¹ Darest thou draw out Leviathan with an angle, or bind his tongue with a snare? ² Canst thou put a ring in the nose of him, or bore his jaw through with an awl? ³ Will he make many fair words with thee, thinkest thou, or flatter thee? ⁴ Will he make a covenant with thee? Or art thou able to compel him to do thee continual service? ⁵ Wilt thou take thy pastime with him as with a bird? ¹⁴ Thou smitest the heads of Leviathan in pieces, and givest him to be meat for the people in the wilderness.

¹ In that day, the LORD with his heavy, great, and long sword shall visit Leviathan that fugitive serpent: even Leviathan that crooked serpent, and shall slay the dragon in the sea.

²⁸ And because thou settest up thy bristles against me, and that thy raging is come up to mine ears: therefore I will put a ring in thy nose and a bit in thy lips, and will bring thee back again the same way thou camest.

²⁹ Therefore thy furiousness against me, and thy pride is come before me. I will put a ring in thy nose, and a bridle bit in the jaws of thee, and turn thee about, even the same way thou camest.

⁴ I will put a hook in thy jaws, and hang all the fish in thy waters upon thy scales; after that I will draw thee out of thy waters, yea, and all the fish of the waters that hang upon thy scales. ⁵ I will cast thee out upon the dry land with the fish of thy waters, so that thou shalt lie upon the field. Thou shalt not be gathered nor taken up: but shall be meat for the beasts of the field, and for the fowls of the air:

²¹ Their mouths are softer than butter, and yet have they battle in their mind: their words are smoother than oil, and yet be they very swords.

¹ A soft answer putteth down displeasure, but froward words provoke anger.

²³ The poor maketh supplication and prayeth meekly; but the rich giveth a rough answer.

¹⁵ With patience may a prince be pacified, and with a soft tongue may rigorousness be broken.

⁵ Thou madest him lower than the angels, to crown him with glory and worship. ⁶ Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands; and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet -

²⁵ And when their hearts were merry, they said, "Send for Samson and let him play before us." And they fetched Samson out of the prison house, and he played before them, and they set him between the pillars. ²⁶ And Samson said unto the lad that led him by the hand, "Set me that I may touch the pillars that the house stands upon, and that I may lean to them." ²⁷ And the house was full of men and women. And there was all the lords of the Philistines. ⁴ He is wise of heart, and mighty in strength. Who ever prospered that took part against him?

⁹ Is thine arm then like the arm of God? Maketh thy voice such a sound as his doth?

¹¹ Serve the LORD in fear, and rejoice unto him in reverence. ¹² Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and so ye perish from the right way. For his wrath shall be kindled shortly: blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

⁵ "Seeing thou art weary in running with the footmen, how wilt thou then run with the horses? In a peaceable sure land thou mayest be safe, but how wilt thou do in the furious pride of Jordan?

¹⁷ And he said unto me, "Hast thou seen this thou son of man? Thinketh the house of Israel that it is but a trifle to do these abominations here? Should they fill the land full of wickedness, and undertake to provoke me unto anger? Yea, and purposely to cast up their noses upon me? ¹⁸ Therefore will I also do something in my wrathful displeasure: so that mine eye shall not oversee them, neither will I spare them. Yea, and though they cry in mine ears with loud voice, yet will I not hear them."

²² Either, shall we provoke the Lord? Or are we stronger than he?

⁵ Now therefore if ye will hear my voice and keep mine covenant: ye shall be mine own above all nations, for all the earth is mine.

¹⁴ Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD's, thy God, and the earth with all that therein is:

¹¹ Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, power and glory, victory and praise: for all that is in heaven and in earth is thine, and thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art lifted up a head above all. ¹² And riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all, and in thine hand is power and strength, and in thine hand it is to make great and to give strength unto all. ¹³ And now our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. For what am I? And what is my people, that would obtain strength to be so willing? ¹⁴ But all is of thee, and of that we received of thine hand we have given thee.

² "May a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? ³ Is it any advantage to the Almighty that thou art righteous? Or what doth it profit him, that thy ways are perfect?

⁷ If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? Or what receiveth he of thy hands:

³ For thou shalt prevent him with the blessings of goodness, and shalt set a crown of pure gold upon his head.

¹³ It happened afterward, that the LORD spake to me again, and said, "What seest thou? And I said: I do see a seething pot, looking out of the north hitherward." ¹⁴ Then said the LORD unto me, "Out of the north shall come a plague upon all the dwellers of the land.

⁵ Destruction goeth before him, and burning cressettes go from his feet.

¹⁹ "Hast thou given the horse his strength? Or learned him to bow down his neck with fear:

¹⁶ lo, how strong he is in his loins, and what power he hath in the navel of his body.

¹⁴ had not I defended him from the grave, and delivered him from death. O death, I will be thy death: O hell, I will be thy sting.

⁵⁵ "Death where is thy sting? Hell where is thy victory?" ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin: and the strength of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be unto God, which hath given us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴ Howbeit, I knew that thou art obstinate, and that thy neck hath an iron vein, and thy brow is of brass.

³ Where as thou, O LORD, lookest only upon faith and truth. Thou hast scourged them, but they took no repentance: thou hast corrected them for amendment, but they refused thy correction. They made their faces harder than stone, and would not amend.

¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an Adamant stone lest they should hear the law and words, which the LORD of Hosts sent in his holy spirit by the prophets afore time. Wherefore the LORD of Hosts was very wroth at them.

²⁸ So when they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, he delivereth them out of their distress.

⁴ But the LORD hurled a great wind in to the sea, so that there was a mighty tempest in the sea: insomuch that the ship was like to go in pieces. ⁵ And the mariners were afraid and cried every man unto his god, and cast out the goods that were in the ship in to the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah gat him under the hatches and laid him down and slumbered. ⁶ And the master of the ship came to him and said unto him, "Why slumberest thou? Up! And call unto thy god, that God may think on us, that we perish not."

²¹ He breaketh the ground with the hooves of his feet cheerfully in his strength, and runneth to meet the harness men. ²² He layeth aside all fear, his stomach is not abated, neither starteth he a back for any sword. ²³ Though the quivers rattle upon him, though the spear and shield glister; ²⁴ yet rusheth he in fearlessly, and beateth upon the ground. ¹⁴ And Uzziah provided them, throughout all the host, shields, spears, helmets, habergeons, bows and slings for stones.

¹⁵ Behold, I will make thee a treading cart and a new flail, that thou mayest thresh and grind the mountains, and bring the hills to powder.

² The Earth was void and empty and darkness was upon the deep, and the spirit of God moved upon the water.

¹⁵ Nevertheless, thou shalt go unto thy fathers in peace, and shalt be buried when thou art of a good age:

³ Speak, and tell him, 'Thus sayeth the LORD God: Behold, O Pharaoh thou king of Egypt, I will upon thee, thou great dragon that liest in the waters; thou that sayest, 'The water is mine; I have made it myself.'

¹ And there appeared a great wonder in heaven.
