²⁸ For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, and a flame from the city of Sihon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites and the men of the hills of Arnon! ²⁹ Woe be to thee, Moab! O people of Chemosh, ye are forlorn! His sons are put to flight and his daughters brought captive unto Sihon, king of the Amorites! ³⁰ Their light is out, from Heshbon unto Dibon! And we made a wilderness even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba!"

³³ And Moses gave unto the children of Gad and of Reuben, and unto the half tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land that belonged unto the cities thereof in the coasts of the country round about. ³⁴ And the children of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth Aroer, ³⁵ Atrothshophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, ³⁶ Bethnimra and Bethharan fenced cities, and they built folds for their sheep. ³⁷ And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, ³⁸ Nebo, Baalmeon — and turned their names — and Sibmah also: and gave names unto the cities which they built.

¹² And when we had conquered this land the same time, I gave from Aroer, which is upon the river of Arnon, and half mount Gilead and the cities thereof unto the Reubenites, and Gadites.

² Sihon king of the Amorites that dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which lieth on the brim of the river of Arnon, and to the middle of the river, and half Gilead unto the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;

⁹ from Aroer that lieth on the brim of the river Arnon, with the city in the midst of the river. And all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

¹ This is the heavy burden upon Moab: Ar of Moab was destroyed and overthrown in the night season: Kir also, in Moab, perished in the night and vanished away. ² They went up to the idols' house, even to Dibon to the high places, to weep for Nebo; and Moab did mourn for Medeba. All their heads were bald, and all their beards shaven.

⁴ Heshbon and Elealeh cried, that their voice was heard unto Jahaz. The worthies also of Moab bleared and cried for very sorrow of their minds.

⁷ Therefore shall Moab make lamentation because of the Moabites that shall be slain: yea, they shall wail all together. Because of the foundations of the city of brick shall ye complain, even ye lame people that are left only behind. ⁸ The suburbs also of Heshbon were made waste, and the princes of the Gentiles hewed down the vineyards of Sibmah, which were planted with noble grapes, and spread unto Jazer, and went unto the end of the desert; whose branches stretched their fellows forth beyond the sea. ⁹ Therefore I mourned for Jazer, and for the vineyards of Sibmah with great sorrow. I poured my tears upon Heshbon and Elealeh, for all their songs were laid down, in their harvest and gathering of their grapes.

²¹ And misery shall come upon the plain land: Namely, upon Holon, and Jahzah, upon Mephaath ²² and Dibon, upon Nebo, and the house of Diblathaim, ²³ upon Kiriathaim and Bethgamul, upon Bethmeon, ²⁴ and Kerioth, upon Bozrah and all the cities of the land of Moab, whether they lie far or near.
