⁴ And Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with the Ephraimites. And the men of Gilead smote the Ephraimites, because they said, "Ye Gileadites are but renegades of Ephraim among the Ephraimites and the Manassites!"

³⁹ And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and put out the Amorites that were therein. ⁴⁰ And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh and he dwelt therein.

¹⁰ And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "The LORD be witness between us if we do not according to thy words."

⁴ Hear, O thou our God, how we are despised! Turn their shame upon their own head, that thou mayest give them over into despising in the land of their captivity.

⁹ Like as the children of Ephraim, which being harnessed and carrying bows, turned themselves back in the time of battle:

¹³ The wicked falleth into the snare through the malice of his own mouth; but the just shall escape out of peril.

¹ A soft answer putteth down displeasure, but froward words provoke anger.
