

⁹ All the beasts of the field, and all the beasts of the wood, shall come to devour him.

¹⁷ Israel is a scattered flock, the Lions have dispersed them. First the king of the Assyrians devoured them, last of all this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon hath bruised all their bones.

³⁴ 'Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured and destroyed me, he hath made me an empty vessel. He swallowed me up like a dragon, and filled his belly with my delicates: he hath cast me out. ³⁵ He hath taken my substance away and the thing that was left me hath he carried unto Babylon,' sayeth the daughter that dwelleth in Zion. 'Yea, and my blood also, unto the Chaldeans,' sayeth Jerusalem.

⁴ But in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth Month, the tenth day of the Month, it happened that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, with all his Host, came before Jerusalem: and besieged it, and made them bulwarks round about it. ⁵ And this besieging of the city endured unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. ⁶ And in the fourth Month, the ninth day of the Month, there was so great hunger in the city that there were no more victuals for the people of the land. ⁷ So all the soldiers brake away, and fled out of the city by night through the way of the port between the two walls by the king's garden. Now the Chaldeans had compassed the city round about; yet went these men their way toward the wilderness. ⁸ And so the Chaldeans followed upon them, and took Zedekiah the king in the field of Jericho, when his host was run from him. ⁹ So they carried the king away prisoner to Riblah, unto the king of Babylon in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him. ¹⁰ The king of Babylon also caused Zedekiah's sons to be slain before his face; yea and put all the princes of Judah to death at Riblah. ¹¹ Moreover, he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, caused him to be bound with chains, to be carried unto Babylon, and let him live in prison till he died.

³¹ In the thirty seventh year after that Jehoiachin the king of Judah was carried away in the twenty fifth day of the twelfth Month, Evilmerodach king of Babylon, the same year that he reigned, gave Jehoiachin the king of Judah his pardon, and let him out of prison,

⁴¹ And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept on it, ⁴² saying, "If thou hadst known those things which belong unto thy peace, even at thy time: But now are they hid from thine eyes. ⁴³ For the days shall come upon thee; that thy enemies shall cast a bank about thee, and compass thee round and keep thee in on every side; ⁴⁴ And make thee even with the ground, with thy children which are in thee. And they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knowest not the time of thy visitation."

²⁰ "And when ye see Jerusalem besieged with a host, then understand that the desolation of the same is nigh. ²¹ Then let them which are in Jewry fly to the mountains. And let them which are in the midst of it, depart out. And let not them that are in other countries, come therein. ²² For these be the days of vengeance, to fulfill all that are written. ²³ But woe be to them that be with child, and to them that give suck in those days, for there shall be great trouble in the land: and wrath over all this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall on the edge of the sword. And they shall be led captive into all nations. And Jerusalem shall be trodden underfoot of the gentiles, until the time of the gentiles be fulfilled.
