⁴ For certain men have insinuated themselves among you, who were formerly proscrib'd to be punish'd; impious men, who pervert the divine favour to licentiousness, and renounce their only master, and Jesus Christ our Lord.

²⁵ but while the people slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

³ and this is life eternal, to acknowledge thee to be the only true God, and Jesus to be the Messiah whom thou hast sent.

²³ who upon his arrival there, was glad to see such effects of the divine grace, and exhorted them all to remain firmly attach'd to the christian profession:

²⁴ Whereas we have been appriz'd, that some who went from us, have embarass'd you with their discourse, and unsettled your minds, maintaining, that you ought to be circumcised, and to observe the law, though we gave them no such injunction: after having been assembled,

¹ Do we then conclude thus, let us continue in sin, that the divine favour may be more fully display'd? ² God forbid, that we who have died to sin should live any longer therein.

²¹ is not the potter the master of his own clay, of the same mass to make one vessel for use and ornament, and another for a meaner purpose? ²² if the divine Being has patiently bore with those objects of his displeasure, that had been working out their own destruction, why may he not reveal himself to make them feel his vindictive power,

⁴ and as to the false brethren, who insidiously crept in to spy out our liberty which we have by Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into servitude;

¹³ for, brethren, you have been called to liberty. only abuse not this freedom as a pretext to vice, but in offices of love be as servants one to another.

¹⁴ that we should be no longer children, fluctuating, and carried about with every empty doctrine, by men vers'd in sleight and the crafty arts of deceit:

¹⁵ whose advent HE will in his own time display, WHO is perfectly happy, who alone is omnipotent, the king of kings, and the lord of all that bear rule; ¹⁶ who alone is essentially immortal, dwelling in that inaccessible light, which no mortal ever saw, or can see: to whom belongs everlasting honour and empire. amen.

⁶ Of this number are they, who insinuate themselves into families, to make a prey of the weaker sex, who are inveigled by their vitious suggestions, abetted by their own subtle passions,

¹⁵ to the pure all things are pure: but to corrupt infidels nothing is pure; whose very mind and conscience is polluted. ¹⁶ they make a profession of knowing God; but in fact they deny him, being execrably incredulous, and utter strangers to all virtue.

¹¹ For the divine savour has display'd its salutary effects to all mankind: ¹² teaching us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and to practise temperance, justice and piety in this present world;

¹⁵ take care not to deprive yourselves of the divine favour: and that no poisonous root spring up, and spread a general infection among you. ¹⁶ let there be no licentious or profane person, such as Esau, "who sold his birth-right, for a single mess."

⁸ and which the architects rejected, will be an occasion to the incredulous of their stumbling, and bruising themselves thereby:

¹⁶ men. You are free, don't let your liberty serve as a pretext for vice: but act as the servants

¹⁸ if the virtuous escape with difficulty, what will become of impious transgressors?

¹ As there were false prophets among the people of Israel, there will likewise be false doctors among you, who by introducing pernicious sects, and by renouncing the Lord, who bought them, will bring upon themselves swift destruction. ² many will follow their destructive maxims, and by their means christianity will be traduc'd. ³ By their artful discourses they will make you the tools of their avarice; but their condemnation has been a long time advancing, and their ruin is far from lingring.

⁵ since he did not spare the old world, having preserved only eight persons, including Noah, that preacher of virtue, when he brought the deluge upon the impious world: ⁶ since he condemn'd the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha to an entire subversion, and reduc'd them to ashes, to make them serve for examples to future impiety:

¹⁰ especially those, who prostitute themselves to sensual infamous passions: who despise magistrates, who being audacious, and insolent, intrepidly calumniate the higher powers;

¹⁸ when their language swells with vanity, by applying to the sensual passions of the licentious, they allure those who were escap'd for a while, from such deceivers: ¹⁹ whilst they promise others liberty, they themselves are slaves to their corrupt passions. for he that is vanquished, is a slave to the conqueror. ²⁰ As for those who have renounc'd the pollutions of the world, by their owning Jesus Christ for their Lord and saviour, if they are prevail'd upon to be entangled therein again, their last state is worse than the first. ²¹ for it had been better for them, not to have made any profession of the gospel, than after they have embraced it, to abandon the holy injunction, that was delivered to them. ²² but the proverb is exactly verified in them, "the dog is return'd to his own vomit: the sow that was wash'd, is wallowing in the mire."

⁷ but the heavens and the earth now existing are kept in store by his Logos, reserv'd for the conflagration of doomsday, when the impious shall be involv'd in perdition.

²² who is so great an impostor as he, who denies that Jesus is the Christ? he is antichrist, that denies the father and the son.

¹⁵ to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the impious among them, of all the impious actions they have committed, and of all the injurious expressions, which impious sinners have utter'd against him."

⁴ who will not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: and all nations shall come to adore thee; because thy judgments have been display'd."
