²¹ what benefit had you then in those things whereof you are now ashamed? since they terminated all in death.

¹⁷ at length coming to himself, how many, said he, does my father keep in pay, who have bread in abundance, whilst I am dying here with hunger? ¹⁸ I will depart, and go to my father, and say to him, father, I have sinned against heaven, and against thee; ¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called your son: treat me as one of your hir'd servants. ²⁰ so he departed and went to his father. but while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him, and mov'd with compassion, ran and threw himself upon his neck, and kissed him. ²¹ then the son said to him, father, I have sinned against heaven, and against you, I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

³² who knowing the divine rule of right, did not perceive that they who commit such things are worthy of death, and not only they who do the same, but they who give countenance to those that do them.

²³ for the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁵ for when we were in the carnal state of the law, the sinful passions of that state set our animal faculties to work in the service of death.

⁶ now sensual inclinations lead to death; but spiritual affections to a life of tranquillity.

¹³ for if you lead a sensual life, you will be miserable: but if through the spirit you mortify the affections of corrupted nature, you will be happy.

¹¹ 'tis observable, even this religious sorrow which you had, what solicitude has it not wrought in you, what apologies, what indignation, what fear, what desire, what zeal, yea, what revenge! so that by your whole conduct, ye have shown your selves to be clear from guilt in this matter.

⁷ be not deceived, God will not be mocked: for what a man soweth, that shall he also reap: ⁸ he that soweth to his vices, shall reap the deadly fruit of his vices; but he that sows to the spirit, shall of the spirit reap everlasting life.

¹⁹ who in the. end will be ruin'd, who place their religion in sensuality, their glory in that which is their shame, and fix their thoughts upon this earth.

⁸ but that which bears thorns and briars, is look'd upon as lying under a curse; whose end will be to be burnt.

²⁹ don't you think then that he deserves a much greater punishment, who hath despised the son of God, and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith be was sanctified, to have been justly shed, thereby offering an indignity to the spirit of grace?

¹⁵ and the genuine offspring of sin is death.

²⁰ that the retrieving of a sinner from his erroneous habits, is saving a soul from ruin, and cancels a multitude of sins.

¹⁷ for now is the time when God will begin his judgments with his own church. now if he begins with us, what will the conclusion be to those who do not obey the divine gospel?

²⁸ adhere to that, my dear children, that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

⁶ for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it."
