¹ Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil:

²¹ then the brother shall betray his brother to death, and the father his child: and children shall rise up against their parents, and be the instruments of their death.

¹⁴ The Pharisees too, who were noted for avarice, heard all this discourse, and treated him with derision.

³¹ fidelity, and natural affection; implacable, and unmerciful:

⁵ don't desert one another, unless you mutually consent to retire for a time, to the solemnity of prayer; and then come together again, lest satan make an attempt upon your continency.

⁹ but if they have not the gift, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to be in pain.

⁸ he therefore that violates these precepts, does not despise man, but God, who has endued me with his holy spirit.

¹¹ their wives must be likewise grave, free from scandal, sober, and always faithful.

⁸ but a lover of hospitality, humane, prudent, just, holy, temperate;

³ in charity, in patience: the aged women likewise, to behave with sanctity of manners, not false accusers, not given to tipling,

⁶ but you, who despise the poor, are not you oppress'd by the rich? is it not they who drag you to their tribunals?

¹⁴ their eyes are inflam'd with adultery, and unextinguishable vice: they insnare the souls of the inconstant. their minds are practis'd in the arts of avarice: an execrable race, who have deserted the right way,

¹⁹ whilst they promise others liberty, they themselves are slaves to their corrupt passions. for he that is vanquished, is a slave to the conqueror.

³ Above all things you are to know, that in these last times, impostors will appear, who will abandon themselves to their own sensual passions, whose cry will be,

¹⁶ These are murmurers, complainers, who pursue their own passions: their language swells with flattery, which they offer to the personages of men from a prospect of gain.

¹⁸ for they assur'd you, there would be impostors in the last days, who would follow their own impious passions.

¹⁵ he had power likewise to animate the image made for the beast, so that the image was made to speak, and as many as would not worship the image were order'd to be killed.

¹⁷ that no body should buy or sell unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

⁶ for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it."

⁶ and I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondred with great admiration.
