¹ Jesus therefore knowing the Pharisees had heard that he made more disciples, and baptized more than John, ² (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples) he left Judea, ³ and returned into Galilee. ⁴ but being obliged to pass through Samaria, ⁵ he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the piece of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. ⁶ now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat him down by the well: it being about the sixth hour. ⁷ where a woman of Samaria being come to draw water, Jesus said to her, give me to drink. ⁸ for his disciples were gone away to the city to buy provisions. ⁹ but the woman of Samaria said to him, how is it that you who are a Jew, ask drink of me, who am a Samaritan? (for the Jews have no friendly intercourse with the Samaritans.) ¹⁰ Jesus answered her, if you knew the dispensation of God, and who it is that says to you, give me to drink; you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water. ¹¹ sir, said the woman, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then can you get that living water? ¹² are you wiser than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, as well as his children, and cattle? ¹³ Jesus answered her, they that drink of this water, will be thirsty again: ¹⁴ but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst: for the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a fountain springing up to everlasting life. ¹⁵ sir, replied the woman, give me this water, that I may never be adry, nor come hither to draw more. ¹⁶ go, call your husband, said Jesus, and come again. ¹⁷ the woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus replied, you were in the right to say you have no husband: ¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have, is not your husband: in that you said true. ¹⁹ the woman said to him, sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. ²⁰ our fathers worshipped upon this mountain; and you say, that Jerusalem is the place where we ought to perform our worship. ²¹ Jesus said to her, woman, believe me, the time is coming when it shall be neither on this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem that ye shall worship the father. ²² ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is from the Jews. ²³ but the time is coming, nay, is very nigh, when the true worshippers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth: for they are the worshippers which he requires. ²⁴ God is a spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth. ²⁵ then said the woman to him, I know that the Messias (that is to say the Christ) is to come, and when he is come, he will tell us all things. ²⁶ Jesus said to her, I that am talking with you am he. ²⁷ Upon this his disciples came, and were surpriz'd at his conversing with the woman: yet none of them said, what did you ask her? or, why do you talk with her? ²⁸ the woman then left her water-pot, and went away into the city, and said to the people, come, ²⁹ see a man who told me all that ever I have done: is not this the Christ? ³⁰ so they went out of the city, and came to him. ³¹ In the mean while his disciples invited him, saying, pray master, eat. ³² but he answered them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of: ³³ upon which the disciples said one to another, hath any man brought him any thing to eat? ³⁴ Jesus said to them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. ³⁵ is it not a common saying, "t'other four months, and then comes harvest?" lift up your eyes now, I say, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. ³⁶ he that reapeth, receiveth wages, by gathering fruit unto life eternal: that the sower, and the reaper, may both rejoice together. ³⁷ upon this occasion, that saying is verified, "one soweth, and another reapeth." ³⁸ I sent you to reap where you bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and you are entred into their labours. ³⁹ Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, for that testimony which the woman gave him, "he told me all that ever I did." ⁴⁰ so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days. ⁴¹ and many more believed, for having heard him speak himself: and said to the woman, ⁴² now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ. ⁴³ Two days after, he departed thence, and went into Galilee: ⁴⁴ (tho' Jesus himself had declared, that a prophet is not honoured in his own country.) ⁴⁵ when he was come into Galilee, he was well received by the Galileans, who had seen all that he did at Jerusalem during the feast: for they likewise went to the feast. ⁴⁶ Jesus went therefore a second time to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. now a certain nobleman was there, whose son was sick at Capernaum. ⁴⁷ who having heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went there to desire him to come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ but Jesus said to him, except you see signs and miracles, you will not believe. ⁴⁹ the nobleman said to him, sir, pray come down before my child be dead. ⁵⁰ go thy way, said Jesus: thy son is well. and the man believed what Jesus had said to him, and went his way. ⁵¹ as he was upon the road, his servants met him, and acquainted him, that his son was well. ⁵² then he enquired of them the hour when he began to mend: and they answered, yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. ⁵³ so the father knew that it was at the very same hour, at which Jesus said to him, thy son is well. and he himself believed, and all his family. ⁵⁴ Jesus did this second miracle when he return'd from Judea to Galilee.

⁷⁶ and you, dear babe, you shall be the prophet of the most high: for you shall go before the Lord, in order to prepare his way,

¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

³¹ if any one should ask you, why you untie it, let this be your answer, because the Lord has occasion for it.

³⁴ they answer'd, because the Lord has occasion for it.

²² After this Jesus went with his disciples into Judea, where he stay'd with them for some time,

²⁶ who thereupon went to John, and said, master, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, he himself does now baptize likewise, and the people flock to him.

³⁶ this was what he communicated to the children of Israel, proclaiming salvation by Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all mankind.

⁸ which none of the rulers of this age understood: for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

⁴⁷ the first man was formed from the dust of the earth: the second man was from heaven.

⁵ for we preach not our selves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, professing our selves your servants for his sake.

¹ My brethren, let not your christian profession be accompanied with partiality.

¹⁶ on the mantle about his thigh was this inscription, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

⁴⁸ so he directed they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. after which they desired him to stay some time with them.

¹³ and I of Christ." is the school of Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptized into the name of Paul? ¹⁴ I thank God, I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius: ¹⁵ lest any should say, I had baptized into mine own name. ¹⁶ true, I baptized the family of Stephanas: but I don't know that I baptized any other besides. ¹⁷ for Christ did not send me to baptize: but to preach the gospel: tho' not with the preaching of the wise, lest the cross of Christ should have been hinder'd in its efficacy.

²³ Then if they persecute you in one city, fly to another: for I assure you, before you have preach'd thro' all the cities of the Jews, the son of man will come.

⁷ But Jesus retired with his disciples towards the sea: where a great multitude followed him from Galilee, from Judea,

⁴³ The day following Jesus having a mind to go into Galilee, met with Philip, and said to him, follow me.

¹¹ thus was the first miracle of Jesus wrought at Cana in Galilee, by which he displayed his power; and his disciples believed on him.

³² and what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; but his testimony doth no man receive.

⁴⁰ to the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.

⁵⁴ For which reason he did not afterwards appear publickly among the Jews; but retir'd into the country near the desart, to a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

⁵ Jesus made these twelve his missionaries, and gave them these instructions, don't go any where among the Gentiles, nor enter into any city of the Samaritans. ⁶ but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

⁴⁹ Jesus replied, why were ye so sollicitous about me? don't you know that 'tis my business to be in my father's house?

⁵¹ Now the time of his assumption drawing nigh, he was fix'd in his resolution to go to Jerusalem: ⁵² and he sent messengers before, who went to a town of the Samaritans, to prepare a lodging for him.

¹¹ As Jesus was going to Jerusalem, he happen'd to pass between Samaria and Galilee.

¹² are you wiser than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, as well as his children, and cattle?

² there having fasted forty days and forty nights, he at length grew hungry.

²⁴ and on a sudden so great a storm arose at sea, that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour to the ninth, the whole land was cover'd with darkness.

⁷ and being brought to bed of her first born, she swathed him, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

⁵⁸ Jesus answered him, foxes have their kennels, and birds of the air their nests, but the son of man hath not where to lay his head.

⁹ Jesus answered, are there not twelve hours in the day? he that travels by day does not stumble, because he has the light of this world to see by.

⁹ for you are sensible of the beneficence of our Lord Jesus Christ; powerful as he was, for your sake he became poor, that you through his poverty might be made rich.

¹⁷ whence it was necessary he should be in all things like his brethren; that he might be a merciful high priest, and faithfully discharge the divine office of expiating the sins of the people.

¹⁵ not an high priest who is incapable of compassionating our miseries; since he was exposed to the same trials as we are, sin only excepted. let

⁴² and whoever shall give only a cup of cold water to the meanest of you, considering him as my disciple, shall most assuredly be far from losing his reward.

¹⁰ Jesus answered her, if you knew the dispensation of God, and who it is that says to you, give me to drink; you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water.

²⁸ after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst.

¹³ and he said to them, do you yourselves give them something to eat. they replied, we can furnish only five loaves and two fishes, unless we go and buy provisions for all this people:

⁵ he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the piece of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

³⁹ Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, for that testimony which the woman gave him, "he told me all that ever I did."

⁵ Jesus then lifting up his eyes, and seeing a great company coming to him, said to Philip, where can we buy bread to feed this people? ⁶ (this he said to prove Philip: for he himself knew what he had to do.) ⁷ Philip answered him, two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient to furnish every one of them a little.

³³ but a certain Samaritan being on the road, came where he was, and when he saw him, he took compassion on him,

¹⁶ then prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, he gave him thanks. now this man was a Samaritan. ¹⁷ and Jesus said to him, were not all the ten healed? where then are the other nine? ¹⁸ is no body return'd to glorify God, but this alien only? ¹⁹ and he said to him, rise, go your way, your faith has sav'd you.

²⁷ Upon this his disciples came, and were surpriz'd at his conversing with the woman: yet none of them said, what did you ask her? or, why do you talk with her?

⁴⁸ The Jews answered, and said to him, are we not in the right to say, that you are a Samaritan, and are really mad?

⁸ but ye shall receive the influence of the holy spirit, which will descend upon you: and ye shall be witnesses for me, in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

²⁸ said he, how unlawful it is for a Jew, to frequent a stranger, or even to go to his house: but God hath shewed me, that I should not look upon any man as common and unclean.

⁸ I tell you, tho' he will not rise, to supply him, out of friendship: yet out of regard to his importunity, he will rise, and lend him whatever he has occasion for. ⁹ I tell you likewise, ask, and it shall be given: seek, and ye shall find: knock, and the door shall be opened. ¹⁰ for every one that asketh, receives: he that seeketh, finds: and he that knocks has admittance.

¹³ if ye then, wicked as ye are, know how to give what is proper to your children: how much more shall your heavenly father give the holy spirit to them that ask him?

¹³ but the Publican, who stood a good way lower, not daring to lift up even his eyes to heaven, only smote his breast, and said, O God, be merciful to me, who am a sinner. ¹⁴ I tell you this man went home approv'd as just, and not the other. for whoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

⁴² then said he to Jesus, Lord, remember me when you enter into your kingdom. ⁴³ Jesus answer'd, verily I tell you, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.

¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁴ but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst: for the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a fountain springing up to everlasting life.

²⁵ then said the woman to him, I know that the Messias (that is to say the Christ) is to come, and when he is come, he will tell us all things. ²⁶ Jesus said to her, I that am talking with you am he.

³⁵ Jesus answer'd, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me, shall never thirst.

⁵¹ I am the living bread, that is come down from heaven: whosoever shall eat of this bread, shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

³⁷ In the last day, the most solemn day of the feast, Jesus being there, raised his voice, and said, if any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink. ³⁸ he that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water. ³⁹ (but this he meant of the spirit, which they that believed on him, should receive: for the spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

³⁵ Jesus having heard that they had excommunicated him; and meeting with the man, he said to him, do you believe on the son of God? ³⁶ he answered and said, who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? ³⁷ Jesus said to him, not only thou hast seen him, but it is he himself that is talking with thee. ³⁸ then said he to Jesus, Lord, I believe: and prostrated himself before him.

³ and thus will they treat you, because they have not known the father, nor me.

³ and this is life eternal, to acknowledge thee to be the only true God, and Jesus to be the Messiah whom thou hast sent.

¹¹ and the Lord said unto him, arise, and go to the street called Straight, and enquire at the house of Judas, for one Saul of Tarsus: for he is there at prayer.

³² he that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all, will he not with him likewise freely give us all things?

³⁰ for from him it is that ye believe in Christ Jesus, whom God has made to us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that,

⁴ and all drank the same spiritual drink: (for they drank of what flowed from the spiritual rock: and that rock was Christ.)

¹⁵ thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

⁸ for by grace are ye saved, thro' faith (and that not from us:

²⁰ We know that the son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding to know him that is true: and we are with him that is true, by his son Jesus Christ. "he is the true God, who is the author of eternal life."

¹⁷ you say you are rich, and have increased your gain, and have need of nothing; but you do not consider that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. ¹⁸ I counsel thee to purchase of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayst be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayst be cloathed, and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear; and an ointment for thine eyes to make you see clear.

¹⁷ for the lamb who is in the midst before the throne, shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

⁶ and he said to me, "it is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end: to him that is a-thirst I will freely give of the fountain of living water.

¹ Then he shewed me a pure river of living water, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God, and of the lamb. ² in the midst of the area, surrounded by the river, was the tree of life, which had twelve fruit-seasons, yielding its fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

¹⁷ the spirit and the bride say, come. let him that heareth, say, come. let him that is a-thirst, come: and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

⁴ Nicodemus replied, how can a man be born when he is old? can he enter into his mother, and be born a second time?

¹⁴ but the animal man does not receive the effusions of the spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him; neither can he understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

⁴² the queen of the south shall rise up at the day of judgement against this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the remote parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now a greater than Solomon is here.

⁶ now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat him down by the well: it being about the sixth hour.

⁵³ are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? the prophets likewise are dead: pray, what do you then pretend to be?

³ but as the architect is of much greater dignity than the house he has made; so the glory which Christ received was greater than that of Moses.

²⁴ and he cry'd out, saying, father Abraham, take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

²⁷ work not for the food which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto everlasting life, and which the son of man shall give unto you, for to him it is that the father, that is God, has given his credentials.

⁴⁹ your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and there they died.

⁴⁶ and these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

⁵⁸ this is that bread which came down from heaven: very different from that manna, which your fathers did eat but died nevertheless: he that eateth of this bread, shall live for ever.

¹⁰ the thief comes only to steal, to kill, and destroy: but I am come that they might have life, and have it with all its advantages.

²⁶ and no man living that believeth in me, shall ever die.

¹⁶ and I will pray the father, and he shall give you another advocate, to abide with you for ever; ¹⁷ even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees nor knows him: but ye shall know him, for he shall dwell with you, and shall be in you. ¹⁸ I will not leave you orphans; I will come again to you. ¹⁹ yet a little while, and the world shall see me no more: but ye shall see me: because I shall live again, and ye shall live also.

² for thou hast given him power over all men, that he might give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. ³ and this is life eternal, to acknowledge thee to be the only true God, and Jesus to be the Messiah whom thou hast sent.

²¹ that as sin prevailed unto death, even so might the divine favour prevail by righteousness unto eternal life, thro' Jesus Christ our Lord.

²³ for the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹⁶ the same spirit testifies to our spirit, that we are the children of God. ¹⁷ and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; although we now suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

²² and mark'd me with his seal, and given me the earnest of the spirit in my heart.

¹³ by whom you also have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: and having believed in him, ye were mark'd with the seal of the holy spirit, which was promised: ¹⁴ and this is the pledge of our inheritance, being given for the deliverance of his peculiar people, to the display of his glory.

³⁰ grieve not the holy spirit of God, by whom you are sealed against the day of deliverance:

²² You that have purified your souls by the holy spirit, in obeying the gospel, which obliges you to an undisguised benevolence, let your hearts be mutually affected with the most disinterested ardour;

¹⁶ they shall no more suffer hunger or thirst, neither shall the sun dart on them, nor any heat molest them.

²⁶ Jesus answered them, I declare unto you, you seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye had loaves to eat, and were filled.

³⁴ then said they, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

⁵ for they that are sensually affected, abandon themselves to sensuality, but the spiritual pursue their spiritual entertainments.

³ you would not obtain it, because you wickedly request to have your passions gratified.

⁴² and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone.

⁴⁷ Jesus seeing Nathanael coming, said of him, there's a true Israelite, in whom is no guile. how do you know me? ⁴⁸ said Nathanael to him. before Philip called you, replied Jesus, I saw you under the fig-tree.

²⁴ but Jesus did not trust his person with them, because he knew them all. ²⁵ and he did not want any information concerning man: for he knew of himself the secret of their hearts.

¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have, is not your husband: in that you said true.

¹⁷ Jesus said to him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved at his asking him the third time, "do you love me?" and he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

¹³ so that there is not a creature that is concealed from his view: but all is naked and open to the eyes of him of whom we speak. Having then so great a high priest,

²³ I will strike her children dead; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searcheth the reins and the heart: and I will give to every one of you according to your works.

¹² and if a woman quits her husband and is married to another, she committeth adultery.

³ wherefore she will be reputed an adulteress if she become another man's during her husband's life: but if her husband dies, she is clear from that law, from the imputation of being an adulteress, though she become another man's.

¹⁰ as to the married, I enjoin this rule, not as from my self, but from the Lord, that a woman should not leave her husband: ¹¹ but if she has separated herself, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

⁴ Marriage is every where honourable, and that state is innocent: but the licentious and adulterers God will punish.

¹¹ and the crowd said, 'tis Jesus the prophet of Nazareth in Galilee.

¹⁶ all that were present were seized with dread, and glorified God, saying, a great prophet is risen up among us, and God has visited his people.

³⁹ which the Pharisee, who had invited him, observing, he thus argued with himself, if this man were a prophet, he could not but know that the woman, who is so busy with him, is a person of a loose character.

¹⁹ what about? said he. why, about Jesus the Nazarean, said they, who was a prophet, eminently recommended, by his doctrine and his works, to the approbation of God and of all the people;

⁴⁸ said Nathanael to him. before Philip called you, replied Jesus, I saw you under the fig-tree. ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered, rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel.

²⁹ see a man who told me all that ever I have done: is not this the Christ?

¹⁴ The people, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, cry'd out, this is of a truth that prophet who was to come into the world.

⁴⁰ many of the people therefore, who heard this discourse, said, this man is certainly a prophet.

¹⁷ they therefore question'd the blind man again, what do you say of the man that made you see? he is a prophet, said he.

²⁴ but if you all expound, and an unbeliever, or one unlearned come in, he is examin'd by all, he is tryed by all: ²⁵ the secrets of his heart become manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and declare that God is certainly amongst you.

⁵³ but they would not entertain him, because he appear'd to them, as if he was going to Jerusalem.

²⁰ for where two or three are assembled in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

¹⁹ go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost:

⁵ Some having said of the temple, that the stone-work was fine, and the furniture magnificent: ⁶ the time is coming, said he, when these buildings, which you now view, shall be all thrown down and lost in ruins.

²⁴ by the destructive sword shall they fall, and be led into captivity among all nations: and Jerusalem shall be kept waste by the nations, as long as those nations shall subsist.

²³ but the time is coming, nay, is very nigh, when the true worshippers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth: for they are the worshippers which he requires.

²⁵ I declare unto you, the time is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God: and they that hear shall live.

²⁸ let not this surprize you: for the time is coming, when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and they that have done good,

⁶ Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man can come to the father, but by me.

² they shall expel you out of the synagogues: yea, the time is coming, when it will be thought an agreeable sacrifice to God for any one to take away your lives.

³² but, alas, the time is coming, yea, is already come, when ye shall be dispers'd every one to his own retreat, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the father is with me.

¹⁴ for we have heard him say, that Jesus the Nazarene shall destroy this place, and change the customs which Moses delivered us.

¹⁸ for thro' him both of us have access by the same spirit to the father.

¹⁴ for this cause I bow my knees unto the father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

⁸ I direct therefore that the men pray in publick and private, lifting up their hands to heaven with innocence, charity, and composure.

¹⁷ and since you invoke him as your father, who without respect of persons judges every one according to his actions; while you are passing thro' this world, be fearful of offending him:

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

²³ for considering, as I pass'd along, the deitys, which you adore, I met with an altar that had this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. now that GOD whom you worship without knowing him, is the same that I denounce to you.

³⁰ God has been pleas'd to over-look this state of ignorance: but now he enjoins all men every where to repent:

¹ What advantage then hath the Jew? or what benefit is there from circumcision? ² much every way: chiefly, because they were intrusted with the oracles of God.

⁴ who are Israelites; who had the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the law, the form of divine worship, and the promises; ⁵ who are the offspring of the patriarchs, and of whom as to the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

¹⁴ since it is evident that our Lord sprang out of the tribe of Juda, to which Moses never ascribed the priesthood.

⁷ the prophecy of Esaias exactly suits such hypocrites as you; ⁸ "this people, says he, draw nigh to me, they honour me with their lips: while their hearts are far from me. ⁹ but in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrines the institutions of men."

¹¹ the Pharisee in a standing posture pray'd thus by himself, O God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men, a robber, a cheat, an adulterer, or like that Publican. ¹² I fast twice a week, and I pay the tythe of all I possess. ¹³ but the Publican, who stood a good way lower, not daring to lift up even his eyes to heaven, only smote his breast, and said, O God, be merciful to me, who am a sinner.

¹⁷ the law indeed was delivered by Moses, but grace and truth was the dispensation of Jesus Christ.

²¹ Jesus said to her, woman, believe me, the time is coming when it shall be neither on this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem that ye shall worship the father.

²³ but Jesus answered them, saying, the time is come, when the son of man is to be glorified.

⁹ for God is my witness, to whom I am entirely devoted, in preaching the gospel of his son, that I constantly make mention of you, in my prayers, requesting,

¹⁵ for the spirit you have received is not servile to keep you still in fear; but it is the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, that is, father.

²⁶ The spirit likewise softens our afflictions: for being at a loss to apply for the most proper relief; the spirit it self affects us with those pious ejaculations, which we can't well express.

⁶ and because ye are sons, God has sent forth the spirit of his son into your hearts, crying Abba, that is, father;

¹⁸ Pour out your souls unto God upon all occasions, watching in prayer with all perseverance and supplication for all christians:

³ for we are the genuine sons of Abraham, who worship God in the spiritual manner, and value no other dependance than that on Jesus Christ, without confiding in any external advantages:

⁹ and this they were destin'd to. but you are the chosen race, you are kings and priests, the holy nation, the peculiar people, that you might display his glory, who called you out

²⁰ but you, my brethren, improve yourselves in your most holy faith, present your addresses by the holy spirit, ²¹ and thereby cultivate the divine favour, in the expectation of eternal life by the mercy of Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹² for this is to me matter of glorying, the testimony of my conscience, that without artifice, and with religious sincerity, not by worldly wisdom, but by God's favourable assistance I have behaved my self towards all men, but more particularly to you.

¹⁷ for the spiritual meaning of the law centers in him, and the spirit of the law is gospel-liberty:

¹⁷ to the king of the world, the immortal, invisible, and the only God be honour and glory to endless ages. amen.

¹⁶ Jacob father of Joseph the husband of Mary of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

⁴¹ the first he met was his own brother Simon, to whom he said, "we have found the Messias," that is to say, the Christ. ⁴² and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone.

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered, rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel.

⁴² now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ.

²⁰ Then he charged his disciples not to tell any man that he was the Christ.

¹⁵ can't I do what I will with my own? because I am bountiful, are you invidious?

⁶³ but Jesus made no reply. and the high priest said to him, I conjure thee by the living God, to tell us, are you the Christ the son of God? ⁶⁴ Jesus reply'd, I am: moreover I declare to you, within a while ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of God, and coming on the clouds of heaven.

⁶¹ but Jesus remain'd silent, and gave no answer. then the high priest asked him again, and said to him, art thou the Christ, the son of the most High? ⁶² and Jesus answered, I AM. and ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

³⁰ then you will see those, who were last, become first: and those who were first, become last.

²⁴ therefore I said to you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if you don't believe me to be what I am, ye shall die in your sins.

³⁵ Jesus having heard that they had excommunicated him; and meeting with the man, he said to him, do you believe on the son of God? ³⁶ he answered and said, who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? ³⁷ Jesus said to him, not only thou hast seen him, but it is he himself that is talking with thee.

²⁰ but Esaias is more express, and says, "I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest to them that asked not after me. ²¹ and to Israel he says, "all day long I have stretched forth my hands to an incredulous and rebellious people."

⁸ for his disciples were gone away to the city to buy provisions. ⁹ but the woman of Samaria said to him, how is it that you who are a Jew, ask drink of me, who am a Samaritan? (for the Jews have no friendly intercourse with the Samaritans.)

⁸ And they instantly left the sepulchre, with fear and joy, and ran to carry his disciples this good news.

⁸ at this they started out, and fled from the sepulchre in a violent consternation, without speaking a word to any by the way: they were so frighted. ⁹ Now Jesus being risen early on the first day of the week, he appear'd first to Mary Magdalene, whom he had dispossess'd of seven demons. ¹⁰ immediately she went to those who frequented Jesus, and were then bemoaning themselves in tears, and acquainted them with it.

⁹ and upon their return from the sepulchre, they related the whole matter to the eleven, and all the other disciples.

³³ and immediately they set out, and return'd to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven, and the rest of their company, all assembled, who said,

⁷ where a woman of Samaria being come to draw water, Jesus said to her, give me to drink.

²³ which made the people cry out with amazement, "Is not this the son of David?"

⁴¹ the first he met was his own brother Simon, to whom he said, "we have found the Messias," that is to say, the Christ. ⁴² and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone. ⁴³ The day following Jesus having a mind to go into Galilee, met with Philip, and said to him, follow me. ⁴⁴ now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ Philip meeting with Nathanael, said to him, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. ⁴⁶ but Nathanael said to him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? come and see, said Philip. ⁴⁷ Jesus seeing Nathanael coming, said of him, there's a true Israelite, in whom is no guile. how do you know me?

¹⁷ the woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus replied, you were in the right to say you have no husband: ¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have, is not your husband: in that you said true.

²⁵ then said the woman to him, I know that the Messias (that is to say the Christ) is to come, and when he is come, he will tell us all things.

²⁶ yet there he is talking publickly without any opposition: are not the rulers convinc'd that he is the Messiah?

³¹ besides many of the people believed on him, and said, when Christ comes, will he do more miracles than this man hath done?

¹ When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the reign of king Herod, certain eastern Magi came to Jerusalem, with this enquiry, ² Where is this king of the Jews who is now born? for we have seen his rising star, and are come to pay him homage. ³ when king Herod heard these things, he was alarm'd, and all Jerusalem with him.

¹¹ and I declare unto you, that many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the heavenly kingdom. ¹² but the heirs to the kingdom shall be cast into the darkness without: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²⁰ Then he began to upbraid the towns where most of his miracles were wrought, for their not being converts. ²¹ wo unto thee, Chorazin, wo unto thee, Bethsaida: for if the miracles which were done among you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ²² I declare unto you, Tyre and Sidon shall be treated with less severity at the day of judgment than you. ²³ and thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be brought to destruction: for if the miracles which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have subsisted even to this day. ²⁴ I tell you likewise, that in the day of judgment, Sodom shall be treated with less severity than you.

⁴⁰ for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ⁴¹ the men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment against this generation, and shall condemn it, because they were converted at the preaching of Jonas, and now there is one superiour to Jonas here. ⁴² the queen of the south shall rise up at the day of judgement against this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the remote parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now a greater than Solomon is here.

¹⁶ thus the last shall be first, and the first last: for though many are invited, few have precedence.

¹⁶ then prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, he gave him thanks. now this man was a Samaritan. ¹⁷ and Jesus said to him, were not all the ten healed? where then are the other nine? ¹⁸ is no body return'd to glorify God, but this alien only?

⁵ Philip being arrived at Samaria, preached Christ to them. ⁶ the people attended with great unanimity, hearing his discourses, and observing the miracles he wrought. ⁷ for the impure spirits, with great outcries, came out of many that were possessed: many paralytic, and lame people were cured. ⁸ which caused great joy in that city.

³³ immediately I sent to you; and you have done well to come. now here we are all in the presence of God, to hear whatever he has given you in charge.

⁴² When Paul and Barnabas were gone out of the Jewish synagogue, the Gentiles desired them to entertain them on the same subject, the following sabbath.

²⁸ take notice therefore, that the offers of divine salvation are sent to the Gentiles, and they will receive them.

²⁰ the law was introduc'd, that the greatness of the fall might fully appear; but the more sin display'd its enormity, the divine favour was so much the more transcendent.

⁷ to be saluted in publick places, and to have men address to them with the title of Doctor Doctor.

³⁸ then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell?

³⁰ and bringing them out, he said, sirs, what must I do to be saved? ³¹ believe, said they, on the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you, and your family. ³² then they declared the word of the Lord to him, and to all his family. ³³ at the same time of night he washed their stripes, and immediately he was baptized, he, and all that belong'd to him. ³⁴ then he conducted them to his house, and gave them an entertainment; and he and his family were affected with joy, for having believed in God.

³⁴ Jesus said to them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

³⁵ my constant example has shown you that the disabled should be assisted by your labours, remembring the words of the Lord Jesus, who said, "it is a greater happiness to give than to receive."

¹⁷ he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches: to him that overcometh, will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man understands, except he that receives it."

⁶ and Jesus said to them, have a care of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees. ⁷ upon which they said to one another, this comes from our not taking any bread. ⁸ which Jesus perceiving, he said, distrustful men, why do ye trouble your heads about forgetting the bread? ⁹ where's your understanding? don't you remember the five loaves among five thousand and how many baskets ye took away? ¹⁰ nor the seven loaves among the four thousand, and how many baskets ye carried away? ¹¹ why, can't you perceive, that in cautioning you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees, I did not speak of bread?

⁴⁵ but they did not comprehend that expression: it was as a riddle, which they could not understand, and they were afraid to desire him to explain the meaning of that expression.

³⁹ Then advancing a little further, he fell prostrate in prayer, and said, "O my father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not mine, but thy will be done."

⁴ who of you that has an hundred sheep, will not, upon losing one, leave the ninety nine in the desart, to go after that which is lost, till he finds it? ⁵ and when he hath found it, joyfully lay it upon his shoulders? ⁶ and when he comes home, call his friends and neighbours together, and say to them, rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep, that was lost?

¹⁰ even so, I assure you, the angels in heaven rejoice, when any one sinner becomes a penitent.

¹⁰ for the son of man is come to seek, and to save that which was lost.

³² but he answered them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of:

³⁰ Of my self I can do nothing: according to my instructions I judge: and my judgment is just; because I do not consult my own will, but the will of the father who hath sent me.

³⁶ but I have a better witness than that of John: for the works which my father hath order'd me to finish, those very works that I do, bear me witness, that 'tis the father who sent me.

³³ for he who is descended from heaven, and gives life to the world, is the bread that is truely divine.

³⁸ for I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.

⁴ I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

³⁰ when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and bowing his head, he expir'd.

² having Jesus in our view, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down on the right hand of the throne of God.

³⁷ the harvest indeed is plentiful, but the labourers are few: ³⁸ entreat therefore the Lord of the harvest, to send forth labourers into his harvest.

² and he said to them, the harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few: intreat therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers into his harvest. ³ go then: I send you as lambs among wolves.

³⁰ so they went out of the city, and came to him.

¹³ now I would not have you ignorant, my brethren, that I often purposed to come to you, tho' I have been hindered hitherto, that I might be useful among you as well as among other Gentiles.

²² but now being set free from sin, and actually in the service of God, the present advantage you reap is holiness, and the future everlasting life.

⁵ who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye have received faith according to the divine gifts imparted to each of them? ⁶ I have planted, Apollos watered: but God gave the increase. ⁷ so then, neither is he that planted any thing, nor he that watered: it is God only that gives the increase. ⁸ he that planteth, and he that watereth, have the same design: and each shall receive his proper reward, in proportion to his own labour. ⁹ For we are fellow labourers employed by God: you are his field, and his mansion.

¹⁹ for tho' I am independent of all men, yet have I subjected myself to all, that I might gain the more. ²⁰ to the Jews, I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law; ²¹ to those who are without the law, as without that law, (not as being under no law to God, but as under the law to Christ) that I might gain those who are without the law. ²² to the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak: I became all things to all men, that I might save all sorts of men. ²³ and I do all for the gospel's sake, that I may share in the benefits thereof.

¹⁵ that you may be without reproach, the inoffensive spotless children of God in the midst of a depraved and perverse generation (among whom you should shine as stars in the world, ¹⁶ you, who display the doctrine of eternal life) that in the day of Christ I may have the satisfaction of not having pursued my laborious course in vain.

¹⁹ for what can be our hope, or joy, what can crown our pretensions, unless it be you, when we shall appear before the Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

¹⁶ take care how you behave, and what you teach. persevere in these duties: for by the practice of them, you will save both yourself, and those who hear you.

⁷ I have struggled in a glorious cause: I have finish'd my career: I have stood to the faith: ⁸ I have nothing more to do, but to receive the crown of virtue reserv'd for me, which the Lord, the just judge, will give me in that day: and not only to me, but to those also, who have long'd for his appearance.

¹⁹ My brethren, when any of you deviates from the truth, whoever sets him right, may be assured, ²⁰ that the retrieving of a sinner from his erroneous habits, is saving a soul from ruin, and cancels a multitude of sins.

²¹ for I was in fear of you, knowing you to be a hard master, who exact what you never gave, and reap where you have never sown.

¹ At that time appeared John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ² and saying, "Repent ye: for the kingdom of the Messiah draws nigh." ³ for it is of John the prophet Esaias spoke, when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear." ⁴ now John wore a coat made of camels hair, with a leathern girdle about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild hony. ⁵ Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem, of all Judea, and the whole country about Jordan, came to him: ⁶ and having confess'd their sins, they were baptized by him in Jordan.

²³ Thus went Jesus about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all sorts of diseases and infirmities among the people:

⁸ what did ye go to see? a man dress'd in rich apparel? why, they that are so array'd belong to the court: ⁹ or did you go to see a prophet? yes, and be assured, one superiour to a prophet. ¹⁰ for it is he that is meant in that passage, "behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee." ¹¹ I declare unto you, among the whole race of prophets, there never appear'd a greater than John the Baptist: (notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of the ¹² Messiah is greater than he.) for ever since the appearance of John the Baptist the gospel kingdom is as it were invaded, and people of the most violent passions enter into it with zeal. ¹³ for all the prophets and the law were your guides, till the coming of John.

⁷ he came as a witness, to represent what he knew of the light, that by his means all might be convinc'd.

⁴¹ then they that embraced his doctrine, were baptized: and there were about three thousand converts made that very day.

⁴ however, many who heard Peter's discourse, believed, to the number of about five thousand people.

³² Now the whole body of believers were but one heart, and one soul: no one look'd upon what he possessed, as his own, but every thing was held in common.

¹⁴ did not venture to approach near them. the number of those who believed in the Lord, both men and women, increas'd more and more.

⁷ thus the word of God was spread; and the number of disciples encreased very much at Jerusalem; and a numerous body of priests embrac'd the faith.

⁴ but they that were dispers'd, preach'd the gospel wherever they went.

¹⁴ Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem, heard that the Samaritans had embraced the word of God, they sent Peter and John, ¹⁵ who upon their arrival, prayed for them that they might receive the holy spirit. ¹⁶ (for as yet he had not descended on any of them: they having only been baptized in the name of the Lord ¹⁷ Jesus) the apostles therefore gave them imposition of hands, and they received the holy spirit.

³⁷ you know, how his fame spread from Galilee through all Judea, after the baptism which John had preach'd: ³⁸ how Jesus of Nazareth divinely inspired by the holy spirit, and with miraculous power, went about doing good, and healing all that were under the oppression of the devil: because God was with him.

⁴² and he commanded us to publish, and to testify to the people, that he was the person whom God had constituted to be the judge of the living, and of the dead. ⁴³ he is the person to whom all the prophets give this attestation, that all who believe in him, shall receive remission of sins, by his authority.

¹¹ when the spirit of Christ inform'd the minds of the prophets of his future sufferings, and of the glorious consequences, they were solicitous to know the circumstances of the times pointed at: ¹² and were answer'd, that it was not they, but we, who were concern'd in the events which they predicted, events which have been now represented to you by those, whom the holy spirit from heaven inspired to preach the gospel to you: a secret which the angels desire to penetrate into.

⁴¹ and many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but every thing that he said concerning this man, was true. ⁴² so that many people there believed on him.

⁴⁵ many therefore of the Jews who came to see Mary, and had seen what Jesus had done, believed on him.

³⁸ now the man, who had been dispossess'd, begg'd to take him with him. but Jesus dismissed him,

³⁹ now she had a sister, named Mary, who placed herself at the feet of Jesus, to attend to his discourse.

⁵ as soon as Jesus came at the place, he look'd up, and seeing him, Zaccheus, said he, make haste down; for I intend to dine at your house to-day. ⁶ so down he came in great haste, and gave Jesus a joyful reception. ⁷ upon seeing this, they all murmur'd, saying, he is going to be treated by a dissolute person. ⁸ but Zaccheus address'd himself to Jesus, and said, Lord, half my estate I give to the poor; and if I have wrong'd any man, I will give him four times the value. ⁹ then said Jesus, speaking of him, this day is salvation come to this family, since he is now become a true son of Abraham. ¹⁰ for the son of man is come to seek, and to save that which was lost.

²⁹ but they press'd him, saying, stay with us, for it is late and begins to be dark. so he went in to tarry with them.

¹⁵ so that having been baptized with her family, she made us this request, if you think me sincere in my profession, pray come and lodge at my house; and she prevail'd upon us.

¹ Invested then with such a commission, I beseech you let not the offers of divine favour be made to you in vain. ² for he saith, " I have heard thee in a favourable time, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee." now this is the favourable time; this is that day of salvation.

²⁰ behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, I will sup with him, and he shall afterwards be entertain'd by me.

²⁸ At length Jesus finished his discourse, and the people were fill'd with astonishment at his doctrine. ²⁹ for he taught them, as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

³² and they were astonished at his doctrine, for he spoke with authority.

⁶³ it is the action of the mind that vivifies, that of the body profits nothing: the words that I have delivered to you, spiritually understood, give life.

⁴⁶ the officers answered, never did man speak like this man.

¹² but when they had embraced the doctrine of Philip, concerning the kingdom of the Messias, and the authority of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

²⁵ after this the apostles having certified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel by the way in many villages of the Samaritans.

³ so they set out, accompanied part of the way by the church, and pass'd thro' Phenicia and Samaria, relating the conversion of the Gentiles, which gave great joy to all the brethren.

⁴ my discourse, and my preaching did not consist in the persuasive reasonings of human wisdom, but in demonstrating the spiritual meaning of the scriptures: ⁵ that your faith might not be owing to human wisdom, but to the divine influence.

²¹ and she shall be deliver'd of a son, to whom you shall give the name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

¹⁰ but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world. ¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

³² and the glory of thy people Israel."

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "behold the lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world."

¹⁴ but as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up: ¹⁵ that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷ for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. ¹⁸ he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God.

⁶⁸ but Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life. ⁶⁹ and we have believed and we have acknowledged that you are the Christ, the son of God.

¹⁷ When Jesus was arriv'd, he found that Lazarus had been then four days in the grave.

⁸ for I have given to them the instructions which you gave me; and they have received them; and have sincerely believ'd that I came from thee, and are persuaded that thou didst send me.

¹² salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved.

¹¹ the Jews there were of a more generous temper than those of Thessalonica: for they very readily embrac'd their doctrine, and daily examin'd, whether it was conformable to the scriptures. ¹² so that many of them believed, besides a considerable number of women of distinction, and of men, that were Greeks.

¹¹ for the scripture saith, "whosoever believeth on him, shall not be ashamed." ¹² In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him. ¹³ "whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved."

¹⁹ for it is God that has reconciled the world to himself, by Jesus Christ, by not imputing their sins to them; and hath committed to us the gospel of reconciliation.

¹⁰ for to that end we expose ourselves to trouble and reproach, because we hope in the living God, who is the saviour of all men, especially of believers.

¹⁴ and we have seen, and do testify, that the father hath sent the son to be the saviour of the world.

¹³ and leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, a maritime town upon the confines of Zabulon and Nepthalim:

²¹ Then Jesus went thence, and retir'd towards the district of Tyre and Sidon. ²² and there came a woman of Canaan from those quarters, and cried out to him, have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously tormented by a demon. ²³ but Jesus not making her any answer, his disciples came and entreated him to grant her request; for, said they, she is very importunate with us. ²⁴ but he answered, my commission was only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

²⁷ Jesus therefore said to her, let the children first be satisfy'd; for it would not be decent to take the children's bread, and throw it to puppys. ²⁸ she answer'd, true, Lord, yet puppys eat of the crumbs, which children drop under the table.

⁴⁰ so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days.

⁴⁶ Jesus went therefore a second time to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. now a certain nobleman was there, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

⁸ for I tell you, that Jesus Christ was a minister to the Jews, to manifest the veracity of God in fulfilling the promises made to the fathers:

⁵⁷ and they were scandaliz'd at him. but Jesus said to them, a prophet is not without honour, except in his own country and in his own family.

⁴ but Jesus said to him, a prophet is never despis'd, except in his own country, among his own kindred, and in his own family:

²⁴ but in truth, added he, no prophet was ever well received in his own country.

²³ Thus went Jesus about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all sorts of diseases and infirmities among the people: ²⁴ so that his fame was spread over all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were afflicted with any diseases or pains, demoniacs, lunatics, and paralytics; and he healed them.

⁴² when Jesus therefore was twelve years old they went thither, as was customary at the time of that festival. ⁴³ when that was expired, they returned, but the young Jesus staid behind in Jerusalem, without being miss'd either by Joseph or his Mother. ⁴⁴ so that they went a whole day's journey, imagining he was somewhere among the company, and then they look'd for him among their relations and acquaintance; but not finding him,

⁴⁰ Jesus upon his return was received by a great number of people, who expected him.

¹³ for the Jews passover being nigh, Jesus went up to Jerusalem, ¹⁴ where he found in the temple those that sold oxen, sheep, and doves, besides the changers of money, who were sitting there. ¹⁵ upon which he made a whip of small cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with their sheep, and oxen; and threw about the changers money, and over-set the tables; and said to the dove-sellers, ¹⁶ away with these things; make not my father's house a market-house.

²³ Now whilst he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the passover, many believed in him when they saw the miracles which he did.

² who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him.

¹⁸ Whilst he thus entertain'd them, the ruler of the synagogue came and made his address to him, saying, my daughter is upon the point of death: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.

²² and there came a woman of Canaan from those quarters, and cried out to him, have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously tormented by a demon.

¹⁴ And when they were come to the multitude, a man came kneeling to him, and cry'd, ¹⁵ Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is grievously afflicted with the epilepsy; he often falls into the fire, and frequently into the water.

² where a certain centurion had a servant whom he greatly valued, lying sick and ready to die.

⁴² for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, who lay a dying. as he was on the way, the crowd press'd after him,

¹ Three days after, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee; where the mother of Jesus was present. ² as likewise Jesus and his disciples, who were all invited to the feast. ³ now when the wine was out, the mother of Jesus said to him, they have no wine. ⁴ Jesus answer'd her, woman, leave that affair to me, is not that my concern? ⁵ upon which his mother bid the servants do whatever he should order. ⁶ now there were six cisterns of stone plac'd there for the use of the Jews in their purifications, containing two or three firkins a-piece. ⁷ these Jesus order'd the waiters to fill with water. so they filled them up to the brim. ⁸ now fill out, said he, and carry it to the steward of the feast, which accordingly they did. ⁹ as soon as the steward had tasted the water that was made wine, (for he did not know whence it came, but the servants who drew the water knew it,) he called the bridegroom, ¹⁰ and said to him, 'tis usual to present the best wine first, and afterwards the worse, when the guests have drank pretty freely: but you have reserved the best wine to the last. ¹¹ thus was the first miracle of Jesus wrought at Cana in Galilee, by which he displayed his power; and his disciples believed on him.

² Simon Peter, Thomas, otherwise Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples of Jesus were all together.

¹ Some time after he returned to Capernaum; upon the rumour that he was there, ² so great a company assembled, that there was no room for them in the house, nor even about the door: and he preached the word unto them. ³ then they came and presented to him a paralytic, who had four men to carry him.

⁵⁵ came flocking from all quarters, carrying their sick on their beds to the places where they heard he was: ⁵⁶ and to whatever cities, towns, or villages he went, they expos'd the sick in the publick streets, entreating him, they might but touch the border of his garment; for as many as did so, were recover'd.

⁴⁷ when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he cried out, and said, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.

⁶ then Jesus went with him, and when he was advanced near the house, the centurion sent some of his friends to him, saying, "Lord, don't give yourself the trouble of coming, I don't deserve you should honour my house with your presence. ⁷ nor did I think myself worthy to attend you: speak but the word, and my servant shall be cured. ⁸ for though I am subject to authority, I have soldiers under me: I bid one go, and he goes: I bid another come, and he comes: I bid my servant do this, and he does it."

⁴¹ Some time after, a person nam'd Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came to Jesus, and upon his knees desired him to come to his house:

³ and returned into Galilee.

⁵⁴ Jesus did this second miracle when he return'd from Judea to Galilee.

²¹ Lord, said Martha to Jesus, if you had been here, my brother had not been dead.

³² Mary being come to the place where Jesus was, as soon as she saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not been dead.

³⁸ as Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples having heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him to desire he would come to them without delay.

¹ Then the Pharisees and the Sadducees came, with a captious design, and desired him to show them some miracle in the sky.

²⁴ for there shall arise false Messiahs, and false prophets, and shall shew such astonishing miracles and prodigies, as to deceive, if that can do it, the very converts themselves.

⁴² he saved others, said they, but cannot save himself: if he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

²² for false Christs, and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and prodigies, so as to seduce, if it were possible, even the very elect.

¹⁸ upon which he said to them, I beheld satan falling, like lightning, from heaven.

³¹ Abraham replied, if they disregard Moses and the prophets, they will not believe any one, though he rose from the dead.

¹⁸ whereupon the Jews said, what miracle can you show to justify your behaviour?

⁴¹ and many more believed, for having heard him speak himself: and said to the woman, ⁴² now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ.

³⁷ But though he had done so many miracles in their presence, yet they did not believe on him:

²⁴ if I had not done among them such works as no other ever did, they had been innocent: but though they have seen them, yet they hate both me and my father.

²⁹ Jesus said to him, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they who have not seen, and yet have believed.

¹⁹ and I will shew prodigies in the heavens, and signs on the earth; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke.

²² ye men of Israel attend to what I say; Jesus of Nazareth was a man whom God distinguished among you, by miracles, by prodigies, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you your selves also know:

⁴³ and all the people were allarm'd at the many prodigies and miracles which were done by the apostles.

³⁰ by displaying thine hand in miraculous cures, and prodigies, which by the name of thy holy child Jesus shall be done.

¹² Thus were many signs and wonders wrought among the people, by the apostles, who us'd to meet in Solomon's porch with great unanimity:

⁸ Now Stephen full of grace and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

³⁶ he it was, who delivered them by doing prodigies and miracles in the land of Egypt, in the red sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.

³ however the apostles stay'd there a considerable time, being inspir'd with great resolution by the Lord, who gave his attestation to the evangelical doctrine, by the prodigys and miracles, which he did by their hands.

¹² The whole assembly were very silent, whilst Barnabas and Paul related what miracles and prodigies God had wrought among the Gentiles by their ministry.

¹⁹ by virtue of the miracles and prodigies wrought by the power of the divine spirit; so that from Jerusalem, and the neighbouring country, quite to Illyricum,

²² while the Jews require signs, and the Greeks seek wisdom:

¹² the marks indeed of an apostle I have shown among you by my extreme patience, by signs, and prodigies, and miracles.

⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies,

⁴ God also giving an additional testimony both by signs, by prodigies, by divers miracles, and gifts of the holy spirit, which he distributes as he pleases.

²³ and earnestly intreated him, saying, "my little daughter is at the last extremity, pray come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed, and live."

³⁵ Before he had done speaking, messengers came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, who said, "your daughter is dead, why do you give the master any further trouble?" ³⁶ Jesus, upon hearing that, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, "be not afraid, only believe."

¹³ and Jesus said to the centurion, go thy way, what you believed could be done, is effected for you. and his servant was healed in that very hour.

²⁹ then said Jesus to her, for this expression, go thy way, the demon has left your daughter. ³⁰ accordingly she went home, where she found that the demon was indeed gone out of her daughter, and she was lying on the bed.

²³ Jesus said to him, provided you can believe, there is nothing but what may be effected for those that believe. ²⁴ immediately the child's father cryed out with tears, I do believe, oh supply the defect of my faith.

¹⁴ as soon as he perceiv'd them, he said to them, go shew yourselves to the priests. and on the way they found themselves cured.

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, did I not tell you, that if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?

⁹ one day he heard Paul preach, who fixing his eyes upon him, and perceiving that he expected to be cured, ¹⁰ he said to him aloud, rise and stand right upon your feet: upon which he leap'd up and walk'd.

²⁰ he was not incredulously diffident of the divine promise; but was strong in faith, and did honour to God, ²¹ by the full persuasion he had, that what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

¹⁹ concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the grave; from whence, in a figurative sense, be may be said to have been recover'd.

⁵⁰ go thy way, said Jesus: thy son is well. and the man believed what Jesus had said to him, and went his way.

⁵³ so the father knew that it was at the very same hour, at which Jesus said to him, thy son is well. and he himself believed, and all his family.

⁸ the centurion answered, Lord, I am not worthy the honour of such a visit: do but give the word, and my servant is sav'd. ⁹ for I am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command: I bid this man, go, and he's gone: another, come, and he's here: and to my servant, do this, and it is done.

⁹ then said Jesus, speaking of him, this day is salvation come to this family, since he is now become a true son of Abraham.

³⁹ for the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

¹⁴ who will give you such instructions, as will be the means of saving both you and all your family.

³⁴ then he conducted them to his house, and gave them an entertainment; and he and his family were affected with joy, for having believed in God.

⁸ the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his family, as well as many of the Corinthians, who heard Paul, and were baptized.

⁴⁵ when he was come into Galilee, he was well received by the Galileans, who had seen all that he did at Jerusalem during the feast: for they likewise went to the feast.
