¹ and there appeared a great wonder in heaven, a WOMAN invested with glory like the sun: the moon was under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: ² she was with child, and cried in her labour with the pangs of her delivery. ³ And there appeared another wonder in heaven, it was a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. ⁴ his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born. ⁵ and she brought forth a man-child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up to be with God, and about his throne. ⁶ but the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her maintenance, during a thousand two hundred and threescore days. ⁷ Then there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; on the other side fought the dragon with his angels: but these were defeated, ⁸ they lost their place in heaven: ⁹ the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him. ¹⁰ then I heard a loud voice, which cry'd in the heaven, "the time of salvation, and power, the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ are now come: for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, is cast down. ¹¹ they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last. ¹² therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. WO to the land, and to the sea: for the devil is come down unto you, in great rage, because he knows that his time is but short." ¹³ The dragon then finding that he was precipitated to the earth, persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man-child. ¹⁴ but to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place, where she is to be maintain'd for a time, and times, and half a time. ¹⁵ and the serpent spouted from his throat a flood of water, after the woman, in order to drown her with the flood. ¹⁶ but the earth helped the woman, for the earth opened its jaws, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon threw out of his throat, ¹⁷ which so enrag'd the dragon against the woman, that he went to make war with the rest of her race, who keep the commandments of God, and bear testimony to Jesus.

³⁸ Then certain of the Scribes and of the Pharisees said, master, we should be glad you would shew us some miracle.

³⁰ then shall that sign, the son of man in the clouds of heaven, appear: and all the tribes of the land shall mourn, and they shall see the son of man coming in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.

²⁵ the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

¹¹ great earthquakes, and famines, and pestilences shall happen in divers places: terrible appearances and surprizing prodigies shall be in the heavens.

²⁵ there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars: and upon the earth distress of nations under confusion, the sea and the waves roaring.

²⁹ the bridegroom is he that hath a right to the bride: as for the friend of the bridegroom, who is nigh his person and heareth him, he greatly rejoyces at the voice of the bridegroom: upon this account my joy is compleat.

¹⁹ and I will shew prodigies in the heavens, and signs on the earth; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke.

²² that divine justification, which by faith in Jesus Christ is extended to all, that believe; for there is no distinction:

¹⁴ but imitate the Lord Jesus Christ, and by no means indulge any sensual desires.

² for I am jealous over you with religious jealousy: since I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

²⁷ for as many of you as have been baptized into christianity, have been invested as christians.

¹⁴ but far be it from me that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world is as contemptible to me, as I am to the world.

²⁵ You husband, love your spouse, even as Christ loved the church, and laid down his life for her: ²⁶ to sanctify and purify her by the ablution of his word, ²⁷ that he himself might make her appear illustrious to his own eye, a church without spot, or any thing like a defect; so as to be holy and irreprehensible.

³² these words contain a very mystical sense, I mean in reference to Christ and the church.

¹¹ For the divine savour has display'd its salutary effects to all mankind: ¹² teaching us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and to practise temperance, justice and piety in this present world;

²⁰ the conceal'd meaning of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and of the seven golden candlesticks, is this: the seven stars signify the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which you saw, signify the seven churches.

¹⁹ THEN the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

³ And there appeared another wonder in heaven, it was a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

¹ I saw another prodigy in heaven, great and marvellous, SEVEN ANGELS, having the seven last plagues, for by them the divine vengeance is consummated.

¹⁴ the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the names of the twelve apostles of the lamb.

²³ the city had no need either of the sun, or of the moon to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamb is the luminary thereof.

²¹ a woman when she is in travail, is afflicted at the approach of her pains: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, the remembrance of her anguish, is lost in her joy, that a man is born into the world.

¹⁹ my dear children, how am I in pain, till Christ be formed in you?

²⁷ for it is written, "rejoice thou barren, that bearest not; break out into loud acclamations, thou that hast not the travels of childbirth, for more are the children of the desolate, than of her that hath an husband."

⁴ his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born.

⁹ the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him.

¹⁷ which so enrag'd the dragon against the woman, that he went to make war with the rest of her race, who keep the commandments of God, and bear testimony to Jesus.

¹³ and I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

³ so he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads, and ten horns. ⁴ and the woman was arrayed in purple, and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abominable impurities of idolatry.

⁷ and the angel said to me, wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystical meaning of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

⁹ the meaning is very comprehensive. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. ¹⁰ they likewise signify seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; when he comes, he will continue but a short space.

¹² the ten horns which you saw, are ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings for a while with the beast.

¹⁶ the ten horns which you saw upon the beast, they shall hate the whore, they shall plunder, and strip her, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

¹² his eyes were as a flame of fire, on his head were many crowns: and a name inscrib'd which no one comprehended, but himself:

² and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil and satan, and bound him for a thousand years,

³ when king Herod heard these things, he was alarm'd, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ and having assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he enquired of them where Christ was to be born. ⁵ they answered him, in Bethlehem of Judea: for these are the words of the prophet; ⁶ "And thou Bethlehem in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor that shall rule my people Israel." ⁷ Then Herod having privately sent for the Magi, enquired of them the exact time when the star appeared. ⁸ and he sent them to Bethlehem, go, said he, make an exact enquiry about the young child, and when ye have found him, let me know it, that I too may come and pay my adorations to him. ⁹ in obedience to the king, they departed, and immediately the star which they saw in the east, moved on before them, till it came to the place where the infant was, and then stood still. ¹⁰ when they observ'd this of the star, they were extreamly well pleas'd. ¹¹ and entring into the house, they saw the infant with Mary his mother, and prostrating themselves, they worshipped him: then opening their treasures, they presented him with gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. ¹² but being divinely warn'd in a dream, not to go back to Herod, they returned into their own country another way. ¹³ When they were gone, an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, take the infant and his mother, flee into Egypt, and don't stir thence till I order you, for Herod will endeavour to have the child destroy'd. Joseph therefore arose, ¹⁴ took the infant and his mother by night, and fled into Egypt: ¹⁵ where he stay'd till the death of Herod: so that what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt have I called my son," was then fulfill'd. ¹⁶ Then Herod perceiving he was abused by the Magi, was full of indignation, and sent a detachment who slew all the children that were in Bethlehem and its territory, being under the age of two years, according to the limited time he had learnt of the Magi.

⁴⁴ you, who have the devil for your father, will execute the designs of your father: he was a murderer from the beginning, and deserted the truth, since he has no love for the truth: when he lyes, he speaks like himself: for he is a lyar, and the father of a lyar.

⁸ Be temperate, be vigilant: for your adversary the Devil goes about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

⁷ the first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, which fell upon the earth: and a third part of the earth, and a third part of the trees was burnt up, and all the green grass.

¹⁰ they had stings in their tails like scorpions; and they had leave to molest men for five months with their stings.

¹⁹ for the power of these horses is in their mouths, and in their tails: for their tails were like serpents, and had heads, with which they do mischief.

¹⁸ and the woman which you saw, is that great city, which reigns the empress of the kings of the earth.

²⁵ but did not cohabit with her as a wife, before she had-brought forth her first-born son; whom he named JESUS.

¹⁹ Now after the Lord had convers'd with them, he was assum'd up to heaven, where he sat on the right hand of God.

² I knew a christian who above fourteen years ago, was snatch'd up even to the third heaven, whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knows.

²⁶ he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: ²⁷ he shall rule them with a rod of iron: as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers, according to the power I have received of my father.

¹² then they heard a great voice from heaven, saying to them, "come up hither." and they ascended up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies beheld them.

¹⁵ out of his mouth went a sharp sword, in order to smite the nations: for he shall rule them with an iron sceptre: and tread the wine-press of the fierce vengeance of almighty God.

¹¹ whereupon the devil left him, and immediately angels came and ministred unto him.

² but don't measure the court which is without; for it is given to the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they trample under foot two and forty months. ³ by virtue of my power, my two witnesses shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days cloathed in sackcloth.

¹⁴ but to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place, where she is to be maintain'd for a time, and times, and half a time.

⁵ there was given to him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemy; and power was given to him for two and forty months.

⁴¹ the son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all that make others offend, and those who do iniquity;

²⁷ for the son of man shall come in the glory of his father, with his angels; and then shall be make retribution to every man according to his works.

³¹ and he shall send his messengers, who with the shrill sound of a trumpet, shall gather together his select from the four winds, from one end of the heaven to the other.

⁴¹ then will he say to those on the left, depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

⁵³ do you think my father, if I should now desire it of him, would not instantly send me more than twelve legions of angels?

⁷ and lest I should be exalted above measure by the extraordinary revelations I have had, I was afflicted in my person, so that the messenger of satan insulted me; concerning which,

¹² for our conflict is not barely with men, but with principalities, with potentates, with the princes of darkness, with wicked aereal spirits.

⁷ and that you, who are distress'd, should obtain your repose, together with us, when the Lord Jesus, with his angels, the ministers of his power, shall descend from heaven,

¹⁰ For it was agreeable to his wisdom, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to consecrate the author of their salvation by his sufferings.

⁴ for since God did not spare the angels, who had sinned, but having precipitated them to hell, confin'd them to chains of darkness, where they are reserv'd for judgment:

⁹ whereas Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil, he disputed about the body of Moses, did not take the liberty to inveigh against him, but said, "the Lord rebuke thee."

³ And there appeared another wonder in heaven, it was a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. ⁴ his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born.

⁷ he was permitted to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all the tribes, and provinces, and nations.

¹¹ Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse appear'd; and he that sat upon him was called the faithful and the true: in righteousness he judges and makes war: ¹² his eyes were as a flame of fire, on his head were many crowns: and a name inscrib'd which no one comprehended, but himself: ¹³ he had a vesture dipt in blood: and his name is called, the logos of God. ¹⁴ and the armies of heaven followed him upon white horses, cloathed in fine linnen, white and clean. ¹⁵ out of his mouth went a sharp sword, in order to smite the nations: for he shall rule them with an iron sceptre: and tread the wine-press of the fierce vengeance of almighty God. ¹⁶ on the mantle about his thigh was this inscription, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. ¹⁷ I saw likewise an angel standing upon the sun; and he cryed with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, "come and gather your selves together to the supper of the great God; ¹⁸ that ye may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses, and of those that ride on them, the flesh of all that are free, and all that are slaves, both small and great." ¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

¹⁸ and I tell thee likewise, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will hereafter build my church: and death shall not prevail against it.

²⁵ that he may be admitted to this apostolick ministry which Judas abandoned, to go to his own place."

³¹ What shall we conclude then from this? if God be for us, who can be against us? ³² he that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all, will he not with him likewise freely give us all things? ³³ who shall plead against God's elect? shall God who justifieth them? ³⁴ who shall condemn them? shall Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, and makes intercession for us? ³⁵ what shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or penury, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ for as it is written, "for thy sake we are sacrificed every day; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter:" ³⁷ yet after all we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. ³⁸ for I am fully persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, ³⁹ neither the high, nor the low, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God by Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁶ and the angels which kept not their original dignity, but deserted their proper abode, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness, to the judgment of the great day.

¹¹ they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last.

¹ Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil:

⁵ then the devil took Jesus with him to Jerusalem, and having set him on the wing of the temple, he said to him,

⁸ Again, the devil accompanyed him up a very high mountain, and representing to him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them: all these things,

¹⁰ Then said Jesus to him, get thee hence Satan: for it it written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve ."

³⁹ the enemy that sowed them is the devil: the harvest is the conclusion of the age: and the reapers are the angels.

²⁴ for there shall arise false Messiahs, and false prophets, and shall shew such astonishing miracles and prodigies, as to deceive, if that can do it, the very converts themselves.

¹² by the beaten road is meant, they who only hear: the word, by the lurking wiles of the devil, being hinder'd from taking root in their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

¹⁸ upon which he said to them, I beheld satan falling, like lightning, from heaven.

¹⁶ and must not this daughter of Abraham, whom satan has held bound these eighteen years, be disengag'd from this bond, on a sabbath-day?

³ now satan had inspired Judas surnam'd Iscariot, one of the twelve, what to do.

³¹ Then said Jesus, Simon, Simon, satan has demanded to shake you, and my disciples, like wheat in a sieve.

³¹ now is this world condemn'd: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

³⁰ for the prince of the world is coming:

¹¹ of judgment, because the prince of this world is condemn'd.

³ upon which Peter said, Ananias, how could satan inspire thine heart to lye to the holy ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

¹⁸ and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and partake of the inheritance of the saints, by believing on me."

¹⁸ for such as these serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own selfishness; and by flourish and flattery, deceive the open-hearted simple.

²⁰ the God of peace will soon bruise Satan under your feet. the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

¹¹ witness) lest satan should have got some advantage of us: for we are apprized of his artifices.

⁴ to those unbelievers, whose minds the God of this world has so blinded, that the glorious lustre of the gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, does not enlighten them.

³ but I fear lest by some means or other, as Eve was beguiled by the subtilly of the serpent, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is due to Christ.

¹⁴ and no wonder; for satan himself may put on the appearance of an angel of light.

¹⁴ that we should be no longer children, fluctuating, and carried about with every empty doctrine, by men vers'd in sleight and the crafty arts of deceit:

³ don't be led into any mistake, because the previous rebellion does not yet appear, nor the man of sin throw off the disguise, that offspring of perdition:

⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies, ¹⁰ and with all the vile methods of imposture, to the ruin of those, who are averse to the truth, by which they might be saved. ¹¹ wherefore God will suffer a spirit of delusion to work them into the belief of a lye:

¹⁴ Adam was not seduc'd, but the woman, who was the cause of his transgression.

⁶ nor must he be a new convert; for fear he should be elated with pride, and so involve himself in the same ruin as the devil. ⁷ besides, he ought to stand fair in the opinion of unbelievers, lest he fall into disgrace, and the ambushes of the accuser.

¹³ as for these impious impostors, they will go on from bad to worse, seducing others, and deluding themselves.

¹⁴ Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

⁸ he that lives in sin, imitates the devil; for the devil was a sinner from the beginning. for this purpose the son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil. ⁹ whosoever is born of God, does not commit sin; for the divine principle remaineth in him: he will not sin, because he is born of God. ¹⁰ In this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: he that does not practise virtue, and fraternal benevolence, is not of God.

¹⁹ we know that we are the children of God, and the rest of the world are subject to the evil spirit.

⁹ "I know thy works, thy tribulation and poverty (tho' thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of satan.

¹³ I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where the throne of satan is: thou maintainest my name, and hast not renounced your faith in me, even at a time when Antipas my faithful martyr was slain among you, where Satan dwells.

²⁴ but I say to the rest that are in Thyatira, who do not follow this doctrine, and have not been initiated in the depths, as they are called, of satan, I will put upon you no other burden, but what you have:

⁹ you shall see I will make those of the synagogue of satan, who say they are Jews, and are not, but do lye: you shall see I will make them come, and throw themselves at your feet, and they shall know that you are the objects of my love.

¹ And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

²⁰ As for the rest of the men who were not killed by these plagues, they did not repent of their evil actions, so as to forbear worshipping demons, and idols of gold and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk:

⁷ Then there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; on the other side fought the dragon with his angels: but these were defeated,

¹⁴ and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive.

¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty.

² and he cried with a strong voice, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the abode of demons, the dungeon of every foul spirit, and a cage of every impure ill-boding bird.

²³ the lamp shall no more be lighted in thee; the bridal-song shall be heard there no more: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; all nations were seduc'd by thy enchantments.

²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

² and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil and satan, and bound him for a thousand years, ³ then cast him into the bottomless pit, there shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should seduce the nations no more, till the thousand years should he fulfilled: and after that, he was to be loosed for a short time.

⁸ and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea.

¹⁰ the devil that seduced them, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

¹⁰ thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

⁶⁴ Jesus reply'd, I am: moreover I declare to you, within a while ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of God, and coming on the clouds of heaven.

¹⁸ and Jesus came, and said to them, all power has been given me in heaven and in earth.

² he said therefore to them, when ye pray, say, "our father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. thy kingdom come. thy will be done, on earth, as in heaven.

⁴ that is, when you are assembled, and I virtually there, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

⁹ but he said to me, "my favour is sufficient for thee: for my strength is shown to be perfect by thy weakness." with pleasure therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may be seen to dwell in me.

³ in charity, in patience: the aged women likewise, to behave with sanctity of manners, not false accusers, not given to tipling,

²⁶ he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

¹⁰ They cried with a loud voice, "salvation from our God who sits upon the throne, and unto the lamb.'

¹⁵ The seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, crying, "the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."

¹ And after these things I heard a great voice of a numerous multitude in heaven, saying, "alleluia; salvation, glory, honour, and power unto the Lord our God: ² for just and right are his judgments; for he hath condemned the grand prostitute, who corrupted the earth with her licentiousness, and hath avenged the blood of his servants that were shed by her hand." ³ again they said, "alleluia." and her smoke. rose up for ever and ever. ⁴ Then the four and twenty elders, and the four animals fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, "amen; alleluia." ⁵ and a voice came out of the throne, saying, "praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great." ⁶ and I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, which was like the sound of many waters, or like a volley of thunder, saying, "alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent does reign." ⁷ let us rejoyce, and triumph, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the lamb is come, and his spouse is already adorn'd.

²⁶ and said, he that can't abandon his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, nay, even his own life, cannot be my disciple.

³³ these things I have appriz'd you of, that ye might repose your confidence in me. the world shall give you trouble: but take courage, I have overcome the world.

²⁴ things that little affect me, nor is life so much my concern, as to finish my course, and the charge I receiv'd from the Lord Jesus, to attest the declaration of the divine favour.

¹³ but Paul replied, what do you mean by afflicting me thus with your tears? I am not only ready to meet my chains, but even to die at Jerusalem, for the name of the Lord Jesus.

⁵⁷ but thanks be to God, who has given us the victory, thro' our Lord Jesus Christ.

³ for tho' I am involv'd with the world, I don't sustain the war with their poor arts: ⁴ our military arms are not so defective, but divinely effectual to demolish all their ramparts; ⁵ to level all the barriers they contrive for obstructing the divine doctrine, and to make their pride captive to the authority of Christ.

¹³ wherefore invest yourselves with the set of divine armour, that ye may be able to withstand in the difficult day, and having overcome all to maintain your ground. ¹⁴ stand firm, the belt of truth round your waist, let justice invest you like mail: ¹⁵ wing your feet with the gospel of peace: ¹⁶ cover all with the shield of faith, to repel all the fiery darts of the adversary: ¹⁷ let salvation be your helmet, and the divine doctrine your spiritual sword. ¹⁸ Pour out your souls unto God upon all occasions, watching in prayer with all perseverance and supplication for all christians:

⁷ I have struggled in a glorious cause: I have finish'd my career: I have stood to the faith: ⁸ I have nothing more to do, but to receive the crown of virtue reserv'd for me, which the Lord, the just judge, will give me in that day: and not only to me, but to those also, who have long'd for his appearance.

¹⁴ Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; ¹⁵ and deliver them who thro' fear of death were all their life-time in a state of slavery.

³⁵ women recovered their children, tho' dead, by their being raised to life again: some expired under torments, refusing to be delivered; that they might obtain a better deliverance at the resurrection. ³⁶ others suffer'd cruel indignities and scourgings, besides chains and imprisonment. ³⁷ they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandred about in sheepskins, and goat-skins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented: ³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy) they wandred in desarts, and in mountains, having no retreat but the dens and caves of the earth.

¹³ I write to you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked spirit. I write to you, little children, because ye have known the father. ¹⁴ I write to you, fathers, because you have known him that is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked spirit.

⁴ ye are of God, my dear children, and you have overcome them: because he that is in you, is superior to him that is in the world.

⁵ Who is it that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the son of God?

² who publish'd the divine message, and gave his attestation to every thing that he saw concerning Jesus Christ.

⁹ I JOHN, who am your brother, and partake in the tribulation, in the reign, and in the patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony I gave of Jesus Christ.

⁷ he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith to the churches, to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of my God."

¹⁰ fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. ¹¹ he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith to the churches, he that overcometh, shall not be hurt by the second death."

¹⁷ he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches: to him that overcometh, will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man understands, except he that receives it."

⁵ he that overcometh, the same shall be cloathed in white raiment; I will not efface his name out of the book of life, but I will own him before my father, and before his angels.

¹² him that overcomes, will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out no more: I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which descends from heaven from my God: even my new name will I write.

²¹ to him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my father in his throne.

⁹ When he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they maintain'd.

¹⁰ They cried with a loud voice, "salvation from our God who sits upon the throne, and unto the lamb.' ¹¹ and all the angels who stood round about the throne, and about the elders, and the four animals fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying, amen: ¹² praise, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might be to our God for ever and ever. amen. ¹³ Then one of the elders spake, and said to me, who are those that are arrayed in white robes? and whence do they come? ¹⁴ my Lord, answer'd I, you can tell. and he said to me, these are they who came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the lamb.

⁷ when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.

¹⁷ which so enrag'd the dragon against the woman, that he went to make war with the rest of her race, who keep the commandments of God, and bear testimony to Jesus.

¹ THEN I looked, and I saw a lamb on mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his name and his father's name writ on their foreheads. ² and I heard a voice from heaven, which was like the noise of many waters, or like a great thunder-clap: I heard too a sound like that of a harp, when touch'd by the hand of a musician. ³ and a new song was sung before the throne, and before the four animals, and the elders: and no one could learn that song, but the hundred forty four thousand, who were ransom'd from the earth. ⁴ these are they who were not defiled with women: for they are virgins: these are they who follow the lamb wherever he goes: these were ransom'd from among men, being the first fruits unto God, and to the lamb.

² and I saw as it were a sea of glass, mingled with fire; and those that had been victorious over the beast, and over his image, and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, with their divine harps in their hands. ³ and they sung the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the lamb, saying, "great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou king of ages.

¹⁰ then I fell at his seet to worship him: but he said to me, "forbear: I am the servant of God, as you and your brethren are, that bear testimony to Jesus: worship God: for to give testimony to Jesus, is the very design of prophecy."

⁴ I saw likewise thrones, where persons were seated, to whom the power of judging was given: and I saw the souls of those that were beheaded for the testimony they had given to Jesus, and for the word of God, who had not worshipped the beast, nor his image, nor had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

¹⁴ "glory to God in the heavens, and to men on earth felicity in the divine favour."

¹⁰ even so, I assure you, the angels in heaven rejoice, when any one sinner becomes a penitent.

³⁷ only wait but a little while, and he that is to come, will come without delay.

⁸ But there is one thing, my brethren, you ought to be appriz'd of, which is this, that "with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

¹³ then I beheld, and heard an eagle flying thro' the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, wo, wo, wo to the inhabitants of the earth, by reason of the sound of the trumpets which the other three angels are yet to sound.

¹² One wo is past, and now two woes are to follow.

⁶ and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created the heaven and all that is therein, the earth and all that is therein, the sea and all that is therein, "that the time should be no longer defer'd."

¹⁰ the inhabitants of the land will rejoice, and triumph over them, they will send presents to one another; because the two prophets had gall'd the inhabitants of the land.

¹⁴ the second wo is past, and behold, the third wo soon follows.

²⁰ O heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets, triumph at her ruin, since God hath avenged you on her.

³ And there appeared another wonder in heaven, it was a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. ⁴ his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born. ⁵ and she brought forth a man-child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up to be with God, and about his throne. ⁶ but the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her maintenance, during a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

³ so he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads, and ten horns.

¹⁵ Then he said to me, the waters which you saw, where the prostitute has her seat, are the people, the multitude, nations, and provinces.

²⁰ teaching them to observe every thing which I have enjoin'd you: and be assured I shall be always with you to the end of the world.

¹ As for me, my brethren, when I appear'd among you, it was not to represent to you the divine mystery in sublime language, and with human literature.

³ if we keep his commandments, that is a proof that we know him.

² by this we may know that we love the children of God, if we love God, and keep his commandments.

¹⁰ he that believeth on the son of God, hath the testimony of God thereto: he that does not believe God, impeaches his veracity, because he does not believe the testimony that God gave of his son.

¹¹ they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last. ¹² therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. WO to the land, and to the sea: for the devil is come down unto you, in great rage, because he knows that his time is but short."

¹² here is the patience of the saints, who keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

⁶ and I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondred with great admiration.

¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them.

¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

⁸ and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea. ⁹ they will spread on the surface of the earth, and encompass the camp of the saints, and the beloved city: and fire shall descend from God out of heaven, and devour them.

¹⁴ blessed are they who wash their robes, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."
