¹ The sabbath being over, and the first day of the week beginning to dawn, Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, came to see the sepulchre. ² now there had been a great earthquake; for an angel of the lord descending from heaven, was come, and had rolled away the stone from the door, and was sitting upon it. ³ his aspect was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. ⁴ for fear of whom the keepers shook, and were almost struck dead. ⁵ but the angel spoke to the woman, and said, don't be frighted, I know you are seeking Jesus, who was crucified. ⁶ he is not here: he is risen according to his word: come, see the place where the Lord was laid. ⁷ then go immediately to tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and that, he goes before you into Galilee, there shall ye see it is him; 'tis I that say it. ⁸ And they instantly left the sepulchre, with fear and joy, and ran to carry his disciples this good news. ⁹ as they were making the way to his disciples, Jesus himself met them, and said, I salute you. and they came, and embraced his feet, and worshipped him. ¹⁰ then said Jesus to them, be not afraid: go bid my brethren repair to Galilee, and there shall they see me. ¹¹ Now when they were gone, some of the guards went into the city, and informed the chief priests of all that had happened. ¹² and when they were assembled with the senators, and had consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, thus instructing them; ¹³ do you say "his disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. ¹⁴ if this come to the governor's ears, we will appease him, and secure you." ¹⁵ so they took the money, and did as they were directed: and this report is still current among the Jews at this day. ¹⁶ In the mean time the eleven disciples went into Galilee, to a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. ¹⁷ and when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. ¹⁸ and Jesus came, and said to them, all power has been given me in heaven and in earth. ¹⁹ go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost: ²⁰ teaching them to observe every thing which I have enjoin'd you: and be assured I shall be always with you to the end of the world.

⁶¹ in the mean time Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary were sitting over against the sepulchre.

¹ When the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, after having bought aromatic drugs to embalm him, ² went to the sepulchre very early in the morning, the first day of the week, at sun-rising. ³ and they said to one another, who will remove the stone from the mouth of the sepulchre for us? ⁴ (for it was very great.) but when they were near in view, they perceiv'd that the stone was roll'd away. ⁵ upon their entring into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting towards the right, cloathed in a long white garment: at which they were frighted. ⁶ but he said to them, don't be frightned: you look for Jesus the Nazarene: he is risen, he is not here: see the place where he lay. ⁷ go, tell Peter and the rest of his disciples, that he is gone before you into Galilee: there you will see him, as he foretold you. ⁸ at this they started out, and fled from the sepulchre in a violent consternation, without speaking a word to any by the way: they were so frighted.

⁵⁶ then they went home, and provided spices and perfumes: after which they rested the sabbath-day, as the law appointed.

²² 'tis true, some women of our company threw us into a surprize: for going to the sepulchre early in the morning,

⁵¹ Immediately the vail of the temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom; the earth trembled, the rocks split, ⁵² the graves opened, and the bodies of many saints who slept arose, ⁵³ and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

² and having found that the stone had been remov'd from the sepulchre, they entred in, ³ but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. ⁴ whilst they were in great perplexity about it, all of a sudden, two men appear'd before them in robes of light. ⁵ upon which they were frightned, and bowed themselves to the very ground: but the men said to them, why do you look among the dead for one that is alive?

¹⁶ the mystery of piety is the pillar and basts of truth; and certainly most extraordinary. God has appear'd in the flesh, been justified by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaim'd to the Gentiles, believ'd by the world, and assum'd into glory.

¹² and were answer'd, that it was not they, but we, who were concern'd in the events which they predicted, events which have been now represented to you by those, whom the holy spirit from heaven inspired to preach the gospel to you: a secret which the angels desire to penetrate into.

¹⁹ THEN the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

² and was transfigured before them; his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

³ his raiment was of an exceeding bright whiteness, like that of snow, and such as no fuller upon earth could imitate.

⁵ upon their entring into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting towards the right, cloathed in a long white garment: at which they were frighted.

¹² and saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, the one at the head, the other at the feet.

¹⁰ and as they were looking stedfastly toward heaven, as he mounted up, on a sudden, two men appear'd before them robed in white, who said,

¹⁴ his head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; his feet were like fine brass, ¹⁵ when glowing in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. ¹⁶ in his right hand he held seven stars: out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and his countenance was as the sun shining in his full glory.

⁴ thou hast a few persons in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. ⁵ he that overcometh, the same shall be cloathed in white raiment; I will not efface his name out of the book of life, but I will own him before my father, and before his angels.

¹ Then I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, invested with a cloud, a rainbow was upon his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire.

¹ After this I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightned with his glory.

⁶⁵ to whom Pilate replied, you have a guard, go then, and make it as secure as you can. ⁶⁶ accordingly they went, and having clapt a seal upon the stone, they posted a guard to secure the sepulchre.

¹¹ Now when they were gone, some of the guards went into the city, and informed the chief priests of all that had happened.

³ As he was on his journey, and near Damascus, on a sudden, a light from heaven surrounded him, ⁴ and he fell to the ground, and heard a voice which said to him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? ⁵ and he said, who art thou, Lord? and the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: [it is hard for thee to kick against the goad. Then trembling with the fright Saul said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? and the Lord said to him,] ⁶ but rise, and go into the city, and you shall be told what you must do. ⁷ the mean while the men who accompany'd him, remain'd astonish'd, hearing a voice, but seeing no one.

²⁹ then having called for a light, he ran in, and with trembling fell down before Paul and Silas;

¹⁷ as soon as I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead: but he laid his right hand upon me, and said, "Fear not; I am the first and the last:

²⁷ but Jesus immediately call'd to them, take courage, said he, it is I, don't be afraid.

¹⁰ then said Jesus to them, be not afraid: go bid my brethren repair to Galilee, and there shall they see me.

⁶ but he said to them, don't be frightned: you look for Jesus the Nazarene: he is risen, he is not here: see the place where he lay.

¹² Zacharias startled at the sight and was seized with fear. ¹³ but the angel said to Zacharias, don't be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard: and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall name John:

³⁰ but the angel said to her, "Mary, be not afraid: for you are the object of divine favour.

⁵ upon which they were frightned, and bowed themselves to the very ground: but the men said to them, why do you look among the dead for one that is alive?

¹³ and they said to her, woman, why do you weep? "because, said she, they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him." ¹⁴ having thus said, she turned about, and saw Jesus standing, but knew not that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, woman, why do you weep? who do you look for? she supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, sir, if it be you that have convey'd him away; tell me where you have laid him, and I will take care to have him remov'd.

¹⁴ are not all those spirits dispatch'd as ministers to take care of those who shall belong to the christian church.

¹⁷ as soon as I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead: but he laid his right hand upon me, and said, "Fear not; I am the first and the last: ¹⁸ I am he that liveth; I was dead; but now you see I am alive for all eternity, amen; and I have the keys of the grave, and of death."

⁴⁰ for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

²¹ from that time began Jesus to let his disciples know that he should go to Jerusalem, there suffer many indignities from the senators, chief priests, and scribes, be put to death, and be raised again the third day.

⁹ As they went down the mountain, Jesus gave them this charge, don't speak of the vision, said he, to any body, till the son of man be risen again from the dead: but his disciples asked him,

²³ they will kill him, but the third day he shall be raised again. at which they were exceeding sorry.

¹⁹ and deliver him up to the Gentiles, to be insulted, scourged, and crucified: but the third day he shall rise again.

³¹ then said Jesus to them, I shall be the occasion of your revolting all from me this night: for it is written, "I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered." ³² but after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

⁶³ saying, sir, we remember that this impostor, when he was alive, said, "after three days I will rise again."

³¹ At length he began to inform them, that the son of man should suffer many indignities, be rejected by the chief priests, Scribes, and senators, be even put to death, and after three days should rise again.

⁶ he is not here, but is risen: remember what he told you, when he was yet in Galilee, ⁷ that the son of man must be deliver'd into the hands of sinful men; be crucified; and the third day rise again. ⁸ then they remembred his words;

¹² yet Peter got up, and ran to the sepulchre, where stooping down he saw nothing but the linnen lying there: upon which he went away wondring with himself at such an event.

²³ and not finding his body there, they came to tell us, that they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

⁴⁴ then he said, this is what I told you, while I was yet with you, that what has been written concerning me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, must be all accomplished.

¹⁹ Jesus answered them, saying, destroy this temple, and within three days I will raise it up.

¹⁷ therefore doth my father love me, because I lay down my life, but I shall reassume it.

⁹ and upon their return from the sepulchre, they related the whole matter to the eleven, and all the other disciples. ¹⁰ it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and others with them, who gave the apostles this relation:

²² 'tis true, some women of our company threw us into a surprize: for going to the sepulchre early in the morning, ²³ and not finding his body there, they came to tell us, that they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. ²⁴ whereupon some of us went to the sepulchre, and found matters just as the women had related; but him they did not see.

³⁴ the Lord is actually risen, and hath appeared to Simon.

²⁹ this I have told you now, before it come to pass, that when it is come to pass, ye may believe. my conversation will now be but short with you,

⁴ but these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember what I now tell you. I did not tell you so much at the beginning, because, I was then to be with you.

¹⁷ that is to say, master! Jesus said to her, touch me not: for I am not yet ascended to my father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, "I ascend unto my father and your father, even my God and your God." ¹⁸ so Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples, that she had seen the Lord, and that he had said these things to her.

¹ At length Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples upon the sea-coast of Tiberias; and the manner of his appearance was thus. ² Simon Peter, Thomas, otherwise Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples of Jesus were all together. ³ when Simon Peter said to them, I am going a fishing. they reply'd, we likewise will go with you. so they departed and went on board a vessel,; but that night they caught nothing. ⁴ as soon as it was morning, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. ⁵ then said Jesus, my lads, have ye any fish? ⁶ they answered him, no. and he said to them, cast the net on the right side of the vessel, and ye shall find. so they cast it, and it was so full of fish they were not able to draw it. ⁷ thereupon the favourite disciple of Jesus said to Peter, "it is the Lord." as soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt on his coat, (for he was stript) and threw himself into the sea. ⁸ as for the other disciples, they came in the bark dragging the net full of fish, for they were but about two hundred cubits distant from land. ⁹ assoon as they were come to land, they saw fish frying upon a fire of coals there, and bread. ¹⁰ Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish you have now caught. ¹¹ Simon Peter therefore went aboard, and drew the net to land loaded with an hundred and fifty three great fish: and notwithstanding the number, the net did not break. ¹² come, said Jesus, let us dine. but none of the disciples offer'd to ask him, who he was; for they saw well enough that it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus then advanc'd, and taking bread, he gave them some, and fish likewise. ¹⁴ this was the third time that Jesus appear'd to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead.

⁴ that he was buried, and rose again the third day, as the scriptures foretold:

⁶ after that, he was seen by above five hundred brethren at once: of whom the greater part remain alive to this day, but some are now dead.

⁸ at this they started out, and fled from the sepulchre in a violent consternation, without speaking a word to any by the way: they were so frighted.

³⁶ While they were thus talking, Jesus himself appear'd in the midst of them, and said to them, peace be with you. ³⁷ but they were in a consternation and fright, imagining, that they saw a spirit. ³⁸ upon which he said to them, why are you in this confusion? what is it, that your minds are so perplex'd? ³⁹ behold my hands, and my feet. for I am bodily present, touch me and consider me; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have: ⁴⁰ all the while holding out his hands and his feet, as he was speaking. ⁴¹ but as they were diffident of so joyful an event, and still in amaze, he said to them, have you any thing here to eat?

²⁰ verily, verily I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

²² so you are afflicted at present: but I will see you again, and then shall your hearts be affected with joy, and your joy shall no one wrest from you.

²⁰ and when he had so said, he show'd them his hands and his side. the disciples were therefore extremely glad when they saw it was the Lord. ²¹ then said Jesus to them again, "peace be with you: as my father hath sent me, even so send I you."

³³ then they that were in the ship, came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth thou art the son of God.

¹⁷ and when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

⁹ Now Jesus being risen early on the first day of the week, he appear'd first to Mary Magdalene, whom he had dispossess'd of seven demons. ¹⁰ immediately she went to those who frequented Jesus, and were then bemoaning themselves in tears, and acquainted them with it.

²⁸ the angel, upon his arrival, said to her; "Hail, favorite of heaven, the Lord is with thee: thou happiest of thy sex."

³⁸ and stood behind at his feet weeping, bath'd them with her tears, wiped them with her hair, kissed his feet, and poured the perfume upon them.

⁵² and they worship'd him, and with great joy return'd to Jerusalem,

³ but Mary taking a pound of the oil of spikenard which was very costly, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped them with her hair: so that the house was filled with the odour of the perfume.

¹⁴ having thus said, she turned about, and saw Jesus standing, but knew not that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, woman, why do you weep? who do you look for? she supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, sir, if it be you that have convey'd him away; tell me where you have laid him, and I will take care to have him remov'd. ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, Mary! she bowing her self, cry'd rabboni! ¹⁷ that is to say, master! Jesus said to her, touch me not: for I am not yet ascended to my father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, "I ascend unto my father and your father, even my God and your God."

¹⁹ The same day at evening, being the first day of the week, the doors of the house where the disciples were, being shut, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, peace be with you.

²⁸ Thomas answered, and said to him, my Lord and my God!

¹¹ Finally, brethren, be cheerful: redress yourselves, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

⁹ you shall see I will make those of the synagogue of satan, who say they are Jews, and are not, but do lye: you shall see I will make them come, and throw themselves at your feet, and they shall know that you are the objects of my love.

¹¹ Then in my vision I heard the voice of many angels which surrounded the throne, the animals, and the elders: to the number of ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; ¹² saying with a loud voice, "worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing." ¹³ and every creature which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I, saying, "blessing, and honour, and glory, and power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the lamb for ever and ever." ¹⁴ and the four animals said, amen. and the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

⁴⁸ but Jesus answered the man that told him, who is my mother? and who are my brothers? ⁴⁹ and holding out his hand towards his disciples, see there, said he, my mother, and my brothers. ⁵⁰ for whosoever shall do the will of my father, who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.

⁴⁰ and the king will reply, I declare unto you, your having done this for one of the least of these my brethren, is the same thing as doing it for me.

⁴⁵ to this he will reply, I declare unto you, your not doing this for one of the least of these, is the same thing as not doing it for me.

⁷ then go immediately to tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and that, he goes before you into Galilee, there shall ye see it is him; 'tis I that say it.

³³ He answer'd, who is my mother? who are my brothers? ³⁴ and casting his eyes round the company, there, said he, are my mother and my brothers. ³⁵ for he that does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.

⁷ go, tell Peter and the rest of his disciples, that he is gone before you into Galilee: there you will see him, as he foretold you.

²⁹ for whom he before approv'd, he predispos'd to follow the example of his son, who was to conduct them all as their elder brother;

¹¹ for both he that sanctifieth, and they who are sanctified, are all deriv'd from one: for which cause he is not asham'd to call them brethren, saying, ¹² "I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee." ¹³ and again, "I will put my trust in him." and again, "behold, I, and the children which God hath given me. ¹⁴ Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; ¹⁵ and deliver them who thro' fear of death were all their life-time in a state of slavery. ¹⁶ for he is not the deliverer of angels; but the deliverer of Abraham's posterity. ¹⁷ whence it was necessary he should be in all things like his brethren; that he might be a merciful high priest, and faithfully discharge the divine office of expiating the sins of the people. ¹⁸ for having himself stood the test of sufferings, he is capable of being moved to relieve those who undergo such tryals.

⁴ for fear of whom the keepers shook, and were almost struck dead.

³ About this time the chief priests, and the elders of the people, assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, ⁴ and consulted how to seize Jesus by surprize, and take away his life.

¹ As soon as it was day, all the chief priests and senators of the people consulted measures against Jesus how they might put him to death. ² and when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor of Judea.

⁶² Now the next day after the preparation of the sabbath, the chief priests and Pharisees went together to Pilate, ⁶³ saying, sir, we remember that this impostor, when he was alive, said, "after three days I will rise again." ⁶⁴ pray therefore order a guard to be posted at the sepulchre till the third day, for fear his disciples should come and steal him away, and then tell the people, "he is risen from the dead:" for this last imposture would be of worse consequence than the first.

⁴⁷ upon this the chief priests and the Pharisees being assembled in council, said, what shall we do? for this man performs many miracles.

¹⁰ for the chief priests had resolved to put even Lazarus to death; ¹¹ because he was the occasion that many of the Jews left them, and believed on Jesus.

⁵ On the morrow, the rulers, senators, and doctors of the law, then at Jerusalem, assembled, ⁶ with Annas the high priest, Caiphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the pontifical family. ⁷ and having caused Peter and John to appear, they asked, by what influence, or by what authority have you done this? ⁸ then Peter filled with the holy spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people, and senators of Israel, ⁹ since we are this day to be examined about the cure of a cripple, and by what means he was recovered; be it known to you all, ¹⁰ and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you entirely recover'd. ¹¹ this is the stone which was rejected by you builders, but is become the chief of the angle. ¹² salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved. ¹³ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were illiterate, and of the lower rank of men, they were surpriz'd; but tho' they knew that they had been Jesus's disciples, ¹⁴ yet seeing the man who was cured standing with them, they could not tell what to reply. ¹⁵ having therefore order'd them to withdraw from the council, they conferred among themselves, ¹⁶ saying, what shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ but to prevent its spreading any further among the people, let us charge them with threats not to speak for the future to any man in that name. ¹⁸ so they called them in, and commanded them not to speak or teach upon any account, in the name of Jesus. ¹⁹ but Peter and John made answer, do you yourselves judge, whether it be right in the sight of God, to obey you rather than God. ²⁰ for we cannot avoid publishing what we have seen and heard. ²¹ so when they had further threatned them, they let them go, not finding it practicable to punish them, because of the people, who all glorified God for that which was done. ²² for the man who was so miraculously cured, was above forty years old.

³³ When they heard that, they were so enraged, they consulted to take away their lives. ³⁴ when a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of law, who was respected by all the people, rose up in the council, and moved the apostles might withdraw for some time.

⁴⁰ after the apostles were called in, and scourged, they charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then releas'd them. out they went from the council,

⁶⁴ Jesus reply'd, I am: moreover I declare to you, within a while ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of God, and coming on the clouds of heaven.

² and when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor of Judea.

¹⁹ Herod having caus'd diligent search to be made, without being able to find him, after examining the guards, he order'd them to execution. after which he departed from Judea, and went to Cesarea, where he resided.

¹⁵ and said, what will ye give me, and I will deliver him to you? and they promised him thirty pieces of silver.

⁸ for this reason the field is called the field of blood to this day.

¹⁰ which some having obtain'd, have revolted from the faith, and brought upon themselves variety of piercing pains.

¹⁴ afterwards he appear'd to the eleven, as they were all sitting at table, and he reproved them for their incredulity and obstinacy in not giving credit to those, who had seen him after his resurrection.

⁷⁰ Jesus answered them, have I not chosen you all twelve, and yet one of you is an avowed enemy?

¹³ When they were arrived there, they went up into an upper room, where Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alpheus, Simon the Zelot, and Judas the brother of James used to resort, ¹⁴ and unanimously persevere in prayer with the women, Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brethren being present. ¹⁵ At that time the disciples being assembled, to the number of about an hundred and twenty, Peter rose up in the midst of them, ¹⁶ and said, men and brethren, the prediction which the holy ghost made, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was guide to those that seiz'd Jesus, must have been accomplished. ¹⁷ he was of our number, and shared in the functions of this ministry. ¹⁸ but after he had purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity, he fell down, his belly burst, and all his bowels gushed out: ¹⁹ a fact so generally known to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that they called the field in their tongue, Aceldema, that is to say, the field of blood. ²⁰ for it is written in the book of psalms, "let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein:" and "let another take possession of his charge." ²¹ wherefore of those who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus convers'd among us, ²² from his baptism by John, to the day of his assumption, we should chuse one to be a witness with us of his resurrection. ²³ accordingly they presented two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was sirnamed Justus, and Matthias. and they prayed, ²⁴ saying, "thou Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show us which of these two thou hast chosen, ²⁵ that he may be admitted to this apostolick ministry which Judas abandoned, to go to his own place." ²⁶ and having drawn lots; the lot fell upon Matthias, who was added to the eleven apostles.

¹⁵ yea, and we are no better than enthusiastic impostors by affirming that God raised up Christ, when he never did raise him up.

²⁸ I declare unto you, some are here present, who shall not die, till they have seen the son of man enter into his kingdom.

⁹ as they were making the way to his disciples, Jesus himself met them, and said, I salute you. and they came, and embraced his feet, and worshipped him.

²³ that all men should honour the son, even as they honour the father. he that honoureth not the son, honoureth not the father who hath sent him.

²⁷ my father has instructed me in every thing: and no one knoweth the son, except the father: nor does any one know the father, except the son, and he to whom the son is pleased to reveal him."

³² he shall be great, he shall be the son of the most high. the Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David. ³³ he shall reign over the house of Jacob, and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

²² the management of every thing is committed to me by my father: no one knows what character the son is invested with, except the father; nor who the father is, except the son, and he to whom the son shall please to reveal it.

³⁵ the father loveth the son, and hath given all things into his hand.

²² besides, the father judgeth no man; but hath committed the full power of judging unto the son: ²³ that all men should honour the son, even as they honour the father. he that honoureth not the son, honoureth not the father who hath sent him. ²⁴ I declare unto you, he that heareth my doctrine, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. ²⁵ I declare unto you, the time is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God: and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ for as the father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the son, to have life in himself; ²⁷ and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the son of man.

³ though he knew that the father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and was going to God,

² for thou hast given him power over all men, that he might give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

³⁶ therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

³⁶ this was what he communicated to the children of Israel, proclaiming salvation by Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all mankind.

⁹ for to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

²⁷ for he hath subjected all things to him. but when it is said all things are subjected, it is plain that he is to be excepted, who did subject all things to him.

²⁰ which he exerted in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at the head of his heavenly kingdom, ²¹ far above all the principalities, all the powers, all the potentates, all the dominations, and whatever order can be named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come: ²² for he has subjected all things to him, and constituted him supreme head of the church,

⁹ wherefore God has highly exalted and given him a name, which is above every name; ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus both angels and men, the living and the dead, should pay their adorations, ¹¹ and that every nation should confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, to the glory of God the father.

¹⁶ for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are on earth, both visible and invisible, the thrones, and the sovereigntys, the principalitys, and the powers: all were created by him, and for him: he is before all things, ¹⁷ and by him all things consist. ¹⁸ he himself is the head of the church, which is his body. he is the prince, the first-born from the dead, that in all things he might be chief. ¹⁹ for it seemed good to the father to inhabit the whole body of the church by Christ:

¹⁰ and ye are filled by him, who is the chief of all principality and power:

² whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also be made the world.

⁸ thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet." now since he has put all in subjection to him, he left nothing that is not subjected to him. however we do not see as yet that all things are put under him.

²² who being ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God, where angels, dominations, and potentates have been subjected to him.

¹⁵ The seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, crying, "the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."

¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them.

¹⁶ on the mantle about his thigh was this inscription, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

¹⁶ and when Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water: and immediately the heavens seem'd to be parted asunder before him, and he saw the Spirit ¹⁷ of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: at the same time a voice was heard from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

⁵² they reply'd, yes, Lord. then said he to them, thus every teacher who is instructed in the doctrine of the gospel, is like the master of a family, who taketh out of his treasure things new and old.

¹⁵ Then he said to them, go ye into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel to all mankind. ¹⁶ he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned.

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ you are witnesses of these things.

⁸ but ye shall receive the influence of the holy spirit, which will descend upon you: and ye shall be witnesses for me, in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

³⁸ Peter replied, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy spirit. ³⁹ for the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

⁴¹ then they that embraced his doctrine, were baptized: and there were about three thousand converts made that very day.

¹² but when they had embraced the doctrine of Philip, concerning the kingdom of the Messias, and the authority of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. ¹³ nay, Simon himself became a proselyte: and after he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and was transported at the sight of the miracles and prodigies which he perform'd. ¹⁴ Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem, heard that the Samaritans had embraced the word of God, they sent Peter and John, ¹⁵ who upon their arrival, prayed for them that they might receive the holy spirit. ¹⁶ (for as yet he had not descended on any of them: they having only been baptized in the name of the Lord

³⁶ as they pursued their journey, they came to a place of water: and the eunuch said, see, here is water; what should hinder my being baptized? ³⁷ [and Philip said, if you believe with all your heart, you may. and he answered, I do believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God.] ³⁸ so he order'd the charioteer to stop: and they went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

¹⁸ immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he recover'd his sight; upon which he instantly arose, and was baptized.

⁴⁷ then Peter said, can we refuse the water of baptism to such as have received the holy spirit as well as we? ⁴⁸ so he directed they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. after which they desired him to stay some time with them.

⁴⁶ but Paul and Barnabas told them boldly, you indeed were the first, to whom the word of God was to be preach'd: but since you reject it, and judge your own selves unworthy of eternal life, be assur'd, we shall make the same offer to the Gentiles: ⁴⁷ for thus has the Lord commanded us, "I have appointed you to be a light to the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the remotest parts of the earth."

²¹ After they had preach'd the gospel in that city, and made many disciples, they retook the road to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch,

¹⁵ so that having been baptized with her family, she made us this request, if you think me sincere in my profession, pray come and lodge at my house; and she prevail'd upon us. ¹⁶ One day as we went to the oratory, we happen'd to meet a slave, who had the spirit Python, and was very gainful to her masters by telling of fortunes. ¹⁷ as she followed Paul and the rest of us, she cried out, these men are the servants of the most high God, who show you the way to salvation. ¹⁸ this she did for several days, till Paul tir'd with it turn'd about, and said to the spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ I command you to quit her; and instantly he came out. ¹⁹ her masters finding they had lost such a prospect of gain, seized upon Paul and Silas, and hawl'd them to the publick place before the magistrates. ²⁰ having presented them to the Officers, they said, these men, who are Jews, raise great disorders in our city, and preach such maxims, ²¹ as it is not lawful for Romans, as we are, to admit or practise. ²² upon this the populace rose upon them, and the Officers order'd them to be stript and scourg'd. ²³ after they had been severely lash'd, they were thrown into prison, the jayler being charg'd to keep them safe. ²⁴ in consequence of this order he thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. ²⁵ At midnight Paul and Silas went to prayers, and sang praises to God, which the other prisoners heard: ²⁶ when all of a sudden there was such a great earthquake, that the foundations of the prison were shaken: immediately all the doors opened, and the setters dropp'd from the prisoners. ²⁷ the jayler waking, and seeing the prison-doors open, drew his sword, designing to dispatch himself from the apprehension that the prisoners had escaped. ²⁸ but Paul call'd to him aloud, and said, do thy self no harm, for we are all here. ²⁹ then having called for a light, he ran in, and with trembling fell down before Paul and Silas; ³⁰ and bringing them out, he said, sirs, what must I do to be saved? ³¹ believe, said they, on the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you, and your family. ³² then they declared the word of the Lord to him, and to all his family. ³³ at the same time of night he washed their stripes, and immediately he was baptized, he, and all that belong'd to him.

³ what baptism then, said he, did you receive? they replied, the baptism of John. ⁴ upon which Paul said, John indeed administer'd the baptism of repentance, but with this admonition, that they should believe in him, who was to come after, that is, in Jesus the Messias. ⁵ when they heard this, they were initiated by baptism into the christian profession.

²⁸ take notice therefore, that the offers of divine salvation are sent to the Gentiles, and they will receive them.

³ don't you know that when we were all baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, we were plunged into a state figurative of his death. ⁴ therefore we are buried with him by being plunged into a sort of death: that as Christ was raised up from the dead into a state of glory with the father, even so we also should proceed to a new state of life.

¹⁸ I reply, have they not heard? on the contrary, "their voice spread thro' all the earth, and their words to the remotest inhabitants thereof ."

¹³ and I of Christ." is the school of Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptized into the name of Paul? ¹⁴ I thank God, I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius: ¹⁵ lest any should say, I had baptized into mine own name. ¹⁶ true, I baptized the family of Stephanas: but I don't know that I baptized any other besides.

⁴ Now there are different gifts, but the same spirit. ⁵ and there are different offices, but the same Lord. ⁶ and there are different operations, but it is the same God who performs them all in every one.

²⁹ If it be not so, what can they effect who are baptized for the dead? if the dead rise not at all, why are they then baptized for the dead?

¹⁴ the favour of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communication of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. amen.

²⁷ for as many of you as have been baptized into christianity, have been invested as christians.

¹⁸ for thro' him both of us have access by the same spirit to the father.

²³ provided you continue well-grounded and settled in the faith, and do not abandon that hope which has been offer'd to you by the gospel, and is proclaim'd to all mankind; of which I Paul am made a minister.

²¹ thus baptism, which corresponds to the deluge, does now save us, not as it is a cleansing from external filth, but as it is an engagement to lead a divine life, from the belief of the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

⁷ There are three witnesses in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three testify the same thing.

⁴ JOHN to the seven churches which are in Asia: favour and peace be with you from him WHO IS, WHO WAS, WHO WILL BE; and from the seven spirits who are before his throne; ⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood, ⁶ who hath made us kings and priests to his God and father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

²³ a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," that is to say, God our Saviour.

¹³ and let us not be left under temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

²⁴ therefore, whoever heareth these instructions of mine, and puts them in practice, I will compare him to the prudent man, who built his house upon a rock: ²⁵ the rain descended, the floods came, the winds blew, and beat upon that house: but it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock. ²⁶ but every one that heareth these instructions of mine, and practiseth them not, shall be compared to a fool who built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ the rain descends, the flood rushes on, the winds blow, and beat upon the house: down it falls, and wide are its ruins.

³⁹ the enemy that sowed them is the devil: the harvest is the conclusion of the age: and the reapers are the angels. ⁴⁰ as then the tares are gathered and burnt in the fire; so shall it be at the conclusion of the age.

⁴⁹ so it shall be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and after they have separated the wicked from the just,

²⁰ for where two or three are assembled in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

³ And when he was upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came to him in private, and said, tell us when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of this age?

²⁰ as for the disciples, they went and preached the gospel in all parts: the Lord co-operating with them, and confirming their doctrine by the miracles that accompany'd it.

¹⁸ I will not leave you orphans; I will come again to you. ¹⁹ yet a little while, and the world shall see me no more: but ye shall see me: because I shall live again, and ye shall live also. ²⁰ then shall you know, that I am in my father, and you in me, and I in you. ²¹ he that hath received my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me, shall be beloved by my father, and I will love him, and shew my self unto him. ²² Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, why Lord, will you show your self to us, and not to the world? ²³ Jesus answered him, he that loves me, will observe my precepts: and my father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

⁴² they continued stedfastly in the apostolical doctrine of a community, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

⁹ then the Lord said to Paul in a vision by night, "be not afraid, but speak, and be not silenc'd: ¹⁰ (since I am with thee, and no man shall lift up his hand so as to hurt thee:) for my people in this city are numerous."

²⁰ that I have conceal'd nothing that might be useful to you, but have inform'd you of it, and instructed you therein, both in publick and in private: ²¹ remonstrating both to Jews and Gentiles the advantages of a sincere repentance, and of believing

²⁷ for I have acquainted you with the whole dispensation of God without reserve.

² now I commend you, brethren, for remembring all my orders, and for keeping the rules I delivered to you.

²³ For I received it from the Lord, and I inform'd you of it: that the Lord Jesus, the night in which he was betrayed, took bread:

³⁷ if any one pretends to be a prophet, or to spiritual gifts, let him be assured that the rules which I have here prescrib'd, are the commandments of the Lord.

¹¹ It is he then that made some, apostles: some, prophets: some, evangelists: and others, pastors, and teachers: ¹² thus fitly qualifying his servants for their respective offices, in order to build up the body of Christ: ¹³ till being united in a perfect belief, and acknowledgment of the son of God, we grow up to that full state of maturity required by Christ: ¹⁴ that we should be no longer children, fluctuating, and carried about with every empty doctrine, by men vers'd in sleight and the crafty arts of deceit: ¹⁵ but being sincere in mutual love, may be entirely united to Christ, who is the head: ¹⁶ from which the whole body fitly framed, and compacted by the entire adherence and contribution of every part performing its respective function, increases and improves itself by the mutual concern of the parts. ¹⁷ This I say therefore, and conjure you by the Lord not to live for the future as other Gentiles do, in the vanity of their minds,

²⁰ but you have learned other things from Christ, ²¹ if you have heard of him, and have been taught the truth as he preach'd it: ²² to quit the vicious habits of your former conversation, corrupted by deceitful passions: ²³ and to be renewed in your mind, by living like men formed anew, ²⁴ after the image of God, in justice, sanctity, and truth. ²⁵ Wherefore leave off the practice of lying, and let every man speak truth to his neighbour: for we are all members of one society. ²⁶ are you angry? have a care you don't sin. "let not the sun go down upon your wrath," ²⁷ lest the devil take hold of the opportunity. ²⁸ let him that stole, steal no more: but rather let him labour, to encrease his fortune with his own hands, that he may have wherewithal to relieve the needy: ²⁹ let no obscene language defile your mouth, use only such as tends to edification, that it may be beneficial to the hearers. ³⁰ grieve not the holy spirit of God, by whom you are sealed against the day of deliverance: ³¹ banish all resentment and indignation, anger, vehemence, detraction, and every thing like malice. ³² be mutually kind, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

²⁸ he it is that we preach, exhorting, and instructing men in every part of divine knowledge, that they may all be perfectly acquainted with the doctrine of Christ Jesus.

¹ Finally, my brethren, we intreat and conjure you by the Lord Jesus Christ, to observe the instructions we gave you about your religious conduct, and to make continual progress therein. ² for you know the precepts we gave you in the name of the Lord Jesus.

⁶ We direct you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to withdraw from all those of your brethren, whose conduct is irregular, and not agreeable to the instructions they received from us. ⁷ for you know what an example we have given for your imitation: that our conduct among you was regular: ⁸ that we did not eat any man's bread for nothing: but with toil and fatigue work'd night and day to avoid being chargeable to any of you: ⁹ not, that we had no just claim, but to present ourselves as a pattern, which you should imitate, ¹⁰ pursuant to the maxim, which we laid down, when among you, "he that refuses to work should be deny'd food." ¹¹ now being inform'd, that there are among you people of an irregular conduct, who neglect their own business, and busy themselves with the affairs of others: ¹² we command these persons, and exhort them by the Lord Jesus Christ, to stay at home, and earn their bread by labour.

¹ Let those who are in a state of servitude, consider the entire respect due to their masters, that the name of God, and the doctrine of the gospel may not be blasphemed. ² let them not treat their christian masters, on pretence of being their brethren, with less respect: but be the more obsequious, because they are believers, and deserve to be belov'd, for the kind provision they make for them. let this be the subject of your instructions, and exhortation. ³ If any one deviate from this doctrine, not adhering to the wholesome instructions of our Lord Jesus Christ, the true doctrine of piety, ⁴ he is full of pride and ignorance, touch'd with a spirit of chicanery and wrangling, productive of envy, contention, calumny,

¹⁷ however the Lord assisted and strengthen'd me, that the gospel might be confirm'd by my remonstrance, and all the nations might hear it; so that I was deliver'd out of the mouth of the lion:

¹ As for you, teach nothing ² but what is agreeable to sound doctrine: advise the aged to be prudent, grave, temperate, sound in faith, ³ in charity, in patience: the aged women likewise, to behave with sanctity of manners, not false accusers, not given to tipling, ⁴ but to lectures on virtue, that they may teach the young women prudence, to love their husbands, ⁵ to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, good oeconimists, beneficent, submissive to their husbands, ⁶ that the word of God may not be blasphemed. the young men likewise exhort to be modest. ⁷ In all things show yourself a pattern of virtue: in teaching shewing uncorruptness, ⁸ gravity; let your doctrine be sound and inoffensive, that your opponents may be ashamed, and have nothing that is ill to say of us. ⁹ Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters, to be ¹⁰ entirely obsequious without grumbling. not to pilfer, but to show the strictest fidelity; that they may do honour to the doctrine of God our saviour in all things.

¹⁰ of darkness into his marvellous light: you, who formerly were not a people, but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy, ¹¹ but at present have obtain'd it. I exhort you, my dear brethren, as strangers and travellers to avoid all sensual passions, as destructive to your ¹² souls. Let your behaviour among the Gentiles be virtuous, that instead of inveighing against you as vicious, they may observe your honest behaviour, ¹³ and glorify God in the times of distress. be subject therefore, for the Lord's sake to every human establishment: whether it be to the king, ¹⁴ as supreme; or to governors, as being deputed by him to punish those who do ill, ¹⁵ and to encourage those who do well. for such is the divine pleasure, that by your good conduct you obviate the cavils of inconsiderate ¹⁶ men. You are free, don't let your liberty serve as a pretext for vice: but act as the servants ¹⁷ of God. Be respectful to all, love your brethren, fear God, and honour the king. ¹⁸ You that are servants, be subject to your masters with all reverence: not only to such as are kind and gentle, ¹⁹ but even to the morose. for it is a recommendation to the divine favour, to suffer unjust persecution

⁵ Do you on your part employ all your care in adding to your faith, fortitude: to fortitude, knowledge: ⁶ to knowledge, temperance: to temperance, patience: to patience, piety: ⁷ to piety, fraternal affection: and to fraternal affection, universal benevolence. ⁸ for if you are possess'd of these virtues and improve therein, they will prevent the knowledge you have of our Lord Jesus Christ from being useless to others, and unprofitable to yourselves. ⁹ but he that is destitute of them is blind or short-sighted, having forgot he was purified from his past sins. ¹⁰ Wherefore be the more diligent, my brethren, to secure your vocation and election by your virtuous actions, for by so doing, you will never relapse: ¹¹ and thus you will have a free admittance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

² by admonishing you to be mindful of the predictions of the holy prophets, and of the directions of the apostles of our Lord and Saviour.

³ if we keep his commandments, that is a proof that we know him. ⁴ he that says, he knows him, and does not keep his commandments, is a lyar, and an enemy to the truth:

¹⁹ Hereby we shall know that we are true professors, and set our consciences securely at rest. ²⁰ for if our conscience condemn us, God knows us better than we do our selves, he knoweth all things. ²¹ beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we may securely confide in God. ²² whatever we ask, we shall receive it of him, because we keep his commandments, and do what is agreeable to him. ²³ now this is his commandment, that we believe in his son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, as he commanded us. ²⁴ he that observes his commandments, dwelleth in God, and God in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the spirit which he hath given us.

¹⁸ I am he that liveth; I was dead; but now you see I am alive for all eternity, amen; and I have the keys of the grave, and of death."

¹⁴ blessed are they who wash their robes, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

²⁰ he who testifieth these things, saith, "I come quickly." Amen. even so, come, Lord Jesus. ²¹ the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
