¹ And the yeare folowynge aboute the tyme that kynges go oute a warre fare, Ioab caryed out the armye of the host, and destroied the countrey of the chyldren of Ammon, and went and beseged Rabah, and destroyed it. But Dauid boade at Ierusalem whyle Ioab smote Rabah, and destroyed it. ² And Dauid toke the croune of their kynge of his heade, and founde therin the wayght of a talent of goulde, & there were preciouse stones in it, and it was set on Dauids head. And he brought out also the spoile of the cytye, whiche was exceading much: ³ & he brought oute the people that were in it, and tamed them with sawes and harowes of yron & with brakes, and so dealt Dauid wyth all the cytyes of the children of Ammon. And Dauid, and all the people came agayne to Ierusalem. ⁴ After that there arose warre at Gazer wyth the Philistines. At whych tyme Sobocai the Husathite slue Saphai, that was of the chyldren of Raphaim, & they were subdewed. ⁵ And there was battell again wyth the Philistines, and Elhanan the sonne of Iair slue Lahemi the brother of Goliath the Gethite, whose speare was lyke the beam of a weuer. ⁶ And there chaunsed yet agayne warre at Geth, where was a man of a syze with .xxiiij. fingers & toes, six on euery hand, & syx on euery fote, & was the sonne of Haraphah & defyed Israel. ⁷ And Iehonathan the sonne of Samaa Dauids brother slue him. ⁸ These were borne of Haraphah at Geth, and were ouerthrowen by the hande of Dauid and of hys seruauntes.

¹¹ For only Og king of Basan remayned of the remnaunt of the geauntes: behold, his yron bed is yet at Rabah among the children of Ammon .ix. cubytes longe & .iiij. cubites brode, of the cubites of a man.

¹ And it came to passe in the begynning of a new yeare, in the tymes when kinges are wont to go forth to battell, that Dauid sent Ioab & his seruauntes with him & all Israell. And they destroyed the children of Amnon, & beseged Rabah. But Dauid taryed styll at Ierusalem.

¹⁶ And as Ioab beseged the cytye, he assygned Vrias vnto a place where he wist that strong men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the cytye came oute & fought with Ioab. And there were certen ouerthrowen of the people and of the seruauntes of Dauid, and Vrias the Hethite dyed also. ¹⁸ Then Ioab sent and tolde Dauid all the processe of the warre, ¹⁹ and charged the messengers, saying: when thou hast made an end of tellynge the storye of the warre vnto the king ²⁰ yf he begynne to fume & saye vnto the: wherfore approched ye so nye vnto the cytye to fyght? wyst ye not that men wold hourle and shote from the walles? ²¹ who smote Abimelech sonne of Ierobeseth? dyd not a woman caste a pece of a mylstone vpon hym from of the walles, that he dyed in Thebes? why then went ye nye the walles, then saye thou? thy seruaunt Vrias the Hethite is dead also. ²² And the messengers went and came & shewed Dauid all that Ioab had sent hym with, ²³ and sayde vnto Dauid: the men preuayle agaynst vs, and came out vnto vs into the feld, & we stacke vnto them, euen vnto the entering of the gate. ²⁴ And the shoters shotte from the walles, and some of the seruauntes of the king be dead. And thy seruaunt Vrias the Hethite is dead also. ²⁵ Then sayde Dauid vnto the messenger, thus wyse saye vnto Ioab, let not the thyng trouble the. For the swerde deuoureth one as well as another: make thy battell more stronge agaynste the cytye, and destroye it, & se that thou courage Ioab.

²⁶ And as Ioab fought agaynst Rahab the cytye of the chyldren of Amnon he toke the kynges toure, ²⁷ and sent messengers to Dauid saying: I haue made assaute to Rabah, & also haue taken the castell from whence they had theyr water. ²⁸ Now therfore gather the reste of the people together, and come and besege the cytie and take it: leste yf I take it, the victorye be ascrybed to me. ²⁹ And Dauid gathered all the people together, and went to Rabah and assauted it and gat it. ³⁰ And he toke the kinges croune from of hys heade whiche wayed an hundred wayght of golde, and was set wyth precious stones. And Dauid ware it on hys head. And he brought out the spoyle of the cytye in excedyng great aboundaunce. ³¹ And he brought oute the people that was therein and sawed them and drue harowes of yron vpon them, and shred some of them with shredynge knyues of yron, & thrust some into fornaces. And so he serued all the cyties of the children of Ammon. And then Dauid and all the people returned vnto Ierusalem.

²⁷ And when Dauid was come to Mahanaim, Sobi the sonne of Naah out of Rabath the cyty of the children of Ammon, and Machir the sonne of Amiell out of Lodaber and Berzelai the Galaadite out of Rogelim,

²² Then there came a Prophete to the kinge of Israel, and sayde to him: go forth and play the man, be wyse & take hede what thou doest for when the yeare is about, the kinge of Siria will come against the agayne.

²⁶ And as sone as the yeare was aboute, Benhadad nombred the Siriens and went vp to Aphek to warre wyth Israel.

²⁰ When Eliseus was dead, and buryed, the soudyars of the Moabites came into the lande, the yeare folowyng.

¹¹ Then spake I: Lorde, howe longe? he aunswered: vntyll the cytyes be vtterlye without inhabytours, and the houses wythoute men, tyll the lande be also desolate, & lye vnbuylded.

¹⁶ Beholde, I make the smyth that bloweth the coales in the fyre, & he maketh a weapen after hys handy worck. I make also the waster to destroye:

² Beholde therfore, the tyme commeth (sayeth the Lorde) that I wyll brynge a noyse of warre into Rabah of the Ammonites. Lahell shalbe desolate, and her cytyes brente vp: and the Israelytes shall be Lordes ouer those that had them in possession afore, sayeth the Lord. ³ Hesebon shall mourne, for it shall be roted out of the grounde, sayeth the Lorde. The cytyes of Rabah shall crye oute, and gyrde them selues wyth sacke clothe: they shall mourne, and runne aboute the walles: for theyr kynge shal be led awaye presonner: yea hys priestes and princes wyth hym.

²⁰ Make the a strete, that the swerde maye come towarde Kabath of the Ammonites, and to the stronge cytye of Ierusalem.

⁵ As for Rabath. I will make of it a stall for camels, and of Ammon a shepefolde: & ye shal knowe, that I am the Lord.

¹⁴ Therefore I wyl kyndle a fyre in the walles of Rabbath that shal consume her palaces: with a great crie, in the daye of batel, in tempest & in the daye of storme,

¹¹ And them also kynge Dauid dyd dedicate vnto the Lorde wyth the syluer and gold that he consecrated of all nacyons whiche he subdued: ¹² of the Syryans, the Moabytes, the chyldren of Ammon the Phylystines, the Amaleckites, and of the spoyle of Adadezer sonne of Rehob kynge of Zobah.

¹¹ And king Dauid dedicated them also vnto the Lord wt the syluer & goulde that he brought from all nacyons, from the Edomites, from the Moabites, from the children of Ammon, from the Philistines, & from the Amalechites.

¹⁴ and made theyr lyues bytter, vnto theym, wyth cruell laboure in clay and brycke, and all maner worcke in the fyeldes, and in all maner of seruice, whyche they caused theim to worcke cruellye.

²³ and nowe therfore cursed be you, and there shall not cease to be of you, bond men and hewers of woode & drawers of water vnto the house of my God.

⁶ And the Lordes of Socoth sayd: are the handes of Zebath & Zalmona now in thyne handes that we shuld geue bread vnto thy company. ⁷ And Gedeon sayde, therfore when the Lorde hath deliuered Zebath and Zalmona into myne hand I wyl teare the flesh of you wyth the thornes of the wyldernes & wyth breers.

¹⁶ And he toke the elders of the cytie, and thornes of the wyldernesse & breers, and al to tare them therewyth. ¹⁷ And he brake doune the toure of Phanuel, and slewe the men of the cytye.

³¹ And he brought oute the people that was therein and sawed them and drue harowes of yron vpon them, and shred some of them with shredynge knyues of yron, & thrust some into fornaces. And so he serued all the cyties of the children of Ammon. And then Dauid and all the people returned vnto Ierusalem.

²¹ the chyldren of the sayde nacyons that were lefte in the lande, because the chyldren of Israel were not able to destroy them, dyd Salomon make trybutaryes vnto thys day.

² Then said Dauid: I wil shewe kindnesse vnto Hanon the sonne of Nahas because hys father dealt kyndlye wyth me. And thervpon Dauid sent messengers to comforte hym ouer the death of hys father. And when the seruauntes of Dauid were come into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanon to comforte him, ³ the Lordes of the chyldren of Ammon sayd to Hanon: thynkest thou that Dauid dothe honoure thy father in thy syghte, that he hath sent comforters vnto the? Naye, but it is to searche & ouerthrowe, & to spye oute the lande, that hys seruauntes be come vnto the. ⁴ Whervpon Hanon toke Dauids seruauntes & shaued them, & cut of their cotes harde by their bottockes, & sent them awaye. ⁵ And there went that tolde Dauid how the men were serued. And the kynge sent to mete them (for the men were exceadyngly ashamed) & sayd: tarye at Iericho, vntyll youre beardes be growen, and then returne.

⁸ Let all thyne enemyes fele thy hande: let thy right hande fynde out all theym that hate the. ⁹ Thou shalt make them like a fyry ouen in tyme of thy wrath: the Lorde shall destroye them in hys displeasure, and the fyre shal consume them.

¹² The Kynge of Eglon, The Kynge of Gazer,

³ and goeth doune westwarde, euen to the coastes of Iaphlethi, & vnto the coastes of Bethhoron the nether, & so to Gasor, & the endes of their coastes came to the sea.

¹⁵ And the Philistines had yet agayne warre with Israel. And Dauid went doune and his seruauntes with hym, and fought with the Philistines. And Dauid waxed fayntie,

¹⁸ And there was yet after this battel with the Philistines at Nob, in whiche Sobochai the Husathite slew Saph of the sonnes of Haraphah. ¹⁹ And there was yet the third battel in Gob, with the Philistines, where Elhanan the sonne of the Iaere Orgim, a Bethlehemite slue one Goliath a Gethite: the staffe of whose speare was a great as a weauers cloth beame. ²⁰ And there was yet battel in Geth, where was a man of a size and had on euery hande .vi. fyngers, and on euery fote .vi. toes .xxiiij. in al. And was also of the kinred of Haraphah ²¹ and defyed Israel. And Ionathas the sonne of Samach the brother of Dauid slue hym: ²² These foure were the sonnes of Haraphah in Geth, and were ouerthrowen by the hande of Dauid & by the handes of his seruauntes.

²⁹ Sobacai the Husathite, Ilai the Ahohite:

⁴ And then came a man and stode in the myddes, out of the tentes of the Philistines named Goliath of Geth syxe cubytes and an handbredeth longe,

⁷ And the shaft of hys spere was like a weauers beame. And hys speare heade weyed syx hundred sykles of yron. And one bearynge a shylde went before hym.

⁹ Then the priest answered: the swerde of Goliath the Philistine whom thou sluest in Ocdale, that is here wrapt in a cloth behynde the Ephod. Yf thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no nother saue that here. And Dauid sayde: there is none to that, geue it me.

¹⁰ whyche asked councel of the lorde for him and gaue him vitayles, and the swerde of Goliath the Philistine also.

⁹ Then Isai made Samah come, and he sayde: nether yet hath the Lord chosen hym.

¹⁰ And the Philistine said: I haue defyed the host of Israel thys daye geue me a man and let vs fyght together.

²⁶ Then spake Dauid to the men that stode by and sayde: What shalbe done to the man that beateth thys Philistine, and taketh awaye the shame from Israel? for what is this vncircumcysed Phylystyne, that he shoulde reuyle the hoste of the lyuynge God?

³⁶ For bothe a Lyon and also a Beare hath thy seruaunt slayne. And this vncircumcysed Philistine shalbe as one of them, for hys railing on the hoste of the lyuyng God.

¹³ And Isai begat hys eldest sonne Eliab, and Abinadab the seconde, and Samaa the thirde,

²³ But thou Sennaherib, whom hast thou defyed & blasphemed? And agaynst whom hast thou lyfted vp thy voyce, & exalted thy proude lokes? euen agaynst the holy one of Israel.

¹² Now therfore geue me thys mountayne, whyche the Lorde at that tyme promysed, for thou herdest at that tyme, how the Enakims were there, and how the cytyes were greate & walled. I trust the Lord wylbe wyth me, and I shal dryue them out as the Lorde sayd.

¹¹ So I turned me vnto other thynges vnder the Sonne, and I sawe, that in runnyng, it helpeth not to be swift: in battayll, it helpeth not to be stronge, to fedynge, it helpeth not to be wyse: to ryches, it helpeth not to be suttell: to be had in fauoure, it helpeth not to be cunnynge: but that all lyeth in tyme and fortune.

²³ Moreouer, thus sayeth the Lorde: Let not the wyse man reioyse in his wisdome, nor the stronge man in hys strength, neyther the ryche man in hys ryches:

³¹ What shall we then say vnto these thynges? yf God be on oure syde: who can be agaynste vs?
