³ he that hath such an expectation should purify himself, even as he is pure.

⁴⁸ be ye therefore perfect, even as your father who is in heaven is perfect.

³⁶ be ye therefore merciful, as your father is merciful.

⁹ making no difference between us and them, having purified their hearts by the faith.

⁴ and probation, hope: ⁵ now hope will not deceive us, because the love of God is diffused thro' our hearts, by the holy spirit which is given to us;

¹² besides Esaias saith, "there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope."

¹ since then, we have these promises, my dear brethren, let us cleanse our selves from all impurity, whether of body or mind, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

⁵ for the sake of that happiness, which you hope for, and is reserv'd for you in heaven, of which you have already been inform'd by the preaching of the truth, that is, the gospel:

¹⁶ Now may our Lord Jesus Christ, and God our father, who has loved us, and by his favour given us the advantageous hopes of eternal joys, consolate your souls,

⁷ that being justified by his favour, we should have the inheritance of eternal life, according to our hopes.

¹⁸ that by two immutable things in which it was impossible for God to deceive us, we, who have no other refuge to fly to, but to maintain our present hopes,

²⁶ and indeed we wanted an high priest of such a character, one that is holy, innocent, undefiled, one that is separated from sinful men, and exalted above the heavens; one who was under no necessity,

¹⁴ seek peace with all men, and sanctity of life, without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁴ by which we have receiv'd the most inestimable promises, that thereby you might become partakers of the divine perfections, after having escap'd from the corruption of a sensual world.

¹⁴ since then, my dear brethren, your expectations are such, take care to appear before him, without any defect or blemish, in order to be happy; and be persuaded,

⁶ he that says he is attach'd to Christ, ought to regulate his conduct by his example.

¹⁷ the divine love to us will be in the highest degree, if our condition in this world be the same as was that of Christ Jesus; so that we may appear with confidence in the day of judgment.
