¹⁴ blessed are they who wash their robes, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

²¹ Not every one that says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but only they who do the will of my Father who is in heaven. ²² many will cry out to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? have we not cast out devils in thy name? and in thy name have we not wrought many miracles? ²³ and then will I make this declaration to them: I never knew you: depart from me ye that have practised iniquity. ²⁴ therefore, whoever heareth these instructions of mine, and puts them in practice, I will compare him to the prudent man, who built his house upon a rock: ²⁵ the rain descended, the floods came, the winds blew, and beat upon that house: but it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock. ²⁶ but every one that heareth these instructions of mine, and practiseth them not, shall be compared to a fool who built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ the rain descends, the flood rushes on, the winds blow, and beat upon the house: down it falls, and wide are its ruins.

³⁷ happy those servants, whom the master at his arrival shall find thus watching: I assure you, he shall gird himself, and make them sit at table, and will come to serve them. ³⁸ happy are the servants he finds in such a state, whether it be at the second or at the third watch of the night, when he comes.

¹² are you wiser than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, as well as his children, and cattle?

⁷ Jesus therefore subjoin'd, I declare unto you, I am the door of the sheep-fold.

⁹ I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved; he shall go in and out, and find pasture.

⁶ Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man can come to the father, but by me.

¹⁵ if ye love me, keep my commandments.

²¹ he that hath received my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me, shall be beloved by my father, and I will love him, and shew my self unto him. ²² Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, why Lord, will you show your self to us, and not to the world? ²³ Jesus answered him, he that loves me, will observe my precepts: and my father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

¹⁰ your love to me will be in keeping my commandments: even as I love my father by keeping his commandments. ¹¹ These things have I spoken to you, that you might have some present comfort, and that hereafter your joy might be compleat. ¹² this is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you. ¹³ there cannot be greater love than that of a man, who lays down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ you will be my friends, if you do what I have commanded you.

¹⁹ circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, in comparison of obeying the divine commands.

⁹ but take care that this liberty of yours does not prove a scandal to the weak.

⁵ have not we the liberty to take a christian woman with us in our travels, as well as the rest of the apostles, as the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas did?

⁶ for in the christian-dispensation, neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision, but an active benevolent faith.

³ he that hath such an expectation should purify himself, even as he is pure.

²³ now this is his commandment, that we believe in his son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, as he commanded us. ²⁴ he that observes his commandments, dwelleth in God, and God in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the spirit which he hath given us.

³ for our love of God consists in the observation of his precepts: precepts that are far from being grievous.

⁷ he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith to the churches, to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of my God."

¹⁴ my Lord, answer'd I, you can tell. and he said to me, these are they who came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the lamb.

¹² her walls were large and high; the gates were twelve; and at the gates twelve angels, with the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel inscrib'd thereon.

²⁷ and nothing that is impure, no one that is guilty of any abomination, or a lye, shall ever enter there: but they alone who are written in the lamb's book of life.

² in the midst of the area, surrounded by the river, was the tree of life, which had twelve fruit-seasons, yielding its fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

⁷ I shall soon come: happy is he that attends to the prophecies of this book."
