¹ Then came Dauid to Nob to Ahimelech the pryest. And Ahimelech was astonied at his coming and said vnto him: Why comest thou thy self alone, and noman wyth the? ² And Dauid saide to Ahymelech the preast: the kinge hath commaunded me to do a certeyne thynge and sayde vnto me, let no man knowe where aboute I sende and what I haue commaunded the to do. And therefore I haue apoynted my seruauntes to suche and suche places. ³ And now what hast thou vnder thyne hande? geue me fyue loues of bread, or what cometh to hande. ⁴ And the pryest answered Dauid and sayd: there is no comen bread vnder myne hande, but there is halowed bread, yf the young men, had abstayned only from wemen. ⁵ And Dauid answered the pryest and sayde vnto him: of a truth wemen hath bene locked vp from vs about a thre dayes, when I came out, and the vesselles of the young men were holy. Howe be it thys waye is vnpure, but it shalbe halowed in the vessel. ⁶ And so the pryest gaue hym halowed bread, for there was no nother bread there saue shew breades that were taken from before the Lord, to put freshe bread there the day that it was taken away. ⁷ And there was there the same day a certen man of the seruauntes of Saul abydynge before the Lorde named Doeg an Edomite, the chefest of Sauls hearde men. ⁸ And Dauid sayde vnto Ahimelech: is not here vnder thine hande other speare or swerde? for I haue nether brought my swerde nor myne harnes wt me, because the kinges busines required hast. ⁹ Then the priest answered: the swerde of Goliath the Philistine whom thou sluest in Ocdale, that is here wrapt in a cloth behynde the Ephod. Yf thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no nother saue that here. And Dauid sayde: there is none to that, geue it me. ¹⁰ And Dauid arose and fled the same daye from the presence of Saul, and went to Achis the Kynge of Geth. ¹¹ And the seruauntes of Achis sayde of hym: is not this Dauid the king of the lande? dyd they not synge vnto this felowe in daunses sayinge: Saul hath slayne hys thousand, and Dauid hys ten thousand? ¹² And Dauid put those wordes into hys hert & was sore afrayed of Achis the king of Geth. ¹³ And he chaunged hys contenaunce before them and raued in theyr handes, and scrabled on the dores of the gate, and let hys spyttel fal doun vpon hys bearde. ¹⁴ Then sayde Achis vnto his seruaunt. Lo, ye saw that this man was besyde hym selfe, wherefore then haue ye brought hym to me? ¹⁵ lacke I madde men, that ye haue brought this felowe to playe the mad man in my presence? he shall not come into my house.

³ And Ahiah the sonne of Ahitob Iehabodes brother, the sonne of Phinehes, the sonne of Eli, was the Lordes priest in Siloh & bare an Ephod. But the people wyst not that Ionathas was gone.

⁴ And Samuel dyd as the Lorde bad him. And when he came to Bethlehem, the elders of the towne were astonyed at hys coming, and sayde: Betokeneth thy comynge peace?

⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which had the ouer sight of the seruauntes of Saul and sayde: I sawe the sonne of Isai, when he came to Nob, to Ahimelech the sonne of Ahitob, ¹⁰ whyche asked councel of the lorde for him and gaue him vitayles, and the swerde of Goliath the Philistine also. ¹¹ Then the king sent to calle Ahimelech the pryest the sonne of Ahitob, and all hys fathers house, that is to saye, the pryestes that were in Nob. And they came all to the kinge. ¹² And Saul sayde: heare thou sonne of Ahitob. And he sayde: here I am my Lorde. ¹³ Then sayde Saul to hym: why haue ye conspyred against me, thou and the sonne of Isai, in so muche that thou hast geuen hym vitayle and a swerde, and hast asked councell of God for him, that he shoulde aryse against me, and lye awayte as it is come to passe thys daye. ¹⁴ And Ahymelech answered the kynge & sayde: who is so faythfull amonge all thy seruauntes as Dauid & therto the kinges sonne in lawe, and goeth at thy bidding, and is had in honoure in thyne house? ¹⁵ haue I thys daye begonne fyrst to aske councel of God for him? God forbyd that from me: let not the kynge put suche a thinge vnto hys seruaunt and on all the house of my father. For thy seruaunt knoweth nothinge of all thys, ether lesse or more. ¹⁶ But for all that the kynge sayd: thou shalt surely dye Ahimelech, bothe thou and all thy fathers house. ¹⁷ Then sayde the kynge vnto his fote men that stode about hym: turne and sley the priestes of the Lorde, bothe because their hand is with Dauid, and because they knewe when Dauid fled & shewed it not to me. But the seruauntes of the kynge woulde not moue their handes, to runne vpon the priestes of the Lorde. ¹⁸ Then saide the kinge to Doeg: turne thou and smyte the pryestes. And Doeg the Edomite turned and ranne vpon the priestes and slue that same daye foure skore and fyue persones that dyd weare eche man a lynnen Ephod. ¹⁹ And Nob the citie of the pryestes he smote with the edge of the swerde, bothe man and woman, chylde and suckelynge, with oxe asse and shepe.

³² And at Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,

³² yet shall he remayne at Nob that daye. After that, shall he lyft vp his hande agaynst the mount of Sion, and against the hyll of Ierusalem.

²⁶ Howe he went into the house of God in the dayes of Abiathar the hye prieste, and dyd eate the halowed loues, which is not lawfull to eate, but for the priestes onely: and gaue also to them, whiche were with hym?

²⁰ But Isaac sayd vnto his sonne: how commeth it that thou hast found it so quickely my sonne? He answered. The Lord thi God brought it to my hande.

²⁴ And he axed him: art thou my sonne Esau? And he said that I am.

¹⁷ Then sayd Saul to Michol: why hast thou mocked me so, and sent awaye myne enemy that he is escaped? And Mychol answered Saul: he saide vnto me, let me go, or elles I wil kyl the.

²² And Dauid sayde vnto Abiathar: I wist it the same daye, that Doeg the Edomite whyche was there would tell it Saul. And I am cause of the death of all the soules of thy fathers house.

¹⁸ And the olde Prophet sayde vnto hym: I am a prophet as wel as thou, and an angel spake vnto me with the worde of the Lorde saying: bring hym agayne with the to thyne house, and let hym eate breade and drincke water, & yet lyed vnto hym.

²⁹ Take fro me the waye of lyeng, and graunte me thy lawe.

¹² For yer that certayne came from Iames, he eate with the Gentyls. But when they were come, he withdrue and separated hym selfe, fearyng them which were of the circumcysyon.

⁹ Lye not one to another, that the olde man wyth hys workes be put of,

²⁹ wold God thys people were vnder my hande, then I wolde take Abimelech oute of the waye. And one sayd vnto Abimelech: make thyne hosts greater and go oute.

⁴ And the pryest answered Dauid and sayd: there is no comen bread vnder myne hande, but there is halowed bread, yf the young men, had abstayned only from wemen.

⁶ Ye one shal take a frend of his owne kynred by the bosome and saye: thou haste clothynge, thou shalt be oure heade, for thou mayest kepe vs from thys fall and parell.

¹⁵ And he sayde vnto the people: be redye against the thyrde daye, & se that ye come not at youre wyues.

³⁰ And thou shalte sette vppon the table, shewbreade before me allwaye.

⁵ And thou shalt take fyne floure and bake .xij. wastels thereof, two tenthdeales shall euery wastell be. ⁶ And make two rowes of them, sixe on a rowe vpon the pure table before the Lorde, ⁷ and putte pure frankencens vpon the rowes. And it shalbe bread of remembraunce, & an offeryng vnto the Lord. ⁸ Euery Saboth he shall put theym in rowes before the Lorde euermore, geuen of the children of Israel, that it be an euerlastyng couenaunt. ⁹ And they shalbe Aaron and hys sonnes, and they shal eate them in the holy place. For they are most holy vnto hym of the offerynges of the Lord, and shalbe a duty for euer.

⁶ And so the pryest gaue hym halowed bread, for there was no nother bread there saue shew breades that were taken from before the Lord, to put freshe bread there the day that it was taken away.

³ & that they should say vnto the priestes, which were in the house of the Lord of hostes, & to the prophetes: should I wepe in the fyfte moneth, and absteyne, as I haue done now cerrtain yeares?

³ He sayde vnto them: Haue ye not read what Dauid dyd, when he was an hungred, and they also whiche were with hym? ⁴ How he entred into the house of God, & eate the halowed louwes, which were not lawful, for him to eate, neyther for them which were with him but onlye for the priestes.

⁵ Withdrawe not your selues one from another, excepte it be wyth consente for a tyme, for to geue your selues to fastinge, and prayer. And afterward come agayne to the same thinge, leste Sathan tempte you for your incontinencye.

²⁶ And out of the basket of swete breade that was before the Lord, he toke one swete cake of oyled breade and one wafer, put them on the fatt and vpon the ryght shoulder:

⁹ And they shalbe Aaron and hys sonnes, and they shal eate them in the holy place. For they are most holy vnto hym of the offerynges of the Lord, and shalbe a duty for euer.

¹⁵ The Lorde said vnto him: go thy wayes for he is a chosen vessel vnto me, to beare me name before the gentyls and kynges, and the chyldren of Israel.

³ For this is the will of God, euen that ye shoulde be holy, and that ye shoulde abstayne from fornicacion, ⁴ that euerye one of you should know, howe to kepe his vessell in holynes and honoure,

²⁰ Notwtstandyng in a greate house are not onelye vessels of golde and of syluer: but also of woode and of earthe, some for honoure, and some vnto dyshonoure. ²¹ But yf a man purge hym self from suche felowes, he shalbe a vessell sanctyfyed vnto honoure, mete for the Lorde, & prepared vnto all good workes.

¹⁷ It is better (yf the wyll of God be so) that ye suffre for wel doyng, then for euil doinge.

²⁵ And he sayde to them: haue ye neuer rede what Dauid dyd, when he had nede, & was an hungred both he and they that were with hym? ²⁶ Howe he went into the house of God in the dayes of Abiathar the hye prieste, and dyd eate the halowed loues, which is not lawfull to eate, but for the priestes onely: and gaue also to them, whiche were with hym? ²⁷ And he sayde to them: the Saboth daye was made for man, & not man for the Saboth daye.

³ And Iesus aunswered them and sayde: Haue ye not read what Dauid did when he him selfe was an hongred, and they which were with hym: ⁴ how he wente into the house of God and toke and eate the loues of halowed breade, & gaue also to them which were with him, which was not lawfull to eate, but for the priestes onlye.

⁷ And there fell a stryfe betwene the herdmen of Abrams cattell, and the herdmen of Lots cattell. Moreouer the Cananites & the Pheresytes dwelled at that tyme in the land. ⁸ Then sayd Abram vnto Lot: Let there be no strife (I pray the) betwene the and me, and betwene my herdmen and thine, for we be brethren.

²⁰ And the herdmen of Gerar did stryue with Isaacs herdmen, saying: the water is ours. Then called he the well Eseck, bicause they stroue with him.

⁵ And behold Saul came followyng his oxen oute of the felde, & asked what ayled the people to wepe. And they told hym the tydynges of the men of Iabes.

⁴⁷ And so Saule toke the kyngedom ouer Israel, and fought agaynste all hys enemyes on euerye syde: agaynste the Moabytes: agaynst the chyldren of Ammon: agaynst the Edomites: agaynste the Kynges of Zobah and agaynst the Philystynes. And whethersoeuer he turned hym selfe, there he wanne,

⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which had the ouer sight of the seruauntes of Saul and sayde: I sawe the sonne of Isai, when he came to Nob, to Ahimelech the sonne of Ahitob,

²⁹ And ouer the oxen that fed in Saron was Setari the Saronite. And ouer the oxen in the valeys was Saphat the sonne of Adlai.

¹⁰ And he built toures in the wildernesse & digged many welles. For he had much catel, both in the valey and also in the playne: and plowmen and vinedressers in the mountaynes and in Charmel, for he loued husbandrye.

¹ To the chaunter, an exortacyon of Dauid when Doeg the Edomite came to Saul, and shewed hym, sayinge: Dauid is come to the house of Ahimelech. Why boastest thou thy self, thou Tyrraunt, that thou canste do myschiefe? Wher as the goodnesse of God endureth yet dayly. ² Thy tonge ymagyneth wyckednesse, and with lyes it cutteth like a sharpe rasoure. ³ Thou loueste vngratiousnesse more then good, to talke of lyes more then ryghtuousnesse. Selah. ⁴ Thou louest to speake al wordes that may do hurte. O thou false tonge. ⁵ Therfore shall God cleane destroye the, smyte the in peces, pluke the out of thy dwellynge, and rote the out of the lande of the lyuynge. Selah. ⁶ The rightuous shal se this, and feare, and laugh him to scorne, ⁷ Lo, this is the man, that toke not God for his strength but trusted vnto the multitud of his riches, & was myghty in his wickednes. ⁸ As for me, I am lyke a grene olyue tree in the house of God: my truste is in the tender mercy of God for euer and euer. ⁹ I wyll alwaye geue thankes vnto the, for that thou hast done: & wil hope in thy name, for thy sayntes lyke it wel.

⁹ For when ye haue stolen, murthered, committed aduoutrye, and periury: When ye haue offred vnto Baal, folowyng straunge & vnknowne Goddes. ¹⁰ Then come ye, and stande before me in thys house, whiche hath my name geuen vnto it and say: Tush, we are absolued quite, though we haue done all these abhominacions. ¹¹ What? thincke you thys house that beareth my name, is a denne of theues? And these thinges are not done priuelye, but before myne eyes sayeth the Lorde.

³¹ These come vnto the, after the maner of a great people: yea my people syt doune before the, and heare thy wordes, but they do not there after: for in theyr mouthes they shewe them selues, as though they were feruent, but their herte goeth after theyr owne couetous lucre.

⁵ When wil the new moneth be gone, that we maye sell vytale, & the Sabboth, that we maye haue scarcenesse of corne: to make the busshell lesse, and the Sycle greater?

⁸ Thys people draweth nye vnto me with their mouthes, & honoureth me with their lippes, howe be it their hertes are farre from me:

²⁶ Then the next daye Paule toke the men, and puryfyed hym selfe with them, and entred into the temple, declarynge that he obserued the dayes of the purifycation, vntyll that an offerynge shoulde be offered for euerye one of them. ²⁷ And as the seuen dayes shoulde haue ben ended, the Iewes which were of Asia when they sawe hym in the temple, they moued all the people, and layed handes on hym,

⁶ And they shall make the Ephod of golde, iacincte, scarlet, purpull and whyte twined bysse with brothered worke. ⁷ The two sides shall come together, closed vp in the edges therof. ⁸ And the gyrdell of the Ephod shalbe of the same worckemanshyppe and of the same stuffe, euen of golde, iacyncte, scarlette, purpull and twyned bysse. ⁹ And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and graue in them the names of the chyldren of Israell: ¹⁰ sixe in the one stone, the other sixe in the other stone: accordynge to the order of their birth. ¹¹ After the worcke of a stonegrauer euen as signettes are grauen, shalt thou graue the .ij. stones with the names of the chyldren of Israel, and shalt make them to be set in ouches of golde. ¹² And thou shalte put the two stones vpon the two shoulders of the Ephod and they shalbe stones of remembraunce vnto the chyldren of Israel. And Aaron shal beare their names before the Lorde vpon his two shulders for a remembrance. ¹³ And thou shalt make hokes of gold ¹⁴ and two cheynes of fine golde: lynkeworke and wrethed, and fasten the wrethed cheyns to the hokes.

² And Saul and the men of Israel came and pytched in Ockedale, and put them selues in araye, to fyght agaynst the Phylystines.

⁵⁰ And so Dauid ouercame the Philistine wyth a slyng and a stone, & smote the Philistine and slue him. And because Dauid had no swerde in his hand, ⁵¹ he ranne and stode vpon the Philistine, and toke his swerd and drue it oute of his shethe, and slue hym & cut of his head therwyth. And when the Philistines sawe that theyr champyon was dead, they fleed. ⁵² And the men of Israel and of Iuda arose and showted and folowed after the Philistines, vntyl they came to the valey and vnto the gates of Akaron. And the Philistines fell doune dead by the waye, euen vnto Geth and Akaron. ⁵³ And then the children of Israel returned from chasyng after the Phylistines and robbed theyr tentes. ⁵⁴ And Dauid toke the head of the Philistine and brought it to Ierusalem: But he put his armoure in hys tente.

¹⁰ And they hanged vp hys harnesse in the house of Astaroth, but they hanged vp hys carkase on the walles of Bethsan.

¹ Then thought Dauid in his hert: I maye peryshe one daye or other by the handes of Israell. There is no better for me, then to flee into the lande of the Philistines, that Saul of very dispaire to finde me, may cease to seke me any more in all the coastes of Israhel: for so I maye escape his hande. ² And Dauid arose, & he and the syxe hundred men that were with him went vnto Achis, the sonne of Maoch, kynge of Geth.

³ when he sawe that, he arose and went for his lyfe, and came to Bersabe in Iuda, and left hys lad there.

¹ Of Dauid, when he fayned hym self too be madde before Abimelech: whyche droue hym awaye, and he departed. I wyll alwaye geue thanckes vnto the LORD, hys prayse shall euer be in my mouth. ² My soule shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall heare therof, & be glad. ³ O prayse the Lord wyth me, and let vs magnyfye hys name together. ⁴ I sought the Lorde, and he herde me, yea he delyuered me out of all my feare. ⁵ They that haue an eye vnto hym, shalbe lightened, & ther faces shal not be ashamed. ⁶ This poore man cryed vnto the Lorde, & he hearde hym, yea, and delyuered hym oute of all hys troubles. ⁷ The Aungel of the Lorde pytcheth hys tente rounde aboute hym that feare hym, & delyuereth them. ⁸ O taste and se how frendly the Lorde is, blessed is the man that trusteth in hym. ⁹ O feare the Lord, ye that be hys sayntes: for they that feare hym, lacke nothyng. ¹⁰ The ryche shall wante and suffre hunger, but they which seke the Lord, shal want no maner of thyng, that is good. ¹¹ Come hyther, O ye chyldren, herken vnto me, I wil teache you the feare of the Lorde. ¹² Who so lysteth to lyue, and wolde fayne se good dayes. ¹³ Let hym refrayne his tonge from euell, & hys lyppes that they speake no gyle. ¹⁴ Let hym eschue euell, and do good: Lette hym seke peace and ensue it. ¹⁵ For the eyes of the Lorde are ouer the righteous, and his eares are open vnto theyr prayers. ¹⁶ But the face of the Lorde beholdeth them that do euell, to destroye the remembraunce of them out of the earth. ¹⁷ When the righteous crye, the Lorde heareth them, & delyuereth them out of all theyr troubles. ¹⁸ The Lorde is nye vnto them that are contryte in hert, and will helpe suche as be of an humble sprete. ¹⁹ Great are the troubles of the righteous, but the Lorde delyuereth them out of all. ²⁰ He kepeth all their bones, so that not one of them is broken. ²¹ But misfortune shall slaye the vngodly, & they that hate the righteous shalbe gylty. ²² The Lorde deliuereth the soules of hys seruauntes, and all they that put their truste in hym, shall not offende.

²¹ Nowe when Iehoakim the kyng wyth al the estate and prynces had hearde his wordes, the kynge went about to slaye hym. When Vriah perceyued that, he was afrayed, & fled, and departed into Egypte.

¹ And then the Lorde sayde vnto Samuel: How longe wilt thou mourne for Saul, seing I haue cast him away from raygning ouer Israel? fyll an horne with oyntment, and come: I wil sende the to Isay the Bethlehemite, for I haue spyed me a king amonge his sonnes.

⁷ And the wemen that played sange therto, & sayd: Saul hath slayne his thousand & Dauid hys ten thousand. ⁸ Then was Saul exceding wroth & the sayinge displeased him, and he sayde: they haue ascrybed vnto Dauid ten thousand, and to me but a thousande, & what can he more haue saue the kyngdome?

⁵ Is this not Dauid to whom they sange in daunses: Saul slue his thousand, but Dauid his ten thousande?

Be mercifull vnto me (O God) for men will treade me doune: they are dayly fightynge and troublynge me. ² Myne enemyes treade me dayly vnder their fete, for they be many that proudly fighte agaynste me. ³ Neuerthelesse, when I am afrayed, I put my trust in the. ⁴ I will comforte my selfe in Gods worde, yea, I will hope in God, & not feare: What can flesh then do vnto me? ⁵ They vexe my dayly in my wordes: all that they ymagyne, is to do me euell. ⁶ They holde alltogether, & kepe them selues close they marcke my steppes, how they may catch my soule. ⁷ But in vayne, for it shall escape them: and why? thou (O God) in thy dyspleasure shalt cast doune suche people. ⁸ Thou tellest my flytynges, thou puttest my teares in thy bottel, and numbrest them. ⁹ When soeuer I call vpon the, myne enemyes are put to flight: whereby I knowe that thou art my God. ¹⁰ In Goddes worde wyll I reioyse, in the Lordes worde wyll I comforte me. ¹¹ Yea, in God do I trust, and am not afraied what can man than do vnto me? ¹² Vnto the (O god) wil I paye my vowes, vnto the wyll I geue thankes and prayse. ¹³ For thou haste delyuered my soule from death, and my fete frome fallynge, that I may walke before God in the lyght of the lyuyng.

¹¹ And when he was come nye for to enter into Egypte, he sayed vnto Sarai hys wyfe. Behold, I knowe that thou art a fayre woman to loke vpon. ¹² It wyll come to passe therfore when the Egyptyans se the, that they wyll saye: she is hys wyfe. And so shall they sley me and saue the. ¹³ Saye I pray the therfore that thou arte my sister that I maye fare the better by reason of the, and that my soule may lyue for thy sake.

⁷ And the men of the place asked him of his wife, & he said that she was hys sister: for he feared to call hyr his wyfe, lest the men of the place shold haue killed him for hir sake, bicause she was beutiful to the eye.

⁴ I sought the Lorde, and he herde me, yea he delyuered me out of all my feare.

³ Neuerthelesse, when I am afrayed, I put my trust in the.

¹¹ Thy wordes haue I hyd wythin my hert that I should not synne against the.

¹⁹ But Mary kept all those sayinges, and pondered them in her herte.

⁵¹ And he went with them, and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them: But his mother kepte al these sayinges in her herte.

²⁵ He that feareth men, shall haue a fall: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lorde shall come to honoure.

⁷ Who so doeth wronge, maketh a wyse man to goo out of hys wytte, and destroyeth agentle herte.
