¹ I exhort you therefore, above all things, to present supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving for all men: ² for kings, and for all that are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in the practice of all piety and virtue; ³ for such offices are commendable, and agreeable to God our saviour, ⁴ who wills that all men be saved, by embracing the truth. ⁵ for there is but one God, and but one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, ⁶ who gave himself for the redemption of all mankind: this is what was to be promulg'd in due time: ⁷ for this I was establish'd a herald and an apostle, I speak the truth without disguise, a doctor to instruct the Gentiles in the true faith. ⁸ I direct therefore that the men pray in publick and private, lifting up their hands to heaven with innocence, charity, and composure. ⁹ and that the women be decent in their apparel, adorned with modesty and reserve, not with broider'd hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; ¹⁰ but, as becomes women, who make a profession of religion, to be adorn'd with virtue. ¹¹ Let the women with submissive silence attend to instruction. ¹² for I don't allow a woman to be a teacher, nor to dictate to her husband; but let her be silent. ¹³ for Adam was the first that was form'd, then Eve. ¹⁴ Adam was not seduc'd, but the woman, who was the cause of his transgression. ¹⁵ however the women may be saved by educating their children, and persevering themselves in faith, in charity, in holiness and chastity. this may be depended upon as true.

⁹ After this manner do you therefore pray: "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. thy kingdom come. ¹⁰ thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

³⁰ God has been pleas'd to over-look this state of ignorance: but now he enjoins all men every where to repent:

⁸ First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is celebrated through the whole world.

¹⁷ but God be thanked, that you, who were the vassals of sin, have sincerely obeyed in the manner the gospel prescribed.

³ I acquainted you chiefly with what I received myself, that Christ died for our sins, as the scriptures foretold:

⁶ I therefore desired Titus, as he had begun, to finish this contribution among you.

¹³ Wherefore I desire that you be not dejected at the tribulations I am under for your sake, which are matter of glory to you.

²⁰ and this the burthen of the song, "thanks be to God, even the father, for his son Jesus Christ our Lord."

³ I thank God, for your remembrance of me,

¹² may the Lord make you increase and abound in mutual love, in love towards all men, as we do towards you:

³ We are oblig'd, my brethren, to render thanks to God continually upon your account, as it is but just; since your faith still improves, and your mutual love is always increasing.

⁴ who wills that all men be saved, by embracing the truth.

⁵ as for the widow, who is really such, and without any assistance, let her place all her hopes in God, and be assiduous in supplication and prayer.

²⁴ a christian must not be litigious, but easy to all men, qualify'd to instruct,

¹¹ For the divine savour has display'd its salutary effects to all mankind:

² to speak evil of no man. to avoid contention, to be moderate and entirely inoffensive to all men.

¹¹ but we desire that every one of you may shew the same concern, continuing to discharge the condition upon which your hopes are founded: that ye be not unactive,

¹⁶ confess then to one another the offences you have committed, and pray for one another, that you may be healed; the fervent prayer of a virtuous man has great influence.

⁶ they were both of them sincerely pious; observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord; with unspotted reputation.

²⁵ At that time there dwelt at Jerusalem one Simeon, an honest, religious man, one who expected the appearance of the Messiah, and was endued with the spirit of prophecy.

²² they answered, Cornelius the centurion, a man of probity and piety, one that has an universal good character among the Jews, was divinely admonish'd by an holy angel to send for you to his house, to hear what you had to say to him.

¹⁶ and 'tis my endeavour to preserve a conscience free from reproach both with respect to God, and with respect to men.

¹⁸ do all you can to live peaceably, if it be possible, with all mankind.

¹ Be every one of you subject to the ruling powers. for every ruler holds of God: the rulers in being are constituted by God. ² so that he who opposes the ruler, disobeys the orders of God: and will be punished too for resisting, by those very powers. ³ rulers are not a terror to virtue, but to vice. would you then live without any dread of the civil power? do what is right, and you shall have his commendation. ⁴ for his administration is appointed by God for your good. but if you do wrong, you have reason to be afraid; for he bears not the sword in vain: he being the minister of God, to execute punishment upon malefactors. ⁵ wherefore you ought to submit not only from an apprehension of punishment, but ⁶ from a principle of conscience. for this is the reason why you also pay tribute, because under God, they are continually ⁷ attending upon the publick administration. render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, reverence to whom reverence, honour to whom honour.

⁸ Finally, my brethren, whatever has the character of truth, of dignity, of justice, of chastity, whatever can procure you esteem and reputation, in a word, if there be any thing virtuous or praise-worthy, let that be the object of your enquiry.

¹¹ to study your own quiet, to mind your own affairs, and follow some handicraft trade, as we recommended it to you:

¹⁰ entirely obsequious without grumbling. not to pilfer, but to show the strictest fidelity; that they may do honour to the doctrine of God our saviour in all things. ¹¹ For the divine savour has display'd its salutary effects to all mankind: ¹² teaching us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and to practise temperance, justice and piety in this present world; ¹³ in expectation of that desirable happiness, the glorious appearance of the supreme God, and of our saviour Jesus Christ, ¹⁴ who gave himself for us, to redeem us from all iniquity, and qualify us to be his peculiar people, passionately affected to virtue.

¹⁴ seek peace with all men, and sanctity of life, without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁹ and this they were destin'd to. but you are the chosen race, you are kings and priests, the holy nation, the peculiar people, that you might display his glory, who called you out ¹⁰ of darkness into his marvellous light: you, who formerly were not a people, but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy, ¹¹ but at present have obtain'd it. I exhort you, my dear brethren, as strangers and travellers to avoid all sensual passions, as destructive to your ¹² souls. Let your behaviour among the Gentiles be virtuous, that instead of inveighing against you as vicious, they may observe your honest behaviour, ¹³ and glorify God in the times of distress. be subject therefore, for the Lord's sake to every human establishment: whether it be to the king,

³ It is thus his divine power has given us every thing conducive to life and piety, by making us acquainted with him, who has called us by his illustrious power; ⁴ by which we have receiv'd the most inestimable promises, that thereby you might become partakers of the divine perfections, after having escap'd from the corruption of a sensual world. ⁵ Do you on your part employ all your care in adding to your faith, fortitude: to fortitude, knowledge: ⁶ to knowledge, temperance: to temperance, patience: to patience, piety: ⁷ to piety, fraternal affection: and to fraternal affection, universal benevolence.

⁴⁷ and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my saviour,

¹ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to you, that you present your bodies a living victim, holy, acceptable unto God, as the service of a rational being. ² and be not conformed to the present age: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may perceive what God requires of you is good, and acceptable, and perfect.

¹⁸ for he that thus pays his allegiance to Christ, is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

⁹ for the natural effect of light, is universal benevolence, justice, and truth: ¹⁰ consider what is acceptable to the Lord;

¹¹ abounding in good works by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

¹⁸ I have now receiv'd the whole, and have more than sufficient: I am loaded with the presents you sent by Epaphroditus, which I have receiv'd as grateful incense, as a sacrifice which God accepts and approves.

¹⁰ that your conduct may be worthy of the Lord, in every respect agreeable to him, being friutful in every kind of virtue, and increasing in divine knowledge:

¹ Finally, my brethren, we intreat and conjure you by the Lord Jesus Christ, to observe the instructions we gave you about your religious conduct, and to make continual progress therein.

¹ Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ by the appointment of God our saviour, and of Jesus Christ our hope,

⁴ if a widow has children or grand-children, let them above all things instruct their own family to be religious, and let them be grateful to their parents, for this is acceptable to God.

⁹ who has saved us, and by the gospel hath called us to holiness, not in consideration of our works, but in pursuance of his own resolution, and the favour, which having been promised us by Jesus Christ several ages ago,

¹⁶ but don't forget to be beneficent to the community; for such sacrifice is acceptable to God.

⁵ you your selves are as so many living stones, you are the edifice, the spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, agreeable to God by Jesus Christ.

²⁰ from a principle of conscience. what glory is there in suffering corporal punishment for real offences? but if you meet with ill usage for doing your duty, and bear it with constancy,

¹⁹ go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost:

¹⁵ Then he said to them, go ye into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel to all mankind.

⁷⁷ by acquainting his people how they may be saved by the remission of their sins,

²³ the master reply'd, go then to the high-ways and by-paths, and compel them to come in, that my house may be full.

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

¹⁵ that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷ for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

³⁷ all those whom my father gives me, shall come to me; and I will not reject any that come to me.

⁶ Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man can come to the father, but by me.

¹⁷ sanctify them by the truth: thy word is truth.

²⁹ is God the God of the Jews only, and not of the Gentiles? surely he is of the Gentiles too; ³⁰ since it is one God, who will justify both the Jews and the Gentiles, through faith.

¹² In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him. ¹³ "whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved." ¹⁴ But how, say you, shall they call on him on whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? ¹⁵ and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach except they be sent? as it is written, "how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!"

¹⁷ therefore, if any man be a christian, he is in a new creation: the old state of things is chang'd to one entirely new. ¹⁸ Now this is all owing to God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath made us the ministers of this reconciliation; ¹⁹ for it is God that has reconciled the world to himself, by Jesus Christ, by not imputing their sins to them; and hath committed to us the gospel of reconciliation.

¹⁵ the very men who have persecuted the Lord Jesus, and the prophets even to death; who have persecuted us; they who are regardless of pleasing the deity, and are enemies to all mankind; ¹⁶ who by obstructing our endeavours to save the Gentiles, continue to fill up the measure of their enormities; for which consummate vengeance is falling upon them.

¹⁰ for to that end we expose ourselves to trouble and reproach, because we hope in the living God, who is the saviour of all men, especially of believers.

²⁵ with great temper and meekness informing those, who differ in opinion; because he does not know, but God may change their minds, by convincing them of the truth.

⁷ and by lending an assiduous ear to such lessons, render it impossible they should ever be acquainted with the truth.

¹ Paul a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to declare the faith which recommends men to the divine favour, and to convince them of that truth, which leads to piety,

²⁶ for if we wilfully apostatize, after having received the knowledge of the truth, it is as a sin for which there is no sacrifice appointed.

⁹ the Lord does not delay the accomplishment of his promise, as some do imagine. but he waits with patience upon our account, as being unwilling that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

⁶ Then I saw another angel fly in the mid-heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those that dwell on the earth, to every nation, tribe, province, and people, crying with a loud voice,

²³ a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," that is to say, God our Saviour.

²⁹ Jesus answer'd him, the first of all the commandments is thus deliver'd, "hear, o Israel, the lord our God is the only lord. ³⁰ you shall therefore love the lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, to the utmost of your understanding, and all your faculties." this is the first commandment. ³¹ and the second, which has an affinity to it, is this: "you shall love your neighbour as yourself." there is no other commandment greater than these. ³² the Scribe replied, what you have said, master, is very true, there is one God, and no other but he. ³³ and to love him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, with all its faculties, and to love one's neighbour as one's self is more acceptable than all the offerings and sacrifices in the world.

¹⁰ but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world. ¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

¹⁴ The Logos became incarnate, and had his tabernacle among us, being full of grace and truth; and we contemplated his glory, such glory as the Monogenes derived from the father.

³ and this is life eternal, to acknowledge thee to be the only true God, and Jesus to be the Messiah whom thou hast sent.

¹² In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him.

⁴ As to the eating therefore of what is offered in sacrifice to idols, we know that the heathen deities have no real existence, and that there is but one God.

⁶ yet to us there is but one God, the father, from whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

⁴⁵ and so it is written, the first man Adam was made an animating soul, the last Adam was made a vivifying spirit. ⁴⁶ but the spiritual body was not first, but the animal; and afterwards the spiritual. ⁴⁷ the first man was formed from the dust of the earth: the second man was from heaven.

²⁰ now a mediator supposes two parties, of which God is but one.

⁶ one God and father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in all.

⁶ who tho' he was the image of God, did not affect to appear with divine majesty, but divested himself thereof, ⁷ by assuming the form of a servant: being made in the likeness of men, ⁸ and his whole exterior showing nothing more than a meer man, he abased himself, and carried his submission so far as to die, even the death of the cross.

⁶ and this is attested by a certain writer, who says, "what is man that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man that thou visitest him? ⁷ thou hast made him for a while lower than the angels; thou hast crown'd him with glory and honour, and hast set him over the works of thy hands: ⁸ thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet." now since he has put all in subjection to him, he left nothing that is not subjected to him. however we do not see as yet that all things are put under him. ⁹ but Jesus, who was for a while inferior to the angels by his sufferings and death, we see was crown'd with glory and honour; when by the divine goodness, he had pass'd thro' death for every man. ¹⁰ For it was agreeable to his wisdom, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to consecrate the author of their salvation by his sufferings. ¹¹ for both he that sanctifieth, and they who are sanctified, are all deriv'd from one: for which cause he is not asham'd to call them brethren, saying, ¹² "I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee." ¹³ and again, "I will put my trust in him." and again, "behold, I, and the children which God hath given me.

²⁵ so that he has an uninterrupted power to save those, that come to God by him, because he ever lives to make intercession for them.

⁶ Our high priest then has obtained a priesthood so much the more excellent, as he is the mediator of a better alliance, established upon better promises.

¹⁵ and for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that, the transgressions that were unexpiated by the first testament, being expiated by his death, they who are called might receive the eternal inheritance, which was promised.

²⁴ to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the aspersion of that blood which cries for pardon, and not for vengeance as that of Abel.

¹³ and in the midst of the seven candlesticks, one who resembled the son of man, cloathed with a garment down to the foot, and girt below the breast with a girdle of gold.

²⁸ as the son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for all.

⁴⁵ for the son of man himself is not come to receive the services of men, but to do them service, and to lay down his life a ransom for many.

⁵¹ I am the living bread, that is come down from heaven: whosoever shall eat of this bread, shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

¹⁵ (as the father and I are known to one another:) and I lay down my life for them.

⁶ for at the appointed time Christ died for us, when we were in a helpless, sinful state.

²⁶ and by the writings of the prophets (according to the commandment of the eternal God) made known to all the Gentiles, to induce them to obey the faith:

⁶ whereby the testimony we gave concerning Christ was confirmed among you.

¹⁴ to this I am urg'd by the love I bear to Christ, persuaded as I am, that if one died for all, then were all in a dying state: and that he died for all, ¹⁵ that they who are in a state of life should not live at their own discretion, but to the service of him who died for them, and rose again.

²¹ for he hath made him who knew no sin to be a sin-offering for us, that we might be justified by God thro' him.

⁴ God sent forth his own son born of a woman, and subject to the law, to redeem those,

⁷ who has by his blood obtained for us the redemption, even the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of his grace,

⁹ for he has discover'd to us the secret of his will, that out of his meer good pleasure, he had purposed in himself, ¹⁰ when the full time of the dispensation was come, to reduce all things both in heaven and on earth, under one head in Christ.

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, whereby ye may know him:

⁵ which preceeding was not discover'd to men, as now it is to his holy apostles and prophets by the spirit; to wit,

² for Christ loved us, and for us gave himself an offering and a sacrifice acceptable to God.

¹⁰ and come to be glorified by his saints, and to be the object of admiration to all who believed, that the testimony we gave you, would be justified in that day.

¹⁵ whose advent HE will in his own time display, WHO is perfectly happy, who alone is omnipotent, the king of kings, and the lord of all that bear rule;

⁸ be not therefore asham'd of the testimony of the Lord, nor of me who am a prisoner upon his account. but share with me in the afflictions, which attend the gospel, supported as you are by the power of God,

³ and has in due time manifested by the preaching of his word, which is committed to me according to the commandment of God our saviour:

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, to redeem us from all iniquity, and qualify us to be his peculiar people, passionately affected to virtue.

¹² nor with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood he enter'd once for all into the holy of holys, after having obtained for us an eternal redemption.

¹⁸ considering, that it was not by such perishable things as silver or gold, that you were releas'd from those vain rites and customs impos'd upon you by your fathers, ¹⁹ but by the precious blood of Christ, who is the lamb without spot, and without blemish:

²⁴ he himself cancel'd our sins by the crucifixion of his body, that we being set free from sin, might live in the service of virtue. it is by his bruises that you were healed:

¹⁸ for Jesus Christ himself has already suffer'd for our sins, the innocent for the guilty, to bring us to God: who, tho' he died with respect to his body, was rais'd to life by that spirit,

¹ My dear children, these things I write unto you, that ye may avoid sin. but if any man has failed, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the just. ² he is the the victim that has expiated our sins: and not ours only, but likewise the sins of the whole world.

¹⁰ and what heightens his love, was this, that it was not we who first loved God, but it was he that first loved us, and sent his son to expiate our sins.

¹¹ Now what is testified, is this, that God has given to us eternal life: and this life is by his son. ¹² he that receives the son, is intitled to life; and he that does not receive the son of God, has no title to life.

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood,

⁹ and they sung a new song, saying, "thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every tribe, and language, and people, and nation;

³⁵ upon which the Jews said among themselves, whither will he go, that we cannot find him? will he go to the dispersed Jews among the Greeks, and instruct the Greeks?

¹⁵ go, said the Lord to him: for he is the instrument I have chosen, to bear my name to the Gentiles, to kings, and to the children of Israel.

²⁷ when they were arrived, and had assembled the Church, they related what great things God had wrought by them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles:

²¹ but the Lord said to me, "be gone, for I will send you far hence, even to the Gentiles."

¹⁷ by delivering you from this people, and from the Gentiles to whom I now send thee, to open their eyes, ¹⁸ and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and partake of the inheritance of the saints, by believing on me."

²⁰ first I warn'd the people of Damascus, of Jerusalem, of all Judea, and then the Gentiles, to repent, and turn to God, by acting suitably to their repentance.

⁹ for God is my witness, to whom I am entirely devoted, in preaching the gospel of his son, that I constantly make mention of you, in my prayers, requesting,

¹ I call Christ, and the holy spirit to witness with my conscience, that I speak the truth without guile, when I say,

¹⁴ But how, say you, shall they call on him on whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?

¹³ this concerns you Gentiles. for as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I should do honour to my character,

¹⁶ to be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, officiating the gospel of God, that the Gentiles might be made an acceptable offering, being sanctified by the holy spirit.

³¹ the ever-blessed God, and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, knows that I speak truth.

¹⁶ that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not thereupon apply my self to any man;

²⁰ what I write to you, I call God to witness is all true:

⁹ Peter, and John, who were esteemed to be pillars, perceived the favour that was bestowed on me, they admitted me and Barnabas into fellowship, and agreed, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews.

¹⁶ yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in him, and not by the works of the law, by which there is no justification.

⁹ so that it is they who believe, who are blessed with Abraham, who did believe.

⁷ of this I was made a minister, according to the gracious gift God bestowed on me, by the effectual operation of his influence: ⁸ upon me, who am the meanest of all christians, is this favour bestowed, that I should proclaim to the Gentiles the undiscoverable advantages by Christ;

¹¹ with the salutary doctrine of the gospel of immortality, which the blessed God committed to my trust. ¹² I offer thanks to Jesus Christ our Lord, who qualified me for the ministry he has plac'd me in, for having appointed me to such a trust,

¹¹ For this I was establish'd the herald, the apostle, and doctor of the Gentiles. this has drawn upon me the evils I suffer.

⁵ since he did not spare the old world, having preserved only eight persons, including Noah, that preacher of virtue, when he brought the deluge upon the impious world:

²² but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be punish'd by the tribunal: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be punish'd by the Sanhedrim: but whosoever shall say, thou fool, shall be punish'd by the fire of Gehenna. ²³ When therefore you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has reason to be displeas'd with you: ²⁴ leave your gift before the altar, go, and first of all reconcile yourself to your brother; then come to offer your gift.

⁴⁴ but I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who traduce you, and persecute you:

¹² and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

¹⁴ for if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your father forgive your trespasses.

²¹ Jesus answered them, I declare to you, if ye have a full assurance of faith, ye shall not only be able to do this to a fig-tree, but if ye should even say to this mountain, be thou removed, and cast into the sea; it should be done.

²³ for I assuredly tell you, that whoever shall say to this mountain, be removed, and cast into the sea, having no doubt in his mind, but believing what he says shall be effected, what he pronounces shall actually be accomplished. ²⁴ therefore whenever you pray, be fully persuaded of obtaining your request, and I assure you it shall be granted, whatever it be. ²⁵ only when you are dispos'd to prayer, if you have any cause of complaint against any one, forgive him, that your heavenly father may forgive you your offences.

³⁴ and Jesus said, "father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." then they divided his raiment among them by throwing lots,

⁴² then said he to Jesus, Lord, remember me when you enter into your kingdom. ⁴³ Jesus answer'd, verily I tell you, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.

⁵⁰ At length he led them out as far as Bethany; and stretching out his hands, he gave them his benediction.

²¹ Jesus said to her, woman, believe me, the time is coming when it shall be neither on this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem that ye shall worship the father.

²³ but the time is coming, nay, is very nigh, when the true worshippers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth: for they are the worshippers which he requires. ²⁴ God is a spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.

⁶⁰ and on his knees he cried with a loud voice, "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge." and having said this, he expired.

² and was a proselyte, together with all his family: he gave much alms to the people, and was assiduous in his prayers to God.

⁴ and when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, what is it, Lord? and he said to him, thy prayers and thine alms have been observ'd and approv'd by God.

³¹ and said, "Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and God has approved thine alms.

⁵ that time being ended, we departed, being conducted by them in a body with the women and children quite out of the city, where we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed.

⁷ for I wish that all men were as I myself am: but every man hath his proper gift from God, some one way, and some another.

¹⁴ I enjoin therefore the young women to marry, to detest abortion, to govern their families, and give our enemies no handle for reproach.

⁸ This is a secure rule, and what I would have you constantly maintain, that they who have believed in God, should take care to be examples of virtue, for that is commendable and useful to mankind.

²² let us draw near with sincerity, in full assurance of faith, having our consciences purified from guilt, and our bodies washed with pure water.

⁶ but let him be fully persuaded of the lawfulness of what he asks: for he that is diffident about that, is like the waves that fluctuate with the wind. ⁷ such a man must not expect any answer from the Lord. ⁸ a diffident man is inconstant in all his actions.

⁸ address your selves to God, and you will find him present with you: cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, you that are diffident.

⁷ You husbands, do you on your part behave with prudence towards your wives: who being of a more delicate make, ought to be treated with the greater tenderness: and consider they are equally intitled to the evangelical gifts, that your prayers may not be frustrated.

²⁰ for if our conscience condemn us, God knows us better than we do our selves, he knoweth all things. ²¹ beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we may securely confide in God. ²² whatever we ask, we shall receive it of him, because we keep his commandments, and do what is agreeable to him.

²⁸ And as for rayment, why should that give you pain? consider the lillies of the field how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin. ²⁹ and yet I tell you, even Solomon with all his magnificence, was not arrayed like one of these.

⁸ what did ye go to see? a man dress'd in rich apparel? why, they that are so array'd belong to the court:

³ in charity, in patience: the aged women likewise, to behave with sanctity of manners, not false accusers, not given to tipling, ⁴ but to lectures on virtue, that they may teach the young women prudence, to love their husbands, ⁵ to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, good oeconimists, beneficent, submissive to their husbands,

³ let their ornament consist, not in what is external, in curling the hair, in appendages of gold, or finery of dress; ⁴ but in the internal qualities of the mind, in that purity, in that mild and dispassionate temper, which is so acceptable to the divine being. ⁵ the holy religious women of former times were thus adorned, and were submissive to their husbands.

³⁶ At Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha, that is in Greek, Dorcas: this woman was very active in all the offices of benevolence and charity.

³⁹ Peter immediately went with them, and when he was come, they conducted him to the upper chamber: and all the widows advanc'd to him weeping, and shew'd the robes and garments which Dorcas made while she was with them.

¹⁰ for he hath made us a-new, and form'd us by Christ Jesus to do good works, for which God had before prepared us, that we might live in them.

⁶ the widow of pleasure is dead tho' she lives. ⁷ these things recommend to them, that they may be without reproach. ⁸ he that takes no care of his relations, especially those of his own family, has renounc'd the faith and is worse than an infidel. ⁹ Let none be put upon the list of widows, but such as are at least threescore years of age, and have been married but once: ¹⁰ such as have been recommended by their good actions, by the education of their children, by their hospitality, by their officiousness to the faithful, by relieving the afflicted, and by the practice of every virtue.

¹² souls. Let your behaviour among the Gentiles be virtuous, that instead of inveighing against you as vicious, they may observe your honest behaviour,

⁶ to knowledge, temperance: to temperance, patience: to patience, piety: ⁷ to piety, fraternal affection: and to fraternal affection, universal benevolence. ⁸ for if you are possess'd of these virtues and improve therein, they will prevent the knowledge you have of our Lord Jesus Christ from being useless to others, and unprofitable to yourselves.

¹¹ Since then this whole system is to be destroyed, how holy should your conduct be, and how ardent your piety?

¹⁹ your charitable offices, your faith, and your patience, and that your last works exceed the first.

³ but I would have you take notice, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the wife, is the man; and the head of Christ, is God.

³⁴ Let your women be silent in your assemblies: for they are not allowed to discourse there; but are to observe orders, as indeed the law implies: ³⁵ and if they desire to have information about any point, let them consult their husbands at home: for it does not become women to ask questions in the church.

²² let married women be submissive to their husbands, out of regard to the Lord. ²³ for the husband presides over his wife, as Christ presides over the church: and he it is that preserves the whole body. ²⁴ as the church then is subordinate to Christ, so let women be to their husbands upon all occasions.

¹⁸ Dames, be submissive to your husbands, as becomes christians.

⁵ to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, good oeconimists, beneficent, submissive to their husbands,

¹ Let the married women be subservient to their husbands, that if they happen to disbelieve the gospel, they may be gain'd by the instructive conduct of their wives,

⁵ the holy religious women of former times were thus adorned, and were submissive to their husbands. ⁶ such was Sarah, who show'd her obeysance to Abraham, by stiling him her Lord: and you will be stiled her children, if you imitate her conduct, and are not to be terrified out of your virtue.

³⁴ Let your women be silent in your assemblies: for they are not allowed to discourse there; but are to observe orders, as indeed the law implies:

⁸ for the man was not taken from the woman: but the woman from the man. ⁹ nor was the man copied from the woman: but the woman from the man.

³ but I fear lest by some means or other, as Eve was beguiled by the subtilly of the serpent, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is due to Christ.

²¹ and she shall be deliver'd of a son, to whom you shall give the name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. ²² now by these events, that divine prediction of the Prophet had its full accomplishment, when he said, "Behold, ²³ a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," that is to say, God our Saviour. ²⁴ Then Joseph being awak'd out of sleep, did as the angel of the Lord directed, and took his wife home, ²⁵ but did not cohabit with her as a wife, before she had-brought forth her first-born son; whom he named JESUS.

⁷ and being brought to bed of her first born, she swathed him, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

⁴ God sent forth his own son born of a woman, and subject to the law, to redeem those, ⁵ who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

⁵ such a charge will produce that charity, which arises from purity, from a good conscience, and a sincere belief:

¹⁴ but the favour of our Lord display'd itself by that faith and charity, which was wrought in me by Jesus Christ.

⁹ and that the women be decent in their apparel, adorned with modesty and reserve, not with broider'd hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

¹² teaching us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and to practise temperance, justice and piety in this present world;

⁷ The consummation of all things draws nigh. be temperate, be vigilant in prayer.
