¹ I am the genuine vine, and my father is the vintager. ² every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he takes away: as for the branch that bears fruit, he prunes it clean, to make it more fruitful. ³ you are already clean by the instructions I have given you. ⁴ be attach'd to me, and I shall be so to you. as the branch cannot bear fruit of it self, except it be attach'd to the vine: so neither can you, except you continue attach'd to me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for independent of me ye can do nothing. ⁶ if a man abide not in me, he is cast away as withered branches that are gather'd up to be thrown into the fire, where they are burned. ⁷ if ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask what ye will, and you shall obtain it. ⁸ my father will be honour'd by your bearing much fruit, and you will have the honour of being my disciples. ⁹ as the father has loved me, and I have loved you: so do you persevere in your love to me. ¹⁰ your love to me will be in keeping my commandments: even as I love my father by keeping his commandments. ¹¹ These things have I spoken to you, that you might have some present comfort, and that hereafter your joy might be compleat. ¹² this is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you. ¹³ there cannot be greater love than that of a man, who lays down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ you will be my friends, if you do what I have commanded you. ¹⁵ henceforth I do not treat you as servants; for the servant is unacquainted with his master's affairs: but I have treated you as friends; for what I have learnt of my father, I have communicated to you. ¹⁶ it was not you that chose me, but I that chose you, and establish'd you, that your travels may be fruitful, and your fruit be lasting: so that whatever ye shall ask of the father for my sake, he will give it you. ¹⁷ Above all I enjoin you, to love one another. ¹⁸ if the world hate you, consider that it hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹ if you were of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world does hate you. ²⁰ remember what I told you, "the servant is not greater than his master." if they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have been spies upon my discourse, they will be so upon yours. ²¹ but all these things will they do unto you, out of hatred to my name, because they know not him that sent me. ²² if I had not appear'd, and inform'd them, they would have been innocent: but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ he that hateth me, hateth my father also. ²⁴ if I had not done among them such works as no other ever did, they had been innocent: but though they have seen them, yet they hate both me and my father. ²⁵ so that the passage is fulfilled that is written in their law, "they hated me without a cause." ²⁶ but when the advocate is come, whom I will send to you from the father, even the spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the father, he shall testify of me. ²⁷ and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

¹ For the kingdom of the Messiah is like a family, the master whereof went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard.

³³ Hear another parable: a certain landlord planted a vineyard, hedged it round, set up a wine-press in it, and built a tower, then lett it out to tenants, and went into a foreign country.

¹ Then Jesus address'd himself to them in this parabolical manner. a certain person planted a vineyard, made a fence about it, clear'd the way for a wine-press, built a tower, and committed it to the care of vine-dressers, while he was travelling abroad.

⁶ He proposed likewise this parable: a certain man had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, and he came expecting it should have had fruit, but he found none.

⁹ HE was the true Light who came into the world, to enlighten every man.

¹⁷ the law indeed was delivered by Moses, but grace and truth was the dispensation of Jesus Christ.

³² Jesus answer'd, I assure you, Moses did not give you the celestial bread; but my father gives you the true celestial bread.

⁵⁵ for my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

⁹ For we are fellow labourers employed by God: you are his field, and his mansion.

⁸ however, it is really, in effect, a new commandment I write unto you, with respect to you: because the darkness is past, and things now appear in their true light.

¹⁰ the ax is already laid to the root of the trees: every tree then which does not produce good fruit, will be hewn down, and cast into the fire.

¹² and with the fan in his hand, he will throughly cleanse his floor, and gather the wheat into his grainery, but the chaff will he burn with unquenchable fire."

¹² for to him that uses what he has, shall be given, and he shall have abundantly: but from him that uses it not, shall be taken away, even what he hath.

³³ Another of his parables was this; the gospel-state is like unto leaven, which a woman took and mixt with three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

¹³ but he answered, every plantation which my heavenly father hath not planted shall be rooted up.

¹⁹ when seeing a fig-tree by the way, he came to it, and finding nothing thereon, but bare leaves, said to it, may you never more bear fruit. and presently the fig-tree withered away.

¹³ by the stony ground is understood such persons as receive indeed the doctrines they hear, with joy: but for want of resolution, believe only occasionally, and desert when the trial comes.

⁷ then he said to the vine-dresser, you see, I have been looking these three years for fruit from this fig-tree, but find none: hew it down, why should it cumber my ground? ⁸ to which he made answer, sir, let it alone one year longer, till I shall dig about it, and dung it. ⁹ perhaps it may bear fruit: if not, you may after that hew it down.

⁸ my father will be honour'd by your bearing much fruit, and you will have the honour of being my disciples.

¹⁶ it was not you that chose me, but I that chose you, and establish'd you, that your travels may be fruitful, and your fruit be lasting: so that whatever ye shall ask of the father for my sake, he will give it you.

¹² by your authority I have kept them, during my being with them in the world: those that you gave me I have kept, and not one of them is lost, except the son of perdition: according as the scripture foretold.

³ and not only so, but we triumph in tribulation also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, probation; ⁴ and probation, hope: ⁵ now hope will not deceive us, because the love of God is diffused thro' our hearts, by the holy spirit which is given to us;

²⁸ We know too, that all things co-operate for the good of those who love God, who, pursuant to his purpose, has now called them:

¹ For tho' I should speak with the eloquence of men, and of angels, and not have social affection, I should be like sounding brass, or a noisy cymbal.

¹⁷ for the light affliction, which I at present suffer, will be infinitely over-ballanced by an eternal weight of glory; ¹⁸ for I have no regard to the things which are visible, but to such as are invisible: since visible things are temporary, but the invisible are eternal.

²² but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, sweetness of disposition, beneficence, faithfulness, meekness, temperance: ²³ against such there is no law.

⁹ and the favour I ask of him is this, that your kindness to me may be crown'd with farther improvements in knowledge and all prudence; ¹⁰ that being capable to distinguish what is best, you may remain stedfastly sincere until the day of Christ, ¹¹ abounding in good works by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

⁵ for the sake of that happiness, which you hope for, and is reserv'd for you in heaven, of which you have already been inform'd by the preaching of the truth, that is, the gospel: ⁶ which is not only come to you, but to all the world; where it produces its effects, and increases, as it does also among you, ever since you sincerely embrac'd the divine favour, ⁷ which you heard was offer'd to you, by the instructions of Epaphras, our dear fellow-servant, who is to you a faithful minister of Christ: ⁸ who also declared to us the love you bear to us upon a spiritual account. ⁹ For this cause, ever since we heard of it, we incessantly pray for you, requesting that you may be endued with respect to the knowledge of his will, with all wisdom and spiritual discernment: ¹⁰ that your conduct may be worthy of the Lord, in every respect agreeable to him, being friutful in every kind of virtue, and increasing in divine knowledge:

²³ Now may the God of peace make you intirely holy: may every part of you, your spirit, soul, and body be preserved irreprovable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. ²⁴ he that has called you, is faithful, and this he will effect.

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, to redeem us from all iniquity, and qualify us to be his peculiar people, passionately affected to virtue.

⁷ for the earth which drinks up the frequent show'rs that fall upon it, and produces plants fit for the use of him that cultivates it, is stiled heavenly land: ⁸ but that which bears thorns and briars, is look'd upon as lying under a curse; whose end will be to be burnt.

¹⁰ their discipline was temporary, and the effect of humour; whereas God chastises us for our advantage, to make us partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ 'tis true, all correction at first is far from appearing agreeable, yet afterward it produces the agreeable fruits of virtue in those who are exercised thereby.

¹⁵ take care not to deprive yourselves of the divine favour: and that no poisonous root spring up, and spread a general infection among you.

¹⁹ they went out from us, but they were not of us: for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that it might be manifest, that they were not all of us.

¹⁹ as many as I love, I rebuke and chastise: be warm therefore with zeal, and repent.

¹⁰ Jesus said to him, he that comes out from bathing has occasion only to wash his feet, the rest of his body being clean: so you are clean, but not every one of you.

¹⁷ sanctify them by the truth: thy word is truth.

²⁶ to sanctify and purify her by the ablution of his word,

²² You that have purified your souls by the holy spirit, in obeying the gospel, which obliges you to an undisguised benevolence, let your hearts be mutually affected with the most disinterested ardour;

¹⁵ but by the good ground is meant such persons as have received the doctrine with simplicity and sincerity, abide by it, and practise it with perseverance.

⁵⁶ he that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

⁶⁸ but Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life. ⁶⁹ and we have believed and we have acknowledged that you are the Christ, the son of God.

³¹ Jesus said therefore to those Jews who believed on him, if you adhere to my doctrine, then will you be my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth,

²⁰ then shall you know, that I am in my father, and you in me, and I in you.

⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for independent of me ye can do nothing. ⁶ if a man abide not in me, he is cast away as withered branches that are gather'd up to be thrown into the fire, where they are burned. ⁷ if ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask what ye will, and you shall obtain it.

²³ I in them, and thou in me, that they may have a perfect union, and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

²³ who upon his arrival there, was glad to see such effects of the divine grace, and exhorted them all to remain firmly attach'd to the christian profession:

²² encouraging the disciples, exhorting them to persevere in the faith, representing that it is thro' much tribulation that we must enter into the kingdom of God.

⁹ you are not in such a state, but in a spiritual one, provided the divine spirit dwell in you. now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his. ¹⁰ and if Christ be in you, tho' the body is mortal in consequence of sin; the spirit gives life by justification.

⁸ I besought the Lord thrice, to make him leave me. ⁹ but he said to me, "my favour is sufficient for thee: for my strength is shown to be perfect by thy weakness." with pleasure therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may be seen to dwell in me. ¹⁰ I take pleasure then in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am afflicted, then it is I have fortitude.

⁵ Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; bring yourselves to the proof; are you so little acquainted with yourselves, as not to know whether Jesus Christ be in you? but if you are destitute of proofs,

²⁰ I am crucified with Christ, it is not I that now live, but Christ that liveth in me; the life I have in this body I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

¹⁷ so that your souls may be possess'd with faith in Christ.

¹¹ abounding in good works by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

²³ provided you continue well-grounded and settled in the faith, and do not abandon that hope which has been offer'd to you by the gospel, and is proclaim'd to all mankind; of which I Paul am made a minister.

²⁷ to whom God does disclose the glorious advantages of this mystery to you Gentiles, to wit, "that by Christ you may have the expectation of glory."

⁶ continue therefore to follow the doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ, as you have receiv'd it:

⁵ not being able therefore to wait any longer, I sent Timothy to know the state of your faith, for fear the tempter should have seduc'd you, and all our labour have prov'd abortive.

³⁹ as for us, we are not such as desert to their own destruction; but such as persevere in the faith, to the saving of our souls.

⁶ he that says he is attach'd to Christ, ought to regulate his conduct by his example.

²⁴ adhere therefore to what ye have learnt from the beginning. if you adhere to what ye have heard from the beginning, you will still persist to own both the son and the father. ²⁵ and this is the reward that he hath promised us, even eternal life. ²⁶ These things have I written to you concerning those that would seduce you. ²⁷ but as the unction which ye have received from him, abides in you, you don't need any instruction: being then fully instructed by his unction, which is true and not fallacious, adhere to what that has taught you. ²⁸ adhere to that, my dear children, that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

⁹ no renegado that deserts the doctrine of Christ, has any interest in the deity: he that adheres to the doctrine of Christ, has an interest both in the father, and in the son.

²⁰ but you, my brethren, improve yourselves in your most holy faith, present your addresses by the holy spirit, ²¹ and thereby cultivate the divine favour, in the expectation of eternal life by the mercy of Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁶ He proposed likewise this parable: a certain man had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, and he came expecting it should have had fruit, but he found none.

¹⁹ upon which Jesus said to them, verily, verily I say unto you, the son can do nothing of himself, except he sees the father do it: for whatever he doth, that the son does likewise.

³³ if this man had not his mission from God, he could do nothing.

²⁴ verily, verily I say unto you, when a corn of wheat is thrown into the ground, there it lies a single grain unless it dies: but if it die, it becomes very fruitful.

¹² salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved.

²² but now being set free from sin, and actually in the service of God, the present advantage you reap is holiness, and the future everlasting life.

⁴ thus, my brethren, the law is become dead with respect to you by the body of Christ; that you might be subject to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

⁵ so we who are many, make all but one body in Christ, and every member subservient to one another.

¹⁶ the cup of benediction which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

¹² For as the body is one, tho' it has many members, and all the members of that one body, tho' many, are one body: so also is the body of Christ.

²⁷ Thus you are the body of Christ, being the particular members of it.

¹⁰ now he that furnishes seed to the sower, and bread for food, shall furnish and multiply what you sow, and increase the fruits of your liberality.

⁸ for I can employ no power against the truth, but for the truth.

²² but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, sweetness of disposition, beneficence, faithfulness, meekness, temperance:

⁹ for the natural effect of light, is universal benevolence, justice, and truth:

¹³ to these things I am equal, thro' Christ who strengthens me.

¹⁷ not that I desire a present; but what I desire is, that the fruits of your liberality may greatly redound to your own account.

⁶ which is not only come to you, but to all the world; where it produces its effects, and increases, as it does also among you, ever since you sincerely embrac'd the divine favour,

¹⁰ that your conduct may be worthy of the Lord, in every respect agreeable to him, being friutful in every kind of virtue, and increasing in divine knowledge:

¹⁷ every thing that is valuable, every gift that leads to perfection is deriv'd from heaven, it descends from that original light, which knows no change, no shadow, or decline:

⁴ which however rejected it is by men, is the precious stone, which God has chosen: and

² may the divine favour and felicity be poured upon you, by the knowledge of God, and of our Lord Jesus Christ. ³ It is thus his divine power has given us every thing conducive to life and piety, by making us acquainted with him, who has called us by his illustrious power; ⁴ by which we have receiv'd the most inestimable promises, that thereby you might become partakers of the divine perfections, after having escap'd from the corruption of a sensual world. ⁵ Do you on your part employ all your care in adding to your faith, fortitude: to fortitude, knowledge: ⁶ to knowledge, temperance: to temperance, patience: to patience, piety: ⁷ to piety, fraternal affection: and to fraternal affection, universal benevolence. ⁸ for if you are possess'd of these virtues and improve therein, they will prevent the knowledge you have of our Lord Jesus Christ from being useless to others, and unprofitable to yourselves. ⁹ but he that is destitute of them is blind or short-sighted, having forgot he was purified from his past sins. ¹⁰ Wherefore be the more diligent, my brethren, to secure your vocation and election by your virtuous actions, for by so doing, you will never relapse: ¹¹ and thus you will have a free admittance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. ¹² for this reason I shall never omit to put you in mind of these things, however knowing you are already, and settled in the truth. ¹³ whilst I am alive, I think it my duty to awaken you by my admonitions: ¹⁴ knowing that I must soon leave this tabernacle, as our Lord Jesus Christ has signify'd to me. ¹⁵ However, I shall inculcate these things so as to make you continually remember them, even after my departure. ¹⁶ for, the information we gave you of the powerful advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, did not proceed from any artfully contriv'd fables, we our selves having been spectators of his majesty. ¹⁷ for he received this honourable and glorious testimony from his father, when the voice broke out from the magnificent splendor, in these words, "this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased." ¹⁸ we our selves heard this voice, that came from heaven, when we were with him upon the holy mountain.

¹⁸ on the contrary, may you increase in the favour, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! to him be glory both now and for ever. AMEN.

¹⁹ every tree that doth not yield good fruit, is hewn down and cast into the fire.

⁴¹ the son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all that make others offend, and those who do iniquity;

⁵ then throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and went and hanged himself.

²⁷ and nothing is to be expected but that dreadful judgment, and fiery indignation, which shall devour all such adversaries.

²⁰ As for those who have renounc'd the pollutions of the world, by their owning Jesus Christ for their Lord and saviour, if they are prevail'd upon to be entangled therein again, their last state is worse than the first.

¹² they are a disgrace to your love-feasts, they indulge themselves at your festivals without reserve: clouds without water, transported with every wind: trees whose fruit soon withers and is useless, twice dead and rooted up: ¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame: wandering lights, to whom is reserv'd the thickest darkness for ever.

¹⁵ and whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

⁸ but the fearful, and incredulous, the abominable, the murderer, the licentious, the poisoner, the idolater, and every lyar shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: this is the second death."

⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and ye shall find: knock, and the door shall be opened.

³⁷ I know you are Abraham's offspring; but ye seek to kill me, because my doctrine doth not penetrate into you.

¹³ and if in my name ye shall ask any thing of the father, whereby he may be glorified by the son, I will effect it.

²³ tho' then you cannot ask any thing of me in person, whatever ye shall ask the father in my name, I assure you he will grant it.

² being under tutors and guardians, 'till the time prefix'd by his father.

¹⁶ I say then, conduct yourselves by the spirit, and you will not then gratify the animal passions.

¹⁶ Let the christian doctrine be the familiar subject of your entertainment: in all wisdom instructing and exhorting one another, in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, melodiously tuning your grateful praises to God.

¹⁴ I write to you, fathers, because you have known him that is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked spirit.

²⁷ but as the unction which ye have received from him, abides in you, you don't need any instruction: being then fully instructed by his unction, which is true and not fallacious, adhere to what that has taught you.

²² whatever we ask, we shall receive it of him, because we keep his commandments, and do what is agreeable to him.

¹⁴ Besides, we have this confidence in him, that if we ask any thing according to his will, he will hear us.

¹ The PRESBYTER to the lady ECLECTA and her children, whom I sincerely love, and not only I, but all true christians, ² in consideration of the true doctrine, we all profess, and in which we shall for ever persevere.

¹⁶ even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father who is in heaven.

⁴⁴ but I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who traduce you, and persecute you:

³⁵ but as for you, love your enemies, do good, and lend without expecting any advantage from it: so shall your reward be great, in acting like the children of the most high: for he is kind to the most ungrateful wretches.

³⁵ by this mutual love shall all men know that you are my disciples.

²⁰ for you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

³¹ whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God.

¹⁰ now he that furnishes seed to the sower, and bread for food, shall furnish and multiply what you sow, and increase the fruits of your liberality. ¹¹ so that being enriched in every thing, you may be continually beneficent to the glory of God by our thanksgiving. ¹² for the execution of this charitable office, does not only supply the necessities of the converts, but by the thanksgivings of many redounds also to the glory of God. ¹³ having this proof of you by such a supply, they will glorify God for your profess'd subjection to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution to them as well as others; ¹⁴ and you will have the advantage of their earnest prayers, for the exceeding favour God has bestowed upon them by you: ¹⁵ thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

⁵ to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, good oeconimists, beneficent, submissive to their husbands,

¹⁰ entirely obsequious without grumbling. not to pilfer, but to show the strictest fidelity; that they may do honour to the doctrine of God our saviour in all things.

¹² souls. Let your behaviour among the Gentiles be virtuous, that instead of inveighing against you as vicious, they may observe your honest behaviour,

¹¹ let a speaker deliver nothing but what is agreeable to the divine oracles: and let him that attends the poor, be active in proportion to the strength God has given him. amen.

¹¹ These things have I spoken to you, that you might have some present comfort, and that hereafter your joy might be compleat.

¹³ there cannot be greater love than that of a man, who lays down his life for his friends.

²³ I in them, and thou in me, that they may have a perfect union, and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. ²⁴ father, I desire that they also whom thou hast given me, may be with me where I am going; that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me: for thou didst love me before the foundation of the world; yet,

¹⁸ Be ye rooted and grounded in social virtue, that you may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of this mystery:

²⁸ adhere to that, my dear children, that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

²⁰ but you, my brethren, improve yourselves in your most holy faith, present your addresses by the holy spirit,

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood,

¹⁵ and Jesus answer'd, Let it be so for the present, for it becometh us to do whatever is right. then John consented. ¹⁶ and when Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water: and immediately the heavens seem'd to be parted asunder before him, and he saw the Spirit ¹⁷ of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: at the same time a voice was heard from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

³⁴ Jesus said to them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

²⁹ he that sent me, is with me: the father hath not left me alone, for I always do what is agreeable to him.

⁴⁹ for I have not spoken for my self; but the father who sent me, he commission'd me, what I should teach, and what I should speak.

¹⁵ if ye love me, keep my commandments.

²¹ he that hath received my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me, shall be beloved by my father, and I will love him, and shew my self unto him.

³¹ not that he has any thing against me, but that the world may know that I love the father, by my executing the commands which my father gave me: arise, let us go hence.

⁴ I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

¹⁹ circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, in comparison of obeying the divine commands.

¹ Finally, my brethren, we intreat and conjure you by the Lord Jesus Christ, to observe the instructions we gave you about your religious conduct, and to make continual progress therein.

²⁶ and indeed we wanted an high priest of such a character, one that is holy, innocent, undefiled, one that is separated from sinful men, and exalted above the heavens; one who was under no necessity,

⁵ wherefore at his appearing in publick, he saith, "sacrifice and offering thou wouldst not, but a body hast thou prepared me: ⁶ in burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure: ⁷ then said I, lo I come, as in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do thy will, O God." ⁸ after having said, "victims, oblations, holocausts, and sacrifice for sin, thou wouldst not, neither hadst pleasure therein," tho' they are all prescrib'd by the law; ⁹ he immediately adds, "lo, I come to do thy WILL, O God." he abolishes the first to establish the second: ¹⁰ in consequence of which WILL we are sanctified by the oblation which Jesus Christ has made once for all of his own body.

²¹ for it had been better for them, not to have made any profession of the gospel, than after they have embraced it, to abandon the holy injunction, that was delivered to them.

¹ My dear children, these things I write unto you, that ye may avoid sin. but if any man has failed, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the just. ² he is the the victim that has expiated our sins: and not ours only, but likewise the sins of the whole world.

⁵ but he that observes his precepts, loves God with a true and perfect love: 'tis by this we know that we are truly christians.

²¹ beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we may securely confide in God. ²² whatever we ask, we shall receive it of him, because we keep his commandments, and do what is agreeable to him. ²³ now this is his commandment, that we believe in his son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, as he commanded us. ²⁴ he that observes his commandments, dwelleth in God, and God in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the spirit which he hath given us.

³ for our love of God consists in the observation of his precepts: precepts that are far from being grievous.

¹⁴ blessed are they who wash their robes, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

⁵ and when he hath found it, joyfully lay it upon his shoulders?

⁹ and when 'tis found, will she not call her friends aud neighbours together, and say, rejoice with me, for I have found the piece, I had lost?

²³ take the fatted calf, and kill it: let us eat and be merry:

³² but it was necessary to feast and rejoice, because your brother here was dead, and is again alive: he was lost and is now found.

²⁹ the bridegroom is he that hath a right to the bride: as for the friend of the bridegroom, who is nigh his person and heareth him, he greatly rejoyces at the voice of the bridegroom: upon this account my joy is compleat.

²⁴ hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be compleat.

³³ these things I have appriz'd you of, that ye might repose your confidence in me. the world shall give you trouble: but take courage, I have overcome the world.

¹³ now that I am coming to thee, while I am here, I make these requests for them, that their joy in me may be compleat.

¹³ Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope through the power of the holy spirit.

²⁴ not that I would arbitrarily prescribe what you should believe, but rather encourage you to go on: for 'tis by faith you have stood.

¹⁸ do not drink to excess, for that tends to dissoluteness, but be regal'd with spiritual entertainments:

²⁵ which consideration persuades me that I shall abide, and even continue some time with you all, to improve your advancement in the faith, and to promote your joy:

¹⁶ be always chearful.

⁸ whom though you have not seen, you love: and though he is not now the object of your view, yet you believe in him, and triumph with such a laudable transport, as cannot be express'd:

⁴ and these things write we unto you, that our joy may be perfect.

¹² I had many things to write to you, but I don't think it proper to commit them to paper and ink, because I hope to make you a visit, and deliver them by word of mouth; that so our joy may be compleat.

³⁴ a new commandment I give unto you, "that ye love one another; that you would have the same love for one another as I have had for you."

¹⁰ in brotherly kindness be passionately affected to one another; in honour prefer one another:

² for Christ loved us, and for us gave himself an offering and a sacrifice acceptable to God.

¹² may the Lord make you increase and abound in mutual love, in love towards all men, as we do towards you:

⁹ As to brotherly love, I have no occasion to write about it, God himself having instructed you to love one another.

³ We are oblig'd, my brethren, to render thanks to God continually upon your account, as it is but just; since your faith still improves, and your mutual love is always increasing.

⁸ In a word, live all of you in perfect agreement and sympathy, be full of fraternal love, compassion, and affability.

⁸ but above all, let your mutual benevolence be intense, for benevolence cancels a multitude of offences.

⁷ My brethren, I don't prescribe you any new commandment, but the antient precept which you had from the beginning: and that is no other than the word which was originally delivered. ⁸ however, it is really, in effect, a new commandment I write unto you, with respect to you: because the darkness is past, and things now appear in their true light. ⁹ he that says, he is in the light, and yet hates his brother, is still in darkness. ¹⁰ he that loves his brother, abides in the light, and will be secure from stumbling.

¹¹ for this is the doctrine that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. ¹² not acting like Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother: but why did he slay him? because his own actions were evil, and his brother's were virtuous. ¹³ Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. ¹⁴ as for us, we know, that we have passed from a state of death to that of life, because we love our brethren: he that does not love his brother, is in a destructive state. ¹⁵ whosoever hateth his brother, has the disposition of a murderer: and you know that no murderer has any title to eternal life. ¹⁶ this is the proof of the divine love, Christ expos'd his life for us: and we ought to expose our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ he that possesses the enjoyments of life, and seeing his brother in want, has no compassion for him, how can he be said to have any divine love? ¹⁸ my dear children, let not our love be only in the language of our lips, but in the real effects of the heart.

²³ now this is his commandment, that we believe in his son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, as he commanded us.

²¹ besides, 'tis a commandment we have receiv'd from him, that he who would love God, must love his brother also.

¹¹ I am the true pastor: the true pastor exposes his life for the sheep.

¹⁵ (as the father and I are known to one another:) and I lay down my life for them.

⁶ for at the appointed time Christ died for us, when we were in a helpless, sinful state. ⁷ now for a wicked man no one would willingly die; but for a benefactor some have readily offer'd to die. ⁸ but herein hath God displayed his love towards us, in that Christ died for us, even while we were yet sinners.

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth, is born of God, and knoweth God. ⁸ he that has not social affection, does not know God; for God is love. ⁹ by this was the love of God displayed towards us, in that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live thro' him. ¹⁰ and what heightens his love, was this, that it was not we who first loved God, but it was he that first loved us, and sent his son to expiate our sins. ¹¹ beloved, if God so loved us, we ought to love one another.

⁵⁰ for whosoever shall do the will of my father, who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.

⁴ As for you, my friends, be not afraid of those, who can kill the body, and after that can effect nothing more.

⁵ upon which his mother bid the servants do whatever he should order.

¹⁷ if ye comprehend these things, happy are ye if ye put them in practice.

²⁸ ye have heard me say, "I am going away, and shall come again unto you." if ye loved me, ye would rejoice at my going to the father: for the father is greater than I.

²³ it was then, that those words of scripture were accomplished, "Abraham believed God, and he was regarded for it as a man of virtue, and was the favourite of God."

¹¹ to whom he answered, because you are allowed to know the mysteries of the gospel-dispensation, but to them it is not allowed.

²³ then addressing himself to his disciples in particular, he said, happy are they, who see what you see:

¹⁹ the woman said to him, sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

²⁶ I have many things to say against you: but I only say He that sent me is worthy of belief; and what I have heard of Him, that only I publish to the world.

²⁶ if any man would serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my servant be: whoever serves me, him will my father reward.

¹⁶ I declare unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him.

²⁰ remember what I told you, "the servant is not greater than his master." if they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have been spies upon my discourse, they will be so upon yours.

⁶ I have displayed thy name among those whom you have chosen out of the world for me: thine they were, and you gave them me; and they have kept thy word. ⁷ now they believe that the instructions you gave me came from thee. ⁸ for I have given to them the instructions which you gave me; and they have received them; and have sincerely believ'd that I came from thee, and are persuaded that thou didst send me.

¹⁷ that is to say, master! Jesus said to her, touch me not: for I am not yet ascended to my father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, "I ascend unto my father and your father, even my God and your God."

²⁷ for I have acquainted you with the whole dispensation of God without reserve.

²⁵ Now to him that is able to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, conformable to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret from antient times, but now is laid open, ²⁶ and by the writings of the prophets (according to the commandment of the eternal God) made known to all the Gentiles, to induce them to obey the faith:

⁹ but, as it is written, "eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entred into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." ¹⁰ this is what God has revealed to us by his spirit: for the spirit penetrates into all things, even the profound counsels of God. ¹¹ for who knows the thoughts of a man, but the spirit of man which is in him? even so the thoughts of God no one can know, but the spirit of God. ¹² now the spirit which we have received, is not the spirit of this world, but that which comes from God; that we might know what he has graciously bestowed upon us.

⁶ and because ye are sons, God has sent forth the spirit of his son into your hearts, crying Abba, that is, father;

⁹ for he has discover'd to us the secret of his will, that out of his meer good pleasure, he had purposed in himself,

⁵ which preceeding was not discover'd to men, as now it is to his holy apostles and prophets by the spirit; to wit,

²⁶ that mystery, which has been hid from ages and generations, but is now made manifest to his saints:

¹⁶ not as a slave, but in another quality, as a dear brother whom I particularly value, but much more should you, both as he is your servant, and as he is a christian.

¹ James a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the TWELVE TRIBES dispers'd thro' the world, sends greeting.

¹¹ when the spirit of Christ inform'd the minds of the prophets of his future sufferings, and of the glorious consequences, they were solicitous to know the circumstances of the times pointed at:

¹ Simon Peter the servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who equally share with us in the advantages of faith, thro' the veracity of our God, and of Jesus Christ.

¹ Jude the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those that are sanctified by God the father, and by their vocation are reserved for Jesus Christ.

¹ The REVELATION of Jesus Christ, which God gave him, to shew to his servants things which must shortly come to pass; this he signified by his angel whom he dispatch'd to his servant John:

²² and whatever ye shall ask in prayer, with faith, ye shall receive.

¹⁸ and Jesus came, and said to them, all power has been given me in heaven and in earth. ¹⁹ go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost:

¹⁵ Then he said to them, go ye into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel to all mankind. ¹⁶ he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned.

¹³ when it was day, he called his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom he stiled missionarys: Simon,

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ you are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹ and I am going to send you what my father has promis'd you. but continue in the city of Jerusalem, until you shall be endued with power from on high.

⁷⁰ Jesus answered them, have I not chosen you all twelve, and yet one of you is an avowed enemy?

¹⁸ I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me."

¹³ and if in my name ye shall ask any thing of the father, whereby he may be glorified by the son, I will effect it. ¹⁴ when ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

⁷ if ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask what ye will, and you shall obtain it. ⁸ my father will be honour'd by your bearing much fruit, and you will have the honour of being my disciples.

¹⁹ if you were of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world does hate you.

²³ tho' then you cannot ask any thing of me in person, whatever ye shall ask the father in my name, I assure you he will grant it. ²⁴ hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be compleat.

²¹ then said Jesus to them again, "peace be with you: as my father hath sent me, even so send I you." ²² and when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "receive ye the holy spirit. ²³ whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye leave unpardoned, they are lest unpardoned."

¹⁵ So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me more than these do? yes, Lord, said he, you know that I love you. Jesus reply'd, feed my lambs. ¹⁶ then he ask'd him the second time, Simon son of Jonas do you love me? yes, Lord, said he; you know that I love you. Jesus reply'd, feed my sheep. ¹⁷ Jesus said to him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved at his asking him the third time, "do you love me?" and he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

⁸ but ye shall receive the influence of the holy spirit, which will descend upon you: and ye shall be witnesses for me, in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

²⁴ saying, "thou Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show us which of these two thou hast chosen,

¹⁵ go, said the Lord to him: for he is the instrument I have chosen, to bear my name to the Gentiles, to kings, and to the children of Israel.

⁴¹ not to all the people, but to those witnesses, which God had before chosen: to us, I say, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

²⁵ and now I am persuaded you will none of you see my face any more: whilst I have been among you, I have proclaim'd the kingdom of the Messias: ²⁶ I therefore declare to you at this present time, that I am not responsible for the ruin of any: ²⁷ for I have acquainted you with the whole dispensation of God without reserve. ²⁸ be therefore upon your guard to secure your selves, and the whole flock over which the holy spirit has made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he has purchased with his own blood.

¹⁴ then he said, the God of our fathers has singled you out to be acquainted with his will, to see the just one, and to hear the words of his mouth:

⁵ by whose favour I have received the office of an apostle to bring the Gentiles every where to the obedience of faith preached in his name:

¹³ now I would not have you ignorant, my brethren, that I often purposed to come to you, tho' I have been hindered hitherto, that I might be useful among you as well as among other Gentiles.

¹¹ for before they were born, and had done neither good or evil, that the distinction which God had purposed to make might appear to be, not in consideration of their actions, but of his own free call, ¹² it was said to her, "the elder shall serve the younger." ¹³ as it is written, "Jacob have I loved, but Esau I have discarded." ¹⁴ What do we say then? is there injustice in God? ¹⁵ God forbid. for he saith to Moses, "I will show favour to whom I will show favour, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." ¹⁶ so that this is a matter not dependent on him that wills or runs, but on God, who shews mercy.

²¹ is not the potter the master of his own clay, of the same mass to make one vessel for use and ornament, and another for a meaner purpose?

⁴ now whatever was heretofore writ, was writ for our instruction; that we through patience and the comfortable promises of the scriptures might have hope.

¹⁵ nevertheless, brethren, I have writ to the Gentile part of you, and admonish'd you with the greater freedom by virtue of the commission that God has given me, ¹⁶ to be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, officiating the gospel of God, that the Gentiles might be made an acceptable offering, being sanctified by the holy spirit. ¹⁷ I have therefore matter of glorying thro' Jesus Christ, with respect to divine service. ¹⁸ for I will not offer to mention any thing, but what Christ has wrought by me, to make the Gentiles christians, both in profession and practice: ¹⁹ by virtue of the miracles and prodigies wrought by the power of the divine spirit; so that from Jerusalem, and the neighbouring country, quite to Illyricum,

⁶ I have planted, Apollos watered: but God gave the increase. ⁷ so then, neither is he that planted any thing, nor he that watered: it is God only that gives the increase.

¹⁶ for in barely preaching the gospel, I have nothing to glory in: because I am under an obligation to do it; yea, wo is unto me if I preach not the gospel. ¹⁷ now if I do this willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, it is a dispensation of trust which must be discharged. ¹⁸ whence then is my reward? why, from my preaching the gospel of Christ gratis, without making use of the privilege which the gospel gives me.

¹¹ All these things happened to them for examples: and are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

¹⁵ but when it pleased God, who ordained me from my birth, and called me by his especial favour, to reveal his son to me,

¹⁰ for he hath made us a-new, and form'd us by Christ Jesus to do good works, for which God had before prepared us, that we might live in them.

⁷ for this I was establish'd a herald and an apostle, I speak the truth without disguise, a doctor to instruct the Gentiles in the true faith.

¹¹ For this I was establish'd the herald, the apostle, and doctor of the Gentiles. this has drawn upon me the evils I suffer.

² and what you heard me deliver in the presence of many, intrust to such persons of integrity as are qualified to instruct others

¹⁵ and that from your infancy you were acquainted with the sacred writings, which point you the way to salvation, by believing in Christ Jesus: ¹⁶ for all divinely inspired writings are conducive to instruction, to conviction, to reformation, and the practice of virtue; ¹⁷ that the minister of God may be perfectly accomplished for every office of religion.

⁵ I left you in Crete, to regulate what was amiss, and to ordain pastors in every city, as I had appointed you,

⁴ 'Twas by faith that Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he was declared righteous, God himself having testified that he accepted his offering, and after he died for his faith, he was not silent.

¹⁸ they who cultivate peace, enjoy the reward of their virtue.

¹⁴ as obedient children be no longer influenc'd by those passions, which were the effects of your former ignorance. ¹⁵ but as he, who has called you, is holy: let your whole conduct be an imitation of his holiness. ¹⁶ for it is written, "be ye holy, because I am holy." ¹⁷ and since you invoke him as your father, who without respect of persons judges every one according to his actions; while you are passing thro' this world, be fearful of offending him: ¹⁸ considering, that it was not by such perishable things as silver or gold, that you were releas'd from those vain rites and customs impos'd upon you by your fathers, ¹⁹ but by the precious blood of Christ, who is the lamb without spot, and without blemish: ²⁰ who was destin'd before the creation of the world, tho' 'tis of late only that he has appear'd, upon your account: ²¹ it is by him that you believe in God, who has raised him from the dead, and invested him with glory, that your faith and your hope might be in God.

² by observing the religious chastity of their manners.

¹⁵ adore the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready to show with modesty and respect to every one that asks it, what ground there is for the expectations you have:

¹⁰ and what heightens his love, was this, that it was not we who first loved God, but it was he that first loved us, and sent his son to expiate our sins.

¹⁹ let us love him; since he first loved us.

¹² this is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.

¹⁷ of God. Be respectful to all, love your brethren, fear God, and honour the king.

¹¹ Blessed shall you be when men shall revile and persecute you, and falsely charge you with all manner of evil for your attachment to me.

²² and ye shall be hated by all the world for professing my name: but he that perseveres unto the end, shall escape.

⁹ then shall they deliver you up to torments, and to death: and ye shall be hated by all nations upon my account.

¹³ you will be the object of universal hatred upon my account; but he that shall persevere unto the end, shall be saved.

²² blessed are you, when men shall hate you, discard you, reproach you, and treat you as infamous, for your attachment to the son of man.

²⁰ for every one that doth evil, hateth the light, and shunneth the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

⁷ the world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I plainly show, that their works are evil.

²³ he that hateth me, hateth my father also. ²⁴ if I had not done among them such works as no other ever did, they had been innocent: but though they have seen them, yet they hate both me and my father. ²⁵ so that the passage is fulfilled that is written in their law, "they hated me without a cause."

² having Jesus in our view, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down on the right hand of the throne of God.

⁴ Degenerate race, don't you know that friendship with vice is hostility against heaven. he that is a friend to the vicious world, is an enemy to God.

¹ Consider what proof the father has given us of his love, in allowing us to be called the sons of God: therefore the world does not know us, because it knew him not.

³ he that hath such an expectation should purify himself, even as he is pure.

¹³ Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

³² for if you only love those, who love you, where's the obligation? the very heathen return love for love.

¹⁴ I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I do not pray you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the malignity of it. ¹⁶ they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

⁴ according as he had chosen us in himself before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy, free from vice, and devoted to virtue. ⁵ having predetermin'd to adopt us by Jesus Christ to be his children, according to the good pleasure of his own will, ⁶ to display the glory of his grace, which has render'd us acceptable by his beloved son: ⁷ who has by his blood obtained for us the redemption, even the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ out of the over-flowing treasures of his comprehensive wisdom and contrivance. ⁹ for he has discover'd to us the secret of his will, that out of his meer good pleasure, he had purposed in himself, ¹⁰ when the full time of the dispensation was come, to reduce all things both in heaven and on earth, under one head in Christ. ¹¹ It is by him, that we have a share in the inheritance, which was before allotted to us, in consequence of his design, who executes the whole plan, as he himself had contriv'd it:

² in which you formerly liv'd, influenc'd by the customs of this world, and by the prince of the aerial powers, the spirits that now actuate the incredulous: ³ of which number we all have formerly been, leading our dissolute lives in gratifying the desires of our sensual imaginations: and were indeed obnoxious to the divine displeasure, as other. Gentiles were: ⁴ then it was that God, who is rich in mercy, thro' his great love, wherewith he loved us, ⁵ did raise us all, who were in that deadly state of sin, to life by Christ, for by grace ye are saved:

³ for even we ourselves were once inconsiderate, disobedient, deluded, addicted to variety of passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy, the deserving objects of mutual hatred. ⁴ but when the kindness and love of God our saviour display'd itself to mankind, ⁵ he saved us not in consideration of any virtuous actions which we had done, but out of his meer mercy, by the baptism of regeneration, he form'd us anew, by the plentiful effusion of the holy spirit, ⁶ thro' Jesus Christ our saviour: ⁷ that being justified by his favour, we should have the inheritance of eternal life, according to our hopes.

⁹ and this they were destin'd to. but you are the chosen race, you are kings and priests, the holy nation, the peculiar people, that you might display his glory, who called you out ¹⁰ of darkness into his marvellous light: you, who formerly were not a people, but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy, ¹¹ but at present have obtain'd it. I exhort you, my dear brethren, as strangers and travellers to avoid all sensual passions, as destructive to your ¹² souls. Let your behaviour among the Gentiles be virtuous, that instead of inveighing against you as vicious, they may observe your honest behaviour,

³ for the time past of your lives may suffice, to have liv'd in conformity to the Gentile customs, in impurity, licentiousness, sottishness, in dissolute festivals, and the criminal rites of idolaters.

⁴ ye are of God, my dear children, and you have overcome them: because he that is in you, is superior to him that is in the world. ⁵ they are of the world: therefore their doctrine is worldly, and the world are their disciples.

¹⁹ we know that we are the children of God, and the rest of the world are subject to the evil spirit. ²⁰ We know that the son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding to know him that is true: and we are with him that is true, by his son Jesus Christ. "he is the true God, who is the author of eternal life."

⁹ the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him.

¹⁷ which so enrag'd the dragon against the woman, that he went to make war with the rest of her race, who keep the commandments of God, and bear testimony to Jesus.

⁷ When the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, ⁸ and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea. ⁹ they will spread on the surface of the earth, and encompass the camp of the saints, and the beloved city: and fire shall descend from God out of heaven, and devour them.

²⁴ the disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

³⁴ then Simeon gave them his benediction, and said to Mary his mother, "the child you now see, shall occasion many in Israel to fall and rise again; he will be the Object of calumny,

⁴⁰ The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

¹⁶ upon which occasion the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he did such things on the sabbath-day.

³² (the Pharisees being inform'd what the people rumour'd concerning him, they and the chief priests sent their officers to seize him.)

⁵¹ verily, verily, I say unto you, whoever observes my doctrine, shall never die.

⁵⁹ then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus was conceal'd by the crowd which he pass'd thro', and so got out of the temple.

³¹ then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

⁵⁷ now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had publish'd an order, that if any man knew where he was, he should give information in order to have him seized.

²⁷ for it was truly against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, that Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, united themselves in this city, ²⁸ to effect what thy power and thy wisdom pre-determined to be done. ²⁹ and now, Lord, behold their threatnings: and enable thy servants to deliver thy word with freedom, ³⁰ by displaying thine hand in miraculous cures, and prodigies, which by the name of thy holy child Jesus shall be done.

⁵² was there ever any prophet whom your fathers did not persecute? have they not slain those who predicted the coming of that just person whom you have so lately betrayed and murder'd? ⁵³ you, I say, who received the law by the administration of angels, but have not however observ'd it. ⁵⁴ When they heard these things, they were transported with rage, and gnashed their teeth against him. ⁵⁵ but he, full of the holy spirit, fix'd his eyes towards heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ⁵⁶ and he said, there I see the heavens open, and the son of man standing on the right hand of God. ⁵⁷ then they broke out into a loud cry, and stopping their ears, fell upon him all at once. ⁵⁸ then they dragg'd him out of the city, and stoned him: the false witnesses having laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. ⁵⁹ Thus they stoned Stephen, while he was calling upon God, and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." ⁶⁰ and on his knees he cried with a loud voice, "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge." and having said this, he expired.

¹² we are fatigu'd by our manual toil: when reviled, we pray: when persecuted, we don't repine:

⁹ persecuted, but not forsaken; dejected, but not destroyed;

¹⁵ the very men who have persecuted the Lord Jesus, and the prophets even to death; who have persecuted us; they who are regardless of pleasing the deity, and are enemies to all mankind;

¹² and those who will live like Christians, shall generally suffer persecution.

¹⁸ and ye shall be brought before governors and kings upon my account, to bear testimony of me to them and the rest of the Gentiles.

³⁹ he that would preserve his life, shall lose it: and he that exposeth his life for my sake, shall save it.

¹⁹ then said they to him, where is thy father: Jesus answered, ye neither know me, nor my father: if ye knew me, ye would have known my father also.

⁵⁴ Jesus answered, if I honour'd my self, my honour would be vain: it is my father that honoureth me, of whom ye say, that he is your God.

³ and thus will they treat you, because they have not known the father, nor me.

¹⁷ and now, brethren, I know it was through ignorance, that both you and your rulers, have acted thus.

⁴¹ full of joy, that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for the name of Jesus.

¹⁶ for I will make him see how much he must suffer for my name.

²³ for considering, as I pass'd along, the deitys, which you adore, I met with an altar that had this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. now that GOD whom you worship without knowing him, is the same that I denounce to you.

²⁵ so not being able to agree, they retir'd, upon Paul's having told them, that the holy spirit had very justly said to our fathers by the prophet Esaias, ²⁶ "go to this people and say, hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive. ²⁷ for the heart of this people is become gross, their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted and I should heal them."

²⁸ As they did not seek the favour of God, by worshipping him, God gave them over to a depraved sense, to act unworthy of human nature;

⁸ which none of the rulers of this age understood: for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

³⁴ rouze from your sins, as is but just; for some of you have not the knowledge of God: I speak it to your shame.

³ but if our gospel be obscure, it is so only to those who are lost: ⁴ to those unbelievers, whose minds the God of this world has so blinded, that the glorious lustre of the gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, does not enlighten them. ⁵ for we preach not our selves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, professing our selves your servants for his sake. ⁶ for God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to enlighten others in the knowledge of the glory of God, which shines in the person of Jesus Christ.

⁸ in flaming fire, to take vengeance on those, who know not God, and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

¹³ on the contrary, rejoice at the share you have of sufferings, as well as Christ: that you may likewise triumph, when he shall appear in his glory. ¹⁴ if you suffer indignities in the cause of Christ, you are happy: for the glorious spirit of God rests upon you.

³ if we keep his commandments, that is a proof that we know him. ⁴ he that says, he knows him, and does not keep his commandments, is a lyar, and an enemy to the truth:

³ thou hast suffer'd, hast patience, for my name's sake thou hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

⁴⁶ his master will return on a day he does not expect him, and a an hour he is ignorant of; he will separate him from the rest, and give him a treatment answerable to his infidelity.

¹⁸ he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God. ¹⁹ and this is the subject of their condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ for every one that doth evil, hateth the light, and shunneth the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. ²¹ but he that doth right, cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, because they are agreeable to the will of God.

⁴¹ Jesus said to them, if you were blind, you would be excusable; but since you own that you see, you stand convicted.

⁴⁸ he that rejecteth me, and does not embrace my doctrine, hath one that condemns him: the doctrine that I have delivered, that shall condemn him in the last day.

¹¹ Jesus answered, you could not have any power over me, except you deriv'd it from above: therefore they who delivered me into your hands are the most culpable.

³⁰ God has been pleas'd to over-look this state of ignorance: but now he enjoins all men every where to repent:

²⁰ for ever since the creation of the world, his eternal power and divinity, things in themselves invisible, are clearly seen, being perceived by the things that are made; so that they are without excuse:

¹ Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art, that condemnest another, for by condemning them, you condemn yourself; since you that condemn them, do the same things.

¹⁴ but thanks be to God, who maketh me triumph, thro' Christ, and spreads his healing doctrine by me, in eevery place: ¹⁵ for God is pleased to accept my christian labours, in favour both of those who are in a saving, and of those who are in a ruinous state: ¹⁶ by the one my preaching is taken as a deadly poison, to the other it is a reviving potion. and who is so sufficient for such a commission?

⁴ For it is impossible for those who were once enlightned, and have received the heavenly gifts, communicated by the holy spirit, ⁵ and have known by experience the truth of the divine promises, and the miracles of the age that was to come; it is impossible, ⁶ if they shall fall away, to re-instate themselves by repentance: seeing, as far in them lies, they crucify the son of God afresh, and expose him to open shame.

¹⁷ he then that knows what is virtuous, and does not practise it, is a criminal.

¹⁶ men. You are free, don't let your liberty serve as a pretext for vice: but act as the servants

⁴⁰ but now ye seek to kill me, the man who has told you the truth, such as I have learnt it of God: Abraham did not act thus. ⁴¹ your actions are like your father. at this they reply'd, we are no bastards; we have but one father, even God. ⁴² Jesus said to them, if God were your father, ye would love me: for I was commissioned by God to come; I did not come of my self, but he sent me.

²³ whosoever denieth the son, disowns the father:

³³ and when the devil was cast out, the dumb man came to his speech; at which the people were amazed, saying, nothing like this was ever seen in Israel.

⁵ the blind recover their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

²⁰ Then he began to upbraid the towns where most of his miracles were wrought, for their not being converts. ²¹ wo unto thee, Chorazin, wo unto thee, Bethsaida: for if the miracles which were done among you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ²² I declare unto you, Tyre and Sidon shall be treated with less severity at the day of judgment than you. ²³ and thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be brought to destruction: for if the miracles which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have subsisted even to this day. ²⁴ I tell you likewise, that in the day of judgment, Sodom shall be treated with less severity than you.

³² for John instructed you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the licentious believed him. and tho' you saw that, you did not yet repent, so as to believe him.

¹² instantly he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, we never saw any thing like this.

¹² I declare unto you, that the people of Sodom shall be treated with less severity in the day of judgment, than that city. ¹³ wo unto thee Chorazin; wo unto thee Bethsaida: for if the miracles, which have been wrought among you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would long since have lain repenting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ therefore Tyre and Sidon shall be treated with less severity in the day of judgment, than you. ¹⁵ and thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to the sky, shall be plung'd into an abyss. ¹⁶ he that adheres to you, adheres to me; he that rejects you, rejects me: and he that rejects me, rejecteth him that sent me.

³⁷ Just as he advanc'd to the declivity of the mountain of Olives, the whole troop of disciples began to express their joy in loud acclamations, praising God, for the many miracles they had seen. ³⁸ "blessed be he, said they, whom the Lord hath sent to be our king. prosperity from heaven, and glory from the most high." ³⁹ upon this some of the Pharisees, who were in the crowd, said to him, master, rebuke your disciples. ⁴⁰ but he answer'd them, if they should be silent, the stones would exclaim.

¹⁹ what about? said he. why, about Jesus the Nazarean, said they, who was a prophet, eminently recommended, by his doctrine and his works, to the approbation of God and of all the people;

² who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him.

³⁶ but I have a better witness than that of John: for the works which my father hath order'd me to finish, those very works that I do, bear me witness, that 'tis the father who sent me.

³⁶ but I have already told you, that tho' you have seen me, you do not believe.

³¹ besides many of the people believed on him, and said, when Christ comes, will he do more miracles than this man hath done?

³² It was never heard since the world began, that any man gave sight to one that was born blind.

³² Jesus answered them, many good works have I shewed you from my father; for which of those works would you stone me?

³⁷ if I do not the works of my father, believe me not.

⁴⁷ upon this the chief priests and the Pharisees being assembled in council, said, what shall we do? for this man performs many miracles. ⁴⁸ if we let him go on at this rate, all will believe on him; and the Romans will come, and destroy both our temple and nation. ⁴⁹ but one of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest at that time, said to them, ye don't know what you are about. ⁵⁰ you little consider it is our interest, that one man should die for the people, to prevent the destruction of the whole nation.

¹⁰ for the chief priests had resolved to put even Lazarus to death;

³⁷ But though he had done so many miracles in their presence, yet they did not believe on him: ³⁸ so that the passage of Esaias the prophet was fulfilled, where he says, "Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ therefore they could not believe, according to what Esaias said in another place, "he hath blinded their eyes, ⁴⁰ and hardned their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them."

⁴⁵ and he that contemplates me, contemplates him that sent me.

⁹ Jesus said to him, have I been with you so long, and don't you know me yet? Philip, he that hath seen me, hath seen the father; why then do you say, shew us the father?

²² ye men of Israel attend to what I say; Jesus of Nazareth was a man whom God distinguished among you, by miracles, by prodigies, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you your selves also know:

³⁸ how Jesus of Nazareth divinely inspired by the holy spirit, and with miraculous power, went about doing good, and healing all that were under the oppression of the devil: because God was with him.

³⁰ whisperers, backbiters, enemies of God, injurious, proud, vain, inventers of vices, disobedient to parents, void of judgment,

⁷ because a sensual disposition of mind is averse to God: for it is not subject to the divine law, nor indeed can it be. ⁸ so that they who are in a carnal state, cannot be acceptable to the divine being. as for you,

⁴ cruel, enemies to virtue, traitors, insolent, conceited, and more devoted to pleasure than to piety:

³ how shall we escape, if we neglect that salutary doctrine? which was first published by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those that heard him; ⁴ God also giving an additional testimony both by signs, by prodigies, by divers miracles, and gifts of the holy spirit, which he distributes as he pleases.

⁸ heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: what ye have received gratis, give gratis.

⁴⁴ then he said, this is what I told you, while I was yet with you, that what has been written concerning me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, must be all accomplished.

³⁴ Jesus answered them, is it not written in your law, "I said ye are Gods?"

³⁶ for these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, "a bone of him shall not be broken."

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law: that every one may be silenc'd, and all the world plead guilty before God.

²⁴ being justified by his unmerited favour through the redemption that is by Jesus Christ:

⁷ If I have degraded myself for your advantage by preaching the holy gospel to you gratis, is that such a trespass?

²¹ I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if justification be by the law, Christ died to no purpose.

⁸ that we did not eat any man's bread for nothing: but with toil and fatigue work'd night and day to avoid being chargeable to any of you:

⁶ and he said to me, "it is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end: to him that is a-thirst I will freely give of the fountain of living water.

¹⁷ the spirit and the bride say, come. let him that heareth, say, come. let him that is a-thirst, come: and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

⁴⁹ and I am going to send you what my father has promis'd you. but continue in the city of Jerusalem, until you shall be endued with power from on high.

⁴² Jesus said to them, if God were your father, ye would love me: for I was commissioned by God to come; I did not come of my self, but he sent me.

¹⁶ and I will pray the father, and he shall give you another advocate, to abide with you for ever; ¹⁷ even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees nor knows him: but ye shall know him, for he shall dwell with you, and shall be in you.

²⁶ but the advocate, the holy spirit, whom the father will send for my sake, he will explain every thing to you, and make you remember, all that I have told you.

⁷ nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I do not go away, the advocate will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.

¹³ but when he, the spirit of truth shall come, he will inform you of all those truths: for he will not speak from himself; but the information he shall receive will he communicate: and acquaint you with what is to come. ¹⁴ he shall glorify me: for he will commuincate to you, the information, which I shall give him. ¹⁵ all that the father has is mine: that is the reason of my saying, "he shall communicate to you the information that I shall give him."

³² 'tis this Jesus whom God hath raised up, of which we all are witnesses. ³³ therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the father the promise of the holy spirit, he has diffused that spirit, the effects of which ye now see and hear.

³² and we are his witnesses in what we say, and so is the holy spirit, whom God hath given to those that obey him.

⁸ God who knows their hearts has granted them a testimonial, by giving them the holy spirit, even as he did to us:

⁶ whereby the testimony we gave concerning Christ was confirmed among you.

⁴ God also giving an additional testimony both by signs, by prodigies, by divers miracles, and gifts of the holy spirit, which he distributes as he pleases.

⁶ it appear'd by the water, and by the blood, who he was, even Jesus the Messiah; not by the water only, but by the water and by the blood: besides, the spirit is a witness too, now the spirit is truth itself. ⁷ There are three witnesses in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three testify the same thing. ⁸ so that there are three witnesses, the spirit, the water, and the blood: and these three testify the same thing. ⁹ if we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater: now this is the testimony, which God has given us of his son. ¹⁰ he that believeth on the son of God, hath the testimony of God thereto: he that does not believe God, impeaches his veracity, because he does not believe the testimony that God gave of his son.

¹ Then he shewed me a pure river of living water, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God, and of the lamb.

¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the son of God. ² according as they were delivered to us by persons, who were all along eye-witnesses, and had a share in the transactions themselves: ³ I have likewise thought proper; most excellent Theophilus, to write to you a particular account; having made a very diligent inquiry into the whole matter,

⁴⁸ you are witnesses of these things.

³⁵ he that relates this, was an eye-witness of it, and his relation is true: and he is so assured, what he says is true, that you may rely upon it.

²⁴ This is the disciple who testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

²¹ wherefore of those who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus convers'd among us, ²² from his baptism by John, to the day of his assumption, we should chuse one to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

¹⁵ but killed the prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

²⁰ for we cannot avoid publishing what we have seen and heard.

³³ Great was the power by which the apostles attested the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and they were all greatly favoured by the people.

³⁹ we are witnesses of all his transactions, both in Judea, and at Jerusalem. however, they put him to death, even that of the cross. ⁴⁰ but God raised him up the third day, and shewed him openly, ⁴¹ not to all the people, but to those witnesses, which God had before chosen: to us, I say, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. ⁴² and he commanded us to publish, and to testify to the people, that he was the person whom God had constituted to be the judge of the living, and of the dead.

³¹ and for many days he was seen by those, who had accompany'd him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and they are now his witnesses to the people.

⁵ and when Silas and Timothy were arriv'd from Macedonia, Paul with great concern remonstrated to the Jews, that Jesus was the Messiah:

¹¹ The night following, the Lord appear'd to him, and said, Paul, take courage; for the same remonstrances that you have made concerning me at Jerusalem, you must likewise make at Rome.

¹ I address myself to you pastors, as being a pastor myself, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and as one who is to partake of the glory, that shall hereafter be made manifest;

¹² I formerly writ to you a short epistle, by Silvanus, I think, a faithful brother, to declare and testify to you, that the true dispensation of God is that to which you are attach'd.

¹ Concerning the Logos, the author of Life, we declare what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have consider'd, and what has been the object of our touch. ² for the life was manifested, we have seen it, we testify of it, and denounce unto you, that eternal life which was with the father, and was manifested unto us.

¹⁴ and we have seen, and do testify, that the father hath sent the son to be the saviour of the world.

² who publish'd the divine message, and gave his attestation to every thing that he saw concerning Jesus Christ.

⁹ I JOHN, who am your brother, and partake in the tribulation, in the reign, and in the patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony I gave of Jesus Christ.
