¹⁸ Now the manner of Christ's birth was this: his mother Mary being promised in marriage to Joseph, before they came together, she became pregnant by the holy Spirit.

¹ When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the reign of king Herod, certain eastern Magi came to Jerusalem, with this enquiry, ² Where is this king of the Jews who is now born? for we have seen his rising star, and are come to pay him homage.

¹⁶ and when Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water: and immediately the heavens seem'd to be parted asunder before him, and he saw the Spirit

²⁷ As Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying out, son of David, have mercy on us.

²² and there came a woman of Canaan from those quarters, and cried out to him, have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously tormented by a demon.

⁴² what think ye of Christ? whose son is he to be? they answered, David's. ⁴³ how comes it then, said he, that David by inspiration calls him Lord, in these words, ⁴⁴ " the Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?" ⁴⁵ why then does David call him Lord, if He be David's son?

³¹ you shall be now pregnant, and be delivered of a son, whom you shall name JESUS. ³² he shall be great, he shall be the son of the most high. the Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David.

⁶⁹ he hath rais'd up a powerful saviour for us, in the family of his servant David, ⁷⁰ according to the antient promise he made by the mouth of the holy prophets,

³⁰ that, as he was a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him, to place the fruit of his loins upon his throne: foreseeing this,

²² God removed Saul, and rais'd up David to be their king, to whom he gave this testimonial, " I have found David the son of Jesse: he is a man most acceptable to me, and he will execute all my orders." ²³ it is of his posterity that God, pursuant to his promise, has rais'd up Jesus to be the saviour of Israel.

³ with relation to his son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was of the lineage of David as to his body,

¹³ Besides, the promise that he should possess the world, was not made to Abraham, or to his posterity in consideration of the law, but with regard to the righteousness by faith.

⁵ who are the offspring of the patriarchs, and of whom as to the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

¹⁶ now to Abraham and his offspring were the promises made. he does not say, "to offsprings," as if he spoke of many; but as speaking of one, "and to thy offspring," which means Christ.

¹⁶ "I Jesus have sent my angel to testify these things to the churches. I am the shoot, the offspring of David, the splendid morning star.

⁸ at length he gave him the covenant of circumcision: accordingly Abraham circumcised his son Isaac eight days after he was born, Isaac was father of Jacob, who was father of the twelve patriarchs.

⁷ neither are they who are the race of Abraham, all children: but 'tis said, "in Isaac shall thy posterity be called." ⁸ that is, the children by natural descent are not thereby the children of God: but the children of the promise are alone considered as his posterity. ⁹ for the words of the promise run thus, "at this time I will come, and Sara shall have a son." ¹⁰ this appears too from the case of Rebecca, who conceived twins by our father Isaac. ¹¹ for before they were born, and had done neither good or evil, that the distinction which God had purposed to make might appear to be, not in consideration of their actions, but of his own free call, ¹² it was said to her, "the elder shall serve the younger." ¹³ as it is written, "Jacob have I loved, but Esau I have discarded."

¹⁴ since it is evident that our Lord sprang out of the tribe of Juda, to which Moses never ascribed the priesthood.

¹¹ 'Twas likewise through faith that Sara, though barren, received the power of becoming pregnant, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

¹⁷ 'Twas by faith that Abraham, when put to the trial, offered up Isaac: HE offered up his darling son, to whose posterity the promises were to be made good: ¹⁸ of whom it was said, "only the descendants of Isaac shall be counted your posterity:"

⁵ of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.

³¹ by faith Rahab having given the spies a safe reception, escap'd being destroyed with unbelievers, tho' she had led a dissolute life.

²⁵ was it not likewise for her actions, that Rahab, formerly a loose liver, was accounted as just, for having entertain'd the messengers of Joshuah, and dismiss'd them the securest way?

³ God having sent his own son invested with a body like that of sinful men, as a sacrifice for sin, thereby destroyed its power; which the law could not effect, human nature being in such a corrupted state.

²² Pilate replied, what shall I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ? they all cried out, let him be crucified.

³ is not he the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses, of Juda and Simon? are not these his sisters, who are here with us? and they were scandalized at him.

²⁷ to a virgin contracted to a man; whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. and the virgin's name was Mary.

⁴ so Joseph departed from Nazareth in Galilee, and went into Judea to the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and linage of David, ⁵ in order to be registred with Mary, his espoused wife, who was then big with child.

⁷ and being brought to bed of her first born, she swathed him, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

¹⁰ but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world. ¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

⁴⁸ when Joseph and his mother saw him, great was their surprize: and his mother said to him, son, why did you leave us thus? your father and I have been looking for you with great concern.

² in the mean time John having heard in his confinement of the actions of Christ, he sent two of his disciples to ask him,

⁴ God sent forth his own son born of a woman, and subject to the law, to redeem those, ⁵ who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

²⁶ and indeed we wanted an high priest of such a character, one that is holy, innocent, undefiled, one that is separated from sinful men, and exalted above the heavens; one who was under no necessity,

⁵ wherefore at his appearing in publick, he saith, "sacrifice and offering thou wouldst not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

²⁰ because Herod had a respect for John, knowing him to be a very honest good man, and therefore protected him; having reform'd many things upon his remonstrances, which he us'd to receive very graciously.

⁴ Moses, said they, allowed a bill of divorce, and so to dismiss her.

²⁵ At that time there dwelt at Jerusalem one Simeon, an honest, religious man, one who expected the appearance of the Messiah, and was endued with the spirit of prophecy.

⁴ they said to him, master, this woman was actually taken in adultery. ⁵ now Moses has ordain'd in the law, that such criminals should be stoned: but what is your opinion?

²² they answered, Cornelius the centurion, a man of probity and piety, one that has an universal good character among the Jews, was divinely admonish'd by an holy angel to send for you to his house, to hear what you had to say to him.

¹⁹ But after the death of Herod, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

²² but when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judea, in the room of his father Herod, he was apprehensive of going thither, till having had a divine warning in a dream, he retired into the district of Galilee:

⁵ but the angel spoke to the woman, and said, don't be frighted, I know you are seeking Jesus, who was crucified.

¹⁰ and all the congregation of the people stood praying without, at the time of offering incense, ¹¹ when there appear'd to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the incense-altar. ¹² Zacharias startled at the sight and was seized with fear. ¹³ but the angel said to Zacharias, don't be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard: and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall name John:

²³ it is of his posterity that God, pursuant to his promise, has rais'd up Jesus to be the saviour of Israel.

³⁸ know then, my brethren, it is by him, that the remission of sins is offer'd to you: ³⁹ by him, every one who believes, is purged from all that guilt, for which the law of Moses had made no such provision.

²⁵ You husband, love your spouse, even as Christ loved the church, and laid down his life for her: ²⁶ to sanctify and purify her by the ablution of his word, ²⁷ that he himself might make her appear illustrious to his own eye, a church without spot, or any thing like a defect; so as to be holy and irreprehensible.

²⁰ and having made peace by the blood of his cross, to reconcile all things to himself, both those in heaven, and those upon earth. ²¹ You then that formerly were alienated from God, and were enemies by your imaginations and wicked practices, even you has Jesus Christ now reconciled to the body of his church, ²² through his own death, to present you holy, and unblameable, and unreproveable in his own sight: ²³ provided you continue well-grounded and settled in the faith, and do not abandon that hope which has been offer'd to you by the gospel, and is proclaim'd to all mankind; of which I Paul am made a minister.

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, to redeem us from all iniquity, and qualify us to be his peculiar people, passionately affected to virtue.

²⁵ so that he has an uninterrupted power to save those, that come to God by him, because he ever lives to make intercession for them.

⁷ but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have society one with another, and the blood of his son Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin.

¹ My dear children, these things I write unto you, that ye may avoid sin. but if any man has failed, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the just. ² he is the the victim that has expiated our sins: and not ours only, but likewise the sins of the whole world.

⁵ and you know that he appear'd to abolish our sins; and that he was himself without sin.

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood, ⁶ who hath made us kings and priests to his God and father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

¹⁴ my Lord, answer'd I, you can tell. and he said to me, these are they who came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the lamb.

¹⁵ where he stay'd till the death of Herod: so that what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt have I called my son," was then fulfill'd.

²³ and went to dwell in a town called Nazareth, so that those words of one of the prophets were fulfill'd, "He shall be called a Nazarene."

¹⁷ Don't think that I am come to abolish the law or the prophets: I am not come to abolish, but to complete them.

¹⁷ whereby was fulfilled what Esaias the prophet said, "Himself took our infirmities, and bare, our diseases."

¹⁷ so that what was said by Esaias the prophet, was fulfill'd;

²¹ but having no root in him he has only an occasional faith: for as soon as any oppression or persecution arises upon account of the gospel, he presently relapses.

³⁵ so that this saying of the prophet was fulfilled, "I will talk in parables, I will utter what has been kept secret from the foundation of the world."

²² for this is the time of vengeance, when all that is writ, shall be accomplished.

⁴⁴ then he said, this is what I told you, while I was yet with you, that what has been written concerning me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, must be all accomplished.

³⁵ if the law stiles them Gods, who received the orders of God, and if the scripture is of any authortiy,

³⁸ so that the passage of Esaias the prophet was fulfilled, where he says, "Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ therefore they could not believe, according to what Esaias said in another place, "he hath blinded their eyes, ⁴⁰ and hardned their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them."

²⁵ so that the passage is fulfilled that is written in their law, "they hated me without a cause."

¹² by your authority I have kept them, during my being with them in the world: those that you gave me I have kept, and not one of them is lost, except the son of perdition: according as the scripture foretold.

⁹ so that what he said was accomplished, "of those which thou gavest me, have I lost none."

³⁶ for these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, "a bone of him shall not be broken." ³⁷ and again the scripture saith elsewhere, "they shall look on him whom they pierced."

¹⁸ but thus it is that God has accomplished what he had foretold by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer.

²⁷ as for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and their senators, by their not knowing who he was, and by condemning him, they have accomplished the declarations of the prophets, which are read every sabbath-day: ²⁸ although they could not convict him of any thing capital, yet they demanded of Pilate, that he should be put to death. ²⁹ after they had accomplished all that was written concerning him, he was taken down from the cross, and laid in a sepulchre:

¹⁷ for God hath put it in their hearts to execute his designs, in agreeing to give their kingdom to the beast, until the divine oracles shall be accomplished.

²⁰ teaching them to observe every thing which I have enjoin'd you: and be assured I shall be always with you to the end of the world.

¹⁴ The Logos became incarnate, and had his tabernacle among us, being full of grace and truth; and we contemplated his glory, such glory as the Monogenes derived from the father.

⁹ then the Lord said to Paul in a vision by night, "be not afraid, but speak, and be not silenc'd:

³ with relation to his son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was of the lineage of David as to his body, ⁴ but as to his holy spirit miraculously declared to be the son of God, by his resurrection from the dead:

⁵ upon which his mother bid the servants do whatever he should order. ⁶ now there were six cisterns of stone plac'd there for the use of the Jews in their purifications, containing two or three firkins a-piece. ⁷ these Jesus order'd the waiters to fill with water. so they filled them up to the brim. ⁸ now fill out, said he, and carry it to the steward of the feast, which accordingly they did.

¹⁴ you will be my friends, if you do what I have commanded you.

⁷ 'Twas by faith that Noah being divinely warned of unforeseen events, with a religious concern built an ark to the preservation of his family; whereby the world became inexcusable, and he obtained the reward of that righteousness which is by faith. ⁸ 'Twas by faith that he who was named Abraham, showed his obedience in travelling to a foreign country, which he was afterwards to inherit; and began his journey without knowing where he was going.

²⁴ by faith Moses when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; ²⁵ chusing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; ²⁶ esteeming the sufferings of Israel greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he had an eye to the reward. ²⁷ by faith he left Egypt without being apprehensive of the king's resentment: for he remain'd firm, as if he saw him who is invisible. ²⁸ through faith he celebrated the passover, and sprinkled blood, that the destroying angel might pass by the first-born. ²⁹ By faith they passed thro' the red sea, as by dry land: which the Egyptians attempting to do, were drowned. ³⁰ by faith they made the tour of Jericho for seven days, in consequence of which the walls fell down. ³¹ by faith Rahab having given the spies a safe reception, escap'd being destroyed with unbelievers, tho' she had led a dissolute life.

²¹ was not our father Abraham treated as just, in consequence of his actions, when he had attempted to sacrifice his son upon the altar? ²² don't you see his actions and his faith conspir'd, and that his faith had its perfect effect in his conduct? ²³ it was then, that those words of scripture were accomplished, "Abraham believed God, and he was regarded for it as a man of virtue, and was the favourite of God." ²⁴ you see then, that a man is accounted just for his actions, and not for his bare faith. ²⁵ was it not likewise for her actions, that Rahab, formerly a loose liver, was accounted as just, for having entertain'd the messengers of Joshuah, and dismiss'd them the securest way? ²⁶ as the body then without the soul is a meer carcase, so faith without its effects is lifeless.

²¹ and she shall be deliver'd of a son, to whom you shall give the name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

²⁹ for whom he before approv'd, he predispos'd to follow the example of his son, who was to conduct them all as their elder brother;
