25 The baptism of John: whence was it? From heaven, or of men?" Then they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we shall say from heaven; he will say unto us, 'Why did ye not then believe him?'

Matthew 3:1-12

1 In those days John the Baptist came, and preached in the wilderness of Jewry, 2 saying, "Repent: the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 3 This is he of whom it is spoken by the Prophet Isaiah, which sayeth, "The voice of a crier in wilderness, 'Prepare the Lord's way and make his paths straight.'" 4 This John had his garment of camel's hair, and a girdle of a skin about his loins; his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Jewry, and all the regions round about Jordan, 6 and were baptised of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, "O generation of vipers, who hath taught you to flee from the vengeance to come? 8 Bring forth therefore the fruits belonging to repentance: 9 And see that you think not to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father': for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 Even now is the axe put unto the root of the trees: so that every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11 I baptise you in water in token of repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptise you with the holy ghost and with fire: 12 Which hath also his fan in his hand, and will purge his floor, and gather the wheat into His garner; and will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Matthew 11:7-15

7 And as they departed, Jesus began to speak unto the people, of John, "What for to see went ye out into the wilderness? Went ye to see a reed shaken in the wind? 8 Other, what went ye out for to see? Went ye to see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. 9 But what went ye out for to see? Went ye out to see a prophet? Yea I say unto you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he, of whom it is written, 'Behold, I send my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy way before thee.' 11 Verily I say unto you, Among the children of women arose there not a greater than John the Baptist: Notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven, is greater than he. 12 From the time of John Baptist, hitherto, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, 13 and they that go to it with violence pluck it unto them. For all the prophets and the law prophesied unto the time of John. 14 And also if ye will receive it, this is Elijah, which should come. 15 He that hath ears to hear withal, let him hear.

Matthew 17:12-13

12 And I say unto you, that Elijah is come already: And they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they lusted. In likewise shall also the son of man suffer of them." 13 Then the disciples perceived that he spake unto them of John Baptist.

And as he walked in the temple, there came to him the high priests, and the scribes, and the elders, 28 and said unto him, "By what authority doest thou these things? And who gave thee this authority, to do these things?" 29 Jesus answered, and said unto them, "I will also ask of you a certain thing, and answer ye me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 The baptism of John: was it from heaven, or of men? Answer me." 31 And they thought in themselves, saying, "If we shall say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then did ye not believe him?' 32 But if we shall say, 'Of men,' then fear we the people. For all men counted John, that he was a very prophet." 33 And they answered, and said unto Jesus, "We cannot tell." And Jesus answered, and said unto them, "Neither will I tell you, by what authority I do these things."

And he shall be filled with the holy ghost, even in his mother's womb: 16 and many of the children of Israel shall he turn to their Lord God. 17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the unbelievers to the wisdom of the just men: to make the people ready for the Lord."

Luke 1:67-80

67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the holy ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people. 69 And hath raised up a horn of salvation unto us, in the house of his servant David. 70 Even as he promised by the mouth of his holy prophets which were since the world began. 71 That we should be saved from our enemies: And from the hands of all that hate us: 72 To fulfill the mercy promised to our fathers; And to remember his holy covenant; 73 And to perform the oath, which he sware to our father Abraham, for to give us. 74 That we, delivered out of the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear: 75 all the days of our life, in such holiness and righteousness that are accept before him. 76 And thou child, shalt be called the prophet of the highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways: 77 And to give knowledge of salvation unto his people, for the remission of sins: 78 Through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day spring from on high hath visited us: 79 To give light to them that sat in darkness, and in shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace." 80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in wilderness: till the day came, when he should show himself unto the Israelites.

Luke 3:2-20

2 When Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests: The word of God came unto John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the coasts about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet, which sayeth, "The voice of a crier in wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low: And crooked things shall be made straight: and the rough ways shall be made smooth. 6 And all flesh shall see the saviour sent of God." 7 Then said he to the people that were come to be baptised of him, "O generation of vipers: who hath taught you to fly away from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth due fruits of repentance; And begin not to say in yourselves, we have Abraham to our father. For I say unto you: God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 9 Now also is the axe laid unto the root of the trees: So that every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit shall be hewn down, and cast into the fire." 10 And the people asked him, saying, "What shall we do then?" 11 He answered and said unto them, "He that hath two coats, let him part with him that hath none: And he that hath meat, let him do likewise." 12 Then came there publicans to be baptised, and said unto him, "Master, what shall we do?" 13 And he said unto them, "Require no more than that which is appointed unto you." 14 The soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, "And what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do violence to no man: neither trouble any man wrongfully: But be content with your wages." 15 As the people were in a doubt, and all men disputed in their hearts of John: Whether he were very Christ; 16 John answered and said to them all, "I baptise you with water, but a stronger than I cometh after me, whose shoe latchet I am not worthy to unloose: he will baptise you with the holy ghost, and with fire, 17 which hath his fan in his hand, and will purge his floor, and will gather the corn into his barn: But the chaff will he burn with fire that never shall be quenched." 18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. 19 Then Herod the Tetrarch; when he was rebuked of him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done; 20 added this above all, and laid John in prison.

Luke 7:28-35

28 For I say unto you, A greater prophet than John, among women's children, is there none. Nevertheless, one that is less in the kingdom of God, is greater than he." 29 And all the people that heard, and the publicans, justified God and were baptised with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and scribes despised the counsel of God, against themselves, and were not baptised of him. 31 And the Lord said, "Whereunto shall I liken the men of this generation: and what thing are they like? 32 They are like unto children sitting in the market place, and crying one to another, and saying, 'We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced: We have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.' 33 For John Baptist came unto you neither eating bread, nor drinking wine, and ye say, 'He hath the devil.' 34 The son of man is come, and eateth and drinketh, and ye say, 'Behold a man which is a glutton, and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners.' 35 Yet is wisdom justified of all her children."

Luke 20:5

John 1:25-34

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, "Why baptisest thou then, if thou be not Christ, nor Elijah, neither a prophet?" 26 John answered them, saying, "I baptise with water: but one is come among you, whom ye know not. 27 He it is that cometh after me, which was before me, whose shoe latchet I am not worthy to unloose." 28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John did baptise. 29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, "Behold, the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, 'After me cometh a man, which went before me. For he was before me, 31 and I knew him not: but that he should be declared to Israel, therefore am I come, baptising with water.'" 32 And John bare record, saying, "I saw the spirit descend from heaven, like unto a dove, and abide upon him, and I knew him not: 33 But he that sent me to baptise in water, the same said unto me, 'Upon whom thou shalt see the spirit descend, and tarry still on him, the same is he which baptiseth with the holy ghost.' 34 And I saw it, and bare record, that this is the son of God."

John 3:26-36

26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, "Rabbi, behold he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold the same baptiseth, and all men come to him." 27 John answered, and said, "A man can receive nothing at all except it be given him from heaven. 28 Ye yourselves are witnesses, how that I said, 'I am not Christ: but am sent before him.' 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: But the friend of the bridegroom which standeth by and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this, my joy, is fulfilled. 30 He must increase: and I must decrease. 31 He that cometh from on high is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and speaketh of the earth. He that cometh from heaven, is above all: 32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth: but no man receiveth his testimony. 33 Howbeit, he that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. 34 For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God. For God giveth not the spirit by measure. 35 The father loveth the son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 He that believeth on the son, hath everlasting life. And he that believeth not the son, shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him."

John 5:33-36

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth: 34 but I receive not the record of man. Nevertheless, these things I say, that ye might be safe. 35 He was a burning, and a shining light; and ye would for a season have rejoiced in his light. 36 But I have greater witness than the witness of John. For the works which the father hath given me to finish: the same works that I do: bear witness of me, that the father sent me.

John 5:44-47

44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh of God only? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to my father. There is one that accuseth you, even Moses in whom ye trust. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: For he wrote of me. 47 But seeing ye believe not his writing, how shall ye believe my words?"

John 10:25-26

John 12:37-43

37 And though he had done so many miracles before them, yet believed not they on him, 38 that the saying of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, that he spake, "Lord who shall believe our saying? And to whom is the arm of the Lord opened?" 39 Therefore could they not believe, because that Isaiah saith again, 40 "He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their hearts: that they should not see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and should be converted and I should heal them." 41 Such things said Isaiah when he saw his glory, and spake of him. 42 Nevertheless, among the chief rulers many believed on him: but because of the Pharisees they would not be a known of it, lest they should be excommunicated. 43 For they loved the praise that is given of men, more than the praise that cometh of God.
